guns under fire. as more victims in the newtown school shooting are laid to rest lawmakers move to ban assault weapons. >> why this could be the tipping point for the gun control debate. hello, everyone. >> here's what people are talking about tonight. >> one by one 20 newtown families are burying their children and in the wake of friday's shooting massacre leaders in washington and here in maryland are calling for a change in gun policy. >> reporter: mourners lined up outside the st. rose of lima church. they held two funerals today,

first graders james mattioli and jessica rekos. students at other schools went back to class today. the memorial to the victims grows with candles and christmas tree ornaments. many wonder how they will get flew the holidays. >> i can't imagine waking up christmas morning. i wouldn't want to. >> reporter: the gun control debate is picking up momentum. lawmakers will push for a ban on assault weapons and governor o'malley is doing the same. >> it's hard to conclude that this gun should be in the hands of anyone other than a military or police officers sent into a tactical situation. >> reporter: the gunman used a military style ar-15 and two

other weapons legally bought by his mother. the nra released a statement saying it was shocked, saddened, and heart broken by last week's shooting. the nra is going to provide meaningful contributions to end the violence. a student is caught planning an attack at a maryland high school. administrators say other students at laurel high school felt threatened by the teen on monday and reported him to their teachers. police believe this was a valid threat. they say the student had access to weapons and may have intended to hurt others. he is now at a psychiatric hospital for evaluation. surprising new developments tonight in a case that captured the attention of the nation. the disappearance and murder of felicia barns. we have the new information that could help the suspect in this case. >> reporter: felicia barns was 16 years old when she disappeared from a sister's apartment in northeast baltimore

two years ago. a nationwide search then ended when felicia's body was pulled out of the river. her sister's body friend is charged with the murder. he strangled barns in her apartment and transported her out of the apartment. a witness will dispute that at trial. this witness apparently claims that he saw barns alive in cecil county several days after she went missing. >> thank you. johnson is scheduled to go to trial next month. a health care on a local college campus, for the second time this year umbc is warning students about the infectious disease tuberculosis. here is the school's warning. >> reporter: there is a confirmed case on campus but university leaders haven't said when it's a student or a staff

member. campus on alert after a confirmed case of tuberculosis is reported at the university of maryland, baltimore county. >> it is scary. >> something that should worry us as student body, something contagious and it needs to be contained. >> reporter: the university sent a letter to students letting them know someone on campus has been diagnosed but did not say whether it was the student or staff member. back in february, the university issued a similar warning about a possible case. >> tuberculosis is prevalent and it's in the community. and it wouldn't surprise me that a case would show up. >> reporter: dr. mark leavy said the main symptoms is a bad cough. >> you could be coughing up blood, fever and chills which are not otherwise explained. >> reporter: it is an airborne disease that affects the lungs and it can be fatal if left untreated. people are being notified if they may have had contact with the infected person. >> it is communicable.

>> reporter: while most people make a full recovery students are glad the university put out a warning. >> it's a good thing to notify people, you know. >> reporter: and university leaders did not know how the reported case contracted the disease. >> umbc worked with the baltimore county of health to ice haet and treat the infect -- isolate and treat the infected person. thousands of people spent hours with no water when a water main was damaged. we were over simmons avenue soon after a contractor hit the water line. around 2600 homes and businesses have been experiencing temporary outages tonight. crews have isolated the break and water pressure will be low while they make repairs. a quick thinking neighbor saves a family from a burning home. but their home was destroyed with everything in it. others are chipping in to help this family at christmas. >> reporter: here is what sounds like when firefighters evacuate a burning home. this fire in dundalk was dangerous, big, and getting worse. >> there is a call for a may day. that was a mistake. the firefighter was in the year of the building. they found him. everything is okay. >> reporter: when it started two kids, 13 and 9, were home alone watching tv. luckily neighbor ed hurly was out walking his dog. >> two kids come running out and say there was a fire. they tried to get back in and get a cat but i told them no. >> reporter: ed may have saved their lives judging by how quickly smoke became fair. a neighbor believes the fire started in a clothes drier. the house is gutted. children's toys lay ruined. that's why denies webberwine is dropping off what she can

because nothing inside here is useable. >> so much has been happening, just felt the need to do it. >> reporter: unable to return, the family of six is now living with relatives around the corner, ed and his wife are collecting donations. >> you would do the same thing if you were walking by . another neighbor has started a facebook page to help collect donations to help the family. whether by land or air, when you head out to visit family this holiday season allow for extra travel time. aaa predicts almost 2 million marylanders will take to the skies or the road. that's the most travelers in more than that decade. aaa says 90% of marylanders will drive, most will head further from home than last year. some of the favorite ravens players are making their own holiday rounds collecting gifts for children who otherwise might not get them. we have more on the outpouring of holiday spirit from the players and the fans tonight in baltimore county. >> reporter: that's right. a great deal of generosity and a great program means a lot of

[ rap music ]. . >> reporter: at jimmie's seafood in baltimore, more ravens team up for a toy drive, this one led by the battle tested united states marines and their toys for tots program. >> we can put a smile on 2, 3,000 kids' faces. >> reporter: all of these toys

a network journalist is freed after a five-day ordeal in syria. he was captured after crossing into northwest syria from turkey. their escort was killed and he was load nood a container -- loaded into a container truck. during an ensuing fire fight engel and his crew escaped unharmed. no ransom demands were made. police are still trying to determine the motive behind the connecticut school shooting. but detectives say the 20-year-old shooter may have been mentally ill and he may not have gotten the help he needed. now a call to improve the count's mental health treatment. we talk to a local expert as to what can be done to avoid more tragedies. >> reporter: it's been widely reporter adam lanza suffered some kind of personality disorder but it's unclear if his family ever tried to get him help to prevent him from turning violent. >> do we want connecticut to
