collecting evidence after an army veteranellad -- veteranallily went on a shooting rampage. >> our investigators are following up on leads we have. and to give you a motive at this time would be premature. >> reporter: police identified the shooter as 40-year-old wade michael page and said he was discharged from the army in 1998. investigators say he killed six people sunday at the temple in oak creek, and wounded three others before police shot and killed him. amar dicolecca's father died while trying to stop the attacker. myself father, while engaging the shooter saved a tremendous amount more hardship because people were able to get to cover. >> reporter: federal authorities are investigating whether this was an act of domestic terrorism or a hate- based crime. >> we are looking at ties to white suprem cyst groups. -- suprem cyst groups. >> reporter: many say they are scared. >> everybody goes there to worship, to pray for peace for

everybody. if that is not safe, then where is a person going to go? >> reporter: fbi agents say they had no indication of any threats against the oak creek temple before sunday's attacks. in oak creek, wisconsin, susan mcginnis, wjz eyewitness news. >> complete coverage of the shooting spree continues live with mike hellgren. he has more on the gunman's ties to a business based here in maryland. >> it's a record label. that gunman performed hate music in our area. and the lyrics reportedly advocated for genocide for several minority groups. >> reporter: wjz has learned wade michael page, the accused shooter at the sikh temple in wisconsin, had several ties to maryland. according to the southern pov effort -- poverty law center, he was a member of two racist bans. end apathy and hate. and played at a racist festival in baltimore. they also say a white

supremacist website, maryland- based label 56, distributed some of has music. it's based in linthicum and anne arundel county and issued a statement saying "label 56 is very sorry to hear about the tragedy in wisconsin. all products and images related to end apathy have been removed from our site. we do not wish to profit from this tragedy financially. please do not take what he did as honorable and please do not think we are all like that. >> reporter: page revealed how he began his journey into white power music. he wanted to start over. so he sold everything, except for what he owned into a backpack. and he talked about the method behind his music. to figure out how to end people's apathetic ways, he said. it requires discipline, strict discipline in our society. >> if it turns onut that it may have been motivated in some way by the ethnicity of those who

were attending the temple, i think the american people immediately recoil against those kinds of attitudes. >> reporter: and page was on the radar of authorities. again, the fbi is still investigating the exact motive behind the shootings. reporting live, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> mike, thank you. the president ordered u.s. flags to be flown at half staff at federal buildings through friday. >> violence at a local courthouse, as city police officer shoots a suspect outside of district court in northwest baltimore. wjz is live on wabash avenue, where it all happened. derek valcourt explains, the officer opened fire as the suspect tried to make his getaway. derek? >> reporter: and city police are still investigating to determine whether that officer was justified to open fire when he says the suspect tried to hit him with a car right here in this parking lot. >> reporter: detectives swarmed to the district courthouse parking lot on wabash avenue, around 11:00 monday morning. bullet casings sit on the ground, marked as evidence.

police say 25-year-old tevon williams had come to the courthouse for a separate matter. and when officers realized he had an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court for a traffic violation, he was placed in handcuffs and under arrest. >> reporter: officers undid his handcuffs. and that's when the the chase began. the suspect ran out the door here into the parking lot. >> we are now being told the suspect jumped into a vehicle, backed up and ran the officer over. at which time, the officer fired three rounds. >> reporter: despite the gunshot wound, tevon williams still managed to drive away from the scene. the city police helicopter followed the car all the way to the 2300 block of rosalyn drive, where williams was arrested and taken to the hospital. the shooting came as a shock to many visiting the courthouse. >> glad nobody is terribly -- terribly injured or anything. i just think it speaks to just the state of affairs in the city. state of the union, you know? and training people to know how

to keep cool under pressure. the officers are here to protect. you know, not to hurt. >> we are told that tevon williams agency gunshot wound is not critical. charges are pending. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. the officer involved in the shooting is a 38-year veteran of the force. he is on routine administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation. a dangerous gas leak inside the post office downtown, sparks a major has nat matte scare and sends several people to the hospital. kai has more on what happened and how. >> emergency crews say the workers were suffering from carbon monoxide exposure. that began after 8:00 this morning when a man collapsed on fayette street. medics responded and noticed elevated levels of carbon monoxide. investigators believe the gas came from a nearby power

generator. the carbon monoxide levels weren't particularly high. but experts say any prolonged exposure can be fatal. >> reporter: affected workers were treated at shock trauma. adding a new casino will be the focus this session. but another could impact all dog owners. wjz is live. adam may has reaction to the pending legislation. adam? >> reporter: mary, this is the reaction to a controversial court decision on pit bulls and who is responsible if one of themselves attacks -- them attacks. >> reporter: the future of this pit bull puppy, recovering from a broken leg at the spca hangs in the balance. >> i hope ginger gets better and has happy homes. >> reporter: they reported a slow down in pit bull adoptions. back in may, they stated pit bulls were inherently dangerous. they ruled landlords were liable. and a case involving a young towson child, almost killed by a pit bull. >> i don't want to see anybody

lose their dog. but i almost lost my son that day. and that's something that needs to be recognized loud and clear. >> reporter: that ruling outraged pit bull lovers, like mckie johnson. >> some people, they really love their dogs. and for them to get rid of them, that's kind of, you know, disrespectful. >> reporter: but now lawmakers unveil a new liability law. >> what kind of legislation would your organization like to see? >> ideally, we want legislation that treats all dogs the same and fairly, regardless of breed. that's our hope. >> reporter: state delegate curt anderson says his bill will also put liability back on dog owners. >> we have to look at both scenarios. not just the victims and not just the real dangerous dog owners. or specific breed of owners. >> reporter: for ginger, this could make finding a home easier. >> if they're trained, they'll be no problem. >> reporter: now, there are some who support that breed- civic specific court ruling. they feel that if it's left in

place, simply there could be less pit bull attacks in maryland. reporting live, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, adam. thank you. the special session starts thursday. drivers beware. construction crews are preparing to shut down part of a major road on the heart of the inner harbor tonight. it's all part of the opgoing work with the upcoming baltimore grand prix. two eastbound lanes of pratt street will shut down tonight, starting around 10:00. fans will be leaving the orioles game around that time. and crews will gradually move towards a full road closure, as the traffic subsides. pratt will reopen around 5:30 tomorrow morning. the grand prix of baltimore is scheduled for labor day weekend. drivers with a lead foot have new reason to be wary in baltimore county. police say five new speed cameras are about to become operational. the cameras are set up in school zones and will snap a.of -- a picture of any driver going 12 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. well, the new speed cameras will go online this wednesday, on johnny cake road near

southwest academy. cromwell bridge road, near lock raven high. register avenue, near stonily elementary. wise avenue, near patapsco high. and reisterstown road, near owings mills elementary. a 2.5 billion dollar gamble is paying off for nasa. right now, the agency's new rover, named curious it, is on the ground, on the planet mars. as alex demetrick reports, scientists held their breath as the spacecraft made a first of its kind landing. >> reporter: the problem, slow a one-ton spacecraft down from 13,000 miles per hour, to a soft landing on mars. and do it in seven minutes. >> new technologies never invented or attempted before, were created for this incredible journey. >> reporter: and at 1:00 a.m. in greenbelt, scientists and engineers anxiously watched a live feed from the control center in california, as the rover curiosity, was first slowed by a super sonic

parachute, to 200 miles per hour. and continued on inside a rocket-powered landing platform. slowing steadily and running off an on board program. curiosity was gently lowered to a soft landing by cables. a radio landing let them know it worked. >> touchdown complete. >> reporter: within hours. the first black and white photograph showed curious it's it's shadow. and inside the rover is the portable chemistry lab, built at goddard. and now in one piece. >> nervous trepidation. and the fact that it was flawless is incredible. it's amazing. so cool. >> reporter: while landing on mars is a huge step, it is only the first step. >> reporter: once the rover goes to work, one of its prime missions is to look for signs of extinct life. the chemical lab will look at deep in the planet's path. >> whether or not there ever

pretty good. by the end of the week, more shower activity is possible in the region. bernadette is in the outback with a look at the tropics just updated. >> >> reporter: we have that latest on ernesto. we're not going to be giving you an update. because the last update has been issued. for ernesto, this is what we have going on. moving off to the west/northwest. winds are 65 miles per hour or close to it. along this track, it is expected to possibly become a small category 1 hurricane, making landfall. the thing is, if it's a strengthening storm when it makes landfall, that is never good news. now, along all of these tracks, all of the fast tracks, you -- forecast tracks, you can see it making its way toward southern beliz. then making another landfall on the main land there of mexico. we still have a lot to get through with ernesto. we will keep you updated. >> okay, bernadette. thank you. orioles' magic continues as the team continues for a home

the world of wrestling. >> i started out playing football. >> reporter: for four years, vallard wrestled for north county high school. >> i won state this year. >> reporter: he hopes to participate with one of the greatest arthlet's negligence the world -- athletes in the world in the olympics. >> in four years i'm going to try. i'll be out of college. it will be perfect timing for me. i'll definitely try for the olympic team. >> reporter: he recently traveled 24 hours to houston, texas to participate in the junior olympics, where he wrestled his way to a bronze medal. >> i lost my last match by a point. so i didn't know if i would make the top three or not. when my name was placed on the paper, i was happy. >> reporter: unnrntsly -- unfortunately, everything was stolen. >> we went to the car at 7:00 in the morning. i went to the back and said, did you take the suit cases out? and she said no. and i was like, well, stuff is missing. >> reporter: the family said they locked the doors of their

gold escalade. and the next morning, the lock was popped, all of their belongings gone, including brandon's medal. >> the bronze is something i earned myself. it's upsetting. >> reporter: the thieves may have stolen his bronze. but brandon hopes one day to replace it with a gold. >> even better. >> and brandon did go home with at least one medal, a silver won by the team. mary, back to you. >> he has gotten his hand tonight. thank you. the family is trying to see if brandon can get another brond bronze medal. hollywood casino in perryville plans to return 400 to 500 plot slot machines to state. they say the state's business has been down. lawmakers are holding a special section this week -- session this week to debate gambling.

a 30-year-old plan to link two parts of baltimore county is one mile closer to reality today. mike schuh reports on the opening of a new highway. one what that is not wounded by the immediate neighbors. >> three, two, one. [ applause ] >> reporter: a joyous moment for the county executive. this new road has sts root -- its roots in the 80s. >> we think it was the right decision for traffic management and economic development purposes. and i'm proud of the community who is basically understanding why we have to do this. >> reporter: 14 years ago, the lions wood neighborhood was built. the new road cuts the community in half. though their sales paperwork informed them a road could be built, off camera, residents tell eyewitness news that the developer never spoke about its construction, each though -- even though it was on the drawing boards. the county executive acknowledged their sacrifice. >> this will help connect the

all right. we've got a pretty nice night on tap for the region. nobody is sitting there right now. but there will be a game tonight at camden yards if i'm not mistaken. and it's going to be a pleasant night. 87 now. 80 in ocean city. lower humidity.

making it a pretty comfortable night. locally, temperatures in the low to mid-80s as you can see. tell be probably back in the upper 70s to low 80s during the day tonight. light northwest winds. won't be a major factor tomorrow. front that came through the area, with the thunderstorms. now way down across southern virginia. ands -- and it's slowly moving away. taking showers and clouds with it. and dryer air appeared moving in. looks like a very nice tuesday headed our way. as high pressure builds in. but by wednesday, that same high that is going to give us a nice day, begins to move offshore. and then the winds go back to the southwest. that will bring with it some increased humidity late wednesday, thursday, and friday. with this front approaching the area. we'll have a better chance of scattered thunderstorm activity by the end of the week. and temperatures, just pretty much near normal, which is about 86 by the way. southeast winds, about 5 to 10 knots. and bay temp, pretty much stuck there at 83, which is pretty

it's 87 degrees. nice and sunny in our area. good evening to be playing baseball. good evening. thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. a rampage at a sikh temple in wisconsin. we're now learning more about the suspected shooter and the people he gunned down. christina metzler updates the investigation for wjz. >> 41 years old, male. >> reporter: the six worshipers

killed in oak creek, wisconsin, have been identified. police say 40-year-old wade michael page is responsible for the rampage. the heavily tattooed veteran. >> the officers at that point made sure the suspect was not a threat anymore as far as securing him. and they started to set up a perimeter at that point. we didn't know how many individuals may be out there. there were multiple reports. we are confident this time that was the only shooter involved. >> reporter: first officer on the scene, lieutenant brian murphy, a 21-year veteran on the force, was ambushed as he tried to help one of the victims and was repeatedly shot@close range by the gunman. >> we are currently treating the victims. currently in critical condition. these senseless gunshots wounded an heroic officer of the law and two peaceful

persons. >> reporter: president obama commented on sunday's tragic event. >> yesterday, i had the chance to speak to both the governor and the mayor, as well as leaders of the sikh community in oak creek. all of us are heartbroken. >> reporter: and it leaves a community wondering. >> if it's a random act. was it directed to us because of the way we look? >> reporter: i'm christina mujler reporting. >> wjz has learned that performance with the white supremacist rock band that played at a music festival here in baltimore. a man is charged shooting his wife in the middle of a hospital. john wise entered his wife's hospital room in akron medical center and shot her. the couple had been married for 45 years. at the time of the shooting, wise's wife was being treated for a terminal illness. >> to do something like that is beyond belief. >> nothing that we saw in the

neighborhood at all. so... they seem to be just a normal couple. >> reporter: the woman has been declared brain dead. police are trying to find out if this was an attempted mercy killing. strong storms hit a nascar raceway in pennsylvania, killing a fan attending the event. the public address system alerted fans of the storm but as they were headed out of the gates, lightning struck again ask again. it hit behind the pocono race track's grand stands. one fan was killed. nine others injured. the man killed standing near his car when the lightning hit. bystanders performed cpr, butert -- efforts to revive the man failed. the centers for disease control wants everyone to stake steps to prevent west nile virus. randall pinkston reports for wjz from new york. >> reporter: the sabino family spends a lot of time outdoors.

>> we're out at either baseball games or pool parties or hiking. >> reporter: and with the mosquitoes biting, the centers for disease control is warning everyone to take precautions against west nile virus. about 240 people have contracted the virus. that's the highest number at this time of year since 2004. most cases are in texas, mississippi, and oklahoma. >> we're early in the season. august and september are usually the peak transmission periods. so having this much activity, this early, and this widespread, is cause for concern. >> reporter: the most common symptoms include fever, headache, and body aches. but the virus can also trigger potentially deadly symptoms, such as inflammation of the brain. people over 50 and those with cancer or diabetes are at greatest risk for serious illness. >> reporter: to keep the bugs away, experts say look for products that contain deet because they are the most effective. but be cautious using them on children. >> you want to minimize your child's exposure to the insect

repellent. so once you come inside, give them a bath, wipe off all the insect repellent. >> reporter: wearing long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk, also protects when mosquitoes are out in full force. this mom always keeps the bug spray close. >> i want to make sure that i protect my children any which way i can. >> reporter: she wants them to enjoy the summer and stay safe. randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> cdc officials say we're probably seeing more cases of west nile virus because much of the u.s. had a mild winter, very early spring. and then just the right amount of rainfall patterns to make a lot of mosquitoes. the university of maryland's football team is finally getting to try out the new state of the art terp field at bird college park. today, they said it's like nothing else in the nation. >> reporter: fans say the new university field alt college park is cool and it is, literally.

government and military leaders to leave the country. >> reporter: a bomb blast ripped through the headquarters of the government-run syrian television station. it's one of a series of bombings and battles taking place in the syrian capital of damascus at the country's commercial hub, alepo. government troops are preparing for a ground attack against the rebels in alepo. as the assad regime tries to crush the rebellion. monday saw the defection of eight syrian officials, including the syrian prime minister. it was the highest profile defection yet from the assad regime. the syrian government claims hajab was fired. the white house is looking at this as another sign that assad's days are numbered. >> what we are seeing as evidenced by these days reports are increasing instability within his leadership. >> reporter: senior leadership officials are calling on other members of the government to

defect. >> she will meet with officials to find out the status of syrian refugees who have fled over the border. >> reporter: the united nations estimates the violence has forced 1 1/2 million syrians to become homeless. 120,000 of them are in this tent city in southern turkey. lebanon, jordan, and turkey, all neighbors of turkey, have taken in thousands so far. and they expect more. at the state department, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> and officials in jordan say the former syrian prime minister was smuggled across the border with his family. a massive five-alarm blaze rips through a warehouse in northern california. this was the scene in northern california. witnesses say they heard several loud explosions, coming from the inside of the building, as crews battle the flames. no one was hurt. a suspected bank robbery -- robber in massachusetts gets busted by her own dad. the man apparently saw surveillance photos of his 37-

year-old daughter on tv. so -- he went down to the station to identify her. his actions are getting mixed feelings from neighbors. >> he did the right thing. you know, he had to. i would have done the same thing. you don't want to do it. but you have to. >> they want to be good citizens. but at the same time, it's your daughter, who does that? >> police say the woman walked away from one bank with more than $1500. three men are lucky to be alive, after braving the niagara river and making it to the falls. rescue crews say it's nothing they've seen before. the men got as close to the falls as they could get. crews had to be lowered with ropes to beat the currents and rescue the men before they could even dry off, they were arrested. oscar-winning actress, natalie portman is now a married woman. she tied the knot with benjamin millpia. the pair met on the set of "black swan" and got married in
