to begin voting for a new holy father. after benedict steps down on thursday cardinals can decide to move up the ceremony. >> i think we should get it to as soon as possible. >> i'm surprise d. >> they would like a new pope before easter week, march 24th. keith o'brien will be noticeably absent. he resigned amid allegations he behaved inappropriately with other priests 30 years ago. o'brien denies the acquisitions and says he does not want the allegations to be a distraction. >> the fact that it has been accepted by pope benedict i think is significant. not of guilt, but certainly that we want an investigation to begin. >> some tourists say the new allegations are another blemish for the church.

>> it's sad. very sad. >> i think it's a shame they have to experience that. >> pope benedict also met monday with the elderly cardinals who conducted a probe into the leak of vatican documents. the out going pope has decided the details of that investigation will not be shared with the cardinals or the media ahead of the conclave. >> 115 cardinals will elect the new pope. fans injured by flying car debris during a nascar race crash wants to find out what went wrong. denise is in the news room with more. >> reporter: a 14-year-old boy injured is upgraded from critical to serious condition today. 28 fans were hurt when a multi-car crash on saturday sent debris flying into the crowd. seven remain in the hospital. a man is recovering from surgery and is now in serious condition. the injured were carried away on

stretchers. the owner of the race cart says the engine separated from the car and a tire with the wheel attached flew into the crowd. he said he will work with nascar to develop technology to prevent a similar accident. >> thank you. the track own erer says the catch fence kept the entire car from going into the stands. a baltimore county councilman is speaking out following a drunk driving arrest this weekend. todd huff says, he's giving up his county owned jeep in the first step of accepting the consequences of his behavior. he also a said he made a very poor decision saturday and regrets the pain the arrest is causing his family and friends. he was pulled overer for driving with his lights off and his blood alcohol content was twice the legal limit. after a chilly morning the sun is warming things up. it's sunny with a few clouds and cool. let's go to bernadette. hi, bernadette.

accumulations out west. more coming up. >> thank you. in 4 day s $85 billion in automatic spending cuts kick in across the country. congress is back in town and looking for a deal to avoid these so-called sequester cuts. danielle nottingham reports for wjz. republicans and the white house are not any closer to a compromise. >> president obama sounlded the alarm to governors gather -- sounded the alarm to the governors gathered at the white house about the automatic budget cuts. >> companies are preparing lay off notices. families are preparing to cut back on expenses. the longer these cuts are in place the bigger the impact will become. >> the white house laid out how the cuts will impact each state. in new york 12,000 defense cuts cut, in missouri 1 #2shgs 00 students taken out of head start. president obama is putting the blame on congress. >> these cuts do not have to

happen. congress can turn them off any time with just a little bit of compromise. >> the president urged the governors to take a trip up pennsylvania avenue and talk to the lawmakers from their state about coming together to stop the cuts. >> so far there's no signs a deal will get done before the friday deadline. >> we're saying just get the job done. work with the president, find a way to get it done. if you want, just turn it over to us governors. >> the sticking point is once again taxes. republicans say raising them is off the table. >> it could be an absolute mistake to raise taxes to put more money into the governing economy. >> president obama will continue to rally public support for his position with a road trip to a virginia shipyard tuesday. in washington, danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> lawmakers will also look at the option of delaying the spending cuts which would set up

it's 47 degrees and mostly sunny in central maryland right now. your complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. an his or her -- an ohio man is dead after a accident at a popular ski resort. this is the second want to die on the same slope at wisk this winter. witnesses say he crashed into a tree. police say they were icy conditions on the slope at the time of the crash. more than 4 inches of rain falls on parts of australia. dozens of roads are flooded creating dangerous conditions. a mini bus carrying 16 children was stranded and had to be rescued by boat. more rain is expected today. >> wow. is what you eat making you tired? if you're getting enough sleep and are still tired through out the day you're diet

46. let's go to new york right now where alexis has the money watch update. >> polls show that elections in italy have implications for the global creditors market. triple a says the national average for a gallon of regular is $3.78 down a fraction from friday. that's still up about 44 cents from a month ago. analysts say a 3% drop in crude oil last week should bring some relief at the pump. the national highway traffic safety administration says it will investigate problems with strawing or surging engines in nearly 725,000 ford cars. it includes escape and fuse and mulan sedan from the 2009 from 2011 model

sun yesterday, sun again today, it just goes a long way. >> it does. >> i hope you get a chance to enjoy it because we have clouds coming back in and for the most part they're going to stick around. first up temperature wise today we topped out so far at 47, the average is 47. very close to averages for morning low and afternoon high. it's 47 baltimore, a lot of 40s on this map. a little bit of a breeze out of the north. that is going to turn around to the east and start picking up tomorrow as this storm system moves our way. it's already been a big storm for the front range through the panhandle of texas and through oklahoma. at one point yesterday in oklahoma there was a blizzard warning and severe thunderstorm warnings in the eastern part of the state. that is the storm that's moving in our direction but not at that intensity. you can see this line breaking out with a lot of severe weather in its southern

side. it's going to peak in intensity as it moves through the midwest and parts of the tennessee river valley. as it moving into cold air a it could be a mix but it will change over to rain for most of us. in the mountains, that's a different story. the cold air is going to hang on longer because of that. we have a few advisories to talk about. winter weather advisory in effect for washington and allegany county. it's been upped to a winter storm warning for northern parts of allegany county. here's that storm coming up from the southwest. you can see all of those lines indicating some gusty winds with this storm. on wednesday tries to get out of here but notice how it's disconnected. this is going to take some time. temperatures are really going to jump but the clouds are going to come in and the cold air will barrel in behind it thursday and

from a 2008 accident. the charges were dropped then later reinstated but they did not explain why. blood tests proved he had not been under the influence of alcohol. carl pistorius is due back in court at the end of march. his brother, oscar goes before a judge 2 months later in june for murdering girlfriend, reeva steenkemp. >> after being released on bail friday oscar pistorius said he could like to reach out to steenkemp's family. her father, barry steenkemp said he only wanted to hear one thing from pistorius, the truth. if it didn't happen the way he said it did he must suffer, her father said and he will suffer. only he knows. as a condition of his bail pistorius was ordered not to contact the steenkemps or any potential witnesses. he has to report to a police station twice a week, starting monday. >> and oscar pistorius reported to correctional officers in the

capitol earlier today. his first of many visits while out on bail. a manhunt widens for a 26-year-old ex-convict identified in the prime suspect in a triple homicide. kai has more from the news room. >> police believe omar harris fired shots from a black range rover into a maserati. the driver of the maserati, an aspiring rapper died. the crash and explosion killed two other people in a cab. a swat team didn't find harris at his home after the suv was found saturday in the garage of a gated apartment complex. police say the shooting stemmed from an although lt er an lter indication. >> harris is considered armed and dangerous. afghanistan's president gives u.s. special forces 2 weeks to leave a key battleground. the deadline comes amid acquisitions that afghans working for u.s. troops tortured and killed innocent

everyone in the world wanting to be a part of the healing process. >> 60,000 were sent to newtown. these are just a portion of the thousands of other gifts that were given out. this room just makes up 1/3 of everything mailed in around the world. >> we're thankful for everyone who sent in items. >> other children reflected on the gesture from those outside their town. >> it's pretty special that everyone gave this stuff to us just like for us to be happy. >> i think it's cool that a lot of people donated all this stuff just for us for us to be happy and try to get over it. >> whether they left with crayons, books or a justin bieber doll, the children recognized the true meaning behind the donations. >> i hope they understand and the parents explain to them

some snow north but south of it a lot of shower and thunderstorm activity. mostly rain here in the afternoon could be heavy locally tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening. low pressure out to the west, another will develop across the south. above 1,000 feet there could be sleet and freezing rain. winter weather advisory and even a winter storm watch could see an inch of sleet in garrett county. our part of the world central maryland maybe enough rain to cause minor flooding. we have a flood watch. an inch or more of rain is possible. make sure those gutters and down spots are cleaned out. you might see some water tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow night. could be a couple hours of heavy rain. let's check on the roads with christy breslin at wjz traffic control. >> hi, everyone. major problem so far this afternoon is the accidents. we're deal being a

ikea pulls a batch of traditional meat balls from stores as the horse meat scandal continues to grow. >> ikea is the latest big name brand in the european horse meat scandal. inspectors found horse meat in over 1,600 pounds of meat balls headed to the furniture store restaurants. authorities say they were falsely labeled as beef and pork. they met monday to discuss the crisis. horse meat is now being found in a number of products across europe and in at least a dozen countries. >> we need to deal with the fraudulent labeling, making a

profit on that. >> all over europe inspectors are carrying out dna tests to figure out how widespread the problem is. >> it's here in britain it was first discovered in frozen meat products. it later traced to a complex chain of fliers. >> nestle had to pull its beef off shelves after finding traces of horse dna in them. in britain was grocery store was selling them with as much 25% horse meat. no one knows when it came into the european food chain is how much more of it is yet to be found. the european union is under pressure to find a fast solution as the scandal continues to grow. >> the horse meat is a case of fraudulent labeling but does not pose a health risk. nearly 3 years after a

deadly rig explosion in the gulf triggered the nations worst offshore oil spril a trial begins to assign blame. mary is live in the news room with the latest from new orleans. >> reporter: the trial is to identify the causes of bp's well blow out. months of negotiations did not reach a settlement. bp said it's paid more than $24 billion in spill related expenses and expects to pay $24 billion more. the prosecuting attorney says bp choose speed over safety and the rig owner failed to properly train its crew. >> thank you mary. in december bp pled guilty to manslaughter and paid $4 million in penalties. the captain of the concordia may be indicted on homicide

charges. they want to also charge him with abandoning the ship. the crash killed dozens of people last year. five other crew members including two officers may also be indicted. a long island teenager dies from a serious illness during a band trip to disney land. now family and friends are searching for answers. >> students and teachers at seaford high choked back tears. >> just a terrible feeling. >> band member s were told that sophomore joseph tuti died of a mysterious illness after being hospitalized in la with a high fever. >> the first day at disney land he was feeling okay, but the second day he wasn't feeling good at all. he just got worse. >> his mother

ilene immediately flew to los angeles but it was too late. his father is battling stage 4 cancer. robert says he and his wife are renting after their home was flooded by hurricane sandy. they were hold their brilliant son came down with a debilitating infection. they said it was not contagious, however school officials and the family is in the process of obtaining medical details. >> the corner has not released joe's body yet. they still don't have a cause of death. a bunch of the friends of the family are getting together so set up a fund to help the family bury joe because they don't have the money to do that. >> wow. that teenager wasn't just a member of the band, he also participated in congress, the boy scouts and math competitions. in tonight's wjz health watch, a new study finds tanning facilities are giving out

misleading information about cancer risks. just 2/3 said they were allow 10 to 12-year-old to tan. no one under the age of 18 can tan in howard county without parental permission. also in health watch millions with ear infections send the children to the doctors office. randall pinkston reports for wjz. >> hello. >> 13 month old jordan reed has been suffering with chronic ear infections. her big sister, julia, used to get them too. >> she would spike really high fevers wouldn't eat wouldn't sleep. it was very uncomfortable for her. >> diagnosing and treating ear infections isn't always easy for doctors. now the american academy of peed is up --

pediatrics are updating their guidelines. >> the children who benefit most from starting medicines are those who have severe ear infections, having a high fever more than 102.2 or disrelationship or ruptured eardrum. >> ear infections are the most common reasons medicines are prescribed for children. >> doctors are advised to exam the eardrum. if it's not bulging, children should not get medicine. >> about 2/3 of kids get better without needing it. >> the recommendation for most children is to wait and watch and treat with painkillers. medicine may be needed if the symptoms don't improve after 3 days. in severe cases ear tube surgery is necessary to get the problem under control. julia is doing better since her surgery

might expect oakland at 36. the dew point s are low. that means above us is dry cold air. we'll start seeing some freezing drizzle, freezing rain and sleet for a few hours tomorrow and tomorrow afternoon. it can accumulate. we might see just a touch of sleet if it begins early enough. we don't usually expect it to get here until the afternoon. temperature 47 now. we'll be in the 40s again tomorrow. 48 dc, 44 in ocean city. locally, 45 up in westminster and a little cooler by the bay at 44 in kent island. very light winds in the region. tomorrow more of an east wind. it's going to pick up. we may see some higher than normal tides on the western side of the bay. lots of shower and thunderstorm activity. that's rolling over. there's cooler and drier air mass to the north.

another storm slow pressure over north texas blizzard conditions in the panhandle there. you see that spin. still have snow in portions of kansas. that storm is going to head up towards michigan, won't effect us too much. it will allow this moisture to flow into our region. you see the clouds beginning to build county to -- build down to the south. late tomorrow night it will quickly clear out after we see that rain. it could be an inch or more. this low is going to be stuck here for a few days so don't expect to see a lot of sun this week. east winds up to 30 knots. the bay temperature about 38 degrees. over night tonight patchy clouds, increasing clouds, around 31. tomorrow we'll see rain developing in the afternoon with temperatures in the mid 40s. it's going to become breezier and windy. the rain will end later tomorrow night but not after a good soaking. some areas could see some minor
