good afternoon. i'm don scott. >> i'm jessica kartalija. here's what people are talking at and watching closely today, the north east bracing for a super winter storm with as much as 3 feet of snow expected to fall. blizzard warnings are in effect from manhattan to maine. it's already starting to snow isn't the big apple. it's expected to keep coming down with the heaviest accumulations tonight and tomorrow up there. here we've got rain starting well before dawn. commuters at penn station had their umbrellas up. gloomy skies remain but the rain has stopped for a moment. will we be seeing any snow?

wjz is live with first warning weather coverage for you. marty bass is in the out back and meteorologist tim williams in the weather center. good afternoon, tim. >> good afternoon. we are watch ing ing two portions of a system coming together. the juice of it all is moving up the coastline. you see that. marty and i were just talking about that. with these types of colors if this had been a tropical storm of any type we would be concerned. it's moving up the coastline. the second phase is moving on in. that's bringing with it the cold air. that's moving on into the northeast. in between, we don't have much going on here at all. we do have a winter weather advisory on the tip of the state and they're not even a major concern. they're not even on our list issued by the national weather service. they will just alert you that there could be some winter concerns as these storms continue to move on through higher elevations and the tip of cecil county over in northeast, maryland. this low is moving up. the precipitation type a rain event except for

maybe tonight when the temperatures drop. for more on that and what we can expect, sending it out to marty. >> reporter: thank you very much. good afternoon. let's take a look at a graphic. we've been hear ing ing of a 2 foot plus snowfall. my worry are the areas effected by super storm sandy. this is one big upper level nor'easter. that means maybe steady winds on those coastal areas of 50 miles an hour with an occasional gust of 70 to 75. that would be a hurricane strength gust. there's going to be problems with title surge and high tide. that's another part of this story to keep your eye on. you're going to be seeing a lot of love shots. there are other areas in new england that are going to get it worse. take a look at where that cold air has

settled in, over new england. for us our air is going to start coming out of the west. you can see that there's really not a lot of frigid central canadian air. that means some mild conditions for us for the seasonal. meteorologist tim williams will expand on that during our first warning weather segment now from the dry outside back inside. >> thank you. a powerful winter storm is getting ready to slam the northeast. carly hall has the latest for wjz from harford, connecticut. >> the first flakes started falling in new jersey around 6:00 a.m. new york city jogers and dog walkers took the friday morning flurries in stride. by tomorrow manhattan could be buried under a foot of snow. >> if it gets crazy i'll stay in. if not keep moving.

>> parts of new york and new jersey that are still recovering from super storm sandy are bracing for powerful winds and storm surges. hundreds of plow trucks are ready to spread 250,000 tons of all the salt. >> people are preparing for 2 feet of snow. power outages are a major concern because hurricane force winds are expected to hit this city. >> this home dee d -- depo was busy this morning. people are stocking up. >> i got some extra milk, extra flashlights. it's not that bad as long as you have everything you need. i wouldn't say i welcome it. >> amtrak trains will stop running between new york and boston this afternoon. many airports are shutting down, canceling thousands of flights. >> many schools across new england are closed today or letting their students out

early. remember to stay with wjz for first warning weather coverage. for instant updates go to cbsbaltimore.com. there's some breaking news this noon. robert gladden, the teen charged in the perry hall high school shooting will be tried as an adult. the decision was just made. the 15-year-old is still facing the charge of attempted first degree murder. he's accused of opening fire inside the school cafeteria on the first day of class back in august seriously injuring daniel borowy. a troubling story out of annapolis. police say they found the body of a 2-year-old child allegedly killed by her mother. 25-year-old chelsea booth is charged with first and second degree murder in the death of her daughter, cassidy. authorities found the little girl's body in a pile of trash. at last check booth is being held without bail. after days and days of waiting for an explanation we know the probable cause of the

sub power outage. ron matz is live with this. >> reporter: the cause of the super bowl black out was a faulty relay. the device had been installed to protect the stadium from the cable failure. the power failure cut lights to about half of the stadium for 34 minutes, halting play between the ravens and the san francisco 49ers. the device has been removed and replacement equipment will be installed. don, back to you. >> thank you. power company officials say said that relay performed without problem during the sugar bowl. the black out was something ravens head coach john harbaugh joked about on the late show with david letterman. harbaugh walked onto the set to the song we are the champions. he was asked a number of questions including how it felt to beat his younger

slick start in some parts of the area temperatures have rebounded nicely. rock hall checking in at 37. northeast wind across the region, higher winds up towards elkin at 20 miles per hour. everyone else just a light wind. just follow the trail of snow, the blue indicating the snow. we have two portions of this system moving through one up the coastline bringing all the rain and moisture, the other one moving in from the west going to tuesday with that and -- going to fuse with that. all the snow primarily in new england and northeast. the winter weather warnings are up north and northwest of new york. there's a blizzard warning that you can't see. all the heavier snow up to 3 feet in new england. temperatures are going to drop a little bit. we will get into the 30s.
