hi, everybody. >> here's what people are talking about. >> we are following some breaking news out of ann arundel county where an over turned tanker is causing big problems right now. captain jeff long is over the scene in sky chopper 13 with the latest for us. >> reporter: we're live over pasadena. the tanker tluker truck owe -- truck you see on the right side of the highway, that's the southbound lane at about 3 o'clock that afternoon. that trailer became disconnected from the tractor that was pulling it. it's still leaking, still on the side of the road. hazmat is on the scene. we have the maryland department of environment, ann arundel county police and fire department. they're all on the scene. as you can see on the right side of your screen, another tanker truck has been brought in. it looks like they're going to transfer the

fuel from one to the other. this is gasoline, as far as we understand right now. as far as traffic is concerned, if you're heading southbound on route 2, you're going to be diverted at ford. if you're -- at water ford. northbound the detour is at east west boulevard. this is at the intersection of route 10. route 10 is being forced onto mountain road heading east boun. -- eastbound reporting live, captain jeff long. >> christy will have more on the road closures in just a moment. today the suspect in the tucson, ads -- arizona shooting that injured congresswoman gabby givefords pleads guilty. they had to rule he was competent to stand trail. >> a judge ruled that jared lofner is mentally competent to stand trial. minutes later he mrooeded guilty in the -- pleaded guilty in the case. tv

cameras wither not allowed -- were not allowed in the court. he appeared very different than his booking photo, pail, thin. he sat still as the court appointed psychiatrist testified about his troubled teenage and college years when he heard voices in his head. lofner told a doctor he was remorseful for what he did. he told his doctor, quote, i especially cry about the child, apparently refer together the 9-year-old -- referring to the 9-year-old victim killed in the attack. >> jared lofner's attorneys hope the plea agreement will get him life if prison instead of the death penalties. >> survivors of the shooting came to court. congresswoman gabby giffords were not among them. they said avoiding a trial would help them and the rest of the community continue to recover from the attack.

>> seasons -- since last year lofner has been in a psychiatric hospital. a university of maryland student appears in court to face acquisitions he planned to shoot up the campus. >> reporter: 19-year-old al exander song was an honor student. he was air arrested -- arrested if march after making threats on the internet. today he pleaded guilty to some of the time against him. the jum imopposed a 9 p.m. sur -- the judge imopposed a 9 p.m. curfew on him. . >> he was barred from campus after his arrest. the stepmother of an army veteran accused of killing six people at a wisconsin temple is speaking out about her son. today the community is paying

respects to the victims. susanne mcginnis has the latest from oak creek. >> dmrags -- flags around the sikh temple are flying at half staff. the law center says the department 40-year-old wade michael page was a member of white su premises groups and played with skin head bands including this one called definite hate. the army veteran's stepmother hasn't seen her son since 1999. she said she doesn't remember him the way he's being described. >> he was gentle and kind and loving and he was a happy person and a happy child. what happened, god only knows because i don't. >> the oak creek temple is still blocked off as federal investigators gather evidence but police caution they may never determine a motive. police say page used a handgun to shot and kill six people and critically wound three others,

including police lieutenant bryan murphy. >> people are remembering the victims at makeshift memorials. a man from illinois drove to oak creek to put together this one just like he did in aurora, colorado. >> people are laying teddy bears and other moe men toes in front of the reefs. >> i just really want to show my respect for those killed. >> she's from oak creek and her boyfriend is six. >> you hear about things on the news and don't think it's going to happen and then you hear about it. it's shocking. >> a funeral for all the victims is planned for friday morning. >> the oak creek community is expected to hold a vigil tonight as part of a national night out. an ann arundel woman is facing charges after she's accused of abandoning her baby outside a church. the 2 month old boy was found in a car seat placed outside the church. his mom was later found with her two

older daughters in central virginia. the baby is being treated for minor injuries while the mother faces negligents charges. the push to legally internet gambling appears to be over. lawmakers were expected to take up the issues during this week's special session. according to the baltimore sun online gambling has been taking off the agenda. a pretty nice day outside today. looking live out right now. it's been a mix of sun and clouds all day long. wjz has weather and traffic together. we begin with bernadette woods. >> hello. that front stalled out just to our south. because of that, a couple of showers around thunderstorms across the south today where it's been dry in baltimore this afternoon. there was some bigger thunderstorms earlier today just

around cambridge and easton. at this point we're seeing a thunderstorm drifting around chestertown and a few more showers and thunderstorms along the ocean right now. not the prettiest of beach days unfortunately. as far as something else going on in the water we've been updating you on ernesto. since we were last on although noon it's become a hurricane. this is hurricane ernesto. it's moving off to the west at 14 miles an hour. winds are up to 80 miles an hour. it's expected to make two strike that land fall -- separate land faums. -- falls. we will keep you updated on that. let's check on the roads with christy breslin. >> as í chapter íchap tin jeff show -- as captain jeff showed, there's an over tushed tanker from -- over turned tanker there. we have northbound and southbound highway closed in both directions. that's going to tie up traffic for some time.

four decades, marvin hamlish composed, conducted and arranged more than 40 film scores. one of his greatest successes was on stage, the long running musical a chorus line. he was born in 1944 in new york city into a musical family. his first job was a a rehearsal pianoist for funny girl. marvin's work earned him every major entertainment award, including three oscars, four semis, four grammy's and a tony. he had the satisfaction of knowing that long after the life came up audiences were still humming the tune he wrote. >> could listen to it all day long. when he passed away he was working on the score for a

mostly cloudy and 87 in central maryland. the complete forecast coming up. a terrifying 5 hours between an illinois's couples 2-year-old son disappeared. hundreds of volunteers came out to search for him. he was found a half mile from the baby siters home sitting in a corn field. his parents say he was dirty but okay other wise. another case of a child disappearing. this time a newborn is taken by a stranger at a hospital. luckily that stranger didn't get far. a woman is in custody after a kidnapping attempt in garden grove, california. >> disguised in hospital scrubs, police say this woman walked into the garden grove

hospital at 10:00 this morning with one intention, to kidnap a newborn baby. >> the mother turns her back, she takes the baby, puts it in the total and -- tote and tries to leave the room. >> she walked into the hospital, to the maternity ward. when a nurse asked her why she was there she left. she walked up to the 5th floor where recovery mothers and newborns stay. posing as a nurse, police say she told a mother to shower because a doctor on his way it shall was on his way -- was on his way. she didn't get far. >> it prevented the theft buzz was the fact -- was the fact the hospital put a bracelet on the an l of the infant and it sounded an alarm and locks the door and presents her from leaving. she was confronted by staff. >> now police suspect this is not her first kidnapping

attempt. last week in an i'm she walked into western medical center. >> she confronted a mother who had not given birth yet asking her some suspicious questions about when are you due, do you know the sex of the baby. that raised that mother's attention. she called the police. >> the baby was not harmed in this and is safely back with the mother. investigators found in history of mental illness. the good news continues on wall street. the stocks continue to post gains. the dow is up 51. the nasdaq up 26. let's go to new york for tonight's cbs money watch update. the stock market made three winning days in a row after some encouraging economic news. u.s. businesses posted the most job opening in 4 years in june.

sdmrtd -- welcome back. the clouds have been in place. farther south it's been wetter. that's because of the front to our south. because of that, a couple of showers around thunderstorms out there. around chestertown, these are drifting off to the north but a couple of little thunderstorms. further south from that we had some bigger ones earlier. still a few showers around sales berry all the way out to the beaches. it's not the prettyiest of beach days but we do have some changes coming your way. iffer the rest of us -- for the rest of us, the clouds have filled in because of the thunderstorms down there. 87, even with the clouds around in baltimore. 80s in the mountains. still 77 in ocean

city. there's not much of a wind going on either with that front stalled out. 87 has been our high so far today. the average is down to 86 degrees. we're very close to that. most of this forecast, at least for the next couple of days will be above average but we're coming back down again. the temperatures aren't the big part of this story as they have been. the big part of this story is going to be the chances for showers and thunderstorms. this is the front that's stalled to our south. notice this front out to the west. that's the way that's going to move our way over the next couple of days. tomorrow still the chance for a shower or thunderstorm as one front stays to our south and another one approaches. it will start to draw up that moisture. a couple of showers and storms are possible tomorrow, mainly in the afternoon. what happens after that as that front gets closer thursday into friday it's going to pass through. that's our best chance for some heavy thunderstorms around here and maybe some strong or severe thunderstorms. if watches our warnings come out we will be passing those along to you.

out in the water, this is ernesto, now a hurricane. still moving off to the west at 14 miles an hour. winds are now up to 80 miles an hour. this storm is expected to make two land falls on the northern fringe of beliz e or the southern part of mexico. it moving back over the water, makes another land fall in mexico once again. this is a story we'll be tracking for you. all the forecast models take it off to the west making two distinct land falls. on our waters much quiter. bay temperatures still now 83 degrees. as we head into tonight, a shower, thunderstorm is possible, mainly across the south. same idea for tomorrow, shower, thunderstorm possible. getting closer to 90 and we'll probably see a few more peaks of sunshine tomorrow. as that front comes our way thursday and friday we should see severe weather, heavy rains and thunderstorms. don't miss tonight's prime time cbs line up. at 10:00 it's person of interest then stay

bullets. a mother is charged in the death of her daughter in maryland. she lost control on a highway, flipping her jeep and ejecting her daughter from the backseat. she was charged with being under the influence of drugs. she faces a host of charges but witnesses say what she has to live with is the worst. >> i think one of the worst things punishments she's probably going to encounter is knowing for the rest of her life that she killed her own daughter. >> her three other children were in the car. no one else was hurt. two men, one from maryland, are charged with robbing people in pennsylvania while pretending to film a reality tv show. a victim says said he believed them until one man put him into a head lock. the maryland man posted bail, the other is still behind bars. new research is pushing parents to get their young girls vaccinated against the hpv

virus. even if they are not sexually active they are at risk. >> the did -- the study shows that more than 11% of young woman who never had sexual intercourse were infected with the virus. they need to be vaccinated by age 12. typically the virus is spread through intercourse but now it can be spread by gentile to gent till contact or hand to gentile contact. experts say more research is needed to apply the findings to the general population. >> thank you. hpv infections can cause cervical cancer. national studies show that those who text and drive are 23% more likely to get in a crash. school leaders from getting the message out loud and clear. >> the most dangerous thing these teens can do is get behind the wheel of a car. almost half of teen deaths are due to car

here's a live look outside right now. >> we have the clouds which have kept temperatures down a bit. the dew point has come down, particularly north of the baltimore area. the dew points today were in the mid 60s and making it very comfortable. south of us it was a lot more humidity and there have been some showers and thunderstorms. now we're at 87. the dew point not all that terrible at 67. we don't have a heat index with that. the humidity is at 51%. the thing is i think we're going to start seeing the humidity come back tonight into tomorrow. the dew points get up to about 70. tomorrow will be a warm and more humid day than today. north winds very light around 6. the barometer holding steady 29.97 inches. 75 oakland, 85 in hagerstown. i know some

thunderstorms in extreme southern portions of the western shore along the river there. 77 ocean city now. once again, 67 dew point, it should come up later tonight and tomorrow. sunshine, more sunshine but drier. 88 westminster, lots of clouds, 84 annapolis and kent island, rock all only 81. the average is 86 and the low has dropped ped one degree to 66. the record 1918. that's the all time high for august of 105. 2004 a nice cool 53. right now very light winds in the region. tomorrow looks more like a southeast wind coming in off the ocean. we had a froont that move -- a front that moved through a few days ago is that stalled out across virginia. it's going to slowly become diffused but that moisture will start moving back to the region.

of the day's breaking news, wjz13 starts now. hi everybody i'm mary bubala. >> and i'm kai jackson. this is what people are talking about. >> we continue to follow breaking news from anne arundel county. a tanker is spilling fuel into the highway. captain jess has the latest for us. >> reporter: that tanker truck was headed southbound around three o -- 3:00 this afternoon making a left hand turn on to southbound route 2. the tanker became separateed from the tractor that was pulling it and ended up on the side of the road here and was leaking. as you can see they are now transferring fuel from that one -- correction that's an $8,000 tanker truck into another tanker and then they'll get this out of the way. but it's goin
