good afternoon. we begin with breaking news in baltimore county. a short time ago a plea in the shooting at perry hall high school on the first day of school. robert gladden pleads guilty to attempted murder and using a firearm in a crime of violence. mary bubala is in the newsroom. >> reporter: good afternoon. gladden is pleading guilty to shooting a mentally disabled classmate on the first day of school. he shot daniel borowy in side a crowded lunchroom last september. gladden pled guilty as part of a deal that will have him serve no more than 40 years in prison. he pled guilty to using a firearm. he is scheduled to be sentenced monday. gladden's attorney claimed the teen brought the loaded shotgun to school to inhim at the -- intimidate bullies and not shot anyone. >> we will have a live update later today during the

newscast. another story wjz is following, baltimore city police wrapped up a briefing on last week's training incident that has a recruit fighting for his life at shock trauma. the commissioner saying there was a breakdown in the system. wjz is on the story live at city police training headquarters. mike hellgren tells us what is happening there. good afternoon, mike. >> reporter: good afternoon, don. good afternoon, everyone. educational and physical fitness training will resume but nothing with firearms. we reported this is not properly supervised. the commissioners said there always needs to be supervision. he said protocols were ignored. >> everyone involved in that chain of command is on suspension at this time. >> reporter: the police commissioner said policies in place to keep officers safe during training were not followed leading to a trainee getting shot in the head during an exercise last week. >> we had a major procedural breakdown in our system and we are moving quickly to correct

those to ensure that our employees are safe. we will do a comprehensive look to look at how we use guns, how we use tasers, how we use expandable batons and not just in training, how we use these weapons in every facet in policing this city as a whole. >> reporter: wjz investigation revealed the training was not properly supervised or staffed and our sources say the officer that pulled the trigger mistook his service weapon for a training weapon. >> this weapon that we carry on our hips, they are not toys. they are not hear for games. they are not here for playtime. we have a serious job and we have tremendous responsibility. >> reporter: maryland state police is leading a criminal investigation while baltimore city police look into the procedural breakdown with jerry rodriguez leading the investigation for the city. >> we will peel back that onion with the goal of never ever having a situation like that

happen here. >> reporter: the trainee that was injured is an officer with the university of baltimore baltimore. commissioner has been to his bedside and doctors say he is progressing better than expected but he has a long road to recovery. mike hellgren, wjz, eyewitness news. don? >> the new director of the training academy says safety is his priority. he says he is a hands on manager and will analyze staffing needs. in baltimore county a triple shooting overnight leaves one person dead and two more hospitalized. the gun violence happening around midnight in the 2100 block of eastern boulevard. there is no word on the names of the people involved or what lead up to the shooting. so far no arrests have been made. a former johns hopkins doctor takes his own life amid an investigation and allegations that he photographed his patients. police say dr. nikita levy

committed suicide. two weeks ago baltimore police served a search warrant and found evidence that he videotaped and took pictures of his patients without their knowledge. police and the hospital are working to identify the woman affected -- women affected. wjz is closely following this investigation. we will have a live update today at 5:00 and 6:00. in south africa, olympian oscar pistorius returns to court today saying he had no intention of killing his girlfriend. as tina krause reports for wjz he shed tears at a bail hearing and prosecutors begin to lay out the murder case against him. >> reporter: paralympic sprinter oscar pistorius made a quick exit from court in south africa's capital. his relatives hugged each other for support after prosecutors described pistorius as a cold blooded killer. the track star known as the blade runner for his prosthetic leg said he shot reeva

steenkamp because he thought she was a robber. during a closed court hearing pistorius cried. he felt vulnerable when he fired the fatal shots because he was not wearing his artificial legs. prosecutors say the athlete put on his prosthetics and walked across the room on a mission to kill his girlfriend after a heated valentine's day argument. they say pistorius pumped four bullets into a locked bathroom door where steenkamp was hiding. family members of the super model and law graduate held her funeral tuesday in the south african city of port elizabeth. pistorius says he was deeply in loved with steenkamp and filled with horror and fear when he realized she was not in his bed and he shot her. the runner said he mashed in the bathroom door with a cricket bat and discovered her body. he told police she died in his arms. he kept a 9-millimeter pistol under his bed because he

received death threats. his family insists that the track star is not a killer but a sportsman that acted on instinct. tina krause, wjz, eyewitness news. >> he will northbound custody until tomorrow when the bail hearing will resume. if convicted of premeditated murder he could be sentenced to life in prison. we want to update the breaking news at this hour. the plea at the start of the perry hall shooter trial. wjz is live there now. rochelle ritchie is out of the courtroom with more on the plea from robert gladden. good afternoon. >> reporter: the guilty plea coming down before 11:00 this morning. robert gladden junior entering the plea in towson. you remember that gladden is responsible for the perry hall high school shooting on the first day of school that seriously injured 17-year-old daniel borowy and sent him through many, many surgeries. gladden was in the courtroom as

well as members of his family who were very emotional. the prosecutor in this case, john cox tells us that he will ask for a life sentence in the sentencing that comes february 25th, next monday. don, back to you. >> wjz will have much more on the plea bargain today on wjz's eyewitness news at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. the president is calling on congress to take action and avoid a doomsday scenario budget cutting spree. the president wrapped up a news conference a little while ago calling on both parties to reach a budget deal soon. the cuts would drain $85 billion from the government's budget hindering military readiness and leading to massive layoffs. the president says the cuts weren't supposed to happen and were put in place to scare both sides into returning to the negotiating table. from capitol hill to federal hill it has been a wet

it's raining and 3 degrees. we are learning more about the shooting at a school in connecticut. adam lanza was comparing himself to the norwegian man that killed 77 people during a shooting and bombing spree in 2011. like lanza, most of his targets were unarmed children. he wanted to top the death toll in norway and he picked sandy

hook elementary because it was an easy, well populated target. in texas, a toddler is mauled by a pit bull. relatives say isaiah gonzalez was chasing a balloon when he squeezed through a hole into his neighbor's backyard. neighbors say it was difficult to pull the animal off the boy and the owner did not do anything to help. >> he was at the door. he looked out the door and my baby was laying in front of his door. he shook his head no and shut the door. >> isaiah was rushed to a hospital where he later died. no word whether the dog's owner will face charges. in belgium, police are looking for the people behind a diamond heist early this morning. investigators say the man apparently broke through an airport security fence and then held up a plane as the diamonds were being loaded on to it. the entire heist took plea

minutes. the thieves escaped with about $468 million worth of stones. police say they found the getaway vehicle torched nearby. so no arrests have been made. researchers and curious residents are gathering in west virginia for the annual sasquatch seminar. more than 100 people attended the event where they traded stories and video as well. they show off casts of footprints that they believe belong to sasquatch. they only attract -- attract legitimate scientists that believe in big foot. the forecast is 2 1/2 minutes away. let's take a look at the midday stocks to be followed by the multimatch numbers.

welcome back. the rain has arrived. where you see some of the yellow there is sleet mixing in. when it first came in there was snow out there. for the most part this will be in the form of rain. we will take you through a little sunshine earlier today then the clouds took over and it has turned dark outside. just to our south there is much warmer air magging a push. temperature-wise we are getting close to 50 across the south. still 39 in baltimore. when all of that rain started to come down the temperature

dropped from the 40s but it will rise through the afternoon through the 40s once again. it's the southerly wind bringing the push of warmer air for now. by tomorrow, we will wrap up the storm system. it will get out of here and on the northwest side of it, the winds will turn around and bring in another round of cold air. look at the pockets mixing, borderline storm for a lot of people. when this gets out of here, we will see shine returning. a windy colder day tomorrow. then more sunshine on thursday. a bit of a breeze at times before the next storm moves our way. that will be strong and come through friday into saturday. we may even see a wintry mix with rain once again. the forecast is like this today. getting up to about 47 for the high. the winds picking up this afternoon. tonight a breezy night with the rain ending. 29 for the low. tomorrow 39 for the high. colder day tomorrow with gusty winds making it feel like it's in the 20s. sunshine returns after a gray afternoon. >> i can live with that.
