caotic scene. a large meteorite slams into russia. triggering a sonic blast and injuring more than 1,000 people. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. the meteor hit with the force of an atomic blast. you heard the sound. in fact, that noise in the fiery contrail had some people panicking, thinking it was the end of the world. edward lawrence reports with more on hundreds injured. >> reporter: the meteor exploded over a small russian town and caused a shock wave. glass shattered, injuring hundreds of people. this woman went to the hospital with a bloody arm. other his cuts on their faces and heads. the explosion rocked a mountain range, about 900 miles east of moscow.

cameras throughout the area, caught the meteor, as it streaked across the sky. >> reporter: scientists say it was the size of a large bus. and it was twafling -- traveling 33 miles per hour. the meteor came without warning, stunning a canadian hockey player, now living in russia. >> i hear this loud bang. kind of in a 24-story building. i'm on the 23rd floor. and i look up and all of a sudden, the lights are shaking and i hear car alarms going off. it was just incredible. >> reporter: a zinc factory was badly damaged. the roof and wall collapsed. meteor logical impacts of this sort of rare. >> these happen once every few decades. >> reporter: there is another expected to to -- to pass later today. >> that is absolutely frightening. fortunately, no deaths were reported. we have breaking news in

west baltimore, where a police chase has ended in a crash. let's request to -- go to captain jeff long in sky eye chopper 13. >> reporter: more than a few police cars here. this is where the car came to a stop against the side of this building. this started out as a stabbing, which was associated with an attempted robbery at the arundel millsshipping center and anne arundel county. they put out a bulletin on the description of the char. -- car. and the maryland state police located the car, northbound on 95. chased it into the city. and this is where it ended up. on the ground, we've got maryland state police. we've got baltimore city police, baltimore sheriff. and there's even a police car down there from coppin state university. this is on fulton, just south of north avenue. the entire block is shut down while they investigate. now, nobody was injured. but we do know that there at least one male suspect in custody at this time.

reporting live from sky eye chopper 13. i'm captain jeff long. back to you. >> all right, captain jeff. thank you. it is a gorgeous day outside. it certainly doesn't feel like mid-february. but don't get too excited. public works is getting plows ready in case of an accumulating snowfall. right now, it's sunny and mild, but clouds will roll in. where is the storm? and what impact will it have on maryland? meteorologist tim williams is tracking first doppler radar. we've had practice with these types of storms. about every three days, we're getting another one. and each is like the day before. take a look at radar. you see a lot of moisture across the region. because weave had such dry air in place, the dew points have been so dry. what you're seeing moving across parts of maryland now, most of that not making it to the ground. but we will start to see the atmosphere moisten a little bit. as the storm makes its way to the coast. and it should intensify as it does. in the meantime, we have been up around 60 degrees in central

maryland, which means the roads are going to be very warm. it will take a little bit for anything to really accumulate. the storm will move toward the coast and then intensify as it starts to make its way up toward the northeast. what it will do in the process is start to pull down cold air. so in the latter portion of the evening tonight, into tonight and tomorrow morning, we'll start to see more cold air filtering in and that will be the beginning of the wintry mix that we're talking about. we'll talk more about how this plays out coming up in the complete first warning forecast. kai? >> for weather watches and warnings, and your updated forecast, log onto cbsbaltimore.com any time. the odyssey on board the carnival triumph is finally over. and we're hearing firsthand from passengers about their misadvantages at sea. randall pinkston reports for wjz, from the point of -- port of mobile, alabama. >> reporter: tugboats haul the broken down carnival triumph. the u.s. coast guard and

national transportation safety board are investigating the cause of the engine fire aboard the ship and the extent of the damage. triumph may be moved to the bahamas for cleanup and repairs because it's registered there. >> it's almost like coming back to the scene of the crime. >> reporter: after getting rest and a hot shower, passenger doreen hiewghtart came to the terminal before heading back to paris, texas. she said enduring the squalor on the ship was life changing. >> made us appreciate what we have. electricity, running toilets, running water. >> reporter: after the ship finally docked last night, passengers were finally bused to louisiana and texas. many took charter flights home. some are complaining that carnival's response to the emergency was slow and inadequate. but triumph's on-board crewmembers are getting high prize. -- praise. >> they had to walk around with rubber gloves, gas masks, and pick up all of these potty bags. >> they always had a smile on their famous. they helped you, no matter

what. >> reporter: one thing apparentlies disagree on is whether to take up carnival's offer for a discounted cruise in the future. >> are you ready to do it again? >> yes. because certainly lightning can't strike twice. >> they can keep their offer. or i'll take it and frame it. jews >> reporter: because of the damage, carnival has canceled triumph's next 12 voyages. >> carnival admits the ship had mechanical problems weeks before the engine fire. new at 4:00, fresh concerns surrounding the shooting of an officer during a training exercise. gigi barnett is in the newsroom with the investigation. >> baltimore city police were involved in the training. the fraternal order of police now says it's concerned that the facility was not fully staffed at the time the officer was shot in the forehead. the shooting happened on tuesday, at the old rosewood psychiatric hospital in owings mills. sources close to wjz tell us that instructor william scott

kern mistook his service weapon for a similar weapon and fired, hitting that trainee right in the forehead. he was only one of two instructors at the time. and schwartz says there should have been at least four officers supervising that training. meanwhile, state police are conducting what they are calling a criminal investigation. they say it will take several weeks to complete. kai, back to you. >> gigi, thank you. new at 5:00 and 6:00, wjz investigator, mike hellgren, speaks to city councilmembers about their concerns and a lieutenant who worked with officer kern, shea shares his insights. prosecutors charge olympian oscar pistorious with murder. the man who once inspired the world could soon spend the rest of his life in prison. >> reporter: oscar pistorious held his head in his hands and sobbed, as prosecutors accused him of the premeditated murder of his girlfriend. the 26-year-old pair olympic superstar is charged with

killing model reeva steencamp. prosecutors say he shot his girlfriend in the early morning hours of valentine's day, in a possible domestic dispute. family members issued a statement, insisting the world- famous sprinter is not guilty of murder. they wrote, oscar pistorious has made history, as an olympic and pair olympic sportsman and has been an inspiration to others the world over. he would like to send his deepest sympathies to the family of reeva. police say he shot her four times in the head and upper body. local media reported gunshots blasted through a bathroom door. the shooting is making headlines around the world. the sprinter was nicknamed "blade run i" for his prosthetic running blades. one of his hobbies was target shooting. a writer for the new york times magazine, got a surprising invitation, while interviewing

pistorious last year. >> we got -- went to the firing range and shot his semi automatic pistol. >> reporter: police say they recovered a 9-millimeter pistol. pistorious will remain in custody and is due back in court next tuesday. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news. >> a hearing -- bail hearing is scheduled for him next week. but police are expected to reject that request. grammy hoff nominated rapper two chains gets his way to perform on the eastern shore. and while he is in state custody of police, this picture is taken of him and two troopers. he is charged with possession of marijuana and partner, following a traffic stop, late last night. epips claims the drugs were not his. state police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this photo. he was released and went on to go to his performance. august 2011 earthquake. and the first step is to

install scaffolding along the monument. a massachusetts firm is under contract to do roughly $9.2 billion to the place that cracked after the 2011 tremor. $15 million, part of which will be covered by philanthropist, david rubenstein. let's get a look at traffic control with kristy breslin. things moving very slowly, along northbound 95 in a couple of different spots. the first, approaching 32, past 100. then it slows down again from russell street to the beltway on the northeast corner. as far as the beltway itself goes, it's just crawling along on the top side inner loop, over to perring parkway. west side inner loop, unfortunately, not doing much better. average speed, about 30 miles an hour. as far as your accidents go, northbound 895, an accident there at the tunnel, blocking one lane.

65 degrees and mostly sunny in central maryland. complete first warning forecast is coming up. minutes ago, jesse jackson, jr., congressman, is officially charged with stealing $3 million from his campaign fund. they say he used the money for a rolex watch and home renovations. jackson's wife and former campaign manager and treasurer is charged with filing false joint tax returns. a milwaukee family is thanking charlie sheen for his generosity. the actor wired $10,000 for a therapy dog. 15-year-old tegan marty y will use that dog for injuries she suffered when shy plummeted 100 feet. marty suffered brain, spine, pelvis and internal injuries when nets and air bags that were supposed to catch riders on the freefall ride were not

raised. can wall street end the week on a high note? dow gains a little ground in the last hour of trading. dow was up 8. s&p down 2. nasdaq off 7. let's go to new york, where alison harmelin has tonight's cbs money watch update. americans appear to be feeling better about the economy. a new report shows, consumer sentiment rose in february. analysts say recent improvements in the housing market are giving people a little more confidence in the country's economic health. u.s. manufacturers are seeing a slight drop in business. factory production fell in january, especially at the automakers. it believes the drop is only temporary because auto sales are on the rise. there are reports federal regulators are looking into a deal by warren buffett and others to buy the heinz company. the securities and exchange commission is reportedly investigating unusual trading surrounding the deal. the fcc is not commenting.

life is full of pain and pleasure. we have pleasure today. but we'll get some pain tomorrow. >> or as you said yesterday, one of those weather bugs. >> a weather bug. so i guess this would qualify, what's coming, as a weather bug. >> qualify as a weather bug. it will come through, as you mentioned, in about a 24-hour period. and kind of moves on out. >> right. >> well, another one of those weather bugs is under way. the bug we got today, though, it was equally as unique. almost 60 degrees. we're now down to 55. but just at our first check at this hour, we were at just around 58 degrees. we have been up near 60 degrees here midway through february. and it is just incredible that we had these turns. 50s and then snow. and we are in the throes of another one of these abrupt changes, as kai mentioned. 55 now at bwi marshall. 36, your dew point. east wind at 7 miles per hour. 29.91. we've seen the barometer drop here as we have this approaching low pressure moving on in. 30 degrees in oakland.

41 in cumberland. 50 in ocean city. we have 59 in easton currently. then a lot of low to mid-50s around the region. 55 in columbia. 59 in the nation's capital, 51 in annapolis and on kent island. winds have been pretty light through the day. there are a few little anomalies we'll call them. 16-mile-per-hour winds in hagerstown. 13-mile-per-hour winds in hagerstown. tomorrow, the system will pick up. as the system moves on into the coastline, start toss develop and strength -- starts to develop and strengthen. but for right now, winds are pretty calm. we have moderate temperatures. 60 in atlanta. cold air is back up near the great lakes. you see it's up around freezing in detroit. 30 in chicago. that is the cold air that this low-pressure system is going to start tapping into, later in the day tomorrow. roads are warm. air is warm and pretty dry right now. but as the system starts to move in closer. you see it just kind of

clipping the lower portion of ohio. we're starting to see the colder air filtering in. tonight, the clouds will increase. we'll start to we see with this warm air, rain coming down late tonight. as the system starts to move through in the coldest time of tonight, you see, it hits the coastline and starts to strengthen. it will start to kick back some moisture, back into that cold air. and later -- really all day tomorrow, at any given time, we could start to see snow showers. but then a blast of snow before it starts to move out. again, that will be in the coldest time for tomorrow. and temperatures don't start to rebound for the weekend. and winds will start to kick in. south winds on the bay at 5 to 10 knots. we'll look for this nice, mild air to stay with us. even overnight lows down into the 30s. we'll call it rain by midnight or so. bit of afternoon snow. but look at the temperatures, still up around 40 degrees. the key is at -- that the the -- the end of the weekend is going to be a chill.

it is 55 degrees, with a mixture of sun and clouds in central maryland right now. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. >> reporter: updating the breaking news from the top of the show. an attempted robbery and stabbing ends with a police pursuit in the city. meghan mccorkell has more on this chaotic scene. >> reporter: you can see, this was the suv that was involved in that pursuit behind me. they are about to tow that car. now, the chase ended here at north fulton and westwood, on the west side. you can see the damage that that suv did. it went right into the side of the building, caused a hole in the building. we're all told this started at arundel mills. investigators say a woman was stabbed in the parking lot there. a lookout went out for a green acura suv. well, state police spotted that vehicle. when they attempted to stop the suv, the driver sped up, kept going, led police on a high-

speed pursuit. witnesses say the driver was driving very erratically, up to 100 miles per hour, according to some witnesses that we've spoken to here in the area, saying that they almost got hit by that suv. it eventually crashed right here at north fulton and westwood. police have apprehended that suspect. we'll continue following this developing story. for now, we're live in west baltimore. i'm meghan mccorkell. wjz eyewitness news. >> and we'll have a live update from the scene new at 5:00, coming up on wjz. dental records now confirm, christopher dorner is the one who died in a mountain cabin, after a fire and shootout with police on tuesday. the ex-officer is wanted in four killings. john blackstone reports for wjz. why money is now an issue. >> reporter: with the police on high alert for a cop killer. and the whole region nervously wondering where the next one might be.

l.a.'s chief of police said a reward would be offered. >> $1 million. this is the largest local reward ever offered, to our knowledge. >> reporter: two days later, dorner was caught in a gun battle after two separate sightings. carol reynold and her husband jim called 911 to report that dorner had tied them up and stolen their car. potentially making them candidates for the money. >> we didn't think about that. >> reporter: another possible candidate, rick. he was carjacked by dorner and reported that immediately to a sheriff's deputy. >> i called him directly. >> he said, what you got rick? and i said, paul, he just took my truck. >> reporter: it may not be who gets the reward but whether anyone does. it may have been offered with a catch. >> the reward is for capture and

conviction. >> does this let them off the hook? >> better public relations for the city to give away this money? >> i think so. i don't think the city should hide behind legalistic terminology. >> reporter: l.a. says there were 20 different groups that agreed to the reward. >> questions still remain about how he died, whether from gunfire, suicide or from the fire inside the cabinet. outside now. there's clouds around. mild, mid-february afternoon. how will things shape up this evening? let's check in with bob turk. >> right now, the road temperatures are in the low 60s. it's going to have to get awfully cold for anything to stick. take a look at radar. there's a batch of shower activity, west of us. but there's also a front that temperatures are dwroppingy -- dropping behind that front.

it will take a while for that cold air to move in. we're at 55 now. 59 in washington. but just about 75 miles west of us, it's down to 39 in hagerstown, with rain. and 30 in oakland. so the cold air will eventually take over. later tonight, some rain showers may mix in. and eventually change to some snowflakes. but tomorrow, during the day, low pressure develops off the east coast. maybe another little round of flurry or light snow in the afternoon or eeping. testimonies pretty much in the 30s tomorrow, compared to near 60 this afternoon. and on sunday, we'll be lucky to get out of the low 30s. so a cold weekend. and yes, some winter headed our way. vic? >> thank you, bob. remember to stfor first warning weather coverage. for updates any time, go to cbsbaltimore.com. a teenager stabbed near the ravens' super bowl celebration, is laid to rest, while his killer remains on the loose. kai has more in the newsroom for more on the search for the suspects. kai? >> police say they have pretty

solid leads. but unfortunately, no arrests have been made at this time. surveillance video caught the final moments of life for deontae smith. it happened on the fifth. several people got into a fight. and smith was strapped several times -- stabbed several times and died. family and friends gathered today to say their frearls. the -- farewells. >> thank you very much, kai. smith's family says the violence among the teenagers must stop. they are asking people to speak up so justice can be served. president obama traveled to chicago this afternoon, where he met with students enrolled in a youth anti-violence program. as tara mergener reports, since the mass shooting in newtown, connecticut, the president has pledged to use has full power. >> president obama wiped away a tear. as they talked about the 6-year- olds killed in the sandy hook elementary school children the.

>> they gave their lives to protect the most precious children in their care. gave all they had for the most helpless and innocent among us. >> reporter: family members accepted the award. this is the second highest honor, the presidential's citizen medal. >> it's a high honor. all i could hope is that if i were in the same situation, that i'd have the courage that she had and that dawn had and that natalie had to run out the door and confront what was going on that day. >> reporter: after the ceremony, the president left the white house for chicago. to rally support for his state of the union proposals, including tighter gun control. >> the head of the national rifle association, wayne lapierre, responded to the president's state of the union address. >> it's not about keeping kids safe at school. that wasn't even mentioned in the president's speech. >> lapierre renewed his call for more armed guards in schools.

and accused the president of politicizing the sandy hook tragedy. at the white house, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. the president is pushing a new ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, as well as universal background checks. the nra opposes all three. a suspected shoplifter is dead and another man is recovering after a head-on crash. it happened thursday near interstate 81 in hagerstown. the suspect stole clothes from the sears center and left a shopping center in a stolen car. they went up a highway access ramp. the suspect hit the suv. that driver is still in the hospital. well, the deadline was today. and 16 people have filed to be the next anne arundel county executive. this is all the result of john leopold's criminal conviction and resignation. >> reporter: surrounded by family, john hammond stepped out of his annapolis home as

snang arundel's acting. a temporary job and he now wants to continue. >> i am now seeking office for county executive to fill the remaining term of mr. leopold. >> reporter: who resigned after a criminal conviction, with still 21 months to go in office. he was working as chief administrative officer when the council named him acting executive. he wants the next 21 minutes to -- >> put the issues of the past couple of years behind us and reinvigorate the county. >> that includes romantic rendezvouses. hammond says he will continue to drive himself in his pickup truck. but others are trying am? if the voters could vote on this, i think i would be very strongly the favorite. so i'm hoping that the council will hear that message. >> reporter: february 21st, the county council will interview all of those who have applied for the job.

[ explosion ] that was the

meteor breaking up. >> there are combinations. some are just rocky materials. some are iron. >> reporter: look to the left. it's estimated that a million russians have cameras in their cars to discourage corrupt traffic cops. that's why there are so many images of this. that streak is 175 miles long. >> they're moving so fast. when they hit the atmosphere. it's like doing a belly flop on the water. it hits and there's friction and they blow up immediately. >> reporter: this one blows up in midair. the meteorite size is not certain. maybe the size of a human, maybe the size of a car. its speed? >> 25 to 30 miles an hour. when they are moving through space, they're traveling. the atmosphere is thin, you might think. but it's like hitting a wall. >> reporter: a wall, producing a huge shock wave. as many as 1,000 people were injured. it's like a giant bomb went off. easy to understand why so many were injured when you look at a surveillance camera from this office. flying glass causes most of the

injuries. >> it's almost like pancakes. it caiptd take the -- can't take the resistance and it explodes. like a sonic boom almost. >> like a frightening morning commute. the power of something so small to affect so many people over a large area. well, there was another meteorite sighting today. but it was only visible from the other side of the earth. >> everyone was worried about that one. >> i'm telling you. straight ahead on eyewitness news at 4:00. a star and actress sentenced for driving drunk. the emotional outburst from the victim's family. feels like spring outside. but it won't last for long. there's snow in your first warning forecast.

there has been an arrest in the ashduction of a philadelphia 5-year-old girl. she was taken to school and

found a day later. police say she was raped. there are more people involved in the crime. and john mcdevit reports for wjz. >> 19-year-old christina rutgers left this morning, handcuffed and headed to jail. investigators say ra gusters is seen in this video. ra gusters has been charged with 14 crimes, 11 felonies. including rape, assault and kidnapping. >> she's been in jail for a long, long time. >> ra gusters did not alone. but so far, has not mentioned anything about alleged accomplices. >> more people are responsible for what happened to this girl than just the 19-year-old that was arrested yesterday. so i ask anyone that can hear my voice to call 215-tips. >> ra guster was picked up. three others were also questioned but later released.

investigators say the 5-year- old led them to the house, which is only two blocks away from the school. investigators say the girl told them she was held here and there was a bird inside the house. animal assessment took this macaw out of the house. there was dna found on the t- shirt where she was found the day after the kidnapping that helped investigators crack the case. >> i'm pleased that we made this progress. but i also just want to be cautiously optimistic that this is over. >> reporter: the commissioner says despite her assault and abduction, the 5-year-old victim is very brave. and she was a big help to detectives who relied on her recognition. >> she was subjected to a great deal of trauma. yet she was still able to be a good witness and help us. >> an $80,000 reward is being offered for the arrest and conviction of those involved. over a decade later, new details may be coming out about the murder of washington intern

chandra levy. kai has more on the case. >> reporter: we'll soon get partial transcripts of hearings with the man convicted of murder. a judge will be holding post conviction with ingmar guandique. a prosecutor says, defense lawyers made claims in december, during proceedings that the government doesn't agree w. the hearing were sealed due to undisclosed safety reasons. the redacted transcript the will be available in about a week. >> levy was found dead in 2002. gone teak -- guandiquey has been serving a prison sentence for her murder. a melrose place actor, who starred in "cry baby" has more. >> i wasn't there that weekend. why should i be here? >> reporter: a mother's grief

and a husband's tragedy, as they come face to face, with actress amy locane, convicted of killing helene semen in a drunk driving crash. >> the drunk driving has got to stop. it's got to stop. you cannot do this. >> reporter: seman's family spoke directly to locane, during her sentencing. >> the murderer is not a victim. her kids are not victims. >> reporter: the 41-year-old had three times the legal alcohol limit, when she crashed into semen and her husband as they pulled into her driveway. >> i made a terrible choice. >> reporter: locane also spoke in court, apologizing to semen's family, crying about when she talked about being away from her two little girls. >> i've had to live with my girls abruptly having them taken away from me. i have never experienced this kind of pain. >> i will spend the rest of my life, making sure that people understand the tragic effects of drinking and driving. >> reporter: the judge said he

didn't believe it was locane's first time driving drunk. but instead of giving her the maximum 10 years in prison, he gave her just three. saying it's because she has a sick child with crohn's disease. semen's family burst out in court. >> having a sick child doesn't give you a pass to kill my wife. >> reporter: the prosecution called the sentence shocking, saying that locane has already served two month asks could be in ray halfway house in six months. police in washington state find garbage bags full of mail on a man's car. it literally weighed a ton. the thief took the mail from victims' mailboxes, looking for credit cards and checks. officers believed he used riprinter and scanner to make fake driver's licenses and steal their identities. they say he spent $3,000 under one victim's name. some are claiming a boxing round was a hoax. ray edwards stepped into the ring to fight nicholas capes. the 25-year-old fight was a knockout. fighter was knocked out.

the mid-40s, by the way. 51 in annapolis and kent island by the bay. 49, kent island, westminster. clouds and showers. moving in our direction. we now have east winds here. to the west of us, there's a front here right through the catoctic mountains. they have a west wind bringing that colder air in and some rain activity. there's a front. shower activity. this is all rain. for the most part, this all rain activity, even in portions of pennsylvania, where it's in the mid- to upper 30s. wet snowflakes mixing in some of the highest elevations. west of us, breaks up a little bit. but there's also a little snow out there. second cold front. that has pretty cold air in it. that will be with us over the weekend. behind the front, temperatures, 17 now, minneapolis. middle of the afternoon. 30ux 31. there's just enough cold air coming in behind this system that will chill us down for the weekend. we'll be in the 30s primarily. but what we have on tap tonight. 55-degree temperatures. but we have this front going through the region.

a little area of disturbed weather, causing shower activity. later tonight, as it gets colder, you may see a dusting to maybe as much as an inch on the lawns. north of town, as the cold air moves in. now, during the day tomorrow, this area of low pressure redevelops into an area low that will develop in new england. what may happen later in the day. flurry of activities. most passes well to the east. but certainly, it's going to get colder throughout the entire weekend. slightly warmer by next week. south winds on the bay, becoming northwest at 5 to 10. bay temp, around 39 degrees. so for tonight, look for some rain. and then later on, maybe some snow showers. 34 by morning. so it stays above freezing. and the roads are very warm. we're talking mainly on the trees and lawns once again. windy and colder. and maybe a little afternoon flurry activity. tomorrow's high, 40, dropping into the 20s tomorrow if it does snow a little tomorrow afternoon, it would probably stick at least a little better, by late in the
