stunning announcement, pope benedict xvi steps down. >> why he says the time is right. i'm kai jackson. >> i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. catholics are stun ned by the pope's resignation. now the question is, who will replace pope benedict xvi. a report from the vatican. >> pope benedict xvi stunned the vatican saying he no longer has the strength to do the job. the 85-year-old says he will step down at the end of the month becoming the first pope to resign in 600 years. church leaders express their sadness. >> it's like watching your own dad get old and admit that he's not up to all the duties that being the head of the family

before easter at the end of march. >> contenders to be his successors include archbishop of mulan and vienna. three people are dead following a shooting inside a delaware courthouse. it happened in near by wilmington, stunning people arriving for court this morning. wjz is live. are jessica -- jessica kartalija has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: police did say it stemmed from a domestic dispute are are unclear of a motive. >> delaware police are still trying to figure out what led to an early morning shooting inside a wilmington courthouse. >> a loan gunman walked into the lobby area of the county courthouse and opened fire. >> it happened around 8:00 this morning. >> i heard two shots. that's when i re acted and turned around

and he ran out of the building. >> two women were killed, one believed to be the suspect's ex-wife. >> she said there's been a shooting. as i stated before, i couldn't make out what she was saying because she was distraught. i'm not sure exactly sure if it happened in front of her or whatever the case may be. >> two capital police officers were also shot but wearing bullet proof vests and are expected to survive. the suspect was discovered dead at the scene. >> we're investigating whether that was the result of the exchange of gunfire or a self-inflicted wound. >> police searched all the floors of the building to make sure there wasn't another gunman on scene. >> i have talked to them several times. they were moved to jury services and searched. my judge's secretary was es

courted out of the building by the swat member. >> reporter: now the shooting comes on the same day that wilmington's police chief was supposed to attend a round table meeting on gun safety with vice president joe biden. >> thank you. police aren't release ing ing details on the identities of the victims. the manhunt for an accused cop killer continues in reporter: good afternoon california -- in california. >> 600 tips have come in since the lapd offered a $1 million reward for former officer christopher dorner. >> we have hundreds of detectives and investigators that are working on every clue. >> dorner's whereabouts remains a mystery. >> officers came out here, surrounded the lows, locked it down. >> agents are stopping

everything car crossing the mexican border. dorner's burned up pick up was found last week. two dozen officers continue to search homes and cabins. >> they opened all the doors and looked in places a person could be. >> investigators have been on dorner's trail since the killing of a police captain's daughter. he's also accused of killing a river side officer on thursday. >> the largest manhunt has the department spread thin. thousands of officers are searching for dorner as they also try to protect their own. >> dorner vowed to shoot police officers and their families as revenge for his firing from the lapd 5 years ago. >> to have your family targeted because they're related to you that is absolutely terrifying. >> authorities are providing around the clock protection for 50 officers and their families. >> the lapd says the money for

the $1 million reward is not just from police organizations corporations and private donors contributed. a man is charged with murder after he killed a woman and set her house on fire. denise is live with more. >> reporter: police found the body of 32-year-old jennifer conyers in the basement after putting out the fire. monte carter was arrested over the weekend. conyers was beaten to death. she was bound with electrical cords and dragged to the basement. when carter was arrested police say they found blood from the victim on his clothing. police say carter used the victim's atm card several times to buy cigarettes and other items. >> thank you. police say the victim and the suspect did know each other. crime is just one of topics being covered by major stephanie rawlings blake in her annual state of the city address. the mayor says the economy and money issues remain the biggest problem for the city to deal

with. >> our city faces serious structural deficits between slow growing revenues and faster growing expenses. without corrective action this shortfall totals nearly $750 million over 9 years. the put that number into perspective it's more than what we spend on police, fire, health and recreation and parks annually. >> wjz will have much more on the state of the city address coming up on eyewitness news at 5:00. 3 days later and people across much of the northeast are still digging out from the historic blizzard. long island got hammered. some places got more than 30 inches of snow. michelle miller reports from smith town. >> this is what a 32 mile stretch of the long island expressway looked like for much of the weekend. car after car buried under the snow. >> there were hundreds of

residents literally who were within miles after making their way back to their houses when the snow just swallowed them up. >> similar scenes unfolded across long island's roadways. even emergency vehicles were left stranded. >> if they had a plow we would be home. >> many couldn't be freed until saturday. >> just came to a complete standstill. >> priscilla was stuck for 12 hours. she began to write what she thought would be good-bye letter to her children. >> what's the first thing you're going to do? >> hug them, kiss them. >> for much of sunday officials worked to clear the expressway using heavy equipment to move stuck cars. trucks rumbled up and down the highway breaking up the ice on the road surface. >> you have a historic amount of snowfall. it doesn't go away

with the murder of a 15-year-old girl who was part of president obama's inauguration ceremony. the victim's family is hoping charges will follow. >> none of us will get our hopes up until there are charges. >> those charges may be imminent against two men in police custody. they were arrested this morning near 67th and south chicago avenue. >> it's comforting to know that one less killer is off the street. >> the 15-year-old high school student had just returned from president obama's inauguration and was seeking cover from a storm with friends in a ken wood park when witnesses say a gunman opened fire last month. this morning they called her mother to tell her about the arrest, which came less than 24 hours after her daughter's funeral. first lady michelle obama the major, governor pat quinn and others attended the service for a young woman who has become the national and tragic face of

chicago's violence. >> we're wishing that people hear us and hoping that changes take police. >> police say the suspect in question are ages 18 and 20. a florida police officer is disciplined for punching a man in the face. take a look at the scene here in orlando. an intoxicated man was upset after losing his wallet. he spit in the officer who said he wouldn't find it. the officer punched him to the ground. the officer's actions were too extreme the department said. can wall street start the week on the right note? all the markets lost ground today. here's a look at the updated numbers. the dow was off 22, s and p is down a point and the nasdaq is off 2. let's go to new york where alexis has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> stocks started the trading week lower as problems in europe weighed down wall street. greek farmers launched a campaign to

welcome back. we had that rain this morning. that is gone. we are going to start off with the doppler. it has moved off to new england where all that snow fell over the weekend. now some rain and ice on top of that snow. for us, here's how it looked when it moved through. clouds broke up in western starts of the state this

afternoon. not so much over baltimore. we had the south western wind bringing in warmer air. a wind advisory is going to go into effect over night. not quite the level of friday night into saturday morning. wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour out west. 30 miles per hour for the rest of us. this is the warmth it's bringing. 60 in cumberland. it's been a battle, but up to 50 degrees right now in baltimore. that's about 8 degrees above where we were yesterday. where it's at 60, it's 20 degrees warmer. we did top out so far today at 52 degrees. you can see the average is 44. we're way above average. we're not going to hang onto this warm for very long.

here's that massive storm. on the northern side there was a blizzard over the plains. for us, just some rain in between and that's now gone. sunshine return tomorrow and when it's down to our south it's going to form a new low. this is a very interesting set up. cold air will be in place and it will be over night starting wednesday continuing into the over night hours. we could see a winter mess around here. this is not a massive storm. for us a rain, snow, sleet mix is possible. that will start on wednesday and continue to the early morning hours of thursday before this will get out of here. we have a bigger storm coming in and still a lot of details to work out with that one but we'll keep you updated. small craft advisory in effect through tuesday. the forecast for tonight that wind coming in but it will present some

are reacting. mike schuh has reaction. >> it comes as a shock. the archdiocese arrange ed d a news conference. archbishop lori said he hoped to have a quiet morning. >> the news left catholics trying to understand what happens. at a news conference the archdiocese of baltimore respected his decision. >> my single task this morning is to request the prayers of the faithful of the archdiocese of baltimore and the prayers of all women and men of goodwill for pope benedict, as he concludes his long and loving service to the church. >> earlier after morning mass i shared the news with this woman. >> i'm sort of very surprised. i guess i'm sort of shocked. i've never heard of a pope

police are canvassing her neighborhood passing out fliers of a description of the suspect. >> thank you. neighbors say there have been several recent home break ins but police won't say if robbery is what led to the woman's murder. a deadly accident involving a car and school bus in carroll county. it happened just before 7:00 this morning. the driver of a ford focus lost control around a sharp turn and slammed into a school bus. 24-year-old devon spence of westminster died at the scene. there were five students on the bus but they were not hurt. a drift at sea. right now more than 4,200 passengers and crew on a carnival cruise ship are stranded after fire crippled the ship in the gulf of mexico. the coast guard is being called in to tow the ship. more on the situation. >> when the 3,143 vacationers

boarded on thursday they thought they would be home monld. monday. a fire in the -- monday. a fire knocked out the ship. it's not drifting in the gulf of mexico, nearly 500 miles from galveston. bethany and a bunch of girlfriends are on the ship. her husband said he had no idea there was a problem for 7 hours after the fire. >> carnival called me to tell me that there was a problem that there was a fire in the engine room and that the fire was uncontained and everything was all okay. >> the ship has no cell phone service and bethany couldn't call until another carnival ship pulled up alongside the trifrm. >> she was crying saying they had no power no running water no way to use the bathroom. >> in a news release carnival

says it will be towed the mexico and from there it will arrange travel home for its passengers. all of the passengers on board will get refunds and transportation expenses. >> if they would tell you the truth it would not be so bad. >> now the vessel next to departure scheduled this week have been canceled. those on those trips will get full refunds an discounts towards future cruises. gas prices in maryland and across the nation continue the rise. gas prices jumped nearly a quarter per gallon. nationally the average is $3.59 a gallon. here in maryland we're paying a bit more than that. $3.60 for a gallon. last month we were paying $3.42.

an unusual end to a police chase on a highway in arizona. the fleeing vehicle reached speeds nearly 100 miles per hour before the driver slowed down. officers finally forced the suv into a wall and the suspect surrendered and is now behind

bars. mary is live with the news room on a high profile case. >> reporter: a woman charged with killer her lover told the jury she woke him from sleeping in his bed to find the victim having sex with her. jody ryas faces first degree murder. she said she killed him in self-defense. prosecutors say it was a jealous rage. alexander was stabbed 27 times and shot in the head. >> thank you. defense attorneys have yet to explain why she attempted to clean the scene, washing his bedding and camera and what happened to the weapons. president obama will address a number of high profile issues at tomorrow night's state of the union address. among them, gun violence jobs and sequestration. >> when president obama stands before congress tuesday night to deliver his state of the union address he'll be focused on the

21 food companies joined leaders in new york city to announce they lowered salt in their products. >> the efforts they've made to reduce salt are going to have a big impact on public health. >> most people consume a teaspoon of salt a day. that's more than double the amount recommended. new research shows as many as a half a million lives could be saved over 10 years if americans reduced salt 40%. >> lowering sodium is the goal to lower blood pressure, prevent stroke, heart attacks. >> he can avoid extra salt. >> i'm eat ing this way the rest of my life. i'm not going to change that because i want to stay healthy. >> he tried to stick with vegetables exercises and takes his medication to keep his sugar in check. >> this isn't new york's first time trying to improve people's

here it is way offshore now. most areas picked up a quarter to 1/3 of an inch. nice little batch of rain moved across the region. actually it was a warm front. a weak cold front will cross the region, that's why the winds will pick up and we will get into this somewhat cooler air. boston some melting snow up there. it's going to take a while. 40 degrees there. in the 50s with humid air to the south, some more thunderstorm activity could be happening in the south. a lot of rain across texas, louisiana and the deep south. to the north of us, low pressure. that's heading up towards canada. front moved through our region. by wednesday another area of low pressure is going to form off the east coast and move away. the question here is, how much
