fired on the las vegas strip. >> the fiery crash with at least three people dead. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. >> it sounds like a plot to an action film. three people are dead in las vegas, following a shooting and a multicar crash. misare searching for a luxury suv that raced away from the scene. >> reporter: these are the smashed-up remains after a deadly shooting on the las vegas strip. police say a suspect in a black range rover opened fire at a stoplight. the apparent target was this maserati. bullet holes are visible from the windshield. it crashed and ignited a fireball. >> the maserati traveled through what we believe was a red light, at a high rate of speed, striking serl vehicles. one of those vehicles was a local cab that also caught on fire as a result of the impact. >> reporter: guests in the

nearby casinos heard the impact. >> there was a loud boom. and then i heard two other booms. and i looked out my window, up here in caesar's palace. i could see the fire ball, over here on the kosher. -- corner. >> reporter: the driver of the maserati was killed, along with the driver and the driver. taxicab. police are still searching for evidence. they believe the shooting may have followed an rememberer confrontation at one of the hotels. they are searching for leads. edward lawrence, wjz eyewitness news. >> and this incident marks the latest violence on the strip since the beginning of the year. two people were critically wounded in a parking lot shooting. and a tourist was stabbed in an elevator at the hotel and mandalay bay. new details today in the case of a johns hopkins doctor, who committed suicide after being caught videotaping his patients. vic is in the newsroom with

what the coroner and police are saying. >> reporter: according to our media partner, the baltimore sun, dr. niceelty levy left his wife a note of apology before taking his own life. police say that levy went to the basement of his town home and put a plastic bag over his head and fill today with helium. dr. levy was fired from johns hopkins on february 8th, when hidden cameras found at johns hopkins east medical center. he committed suicide earlier this week. so far, more than 300 possible victims are in touch with city police. kai, back to you. >> vic, thank you. through at 5:00, wjz talks to patients about what it was like inside dr. levy's examination rooms. justice after six years. today, anastasia luche pleads guilty to beating john taylor inside his home in may 2007. taylor's daughter hired her to

care for her father. she hid cameras in his room when she saw bruises on his body. aluche was arrested, made bail and fled to her native country. he was returned and got six years in prison. chief dect in the pistorius case was pulled off because he is also facing murder charges. >> reporter: former olympian oscar pistorius looked down for day 3 of his bail hearing. in a startling move, police are taking off the chief investigator of the case because he himself is facing attempted murder charges. >> a team of highly skilled and experienced detectives, they shall continue with this investigation. >> reporter: hilton bota is accused of being drunk, when he

allegedly opened fire on a minivan full of passengers in 2011. the clarnls were withdrawn but reinstated earlier this month. 10 days before pistorius fatally shot his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp at his home. prosecutors say the double- amputee, known as the blade runner, for his prosthetic racing legs, intended to fire at his girlfriend. pistorius claims he thought she was an intruder. the victim's best friend said steenkamp cared passionately about ending domestic violence. >> the next day, she was going to talk to women about abuse. >> pistorius faces life in prison if convicted of murder. >> reporter: a decision on bail is expected tomorrow when the hearing continues. the trial isn't expected for several months. >> maryland state police are investigating a fatal accident on the inner loop of 695 this

morning. derek thomas was changing his tire on the shoulder of 695, near the whitemarsh boulevard exit in carne. a tractor-trailer drifted off the road and struck thomas. thomas died at the scene. a 17-year-old and baby were inside the car. the baby was ejected. both are being treated. it is unclear at this time if the truck driver was hurt. the house unanimously votes to overturn a measure, ruling pit bulls inherently dangerous. the court held pit bull owners and landlords liable, without previous evidence, the dog was dangerous. it now goes to the senate. vanita -- vinita nair reports, 13 people are -- states are under winter storm

or advisory. >> reporter: a massive storm across the midwest. >> reporter: cars slid right off the road. >> i just heard another call, looking for a wrecker to pull somebody in. and they're talking five-hour delay to get a wrecker. >> reporter: parts of the state are buried under more than a foot of snow. a wrestling team that was headed to a state tournament, got stuck in their hotel. >> it's been like extremely boring. like there was almost nothing to do. >> reporter: there were nearly whiteout conditions in kansas city. the airport and state offices were shut down. people were urged to stay off the road. but that didn't stop the drivers from braving the storm in wichita. >> the massive storm barreled east from colorado, where even suvs were skidding out. that same system brought snow to amarillo, texas. arkansas was coated in ice and sleet, causing power outages. a car in springfield, missouri, flipped in the icy conditions. thunder and lightning were also

little more comfortable. but still cold. in perspective, our average high now is 36 degrees. it is moving through. a good portion of it is going to move up to the north and northeast, up toward milwaukee. up toward the upper peninsula. the bottom portion is going to move in our general direction. we'll start to see it. clouds will increase. and we'll see a bit of a wintry mix. we'll talk about the timing and how it will impact us going into saturday. >> let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. hi, kristy. >> hi, kai. hi, everyone. if you are in the forest hill area, we do have a serious accident there. it is actually at route that is closed between graften shop road and 24. the accident involves a horse trailer. we have animal control on the scene. and a third medivac that has just been requested. avoid that area, and take west jarrettsville road instead. an accident at falls road, block the two right-hand lanes.

center street, a home they haven't lived in since sandy. >> reporter: hank tells us, his father is helping them cover the cost so they don't have to wait for insurance and aid. >> there's no word toss describe it. i can't even -- there's no words. i am very lucky. >> reporter: first, workers got out their shovels to dig around the foundation. they soon traded them for sledgehammers to knock out some bricks. then the dirty job under the house started. they had to dig out enough space to put up these wood supports. sean and heather took off from school to witness this milestone. they can't wait to leave their rental and come back home. >> i don't know. it's just like the only place i can really get comfortable. and actually enjoy it. >> reporter: once the wooden beams were up in groupings, these metal jacks were connected to them. then six hours or so into the job, workers slid these long, steel beams underneath. a very labor-intensive process.

more than 555,000 struggling homeowners received some form of mortgage relief last year after a landmark settlement with five major banks. the banks agreed to reduce balances on mortgages where the borrower owes more than the homes are worth. the bank say they cut it by $19 billion. that's about $83,000 per homeowner. carnival criewtzs face another lawsuit, following the engine fire that stranded the cruise ship triumph for days in the gulf of mexico. an oklahoma couple has filed a class-action lawsuit that seeks to represent the more than 3, 000 passengers on the ship. carnival says it won't comment on the lawsuit. google's new chrome book pixel laptop went on sale at its store today. it includes a 13-inch display screen that responds to touch or the swipe of a finger. it is expected to go head to head with computers running

so one advancement is the biopsy. when we're evaluating the lymph nodes instead of a full node. radiation oncology, the standard in treatment have usually been something, we call whole breast radiation. that takes 6 to 7 weeks, typically. but some women will qualify for what they call partial breast radiation. which is partial treatment for five days then you're done. >> thank you for being here. finally, something preventively women can do. >> three changes, exercising on a daily basis, we know, reduces the risk of breast cancer. obesity can be associated with increased risk of breast cancer. so avoid obesity. and alcohol intake has been linked to many cancers. the key is to avoid alcohol or definitely in moderation. >> thank you so much for being

weather event. and even though we had one in the wing, it is not going to be a major winter event heading into the weekend. so we're still counting it down if you will. 38% relative humidity. 30.15, your barometer reading. around the state, 19 cold degrees in oakland. 37 in elkton. around the immediate metro. 37 in bel air. 40 degrees down in the nation's capital. this wind coming in from the northwest, tapping into very cold air. in the double digits has taken about 10 degrees off of our actual temperature. the way it feels on your skin. 38 feels like 28. that cold air is not far away. we have 38 here. well below our average. 26 in detroit. 29 in chicago. that is the direction that this system that is now across the midwest is lifting. the top portion of it, you see all the snow has really been causing problems up toward missouri, over toward kansas city. and that portion is lifting up to the upper peninsula of michigan and back to wisconsin.

office conducted an autopsy but refused to release the findings, even to his family. in prince george's county, the cause of an early-morning blaze that killed a man and his two children is under investigation. the blaze broke out inside this home in glennarden. around 4:00 a.m. a woman and an 8-year-old were able to escape. firefighters rescued the man and the three girls, ages 5, 8, and 10. em ts revived one of the children. the other the were pronounced dead at the hospital. fire officials say there were no working smoke alarms in the house. charged in connection with a deadly salmonella outbreak. they filed fraud and conspiracy charges. food and drug administration says the company knowingly shipped salmonella tainted peanut products. it killed nine people and affected 700. the peanut corporation is no longer in business.

from today. tonight, council will vote on a replacement for john leopold, who resigned after being convicted of office. six competed, including john hammond who has been acting executive and former first lady of maryland kendall ehrlich. according to the release by college board, they ranked fourth in the nation for their placement on ap exam. more encouraging news, more african american students in maryland passed the exams in 2012 than ever before. well, a seasonably cool february afternoon in our area. let's take a live look outside. we're seeing sunshine. mostly clear skies. wjz has weather and traffic together. and bob turk is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. bob? >> well, it was a little warmer today than yesterday. but still pretty chilly. running still below normal. look at temperatures now.

38 degrees. 40 in d.c. and pax river. but only 21 in oakland. and with the breeze still out there, feels more like 29 degrees. so it's been pretty much below freezing pretty much all day long. it's only 10, the way it feels on your skin in oakland. we have big storm we have been telling you about, primarily is headed up towards the graibs. we'll see that moisture in our region, a lot less than what they're having. but we'll talk about it in a few minutes. okay, bob. let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, vic. hi, everyone. well, let's give you an update on the situation in forest hill. we have a very serious accident there. route 23. grafton and 24. what we had there was a horse carrier and an oil delivery truck. obviously you can see it was a pretty bad collision. a couple of medivacs were requested. we're still waiting to find out what the results on that are and how many injuries there

were. right now, the best way to get around that is to take west jarrett'sville road. as far as the rest of the region, we have 33rd at alameda. also, watch out for an accident in the glen burnie area. as far as delays go, they continue to build. on the west side inner loop, delays begin at 95. goes all the way over to liberty road. average speed, about 25 miles an hour. and on the top side of the inner loop, some congestion as well. it's from greenspring to harford road. traveling northbound 95. stop and go there, from 32 to route 100. let's take a live look. as you can see, traffic has gotten very heavy there. around greenspring avenue. partly because of the earlier accident at falls road, which is now lingering on the shoulder. this traffic report. bill's has it all for you. you can call them at 1-877-75- bills. back to you. >> well, you see them in costume.

$45,000 from different victims. an investigation is under way to find out what caused an explosion in kansas city, missouri. the blast was caught on tape. and one body was found. adriana diaz has the latest from wjz from new york. >> reporter: fire officials say they found a body in the blackened rubble of a popular kansas city, missouri restaurant. police had not been able to account for at least one jj's employee after an explosion tuesday night. >> we have not yet been able to identify the body of the person found at jj's. >> reporter: crews searched the rubble for additional victims. but the fire department said it is moving forward with the cause and damage assessment part of the investigation. >> we have run down every lead, which we are currently aware of for possible missing persons and have found no more victims at this time. >> they caught the blast on tape. the force shattered windows across the street. flames ripped through the shopping districts just before the dinnertime rush.

witnesses say they smelled gas. fire officials confirmed there was an accident at a construction site about an hour before the blast. >> the subcontractor, harland midwest, was working with a cable company, putting fiber in the area. they hit the line with an underground boring machine. >> reporter: the explosion and fire injured at least 15 people, some critically. adriana diaz, wjz eyewitness news. >> investigators are also looking into whether the contractors working on the site had the proper permits. a small plane crash in georgia, kills five people. and mare sein the nts -- mary is in the ntsb with more. >> the ntsb says the plane flaying from nashville aborted the landing. and hit a 60-foot utility pole before crashing. one of the wings was cut off when it hit the pole. and the leaking fuel, igniting

the fire. five people were killed. two were hurt. survivors are believed to be the pilot and one passenger. five are affiliated with a vein clinic in augusta that also has offices in tennessee. >> it caused power outages in that area. allergen inc. says this has approved a new gel implant. it is for women 22 and older. it is a if i -- firmer implant. the agency banned silicone implants in 1992, fearing they would lead to illnesses. they allowed them back on the market in 2006. the eye lash market, latiss being treated -- tested for treating hair loss. they are also looking into vitamin d to help dormant hair follicles grow again. as many as 80% of men suffer

currently, only 19 degrees in oakland. but it's 40 to the south. 34 in hagerstown. it will get chilly tonight. it will get much, much warmer in the mid- to upper 30s. and we're also going to probably stay above freezing tomorrow night. that's the good news, i guess. 38 in annapolis and kent island. right now, still that breeze. 15. 18 as you can see. a little lighter out to the west. only 8 in oakland. to the north and west of us, marginally cold temperatures. but cold enough here, kansas, oklahoma, denver, chicago. expecting 3 to 6 inches of snow. but south of that, very warm air. that's going to be flowing toward our region. not that warm. but that warm air is going to ride over the cold air. and that's where the precipitation will break out. south of it, shower and thundershower activity to the south. for our region, the bulk of the storm heading way out to the west. but the warm air riding over the cold air. may see a period of light snow. a little sleet. and maybe each a spotty,
