good afternoon. we begin with this hour's breaking news. the trainee who was accidentally shot in the head during the city police academy tactical exercise has been released from the hospital. shock trauma confirming the still unidentified man was released this morning. sources tell wjz he has been transferred to a rehab facility and his progress has been and remains remarkable. maryland state police continue to investigate the incident on the grounds of the old rosewood state hospital. it's the weather making head lines. a huge storm system is working its way towards the northeast this noon after blanketing much of the middle of the country with snow and ice. in chicago snow is still coming down. plows are busy clearing streets.

the storm dumped 14 inches of snow in northern oklahoma 10 inches near kansas city an area of the nation that also had thunder and lightening where the snow was falling. all that of course poses the question, is all or any of that headed this way? a live look outside right now shows it's a mix of sun clouds and cold temperatures. what happens next and what form will it take? wjz is live with complete first warning weather coverage with marty bass in the out back and tim williams in the weather center. good afternoon. >> good afternoon . we'll set the stage for you. we have had this system moving across. it has blocked a lot of its punch as it started to move into dry air. even though you see on our radar some of it makes its way across the region, looking at marty, it's not make ing it to the -- making it to the ground. temperatures are going to go up. what we're going to have as this system makes its way down is a bit of a mix maybe some sleet,

maybe some rain and it's going to move in here this afternoon. we have a winter weather advisory indicating that there's going to be a coating some light accumulation, less than one-tenth of an inch. you see the entire state is not really impacted by this. we have to keep an eye on it as it moves on through. with that said, how is this going to play into our forecast into the weekend? for more on that, out to marty. >> reporter: thank you. good afternoon. just a couple little flakes falling here in the out back. i want to look at two graphics. we talked about this big storm that pounded the midwest. itself is headed to the great lakes. what's going to happen is there's going to be a surface low form right off our shore. our second graphic shows it's right in that nor'easter slot. location is everything when it comes to real estate and weather. it's just going to give us rain between now and

convinced that the version will be proved to be true. >> the announcement came after several days of dramatic testimony about how the runner shot and killed his girlfriend, model reeva steenkemp. defense lawyers say the runner acted on instinct when he thought an intruder was in his home. prosecutors say pistorius intended to kill her in the early hours of valentine's day when he fired four bullets through the door. they argued he had the money means an motive to flee. the judge didn't buy it. >> i can not find that it has been established that the accused is a flight risk. >> the court set bail at $113,000 and ordered pistorius to hand over his guns and passports. the judge orrered him toed -- ordered him to avoid alcohol and

not go to his home. the 26-year-old will be back in court on june 4th. >> pistorius's long time coach said he's considering putting him back in training while he's out on bail to help keep his mind clear. a relative has been sworn in as anne arundel county executive. 48-year-old laura neuman took the oath just a few hours ago. alex demetrick is live. good afternoon alex. >> reporter: well laura neuman was just elected last night by the anne arundel county council. >> laura neuman greeted friends, well wishers and future employees inside the annapolis courthouse. thursday night she was chosen by the county council to be the new county executive beating out a large field of candidates some of whom have far more experience in politics. >> it doesn't hurt she has a record of making changes that are necessary when she feels they need to be made. >> that's because she replaces

hot button issues is headed to the senate. ron matz is in the news room with the latest. >> reporter: the committee voted 7-4 last night in favor of the gun control bill which would prohibit someone from owning a handgun if they have been involuntary committed for mental health reasons. lawmakers also voted 6-5 to approve a bill that would repeal capitol punishment. in the house a bill to legalize marijuana was introduced. it will make legal for adults 21 and other and create a system to regulate it and tax it like alcohol. lawmakers say it's unlikely to pass. >> the gun control measure will go before the full senate for a debate next week. the bill repealing capitol punishment is expected to pass. we have breaking but not unexpected news to tell you about regarding the baltimore ravens. 6 time pro bowl center

matt burk has just announced he's retiring from the nfl. he made the announcement during a ceremony dedicating a community reading center. the 36-year-old has played in the nfl for 15 seasons and of course just won his first super bowl. a $26 million mega millions ticket sold in maryland has been claimed. lottery officials say a grandmother is the winner. the ticket was purchased at a gas station in mount erie where she lives. lottery officials said the woman has decided to remain anonymous and is choosing the cash option and will put in the bank $12 million after taxes. she said she plans to buy a beach house or two. still to come on wjz eyewitness news at noon, a medical helicopter crash a chopper going down in oklahoma. what may have been to blame. >> upping the anti, a look at

it's cloudy and 32 degrees in central maryland. your complete first warning weather forecast is still coming up. authorities in oklahoma are looking into whether the winter storm system moving through that area played a roll in a fatal helicopter crash. police say the pilot and a nurse are both dead. one person was seriously injured and is being treated at a local hospital. the search continues in nevada this noon for the driver of an suv involved in a shooting that set off a fierily re -- fiery crash. police say it started with an argument at a casino and then two vehicles took off with someone in the suv opening fire on the sports car that crashed into the taxi. two people in the cab and the car driver are dead. the black range rover got away. there's another big court hearing today for accused killer george zimmerman. his attorneys will be back in court without

36 south and southeast. 30 westminster, 32 columbia, 35 kent island and in annapolis. we have a bit of an east flow coming in. that's going to help bring in some of that damp air off the bay and off the ocean. it is going to contribute to the cloud cover. our cold temperatures are just right in the general vicinity. this rain is coming in from the west and southwest. warm front lifting into the region is going to help bring our temperatures up. most of this is rain coming in from the south. with that cold air we do get that mix. look how it all breaks up. the advisory is in place because we could have just maybe a tenth of an inch or so of sleet just a little bit of a coating and then it all turns into rain. the temperatures go up into tomorrow. this storm developing off the coastline as marty talked about earlier is headed up to the northeast. we don't get much of that but potentially a half inch of rain out of this. it is mostly a rain event for

this season's flu shot is only protecting people over 65 for the most dangerous part of the flu only 9% of the time. researchers say it's lower than anticipated and aren't sure why the vaccine isn't working as well as expected. for all age groups the vaccine is 56% effective, which is a typical result. you may want to accept that friend request from grandma. social media can give older adults a brain boost. researchers taught a small group of seniors how to use facebook and put them through memory
