hungry, dirty and still miles from shore. >> the crippled carnival cruise ship suffers yet another setback. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> and i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> more trouble for the crippled carnival cruise liner. its to line broke today, further delaying its arrival at port. we are told the line is now repaired. and here's a live look at the ship. still miles off the alabama coast. the cruise liner is limping to shore at an extremely slow rate. passengers are counting the hours until they are back on dry land, after all these days. randall pinkston reports for wjz, from mobile. >> reporter: the gaing way is in place. the terminal has been scrubbed clean for the arrival of the disabled carnival cruise ship triumph. it is expected to be towed into the port of mobile this evening. 3,000 passengers and 1,000

1,000 staff on board. >> i'm thinking we probably won't see the vessel until 7:00 or 8:00. >> i came to get our girls. >> they came to pick up their daughters, who are on the ship with their dads. they say the girls have been crying. >> mommy, i'm so scared. mommy, i don't know what to do. >> been on cruise before? >> this is her sixth one. never had any problem. >> reporter: a fire knocked out power sunday. since then, passengers say life on board has been miserable and disgusting. there's been limited access to food and bathrooms. the kerrigans say toilets have been replaced by plastic bags. her daughter and her ex-husband have been eating onion sandwiches. >> she said, mom, i am so hot. because they put the mattresses in the hallway. >> reporter: carnival plans to bus the passengers to hotels in galveston or houston, texas or new orleans. >> reporter: several other carnival ships have been

loading supplies and food aboard the triumph. carnival is paying for transportation and hotel rooms for the passengers. they are also giving out full refunds for the cruise, a credit towards future cruise and $500 cash. in mobile, alabama, randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. >> we'll take one more look at the carnival triumph, slowly moving to the coast of mobile, alabama, after being adrift at sea. again this afternoon, with the broken tow line. it is makes progress slowly. we'll bring you updates as soon as we have them. we have other breaking news. moments ago, police identified the training instructor dlfled -- involved in the shooting this week. >> reporter: the instructor is 46-year-old william kern. he's an 18-year veteran of the city police department. just a short time ago, state police issued their own investigation, saying the investigation could take weeks. and they are now culling it a

-- calling it a criminal investigation. >> reporter: investigators are interviewing training staff this morning in the wake of the tragic shooting of a university of maryland baltimore police officer during training. baltimore city police were in charge of that training and as wjz first reported, sources say someone present inadvertently switched has service weapon with a simulated weapon, leading to the officer getting shot in the head. live ammunition is typically not used in training. baltimore police are conducting a sweeping investigation with maryland state police into what happened. the incident led to outrage among top officials. >> there's no acceptable explanation for why live rounds were at a training exercise. and i was so angry, i was almost speechless. >> reporter: in the past, guns used in training were brightly colored, as you see in this video. but wjz has learned, in this case, the simulator weapons were not a different color, and they looked and felt very similar to the service weapon.

but former police commissioner ed norris, who works for cbs radio, said there typically are safeguard his place. >> they take your firearm when you go in. you surrender bullets. >> reporter: police are also looking at the absence of high- level supervisors at this training. and they were unaware that the training facility was in use for that purpose. it unfolded tuesday in rosewood, a closed psychiatric hospital in baltimore county. >> we will be transparent and open in assuring that we have a safe and professional police organization. >> reporter: the police commissioner suspended six people in connection with the incident, along with the training program for now. kai? >> all right, mike. thank you. new at 5:00, the baltimore county state's attorney peek speaks with wjz about what is next in this case. a very rough morning commute for people around the region, especially people in anne arundel county. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist tim williams is updating temperatures. first, alex demetrick is live, with the incredible number of

accidents during the morning rush. alex? >> reporter: those were spread over a number of counties. but anne arundel seemed to have the most and the most serious. >> reporter: temperatures dropped low enough to turn overnight snow into thin crust and ice. getting it off cars was the easy part. getting it into work was the hard part. main lines jammed up, especially in anne arundel county. >> 97, 50, route 100. we had reports all over the county of major backups. >> reporter: the reasons were ice-related backups. reported between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. most were not serious but one was deadly. an suv slipped intoan coming traffic -- into oncoming traffic. striking a cement truck. >> there was a female operating that suv. preliminarily, it appears road conditions were a factor. >> reporter: because it was a fatal investigation, accident investigators spent all morning, collecting evidence. but roads weren't the only slick spots.

besides responding to 37 crashes, anne arundel also responded to -- >> six falls. >> people stepping onto their porches or sidewalks at home and slipped. >> reporter: treacherous conditions that vanished with the ice as the morning warmed of. >> reporter: still, the timing could not have been worse, which included a 10-car pileup on route 100. >> meteorologist tim williams is in the first warning weather center, with the updated numbers for us. tim? >> reporter: well, mary, definitely the timing was everything. and the timing was about last night, while we were here, during the news, the temperatures started dropping as the rain started to transition into sleet and then snow. so now, that system is completely out of here. but during the coldest time of the night, and the early morning showers, well, of course, we started to see those problems. and during the overnight, anything that wasn't treated started to freeze over. and that was the problem. today, we have simply warmed up. we are now 48 degrees. we were just 49 as of a few moments ago.

temperatures dropped as of the 4:00 updates. 32 in oakland. 41. normal high is 45 degrees. we have been up around 50. we are 9 degrees now above what we were yesterday. definitely above the high. but we do, again, have another system moving our way. we have been seeing these come through erso many days. -- every so many days. this will be late tomorrow night, into saturday morning. and again, tomorrow will be up around 50 degrees. so again, mild air precedes the next bit of winter weather what is moving our way. we'll talk about the timing of that one, coming up in your complete first warning forecast. kai? >> tim, thank you. there is shock tonight as an olympic track star. the one known as the blade runner is accused of shooting and killing his super model girlfriend. rita nissan has the latest. >> reporter: police quietly escorted olympic track star, oscar astorias into prison. authorities charged the 26-year- old with murdering his

girlfriend, model rivas steamcamp. she was shot four times. they recovered a 9-millimeter pistol. >> a young woman, a 6-year-old did die on the scene of gunshot wounds. astoria is a hero in africa. he made history, becoming the first double-amputee runner to ever compete at the games. >> reporter: the track star made it to the 400-meter semifinals and anchored south africa's team relay, here at the stadium. >> reporter: he had been with his girlfriend for several months. hours before she died, steencamp tweeted about valentine's day, saying it should be a day of love for everyone. >> i knew her quite well. she was a hum pel -- humble person. she was beautiful inside and out. >> reporter: police say they have been called to the athlete's home for domestic trouble. witnesses say they heard screaming before the shooting.

a security guard tries to break up a fight between a woman and a teenage girl, before a group of teens starts attacking the guard. luckily, other guards intervened, pushing the attackers to leave the rink. no arrests have been made because all the teens are still at large, apparently. well, perhaps america's best-known a.l.s. patient lives theor in baltimore. as mike schuh reports, o.j. brigants has helped to raise awareness. and now, a company executive is putting millions into trying to cure the disease. >> seven years after helping the ravens win their first super bowl, o.j. brigants learns he has a.l.s. he's now a player development executive with the club. >> i am very humbled when people say i am an inspiration. my belief is that the same fight deep in my heart is available to everybody. >> reporter: his brain no longer controls his muscles. physically, he's paralyzed. but mentally, he's unchanged.

makers of budweiser and corona beers say they have made concessions to try to convince the justice department to sign off. it filed a lawsuit last month, saying it would create a beer monopoly and mean higher prices for consumers. general motors says profits nearly doubled last quarter. it made money in north america. and $700 million in europe. an investment group that includes billionaire warren buffett, includes heinz. it is the largest in the industry, valued at $23 billion. the company also makes classico spaghetti sauce, ore-ida potatoes. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. a louisiana news team joins the latest dance craze. the man in the background starts the harlem shake, while the anchors look at their scripts. then the beat drops and everyone gets in on the action.

we'll coin that, courtesy of mr. jackson. right now, we're at 48 degrees. we are well above our average high. this time of year, we have gone up now, normal high for this date, 45 degrees. we have been as high as 49. at least officially, our official number for the afternoon has not come in. we may have touched off at 50 in some parts of the area. but upper 40s. we'll call it. 20 is your dew point. relative humidity at 32. air has tried -- dried out nicely. we've had a bet bit of a west and northwest wind. hardly a cloud to be found anywhere, as a result of the dryer conditions, dry dew point in the atmosphere, just drying out as that system moved on through, from last night into this morning. right now our temperature at 32. and higher elevations toward oakland. 41 in ocean city. there's that 50. over in easton, we were talking about that. just south of the metro area, temperatures did spike a little bit higher. 42 in annapolis now, though. 42 on kent island. 45 in rock hall. 48 in columbia, and 46 in bel

air. here's the west wind we were talking about. variable winds across the region now. west wind across the airport. south wind across hagerstown. northeast wind down around d.c. so you get the idea. but they're all very light. what we're going to be watching is another day of temperatures going well up above the average. tomorrow will be higher than today. we expect to be in the low 50s tomorrow. most of our neighbors around the region, mid-atlantic, even the northwest, are pretty much in the same region we are. a little colder, up toward detroit. but the coldest air is up around the great lakes. just follow this line from canada, down toward bismarck, over toward minneapolis and back up toward the northeast. and that's where the really cold air is coming from. it's going to be with us saturday into sunday. the colder part of the weekend, will be the second part of the weekend, heading into sunday. what we're going to be watching, the storm from yesterday, moved on out of here. that's one from this morning as well. we have another one that is going to be moving to the north of us. that's going to provide patchy clouds late tonight. however, what we're going to

focused on. the pipeline we had. we had another one coming through late friday night into saturday. it comes through. temperatures drop. so what comes down is going to stay with us saturday morning. temperatures stay on the cold side. we're not going to rebound like we did last night into today and into tomorrow. so we stay cold for the weekend. temperatures stay primarily in the 30s. and a bit of a wind chill. because the winds are going to pick up as well. that's going to provide problems, potentially late friday into saturday. tomorrow, though, another spring-like day, temperatures up nearly around 50 degrees. tomorrow, we'll be up around 50, as we said. about 53. but tonight, we're going down to just around thon. anything that is still wet on the roads could likely refreeze. but it is so mild out there. some sun. then turning cloudy. 53 for your unpurple friday. >> our director said he'll give us money if we do the shake today. i'm a dollar short. >> dollar won't cover the

people. however, as john blackstone reports, his final victims said dorner did not seem like a bad man. >> hello, everyone. >> karen and jim reynolds are breaking their silence. they're the owners of the mountain resort, where christopher dorner had been hiding, the day police tracked him down. on a routine check of one of their iewnltsdzs, dorner surprised them from upstairs. >> and he opened the door and came out at us. and he had his gun drawn. >> he yelled, stay calm. and ran out. >> he talked to us. trying to calm us down. and saying very frequently, he would not kill us. yeah. >> he said, i don't have a problem with you. i just want to clear my name. >> reporter: dorner had apparently been keeping an eye on karen and jim for days. and although he had broken in and tied them up, he felt compelled to pay them inn unexpected compliment. >> he said, we are very hard workers, we're good people.

he talked about how he could see jim working on the snow every day. >> he had been watching us and saw me shoveling the snow. >> reporter: dorner left the couple behind and tried to take their car. but he soon returned, asking how to start their keyless nissan. later, the reynolds' managed to undo their restraints and called police. a few hours later, the manhunt was over. and although the reynolds were aware of dorner's alleged trail of violence, they couldn't help but feel some compassion for their captor. >> i didn't wish him dead, though, at any point. i really didn't. i prayed for him a lot. and -- and i'm praying for his family now. >> reporter: dorner is linked to the killings of a former los angeles police captain's daughter and her fiance, as well as the murders of two law enforcement officers. the carnival cruise ship triumph gets another bad break. a broken to -- tow line set the ship adrift off the

coast of alabama. here's a live look at the ship as it moves toward shore. it is fixed and is expected to return to mobile in the next 7 to 10 hours. the ship lost engine power after a fire five days ago, and the fun turned into anger, desperation and frustration. there is only one working elevator on the ship which is going to complicate getting back onshore. passengers talk about limited food, and a tent city on the tanning deck. wjz is closely monitoring the ship. we'll bring you updates as soon as we have them. the use of one emergency contraceptive is on the rise among american women. and kai is in the newsroom with more on the increased use of the morning after pill. >> that's right. a new government report shows more women are using the morning after pill than ever before. according to -- to the study, one out of 9 females, ages 15 to 44, say they have used morning after pills such as

plan b. that's up from 2002. half the women say they used the pills because they had unprotected sex. others say because their chosen form of birth control method malfunctioned or failed. use was most commono -- common among women, ages 20 to 24. >> a prescription is still required for women under 17, so it is still behind counters. tara mergener reports. little facetime with young people, including preschool. >> reporter: children at this atlanta area preschool greeted their special classroom visitor with hugs. esident obama stopped by to play little "i spy" and make the case that case that early education centers like this one, do more than just get children ready for kindergarten. >> they're also more likely to

read and do math at grade level, hold a job. >> reporter: the president wants to make preschool available to every child in america. he's pushing a plan that would give states incentive to expand their own pre-k programs with an emphasis on helping low- income families. >> the lack of access to a great preschool education can have an impact on their entire lives. >> reporter: here at martha's table in washington, where there is a long, pre-k waiting list, any additional financial help would be welcomed. >> the small grouping. and that building of a child in a holistic way. >> yep. >> costs. >> reporter: before the president can move forward with expanding preschool programs, he'll have to get the states and house republicans on board. >> reporter: congressman john kine chairs the house education committee. he says the federal government already spends millions on 40 different early childhood programs. >> it's very hard to justify new money until we see what his priorities are and how he's going to pay for it.

>> reporter: republicans want to see the president's entire budget before they sign off on any new programs. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> the impending automatic budget cuts are threatening current head start programs. the obama administration is warning that 70,000 students could be kicked out if the cuts take effect. new documents are giving insight into the relationship between former u.s. presidents bill clinton and richard nixon. the recently declassified letters showed the two developed a friendship. before he passed away, nixon advised clinton on foreign affairs, particularly those with russia. the documents are part of an exhibit opening friday at the nixon presidential library, marking the 100th anniversary of his birth. new york city mayor michael bloomberg is calling for a ban on styrofoam. he made the announcement this afternoon during the state of the city address. mayor bloomberg says this is

part of a bigger plan to double recycling by 2013. bloomberg says the plastic foam makes up about 20,000 tons of the city's waste each year. as rome prepares for the upcoming conclave to elect a new pope, there are new details about pope benedict xvi's day- to-day listening when he re -- living when he retires at the end of the month. danielle nottingham has more from the vatican. >> reporter: the vatican has revealed that pope benedict's closest aide will remain as his private secretary and will also run the new pope's household. the dual road for mong seen -- monsenior. >> no one has said exactly what he's going to do. and it will be benedict who decides what he is anything to do. and even the pope's brother has suggested that the new pope would be wise to consult the former pope from time to time. >> reporter: the pope told parish priests in rome thursday morning, he will be hid hidden

police say he booby trapped it before going on the shooting spree. his next court hearing is in april. a police officer, shot 15 times during the sikh temple massacre. >> lieutenant brian murphy is still recovering from injuries six months after the shooting. murphy rushed to the temple moments after he got the call. he immediately waved to michael page and was hit in the leg, back and head. he kept moving to distract page. and when backup arrived, he told officers to help other victims first. >> he wanted to call me pops and stubborn man and hero, i'll take it. but hero, i still have a hard time with. >> and he'll have to get used being called a hero. murphy was invited to sit with the first lady during president president obama's state of the union speech.

lock raven reservoir. nice out there. ice we had earlier this winter. gone. didn't last that long. and the snow we had this morning, pretty much gone. but tomorrow night, late tomorrow night, really, saturday morning. we have a chance of getting another light dusting. some areas could pick up main maybe an inch. it's possible. we'll show you why in a minute. take a look at temps. very pleasant, warm afternoon. and tomorrow will be each warmer. anything that happens tomorrow night is initially going to melt once again before it gets colder. west winds at 5, 48 degrees. humidity is way down. 32%. dew point is down again to 20 degrees. barometer rising. 29.98 inches. 32 in oakland. that's the hot spot in 50, over in easton. 44 in elkton. and locally, temperature mid- to upper 40s around the region. a little cooler by the bay. 42 in annapolis and kent island. bwi marshall officially picked up only 2/100ths of an inch of snow. the most i could find really around the southern portions of

carroll county, as much as 2 inches of new, wet snow. 49, 30 today. the average now is just up 1 degree. low, record 70. in 1990. and 1979. 2 about low -- below very. right now, a light wind. more of a southwest wind. very light air tomorrow. probably get into the low 50s. then a cold front. you can kind of see the division right here. 37, 21. 24/10. this cold air is going to make a run for the east coast. it will be with us, particularly sunday and monday of this coming weekend. but we have, along that front, expected to see an area of low pressure to develop. right now, an area of low pressure passing through. warm air ahead of it. tomorrow, a mild day. and as that front approaches, it's going to form, we think, low pressure somewhere along the carolina coast. that will kick back some moisture. it may just be cold enough for a while on saturday morning, for a bit of snow in the region. could even see a little more to the south and east of us.
