deserve a simple vote. and the westminster dog show, banana joe takes home the top prize at the westminster kennel dog show. this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, february 13th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning it appears the manhunt for a former los angeles policeman suspected in a deadly campaign against the l.a. police department is over. law enforcement officials believe the massive manhunt for christopher dorner ended about 80 miles east of los angeles in big bear, california. man thought to be dorner barricaded himself inside a cabin and opened fire. the cabin suddenly caught fire and burned to the ground. the sheriff's department says unidentified human remains have been found inside. now edward lawrence is in big

bear this morning. good morning, edward. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. investigators were just able to going side the cabin this morning and find out there were human remains of a body. they'll have to use forensic testing to positively i.d. exactly who the body is but they do believe it's christopher dorner. sources tell cbs news christopher dorner is inside this bushed out cabin. police cannot yet identify the body, but they do believe dorner was inside when the cabin caught fire. police had the cabin surrounded at the time. >> and there's no indication at all that he escaped during the fire. >> we believe he's still inside the cabin, yes. >> reporter: the police picked up his trail tuesday after someone reported being carjacked. >> mr. dorner jumped out in front of my truck, and he stopped me at gunpoint. he said i don't want to hurt you. he said get out, walk up the road, and take your dog with you.

cbs reporter carter evens captured the fire fight on his cell phone camera. two police officers were hit. one is now dead. the other wounded. officials focused their search on the big bear area after the police found his pickup truck burning in the woods here. police went door to door searching cabins for the suspect, but bless learn head didn't get very far from where his truck was found. >> the cabin he was hiding out in, and we don't know for how long, it could have been for some time, was actually across the street from the police command post where they'd been running this operation from. >> reporter: dorner is believed to have killed four people since february 3rd. he posted a manifesto on facebook claiming he was seeking revenge for being fired from the lapd. until the remains can be positively identified, the lapd says that they will continue protective details on 50 families.

officers and their families who are named in the manifesto that dorner wrote, and those protective details will last, again, until the body is positively identified. reporting live near big bear edward lawrence. anne-marie? >> edward lawrence thank you very much. well a determined president obama pressed his political agenda during his state of the union address. there was little compromise during last night's one-hour speech as the president pushed congress to push an issue ranging from gun control. he goes to north carolina to further outline his proposal. al just released cbs news poll found 52% approve of the job president obama is doing, but 54% believe the country is on the wrong track. susan mcginnis is in washington. good morning, susan. >> hey, good morning, anne-marie. yeah, the president seemed emboldened and unyielding last night. he fleshed out lots of the themes from tin august rail address talking about how to get the middle class thriving again and talking about how to revive the economy and also unveiled

some new initiative including universal preschool and voting initiativess and raising the minimum wage burke he gave the speech before a deeply divided congress many of whom believe when it comes to the nation's problems, government is not the solution. >> fellow americans -- >> president obama used the first state of the union address of his second term to send a message to lawmakers, get to work. >> the american people don't expect government to solve every problem, but they do expect us to put the nation's interests before party. >> the hour-long speech focused mainly on domestic and economic issues and on the need for a divided congress to compromise. he said political brinksmanship, threats of shutdown and unilateral spending hurts the nation. >> let's agree to keep the government open and pay our bills on time and always uphold the full faith and credit of it the united states of america.

>> the president drew strong applause when he announced 34,000 troops would return from afghanistan by this time next year, half the u.s. force there. he also got a standing ovation when he talked about gun laws. the president said bills on background checks and large magazines are being discussed and that lawmakers owe it to victims of gun violence to bring them to the floor. >> they deserve a vote. gabby giffords deserves a vote. the families of newtown deserve a vote. >> in the republican response florida senator marco rubio said the president's economic plans would hurt the middle class. >> mr. president obama, i don't oppose your plans because i want to protect the rich. i want to oppose the plan because i want to protect our neighbors. >> president obama will make his case to the american people with rallies later this week in georgia and illinois. now, in an indication of how willing republicans are to compromise house speaker john boehner said yesterday immigration is about the only item on the president's list that has a chance of passing this year. anne-marie?

>> susan mcginnis in washington. thank you. well, the president also pushed his case for quick action on immigration reform. mr. obama called for stronger border security and a responsible pathway to earned citizenship. >> we know what needs to be done. and as we speak, bipartisan groups in both chambers are working diligently to draft a bill and i applaud their efforts, so let's get this done. send me a comprehensive immigration bill in the next few months and i'll sign it right away, and america will be better for it. let's get it done. the president's proposals like immigration reform face a divided congress including a house that has an agenda of its own. nancy cordes has more. >> the republicans are not reacting so positively to the president's state of the union

address as they did to his inaugural address. this time their address has been more muted and they did rise and applause a few times during his speech when he talked about immigration reform and some of his job creation proposals, when he talked about ending the war in afghanistan, and when he talked about improving health care for soldiers and veterans. but there are a number of things that he called for that will be very difficult to get through a republican-controlled house, most notably gun control measures, particularly when it comes to an assault weapons ban, but also some of his immigration ideas, some of his ideas when it comes to minimum wage which he said he'd like to see come to $9 an hour. republicans are saying let's see what you can get through the democratically controlled senate fit and then we'll consider your proposal. nancy cordes cbs news, capitol hill. well, coming up on "cbs morning news," continuing coverage of the state of the union.

all-time high set in october of 2007. the nasdaq fell 5. gas prices keep going up. aaa says the cost for a gallon of gas nationwide is now $3.60. that's up 7 cents in one week and 30 cents in the last month, and it could get worse. the government says gas prices should peak at an average of $3.73 a gallon in may. comcast will buy the rest of nbcuniversal from ge way ahead of schedule. the cable company will purchase the remaining 49% for $16.7 billion. comcast will also buy nbc's 30 rockefeller plaza for $1.4 billion. comcast has owned a majority stake of nbcuniversal since january 2011. and good news for travelers. according to a new government report, airlines lost fewer bags last year. the nation's airlines lost or damaged three bags for about every 1,000 passengers.

high. best in show at the 137th westminster kennel club dog show went to a little black dog who is starting his retirement on a high note. marlie hall was there with all the action. >> reporter: banana joe, an affenpinscher is top dog at the westminster kennel club dog show. he took the title, beating out an american sheepdog, a hound, a german wire-haired dog, and a smooth fox terrier terrier. dog lovers had mixed reaction. >> the after enpincher was a little black beauty simply adorable. >> the affenpinscher was a cute dog. >> reporter: not your kind of dog. >> not my kind of dog. >> reporter: banana joe beat 128
