temple tragedy. clearer picture of the man accused of a rampage in a church. >> the troubling details to his past. >> police are releasing more information about an army veteran accused of killing six people at the temple in wisconsin. the suspected shooter was killed. but susan mcginniss reports for wjz, the community remainoss edge. >> reporter: they are collecting evidence, after an army veteran allegedly went on a shooting rampage. >> our investigators are following up on all leads that we have. and to give you a motive at this time would be premature. >> reporter: police identified the shooter as 40-year-old wade michael page, and said that he was discharged from the army in 1998. investigators say he killed six people sunday at the temple in oak creek and wounded three

others, including an officer, before police shot and killed him. amar dicolecca is the son of the president, his father died trying to stop the attacker. >> my father saved a tremendous amount more hardship because people were able to get to cover. >> reporter: the fbi is confident page acted, -- alone but said police are looking for this man. who showed up at the scene after the shooting. >> reporter: federal authorities are investigating whether this was an act of domestic terrorism or a hate crime. >> we are looking at ties to white supremacist groups. >> reporter: many members of the sikh community say they have been mistaken for muslims since 9/11. >> we worship and pray for peace for everybody. if that place is not safe, where is a person going to go? >> reporter: they had no threat

against the oak creek temple before sunday's attack. susan mcginnis, wjz eyewitness news. >> two worshipers and the injured officer are being treated for a gunshot wound at a local hospital. coming up new at 5:00, a maryland connection to the shooting. a city police investigation under way now, after an officer opened fire on a suspect outside of a district courthouse in northwest baltimore. wjz is live on wabash avenue, where it all upon. -- all happened. derek valcourt explains as the suspect opens fire. >> the incident all unfolded here in the middle of this parking lot. police say that the suspect tried to hit an officer with his police car. police say that officer, fearing for his life, then opened fire. >> reporter: detectives swarmed to the district courthouse parking lot on wabash avenue, 11:00 monday morning. bullet casings sitting on the ground are now marked as evidence. when officers realized he had an outstanding traffic warrant, he was placed under arrest and

put in handcuffs. police say the suspect then asked to go to the bathroom. the handcuffs were taken off. and that's when they say he ran out of the building into the parking lot. and the officer gave chase. >> we're now being told that the suspect jumped into a vehicle, backed up and tried to run the officer over. at which time, the officer fired at least three rounds, striking the suspect in the right arm. >> reporter: despite the gunshot, the suspect still manages to drive away from the scene of the city police helicopter, followed the car all the way to the 2300 block of rosalyn drive, where the suspect was placed into custody. >> reporter: that suspect has been identified as 25-year-old tavon williams. he are -- we are told he has been taken to the hospital. he has been treated for his injuries. he has not yet been released. charges are pending. we're now live, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, derek. thank you. the officer involved in the shooting is a 38-year veteran of the force. he is on routine administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.

a day of racing in pennsylvania turns tragic when violent storms sweep through the area. >> 85,000 fans were at the pocono raceway, when the severe weather hit. the race was stoped and the crowd -- stopped and the crowd was told to head for coverage. but it wasn't fast enough. multiple lightning strikes. a man in the parking lot was killed when lightning hit his car. bystanders tried to perform cpr. but he was pronounced dead later at the hospital. another 19 were injured during the storms. one remains hospitalized today. >> officials are now reviewing logs from the track to determine exactly when the safety warning was issued. a carbon monoxide leak at the post office sends two people to the hospital. emergency crews were called to the facility east fayette street earlier today. dozerns of -- dozens of people were checked for carbon monoxide exposure. a hot-button issue is on

the agenda when state lawmakers convene this week for another special session. the session will mostly focus on expanded gambling. but after a huge outcry from pit bull owners, the assembly will also consider a court ruling calling the breed inherently dangerous. many are concerned it would force them to give up their dogs or face eviction. a $2.5 billion gamble has paid off. the rover named curiosity has wheeled down on mars. scientists in maryland and across the country held their breath today, as the spacecraft made a first of its kind landing. >> reporter: problem, slow a one-ton spacecraft down from 13,000 miles per hour for a soft landing on mars. and do it in seven empties. >> -- minutes. >> new technology has never been attempted before we created this. >> scientists and engineers anxiously watched a live

control feed from california. as the rover, curiosity, was slowed by a supersonic parachute to 200 miles per hour. and continued on, inside a rocket-powered landing platform. slowing steadily and running off an on board program outside earth's control, curiosity was gently lowered to a soft landing by cables. a radio signal let controllers know it worked. >> touchdown confirmed. >> reporter: relief at goddard. within hours, the first black- and-white photograph, show curiosity's shadow. and inside the rove -- rover is the portable chemistry lab. >> nervous trepidation. and the fact that it went off flawlessly is incredible. it is so amazing. so cool. >> reporter: while landing on mars is a huge step, it is only the first step. >> reporter: once the rover goes to work, one of its missions is to look for signs of distinct life. they will analyze samples of

it is 90 degrees with sunshine in central maryland. right now, the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. cleanup is under way, after deadly flooding hits northern india. buildings are under water. and in some places, you cannot even see the road. this is one of 150 homes that

just collapsed. two brims were also stroyed. local reports say a number of people have died and even more are missing. evacuations are still under way. well, a terrifying scene in an ohio hospital. a man shoots his wife inside the icu. barbara waas is being treated for a terminal illness at akron general hospital. witnesses say her husband just walked into the icu and shot her. john waas is now behind bars. his wife did survive the shooting. no word on a motive. in today's healthwatch, protecting against mosquitoes. the number of people who have contracted west nile virus so far is the highest since 2004. and it's still early. randall pinkston reports for wjz. several people have died. >> reporter: the sabino family spends a lot of time outdoors. >> we're out at either baseball games or pool parties or hiking.

>> reporter: and with the mosquitoes biting, the centers for disease control is warning everyone to take precautions against west nile virus. about 240 people have contracted the virus. that's the highest number at this time of year since 2004. most cases are in texas, mississippi, and oklahoma. >> we're early in the season. august and september are usually the peak transmission periods. so having this much activity this early and this widespread, is cause for concern. >> reporter: the most common symptoms include fever, headache, and body aches. but the virus can also trigger potentially deadly symptoms, such as inflammation of the brain. people over 50 and those with cancer or diabetes are at greatest risk for serious illness. >> to keep the bugs away, experts say look for products that contain deet because they are the most effective. but be cautious using them on children. >> you want to minimize your child's exposure to the insect

[ singing ] >> there's still a jolt of excitement, running through the olympic park. after the world's fastest man bolted to victory. >> reporter: he shot to gold in the men's 100 meter. then thrilled fans with his trademark, lightning bolt pose. >> brilliant. he's the fastest man in the world. >> reporter: british police arrested a man for hurling insults then a bottle at bolt just before the race. bolt said he didn't see anything before the finish line, as he ran the fastest time in olympic history.

all right. eye live look outside. it looks a little hazy out there. >> does. >> starting to see sunshine return. a few peaks here and there during the day. but that front is trying to move off to the south. first warning doppler radar. that's where it's going to be for the next day or two. couple of spotty showers on the beaches. not the prettiest of beach days. and that's slowly going to push it away. front did start push off to the south overnight. but it took sometime to do that.

then northern fringe, dryer air coming in. mix of sunshine and clouds out there right now. and across the south, front going to still be across the shower and storm. tomorrow, but across the north, going to be on the dryer side. even though there's not much of a wayne wind, it will be to the north. 10 to 15 degrees higher this morning. that's the tryer air trying to come in. still 90 degrees in baltimore, though. 87 in hagerstown. warm afternoon, topping out at 91. that average is dropping, down to 86. can you believe it? we're already starting to drop our averages this time of year. crazy. so this is the front. it's a slow mover. got very strung out yesterday. when that happens, it's going to slow down. so it doesn't have that forward push that it used to. this is where it's going to be tomorrow. northern part of the state. mix of clouds and sunshine. there is a chance across southern maryland and the beaches for a pop-up shower or thunderstorm. the authority other thing -- the other thing you note.

there is another front coming. the way that's going to work out for us. this coming our way. a little break. but here comes that break in the northwest wednesday. it will start to draw moisture back up ahead of it. so the chance for a shower or thunderstorm wednesday afternoon. for all of the -- all of us spreading out over the state. the chance increases. as the front comes in. it could bring a decent amount of rain friday and maybe even into saturday. now, in the tropics, this saturday latest winds. moving off to the west/northwest. along the track, there is a chance that it could become a hurricane before making landfall in beliz and the southern parts of yucatan. on the track, it continues to move off to the northwest. even in the minimal hurricane. we will continue to bring you the latest. winds around the southeast for us. not that going on around here. and tomorrow, pretty decent day

store 6:29. 90 degrees. partly sunny in central maryland. hello, everyone. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. in oklahoma, a wildfire nicknamed the monster burns. even though evacuation orders have been lifted, many residents are still on edge. manuel reports for wjz. >> randy west and her family were allowed to return home late sunday to sift through the ashes for her father's military medals. compounding their loss, the oklahoma county sheriff's department is investigating this fire as a possible arson. a man in a black truck reportedly threw a flaming newspaper and sped away, causing a fast-moving fire. >> we had 30 minute toss get the stuff done, get what we could. >> reporter: her father, a decorated army sharp shooter live here until his death 20 months ago. so far, they've only found one. >> it represents the world.

it does. >> reporter: but in other parts of oklahoma, more than 30 fires remain active, and there were 15 new ones started sunday. the state's department of forestry reports that at least 80,000 acres have burned, and more than 120 homes have been lost. conservative numbers that are expected to rise later today. >> does that concern you that we're so early on this season and it's already this fast? >> absolutely. yeah. this is going to put most everybody on edge throughout the state. >> reporter: the state is baking under a severe drought. and temperatures remain around 100 degrees. the good news, if there is any, there have been no deaths reported. and for that, randy west is among those who are grateful. >> i think what helped me get through it is knowing that we're all safe. >> judges are continuing the a son investigation. following up on leads. the forecast in oklahoma doesn't call for rain until next week. the man charged with shooting congresswoman gabrielle giffords has reportedly reached a plea deal.

>> jared loughner is expected to enter a guilty plea at a hearing tomorrow. experts believe laugh more is -- loughner is now competent to understand the charges against him. he is accused of opening fire. a judge ruled him not fit to stand trial. but today's hearing could change all of that. if the judge finds he is mentally competent, he would receive a life sentence in prison. >> reporter: loughner has spent the last year in a federal medical facility in missouri, being treated for schizophrenia. another setback for syrian president bashar assad, as he fights to keep control of the country's largest city. [ gunshots ] >> new video shows the aftermath of a deadly attack in alepo. this comes after syria's prime minister has reportedly defected to join the revolution. meanwhile, tens of thousands of refugees are also seeking

shelter. workers at the main post office downtown are overcome by carbon monoxide fumes. rochelle ritchie has the investigation into this dangerous incident. >> reporter: scary moments here at the post office this morning. now, 50 to 60 people are being treated for possible carbon monoxide poisoning. >> reporter: it all started with a sudden fall. >> i received a fall at approximately 8:30 this morning for an injured person. >> reporter: chief kevin cartwright with the baltimore fire department said the man had high levels of carbon monoxide in his system. >> they were able to evaluate carbon monoxide of 38 parts per million. which certainly can be serious. >> reporter: he's now being treated at the university of maryland shock trauma. >> reporter: and it is believed it will come from a generator near one of the doors in the building. >> reporter: while levels are carbon monoxide are not high,

any exposure for a long period of time can be dangerous. >> it's not significant. however, if a person has been exposed to 38 parts per million of carbon monoxide for hours, can certainly be deadly. >> reporter: and it's back to business as usual here. we're told the carbon monoxide leak did not impact the customer service area. in downtown baltimore, rochelle ritchie, wjz eyewitness news. >> they were detected by the baltimore fire department's hazardous task force. prices are projected to increase a fifth and then flatline through august. consumers should expect prices to go down until after labor day, when summer driving season comes to an end. and a look at what it is costing you to fill up right now. the current price for a gallon of regular is up 13 cents from last week. and nearly a quarter from last month. this time last year, you were paying $3.68 a gallon. still down compared to last year's prices. u.s. health officials are looking into a possible

outbreak of swine flu, among sick pigs at county fairs. mary is in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: dozens of people have been treated with a mystery illness, after visiting the pig farms at county fairs nationwide. at least 29 known cases of the flu. 16 in the past week. health officials say the virus does not seem to be spread easily among people. but that it does contain a gene from the h1n1 that sickened millions worldwide in 2001 and 2010. health officials say simple hygiene like washing your hand and refer coming in contact with animals could help prevent the flu from spreading. >> the bulk of the other cases were among children. outside right now. it's still pretty warm. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> very humid weekend. temperatures 90 to 95, many places. today, it's beginning to dry out.

and by tomorrow, you'll see a big demonstration. right now, there's no wind at all. still at 90. but take a look at radar. earlier today, some shower activity. way down to the south and southeast of us. a front that is really weak has moved through the area. but there is dryer air moving in just north of the mason- dixon line. our dew points dropping back into the upper 50s. we'll feel that tonight. a lot more comfortable day tomorrow. looks like a very pleasant day coming up tomorrow. it will be sunny for the most part. maybe a few clouds and warm. but less humid will make you feel a lot more comfortable. vic? >> okay, bob. thank you. let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, vic. hi, everyone. things on 95 definitely starting to slow down in that northbound direction. as you make your approach to the fort mchenry tunnel. as far as the beltway, slow on the approach to the charles street inner loop. and also slow as you approach liberty road. after that, traffic does break free. and you're back to the posted speed. as far as harford county goes, the two accidents in that area.

two typhoons hit china. storms caused severe flooding in some areas, leaving residents stranded. they battled through strong winds and heavy rains to find them. rescue migs are still going on in other regions. shocking proposition as residents at a florida motel worry for their children's safety. rochelle ritchie has more on the story from the newsroom. it happened in orange park, about 30 miles south of jacksonville. surveillance video caught a man going door to door at a motel.

a couple staying in one of the rooms asked if he could trade his baby for some food. when he said no, he ran off. officers say they don't know who the man or child are. and they are not sure if the child was his or if the child was kidnapped. so far, there have been no reports of missing children in the jacksonville area. >> police are looking for a taxi driver who may have given the pair a ride. in china, a 4-year-old is left dangling from a balcony. the child was left home alone. she somehow got her head stuck between the railings. luckily, a man spot ed the girl and saved her within minutes. the philadelphia eagles football team is rallying around their head coach. andy reid's oldest son was found dead in the room at training camp. >> it is with great sadness that i tell you that garrett reid, the oldest son of coach reid was found dead this morning in his room here at

training camp this. is a tough morning for all of us in the family. >> reporter: hoi howie rose made the stunning announcement. andy reid's oldest son found dead at training camp. but before leaving camp, he said he wanted camp to continue as usual. which it did. but for the flayers, was it not easy. >> our thoughts and prayers go to the family. it is very difficult. but we'll find a way to get through it. >> he was there for me personally, when my dad passed last year. first one to call me. and i want to let him know that i love him and this team loves him. >> reporter: after two stinlts in prison ask rehab, it looked like garrett had turned his life around, helping the eagles' strength and conditioning staff and becoming close with many of the players. >> still managed to come out here and practice. but it's definitely been a tough day. garrett was -- is a part of our football family. our extended family. our immediate family.

firefighters in california worked tirelessly to battle a five-alarm fire. flames could be seen from miles away, as they toured the roof of the building. fire crews say there were some explosions inside and some were being stored in the building. could have been causing the fire to spread. a powerful line of thunderstorms marches across middleton sea. it did put on quite a show. as chris county reports, it made for video. >> this is where i basically do my work here. >> he doesn't just stare up at the sky. >> okay. these are gold bases. these actually come from arizona? >> reporter: he makes a living off of it. >> i'm a meteorite dealer. >> that's called the woodman pattern. >> i own a business on the internet, called meteorites, plus. >> reporter: imagine what this 52-year-old must have thought around 2:00 today. >> have to go in under barbed wire. >> when he heard a loud bang in the back of his backyard.

here's a live look outside right now. skies are pretty clear for the moment. bob? >> it's drying out. that's the big difference between the weekend. what is really humid. so humid that your windows are fogging up if you have air conditioning in your house. it was that kind of very moist atmosphere. and temperatures are very warm. it's still warm. but much, much dryer. dew point is down to 63 this weekend. it was as high as the mid-70s. humidity at 40%. right now, no wind at all. the barometer holding steady. 30.00 inches. right now, 87 in hagerstown. they have the dew point of only 59 degrees. very comfortable to the north and west of us. 75 in elkton. a bit of a breeze off the water. and 89 in washington. once again, the dew point will continue to come down. tomorrow, it will probably be in the upper 50s. sunny for the most part, a few clouds. but dryer. make it a very comfortable summer day tomorrow. 84, westminster. and 86 there in annapolis and kent island.

and rock hall as well. right now, very light winds in the region. but generally, looking at a north flow of dryer air that came in with this front that gave us the thunderstorms yesterday. some folks got decent rain. a few spots picked up over half an inch. officially at the airport, they had a trace of rain. north of the city, about a quarter to half inch. a few spots had three quarters. wheaton picked up almost an inch of rain, as did elkton yesterday in those thunderstorms. that front really kind of wimped out. but did bring us wind gusts. it's now kind of dying across portions of southern virginia. still have thunderstorms down there. very humid and hot down here. dryer air. and that's sort of the boundary line in through there. so we head into the dryer air tomorrow. as we said, a nice, nice day. by wednesday and thursday, that same warm, moist air is probably going to come back across the region. so we'll warm up again. and the humidity will come back again. and the risk of some afternoon shower or thundershowers. beginning maybe late wednesday night and a better chance on thursday, as this nox front
