>> we are following several developing stories. first, the shooting of a deputy trainee. wjz's derek valcourt is there with new on the investigation and what went wrong. >> reporter: of course this all happened during a training exercise. now, wjz has learned from several sources that apparently one of the officers who was there during the training exercise put his service weapon back on before going to lunch. and then, for some reason, when he returned from lunch, did not switch out his service weapon with the simulation training weapon that they are supposed to use. >> as medics rush our university of maryland police trainee into his 40s onto our waiting medivac helicopter, sky eye chopper 13 captures officers labeling each other at the site of the old, now- abandoned, rosewood psychiatric hospital in oi thinks with mills. it is unclear exactly what happened.

so far, investigators will only say that the trainee was taking part in a police training exercise when he was somehow shot in the head with live ammunition. the news outraging to the mayor. >> is no acceptable reason for why live rounds were at a training exercise. and i was so angry, i was almost speechless. >> reporter: the may haver or visited the hospital tuesday and said she personally promised the trainee's family she would get to the bottom of what went wrong. they shut step down all police training operations until a review. all safety procedures can be completed. >> reporter: and wjz has learned several top commanders at the police academy have been suspended as a result of this incident. >> one of the things i want to make really clear is i probably have more questions than you have. it will just take time to get answers to those questions. because for me, it's unacceptability. >> reporter: family members have asked not to identify the victim. doctors say he's out of

surgery, in intensive care, and we're told he is responsive. >> any thoughts or pro dictions about long-term neurological outcome are a long way away. >> reporter: we are told the victim, that trainee, is still in critical condition. he is responsive. we know very little about him, only that he is in his 40s. that this is his first law enforcement-type job that he started with the university of maryland police force back in july. we're live at shock trauma, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. wjz's complete coverage of the trainee shooting continues at 6:00. at that time, mike hellgren will investigate police training practices and what went wrong in owings mills. the other developing story for you that we're following, wintry weather, moving into maryland. let's take a live look outside. some areas are seeing rain and sleet right now. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage.

meteorologist bern bet cood -- bernadetteed ands and bob turk are tracking this latest system. >> yes. we have temperatures above freezing but just cold enough for some of that sleet to come down. take a look at moisture. a batch of cold moist air. and as temperatures drop, we'll probably start seeing some snowflakes mixing in later on. now, as far as advisories are concerned, two winter weather advisories really. garrett county, well, they may see several inches of snow. and up across northeast maryland, maybe a small ado you meanulation also around the northern delaware area and central jersey. as far as temperatures go. still very mild. 39. 45 in ocean city. 38 in hagerstown. still 37 in oakland and cumberland. so anything falling now is simply going to melt, until temperatures get way back down into the low 30s. now, as far as amounts are concerned, bernadette woods in the outback with that. >> that's right. as bob was saying, it's been warmed it. we got to the rain.

as we head to the evening hours, and the sun sets and this sleet transformation changes over to snow in cases, we could see a small accumulation during those overnight hours. and generally, a coating to an inch. this is not a huge storm for us. across northern tier areas, maybe upwards of 2 inches. in the mountains, could see 4, 5, or 6 inches of snow. that's what we're expecting in the overnight hours. but by tomorrow, sunshine comes out and we're back into the 40s. back inside. police in southern california say the manhunt for an ex-policeman who went on a week-long killing spree is finally over. over. the body of krist fer dorn -- christopher dorner is believed to be inside of a cabin that was the scene of a shootout. >> reporter: bagpipes played as the flag-draped coffin, carrying riverside police

officer michael crane into the church. hundreds of police officers from across southern california, attended the funeral. police say former los angeles officer and navy reservist, christopher dorner, shot and killed crane in an ambush last week. >> i really did not realize the sheer scale of this and how many people are touched by his life. >> reporter: police believe 33- year-old dorner was the man they found inside a charred cabin near big bear. but they have not confirmed it yet. this will that happens, police will continue to provide security for some of the officers and families who dorner threatened to kill. the week-long search for dorner ended with an intense four-hour shootout at the cabin. cbs reporter carl evans was caught in the middle of it. >> we right -- right in the center of the action here. >> reporter: then a single gunshot came from inside the cabin. and it went up in flames. it is not clear how the fire started. >> reporter: tourists and residents here in this mountain town say they are waiting for the human remains in that cabin

to be officially identified. but many here say they already feel relieved. >> very glad that he's taken care of. because he was killing people. >> reporter: dorner is accused of killing four people, and injuring at least two others since last week. in angeles oaks, california, teresa garcia, wjz eyewitness news. >> and police are still providing around-the-clock security for several families of police officers targeted in dorner's manifesto. nearly two years later, baltimore county detectives are still trying to identify a body. a police forensic artist completed a skull reconstruction in an attempt to identify the man. he is a white male, 40 to 60 years of age. the body was found under the i- 695 bridge in black river back in september of 2011. now, anyone with information about the identity of the victim is asked to contact the baltimore county police. it has been 24 hours since a college park student gunned

down two of his roommates, killing one, wounding another, before turning the gun on himself. still, many questions remain. wjz is live. rochelle ritchie talks to those who knew the gunman and lawmakers about the issues of mental illness and gun control. >> reporter: the surviving roommate is out of the hospital tonight and recovering with family. the gunman did not leech a suicide note. only a trail of questions. >> reporter: investigators are still trying to figure out why dayvon green opened fire on his 22-year-old roommate, steven rane, killing him and shooting their third rooment mate, neil owa, before killing himself. >> my thoughts are had is a great tragedy for the community. >> oa survived the gunshot wounds and is now out of the hospital. green's family says he suffered from mental silness and was on medication for the past -- illness and has been on medication for the past year. >> they are working to

determine when and show the shooter's gun was purchased. >> reporter: this brings the issue of mental illness and gun control under the attention of owners. >> university of college park. the gunman is said to have had a promising career as a future engineer. >> green was an undergraduate student here at the university. and gradualitied a year ago. he accelled in the classroom and gained a reputation with students as a brainiac. >> i remember in a math class i was having trouble with in college, he helped me. >> reporter: police say he lured his roommates out of the house. that's when green let off a round of bullets. green died in the hospital. rane then died in the backyard. and police also found a baseball bat, a machete and a fully-loaded uzi in i bag,

belonging to green. i'm rochelle ritchie. now back to you. >> thank you. steve rane was an english major and graduated in howard county in 2009. scene ann's county sheriff is trying something a little different to find wanted suspects. vic is in the newsroom to explain. vic? >> yes. this is a little different. the sheriff is using valentine's day to sweeten up loved ones. >> no one took me up on my offer for flowers or roses. i sat a long time waiting for them. but this year, as i prepare my valentine's day cards for my special, most-wanted valentines, i'm actually making a special offer. >> reporter: the sheriff says he will personally give a dozen roses or cards to the significant others or spouses who give deputies about their whereabouts. that video is on you tube. by the way, the sheriff says the information is confidential. only female suspects are featured in the valentine's day

message. father's day is dedicated to the guys. >> all right. today is ash wednesday. and the first day of lent for many churches. people around the world headed to church to begin their 40 day period of prayer and penance. archbishop lori celebrating his first as archbishop of baltimore. also, a very special ash wednesday for the pope. benedict xvi deliver his last public mass. >> reporter: thousands of faithful gave pope benedict xvi a long ovation near the end of ash wednesday mass. the applause only stopped when the pontiff said "thank you. let's return to prayer ." the 85-year-old holy father looked tired at times during the lengthy mass. he was wheeled down the center aisle when he left the packed basilica. many congratulates -- catholics

were emotional to see him celebrate mass for the last time. >> it was very moving. and i think there was a great deal of affection that could be sensed in the congregation for him. >> it was amazing. i feel so lucky that we were here for this experience. >> reporter: tens of thousands were expected here for the pope's final public appearance on february 27th, a day before he steps down. >> reporter: vatican officials say the pontiff does not expect big fanfare when he leaves. >> he's not the big celebration type of guy. and i think in many way, being pope was difficult to him for that. >> reporter: the vatican announced the conclave to elect a new pope will begin in march. the college of cardinals will choose the exact date when they gather here in rome. at the vatican, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> the vatican says all accounts connected to pope benedict's ministry will be destroyed, including has papal ring, which he used to seal

underground bunker for days, in a dr. phil exclusive. ethan gillman and his mom appeared today. and for the first time, they speak about the ordeal. >> i was afraid i wasn't going to get him back. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview, the mother of 6-year- old ethan gillman tells dr. phil, he now has trouble sleeping. ethan was kidnapped from his school bus and held hostage by vietnam veteran, jimmy lee dykes. ethan and his mom are now speaking about the hostage situation. jennifer kirklanded he first watched his bus driver being killed then watched his captor getting shot. she says her son is still suffering from the trauma. >> did he see mr. dykes shot and killed? >> he absolutely did. >> did he see mr. poland murdered? >> yes, he did. he saw mr. poland shot three or four times. and the other day, we saw a

school bus. and he was fixalitied on that school -- fixalitied on that. he couldn't take his eyes off the bus. >> reporter: ethan has yet to get on a bus. but his mom told dr. phil, he overcame so much while being held captive. ethan has asberger's syndrome and is bipolar. >> i was very proud. ethan complied, did his best and stayed arrive. >> reporter: dr. phil told ethan's mom, that the interview was not the end of the relationship but just the beginning, and he will help the family overcome the trauma. >> and two of dr. phil's closing join if for guidance to help them deal with the trauma and ultimately put it behind him. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check the roads with kristy breslin. >> well, everyone seems to be taking it very slowly out there at this hour. northbound on the harrisburg expressway. heavy traffic there from shawan

road to belfast. on the top side inner loop, that is jammed. from the jones falls expressway all the way around to harford road. the west side inner loop, heavy in that direction, from 95 to security boulevard. also delays on the outer loop from 795 to baltimore national pike. a couple of slow areas on northbound 95. 32 over to 895. and traffic slows down again from 395 to the 895 split. as far as accidents go, fort smallwood at devals highway. gemman highway. and also radicky avenue at marquette road. very heavy traffic there. especially on the inner loop of security boulevard. and the situation is the same. as you can see only the inner and outer loop there at perring parkway. this traffic haven't is -- report is brought to you. every day is a fun wintsder snow day. >> the hurricane center completes a final tally of the destruction from super storm

sandy. only hurricane katrina caused a greater dollar loss. >> reporter: if sandy had hit just 80 miles further south, much of maryland would have been devastated. not that torrential rains and winds didn't cause damage, they did. >> sandy cost the residents of americans about $41 million. >> reporter: that dollar loss was rolled into a final report released by the national hurricane center. >> the hurricane center found 72 people died as a result of sandy. and 77 others died from indirect causes like hypothermia and carbon monoxide poisoning, triggered by power outages. 650,000 homes were destroyed or damaged. >> we need help. >> you have to look at the level of damage we have. it is extremely low.

>> while maryland's emergency management agency says all qualify for help, most will go to somerset county. >> most of the 333 homes had either major damage or were totally destroyed. >> reporter: and one final pair of numbers that grew with the wind. >> about an hour later, the power went completely out. >> reporter: along the east coast, 8 million lost power. 600,000-- 600,000 of them in maryland. >> reporter: while sandy goes into the record books, the next start of the hurricane season is only about 3 months away. >> always preparing for the next event. >> and according to the national hurricane center, super storm sandy was the deadliest storm to hit the midatlantic and northeast in 40 years. nothing like that today. >> thankfully, right? let's take a look at temperatures now. we're still around the 40- degree mark. >> dew point is actually above

live look outside. >> kind of deceiving, actually. >> a little sleet in a few spots. reports of snowflakes falling across southern york county. maybe a little northern carroll county. definitely frederick west. but temperatures are still above the freezing mark. just going to melt for the time being. we're at 40 now. 43 in d.c. 46, hagerstown. light snow there. 35 in oakland snow. even accumulating west of frostburg. dew point still at 33. which means up there in the clouds, it's actually above freezing. 41 westminster. and even up in here, temperatures in the low 40s, upper 40s. still reporting some sleet. just cold enough for that to reach the ground.

43, anapol i guess. they'll get more of a north/northwest flow. that will allow somewhat colder air to move in. that's where we expect to see the snow developing. we said there may be an inch or so by tomorrow morning. to the east of us, very light rain going on from annapolis south and east. that is going to move across montgomery county, frederick and howard county. perhaps it will mix with or change to snow. if it comes in heavy enough, it does drag colder air with it. even though it stays mid-30s, it could accumulate, particularly north and west at this point. temperatures really aren't that cold here in the east. detroit, 38. last report of 39. 31 in chicago. really cold air staying up to the north. now, over the next few days, when you see the temperature dropping and that cold front will get to us. over the weekend we expect to see quite a drop.

meanwhile, one dropping off the coast. that is causing this second low impulse of snow and rain. that's what we'll be looking at tonight. by about 1:00 tomorrow morning, i think we'll be totally done with this system and anything that accumulates, temperatures go back into the mid-40s. over the weekend, another front with chilly air. may be a snow shower on saturday, with the cold air moving in. southwest winds tomorrow, only 5 to 10 knots. then, then slow, sleet and rain. 30 degrees, small accumulation. north. city, yes, 48 by afternoon. with mainly sunny skies. you'll forget all about what happens tonight. >> try to do that every day. thank you, bob. still ahead on eyewitness news at 5:00. a deadly custody battle. why the wife of a man who went on a deadly shootout in a courthouse rampage is forbidden to see her grandchildren.

it is 5:30. rain and sleet in some places. and it's 39 degrees. good evening. thank you for staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. after losing her son to gun violence, a maryland mother is invited to attend the president's state of the union address. monique griego has her reaction to the president's speech. monique? for the past 15 years, carol has been fighting for gun control reform. so for her, last night's speech stirred up rilot of mixed emotions. >> i know this is not the first time this country had debated how to reduce gun violence. but this time, it's different. >> reporter: president obama talking about the need for gun control reform during his state of the union address tuesday night. in the audience was carolyn price, a maryland mother, whose son john was killed by violence in 1998. >> it brings it all back home.

make its fresh again. >> john was accidentally shot by a 9-year-old neighbor who was playing with a loaded gun. in 2009, she helped pass the maryland gun safety act. >> that was groundbreaking for maryland back then. but now what we're trying to do also is to condition with that. >> at the state of the union, she sat with families whose lives were also torn by gun violence. including gabby give on the other hands. >> it was very excite being. something i'll never forget. >> during the speech, he called to get ammunition off the streets. >> each of these vote -- people deserve a vote in congress. >> hardest thing i had ever done was lose my child. at the end of the day, i'm just

john's john's mom. >> reporter: and price went on to say that she is confident new legislation will be passed. >> price attended the state of the union with maryland congressman chris van holland, who was also influential in geth the gun safety act passed. republicans say the proposals president obama laid out in his state of the union address will mean bigger government and higher taxes. tara mergener reports for wjz, to get the public behind him. the president hit the road today. president obama visited a company that makes engine blocks and wheel axles to promote his plan to revitalize american manufacturing. >> i believe in manufacturing. >> volvo shut his doors. the canadian manufacturer took

over to produce parts. but had a hard time finding qualified workers. >> no job in america should go unfailed because somebody doesn't have the right skills skills to get that job. nobody. >> the president is asking congress to fund training for 2 million workers so they can get advanced skills to land the job. >> reporter: getting the kind of training the president is talking about. >> hoping to get my training and get a job here in ashville. >> reporter: a program that lindemar helped set up. to have the workers expand their business. but republicans are not warming up to another government program. >> you know, last night, the president offered up more of the same. higher taxes and more stimulus spending. >> reporter: the gop says the best way it create more manufacturing jobs is with fewer regulations and lower

taxes. in washington, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> the president continues taking his state of the union address tour with a stop in atlanta tomorrow to talk to voters about immigration reform. the disabled carnival cruise ship triumph continues its slow return to port. denise is in the newsroom with more on the conditions aboard the ship. and what worried family members are saying. denise? >> reporter: well, mary, for the 3100 passengers, the four- day luxury cruise is turning into a nightmare, after an engine fire on sunday. the ship has limited power and is now being towed to mobile under a coast guard escort. passengers are reporting deteriorating sanitary conditions. one woman said she spoke with her husband on the ship. and this is what he told her. >> he said that the conditions have gotten so bad that they're asking them to use the rest room in bags. and they were eating onion sandwiches. and that was on monday. >> no one here, from carnival, is happy about the conditions

on board the ship. and we obviously are very, very sorry about what is taking place. >> reporter: carnival says the ship does your have running water and that most of the 23 public bathrooms are working. back to you. mary? >> and denise, thank you. passengers are getting a full refund and a free trip home. triumph is expected to arrive in mobile sometime tomorrow. and carnival is canceling all voyages aboard the triumph, through april. the ntsb and coast guard are investigating the engine room fire. a delaware woman is ordered to stay away from her grandchildren, days after her husband guns down several people inside a wilmington courthouse. dray mark reports, police say the shooting was the result of a long and bitter custody dispute. >> reporter: lanorma latusewitz walked out, surrounded by cameras and a lot of questions. her husband was the man who shot and killed two women inside the new castle county courthouse monday morning.

she was in federal court today to support her son, david matusewitz. david was inside the courthouse when his father shot christine bel ford and her friend laura mull ford. christine was there for a custody hearing and mull ford went with her for support. >> reporter: afterward, authorities questioned david about the shooting. and that's when they learned he was wanted for violating the terms of his probation after bank fraud. he was detained and kept in federal custody. >> reporter: lanorma said walked around without comment. but online, she has been very outspoken and not reluctant to share how much she disliked christine bel ford, her exdaughter-in-law. she was also sentenced and convicted for helping her son kidnap his children in 2007. >> police say thomas matusewitz

gunned down the two women and exchanged gunfire with police, before fatally shooting himself. attorneys for george zimmerman will be back in court tomorrow. zimmerman isn't expected to be present as his legal team discusses possible motives. zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder for shooting arm -- unarmed teen tray von martin. zimmerman said he acted in self- defense. his trial begins in june. time for a quick look at some of the stories you'll find in tomorrow morning's edition of baltimore sun. wrapping up new york's fashion week with a look at highs and lows from the runways. how towson university's men's basketball team has turned around the program in historic fashion. more reports from sarasota, as the orioles pitchers and catchers take the field. for these stories and more, remember to look for the updated forecast from wjz's

london. >> reporter: afghan president hamid karzai said it's time for afghan soldiers to take charge of their country's future. he said local forces are ready to replace american troops. but many say the u.s. is leaving too soon. >> over the next year, another 34,000 american troops will come home from afghanistan. this draw-down will continue. and by the end of next year, our war in afghanistan will be over. [ applause ] >> reporter: president obama says the 11-year conflict is finally coming to a close. but as he put the finishing touches on the street of -- state of address, it claims another round. nato strike killed at least 10 civilians. in the remote mountains of eastern afghanistan. killing the innocent while hunting imsurgents has long made this controversial. analysts say it will likely continue long after u.s. troops

today marks the official start of spring training. mark viviano joins us with more. >> spring training is starting earlier than urge this year. to accommodate the world baseball classic tournament. a number of players will be leaving their major league teams to join their national squads. in our spring training report. among the pitchers, jim johnson. he was credited with a franchise record that was the most saves in the region. that's great. but johnson says now the focus is improvement. >> it's a whole other year. and we have certain things we need to accomplish. and you know, everyone is always trying to improve. and it's not just us.
