the horror stories. >> after days of bad conditions carnival triumph passengers are back on dry land. >> and talking about their or deals. good afternoon. i'm don scott. >> i'm jessica kartalija. here's what people are talking about today. 4,200 people an board the carnival triumph are happy to be back on dry land. randall pinkston reports for wjz from mobile, alabama. >> tug boats towed the carnival triumph to a shipyard in the port of mobile. a team of engineers and investigators are looking into the cause of the engine room fire and the extent of the damage. it's unclear whether repairs and clean up will be done. thousands of passengers erupted into tears as

>> after docking last night some passengers boarded buses to texas and louisiana. a bus headed for new orleans broke down. >> carnival has canceled the triumph's next 12 cruises and the company now admits that ship had mechanical problems weeks before the engine fire. we're enjoying another day of warm weather weather. the sun is up shaping up to be a beautiful afternoon. is some snow on the way? wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. marty and tim williams are updating conditions. >> there's another system headed our way. we'll talk bt -- about it here in just a few moments. a little system of development is going to set up shop offshore and then it will make its way

up. marty will talk about that in a few moments. let's talk about the temperatures. forever in our brains when we see 52 we will talk about it being a ray lewis forecast. 52 degrees right now 48 in ocean city, 36 in oakland. when you see ray lewis forecast, you usually see no winter coats. for more on that afternoon out to marty bass. >> reporter: thank you very much. good afternoon. it is just absolute ly gorgeous here in the out back. clear skies barely a breeze. out in the sun, magnificent. we have basically a late october sun. that's how high it is in the sky right now. enjoy it while we have it. it's getting ready to change. not only is a cold front coming through but we know from long island through new england they're going to get blistered again. the question is tomorrow afternoon does it throw enough moisture in here to give us a snowfall? that may happen.

let's take a look at the national temperature map. notice that cold pool of air that's going to be ushered in by the frontal passage tonight. cold air will be in place for well over 12 or 14 hours by the time that low gets in the coast and starts hitting us with moisture. i don't think we're looking at snow mageden but maybe a couple hours of light snowfall tomorrow afternoon. tim williams with more details shortly. >> thank you. hundreds are injury ed after a meteorite falls from the sky in russia. there's some incredible video showing the meteorite sailing across the sky. it left more than 400 people injured mostly from broken glass. at least three people are hospitalized in serious condition. the meteorite is leading some to question if it's related to a asteroid headed

towards asteroid. scientists say it isn't. nasa says there's no chance of impact from it. the asteroid is said to be about the size of an olympic swimming pool and is projected to come 17,000 from the earth that makes it the closest encounter since scientists began monitoring asteroids 15 years ago. oscar pistorius is formally charged with murder of his model girlfriend. he broke down in court this morning as the charges were read. prosecutors said they will pursue a charge of premeditated murder. investigators have offered no motive for the alleged killing. pistorius's next court hearing is set for tuesday. we're learning more about the tragic moments that led to a police recruit getting shot in the head during training. wjz stays on the story this noon with mike hellgren. >> the investigation is underway at this hour no

charges have been filed the officer who was injured remains in critical condition. >> police identified the baltimore city training officer involved in an incident at the old rosewood hospital site and severe ri injured another officer as william scott kern. more than a dozen trainees were at the facility at the time with two baltimore city training officers. those sources say after a lunch break officer kern resumed training without his fellow instructor, which could be a violation of police policy. both instructors are supposed to check for service weaponing during training. officer kern mistook his service gun for a training weapon, according to those sources and fired the shot that hit the trainee. a criminal investigation is under way. the results will be forwarded to the state's toesh. -- attorney. >> because the shooting occurred in any jurisdiction, we will sit back and wait for the investigation to be completed

and once that is done we will review it and determine what, if any charges, need to be brought. >> the police commissioner shut down training and suspended six people. >> i was surprised that as i understand it six people were susquehanna penlded that quickly. now, under maryland law they would have to be suspended with pay because they have not been charged with a felony. >> state police say the investigation will take several weeks to complete. mike hellgren wjz eyewitness news. >> stay with wjz and cbsbaltimore.com for the latest on this constantly developing investigation. the teen fatally stabbed is -- after the ravens parade is laid to rest today. two other teens were also injured. smith's funeral is being held on saint paul street. the search continues to find a suspect. grammy nominated d rapper 2,

chinz. they charged him with position of marijuana following a traffic stop late night night. he tweeted this photo with two state troopers saying, quote they locked me up, they wanted pictures shaking my head. police are reviewing the circumstances surrounding that photo. he was released on citation. ray rice responds to an impersonator setting up a fake facebook profile using his name. his publicist said they were sending messages to women and girls and asking for face-to-face meeting. the fab page has been taken down. rice said he hopes it will make parents talk to their kids about online safety. high honors, the president recognizes those killed in the newtown shooting. details are coming up.

temperature. keep in mind we are half way through february right now. we are now as the updated numbers have come in at 56 degrees. we are almost near 60 degrees. we still have a few hours to go before the height of the temperature for the day. the southwest wind is taking us up. we have a good bit of sunshine out there. we could hit 60 degrees. 36 oakland 48 elkin 48 on the shore 56 columbia, 46 annapolis and kent island. winds coming in from the southwest, a bit of a variable direction around the rest of the state. we have a northwest wind in oak land, southwest in elkin. you get the idea. the winds are not a real factor. they will pick up tomorrow as this storm starts to develop and move up the coast. as marty talked about earlier, we're watching a development of a storm system. you start to see. so of this -- see some

solve this disturbance move in. snow up in the top portion of it rain back and a mix. it's expected to head towards the coastline. it's expected to strengthen and make its way up towards new england and new york. winds will pick up. we don't rebound very nicely like we have over these last few days. we get these blasts and then the temperatures go back up into the 50s. we'll stay on the cold side for the weekend. we will still see some snow through the day tomorrow. not talking about major accumulations. another one of these disturbances that's going to cause maybe a little bit of a slow down in your plans for your saturday. 10:28 your next high tide and sunset just after about 5:00. 56 degrees today. well, we're already there . i guess we almost have that bump that. 34 tonight. 40 tomorrow. almost 60 degrees in february. >> it's beautiful

in today's wjz health watch a new study said alcohol causes 20,000 deaths a year. they say breast cancer was the most attributed cancer for women. having one and a half drinks of each day accounts for all 30% of all cancer related deaths. a combination of drugs is showing promise in fights brain cancer. pairing avascan with the pair of another drug will stop the spread of tumors. be sure to check in with wjz eyewitness news today at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. we'll have more pictures and stories from passengers on the carnival
