christopher dorner,. fugitive showdown. a gun battle between police and los angeles ex-cop on the run for murder charges. >> two deputies shot and a cabin up in flames. where is christopher dorner now? hello, everyone. >> we begin with breaking news. >> wjz has learned from police in big bear california that they have pulled a body from the burned out cabin where ex-police officer christopher dorner was

believed to be hiding. this after a deadly shootout with officers. this is a dramatic ending to a week-long nightmare. >> reporter: flames poured out of the cabin where police believe christopher dorner was holed up. police found themselves in a shootout when they swarmed the area tuesday afternoon. cbs reporter carter evans was near the scene and recorded the gun battle on his cell phone. >> i hear some screaming. >> reporter: through deputies were shot in the exchange, one of them has died. >> enough is enough. it's time to turn yourself in. it's time to stop the bloodshed. it's time to let this event and let this incident be over. >> reporter: officers were responding to a report of a man matching dorner's description driving a stolen truck in the mountains. >> he crashed the car and then took off into the forest.

>> reporter: security here is tight. people must clear checkpoints like this one. officers found his burned out truck. the former officers had been on the run since last week when he alleged shot and killed an officer. theresa garcia cbs news. dna tests will be done to confirm that the burned remains are those of christopher dorner. we are also following breaking news back here in baltimore. a police trainee shot in a training exercise by a baltimore police instructor. all police training has been shut down today. kai jackson has more on the tragic case still unfolding. >> reporter: that's right. this police training accident has left a trainee fighting for his life. he is in critical condition tonight and it's resulted in a

major shake-up at the baltimore city police department. dramatic video from sky eye chopper 13 of a police trainee being loaded into a medevac hospital after being shot. it happened at the former rosewood center in owings mills baltimore county. a candidate in training with the university of maryland police was shot in the front of the head by a baltimore police trainee instructor in what's being called a training accident. >> he is currently in the operating room with our chief of neuro trauma. he's stable but any thoughts or predictions about long-term neurologic outcome are way to early. >> reporter: the events with unclear. also unclear is whether it was protocol for a live run to be chamberered in a weapon during

exercises. the victim was medevacked to shock trama downtown. >> currently our prayers and support are with the trainee and the family at this tough time. >> reporter: a somber police commissioner made a stunning announcement following the shooting. until a thorough investigation is complete, all trainee operations have been shut down. >> i immediately shut down all police academy operations in training throughout the entire organization until we do an assessment and an evaluation for safety. >> reporter: and this is what we know tonight. maryland state police, internal affairs of the baltimore city police department will conduct an investigation intoa this shoot handgun. all we know about the instructor at this time is he will stand down. according to the commissioner we should point out that no other information is being given out about this trainee who was shot. his family is here but because other family members are far

away they have asked his name and details about him not be released at this time. back to you. >> thank you kai. maryland state police are leading the investigation because the shooting happened on state property. a university of maryland student's murder/suicide stuns those on campus. he shot a student and then turned the gun on himself. >> reporter: the university community is still in shock with two students dead and another in the hospital. police say 23-year-old dayvon green shot both of his rommates before turning the gun on himself. it all started here inside this offcampus home around 1 a.m. investigators say green lit several fires in the backyard and the basement. when his roomies went to put them out green pulled out a 9

mm handgun and shot two of them. one ran away, and then green shot himself in the backyard. police say a bag with a fully loaded semiautomatic weapon, a baseball bat and a machete were all found green's body. defendants say he suffered from a mental illness. >> he had been prescribed medication for this mental illness. . morning cloudy, 39 degrees completes first morning forecast is coming up. we begin you an update to our breaking news in cal. los angeles police are disputing reports that the body of christopher dorner the former officer on the round has been found. investigators have not yet entered the cabin where he was hiding because it's still too hot from this evening's fire. they have no body at this point they tell us. dorner is still considered at large. we bring you the latest in this quickly changing story as we get it. incredible video from a skydiver in california who receives a scare after he jumps. the parachute released too early causing him to go into a tail spin for 20 minutes. he was unconscious when he came crash together ground. he survived after spending two weeks in the hospital. an f aa investigation revealed the parachute was flawed and should not have been used. two construction workers

were injured when their crane crashes on to a churchd in northern virginia. the two men were taken to hospital with minor injuries. the crew was making repairs to the steeple. the operator felt it was shaking and got the two men to the roof before it tipped over. a nearby school was evacuated. the nightmare for passengers aboard a carnival cruiseship continues. passengers say they have been forced to the deck because of the disgusting conditions. the fire in the engine room left the ship with limited power and working bathrooms. the ship game became disabled on sunday afternoon. a group of parents want a separate prom for gay and lesbian students. the issue started when an online petition was posted after two girls said they wanted to go to

the first official workouts get underway tomorrow with pitching and defensive drills beginning. some fans with disappointed more star players weren't added but the personality of this team is no frills and hard work. >> we are a working class team and this is who we are in baltimore and i think that resonated with the fans and they supported us and they were there every step of the way and particularly in august, september, and october. and, you know, i'd like to see that same ball chub and that same relationship -- club and that same relationship with the fans. >> a number of position players have reported to training camp early. the first full squad practice is friday. the full spring training game one week from saturday. college basketball has a similar story unfolding with the towson tigers, a team that won one game last season now
