nick: freddy i think has to get it onto the green to carry and then digs in and leaves that. david: you want an example of how this grass will stop the clubhead? jim: you saw it there. david: he played it deliberately that way but it came to a dead halt. jim: again on the tee at 18, schwartzel. this will get serious run outright here. galloping down that flatter right side. nick: this man will be in the hunt when we come back at augusta, i promise you. jim: and the northern trust open might be heldford another playoff. a three-man playoff a year ago.

currently three a are tied. more possibilities still to be resolved here. john merrick has pulled out a putter here. nick: i'm surprised at that. david: he's given it a scare so far. nick: but you just risk what the kikuyu grass will do. but you're in control. go on. keep going. easy. jim: that's well played. nick: surprise it ran so straight. david: not lacking in courage. nothing tentative about that. jim: merrick trying to become the second ucla bruin to ever win this tournament. corey pavin actually has won it twice. and was in the field this week.

6:33 pm
probably on the left edge perfect. jim: is it that much david? david: yeah, it will certainly wander to the right. you could hit it firmer if you wanted, i suppose. but right now inside the hole, decent pace. nick: that was a quick read, wasn't it? one quick look. david: yeah, he's had a plan. nick: yeah he's a great green reader. anyway, this to tie. jim: oh! nick: wow. jim: the nervous miss is always left. nick: he's hold some brilliant putts, especially today, all week and you get the one nervy one you really need and the
6:34 pm
stroke failed him. jim: that's always been his calling card, the swedish seve, brilliant on the greens. and now merrick. this to match beljan in the clubhouse at 11 under. there you go. final-round 69 for merrick. two birdies one bobble. on each side. and luke donald finishes out with 74. you thought he was a little quick walking up to attempt that one? nick: they obviously knew what they were doing. i'd even go back to -- that was

pull and would he's been pure on these. you can always look at everything. he played 18 nervous. it was a poor drive, hooked it, lost 40 yards of roll. the second shot shouldn't have gone for it. should have gone anything right. the chip shot you think if you can only get it past the hole a little bit more. so every one had just a smidgen of error to them and he pays the price with five on the card. jim: father of two. john merrick. an 18-month-old and 6 we'd child. -- 6-week-old child. schwartzel needs a birdie to make it a three-way playoff.
6:36 pm
haas would need to hole this. nick: i think he just said i need to hole it. i need a club to get there. jim: he's taking aim, isn't he? what a shot! nick: that's the best shot of the day. jim: he needed a club to get there, though. he came up about six feet short. great effort. nick: we have webb simpson first. jim: he, too, needs to knock it in from here. two back.
6:37 pm
nick: he has an unusual follow-through. always looks like it's late. giving it a little extra everything, right knee right shoulder but again it's a smidgen right. schwartzel had a great little 8-iron down the 16th hole right over the flag. and he's probably got the pursuest swing out on tour right now. >> straight at it. nick: why not? jim: he'd love to have the haas shot right now wouldn't he? nick: i have a feeling he's going to hit a good one. jim: just a wedge.

6:40 pm
will remind you a little bit of what we saw here last year. these two know that there's going to be more golf, merrick and beljan. and a playoff will commence at the 18th. and should it go beyond that, 10 and then if necessary 14. and then rotate right back through 18 again if we have to. the question now, will this be a two-man playoff or three-way as it was a year ago? simpson and haas will both have putts for birdie and if they hole them will finish one out of that playoff. and really the only one that

factors in to who takes home the trophy is this man charl schwartzel. it is a familiar putt for us, isn't it? nick: we've seen this many times over the years. he's got a great angle. he's looking at a very subtle right to lefter. jim: keep coming. >> hope this is another show everybody is watching. mom, hello. gabriel, thank you for the chipper and putter.

mchail gareth, couldn't have done it without your coaching, my man. thank you. jim: charlie a winner just several months back at the disney event. his victory there did not get him into augusta. he can settle that matter if he can win this thing in a playoff. nick: did you have a look, david, at this one? jim: is that true hole -- putt holed just a few moments ago by teater. he made a putt here yesterday at the 18th green did swartle from about this same length. different location, of course. now this to get into the playoff. it will be up to merrick and beljan now. schwartzel had his chances for sure.
6:43 pm
especially at the 17th. nick: his second shot landed two yards short of the green and only clawed its way to one yard short of the green. if he'd just got it on the green, who knows? different story. jim: they're going to make the move back to the tee. down the steps and down the way. bill haas, for a while we thought we might have another repeat winner at riviera. this for birdie. nick: just lost the confidence with the driver on a couple of tee shots going right. jim: finishes one out of the playoff in a tie for third. 73.

from the virginia country club, just down the road. 30 miles away down in long beach is where he plays. it's where his coach jamie mulligan teaches him. a lot of support out there rooting him on. nick: the first priority is he must make it cut. even if he just comes up 20 yards short of the green front right. that is better than obviously not cutting and staying up on that left-hand bank. jim: you stand there and look at your limited options and you look over your left shoulder and see beljan way down there. nick: that doesn't help, you're right. you have to think if he's going to beat me let him make a three, fine. but i have to find a way of hanging on and making four and holding on maybe one more hole. david: it's going to be touch to make it move from left to
