. controversy. maryland passes tough gun legislation. now a fight to overturn it and the governor's plan to gain support. a new campaign that will hit your tv tonight. good evening, everyone. thanks for joining us. governor o'malley signs new gun control legislation into law this week but the fight over firearms is far from over. gun control groups are pushing to get this issue before voters. we have exclusive video of the ad that pushes this new law. the governor's new campaign, more with derek valcourt. >> reporter: with the referendum in full swing, the ads are aimed

at getting extra support for the new gun law. and helping the politicians who backed it. governor o'malley's signature on the firearms safety act means it's scheduled to take effect on october 1st. but it is signatures on a referendum petition that could stop the law for another 18 months when voters would decide whether to shoot down the law which bans assault weapons purchases, puts a 10 round limit on magazines and requires handgun purchases to go through paid licensing and renewal fees. petitioners say momentum is on their side. >> we'll get at least 100,000. people can't wait to sign it. >> reporter: people are fighting back. >> something had to be done and here in maryland we stood up. >> reporter: we have an exclusive look at the new ad campaign launching this week claiming it reduces gun violence

by getting the guns out of the hands of criminals. >> it will work for maryland and it could work for the entire country. >> reporter: the nra has decided to support a court challenge to overturn the law. the petition organizer doesn't want to leave the fate of the gun law up to the courts. >> i thought this citizens of maryland deserved a voice on this issue. >> reporter: so for now the gun battle rages on. the backers of that referendum have until the end of may to gather about 18,000 signatures. then they have till the end of june to gather another 38,000 signatures. >> derek valcourt live for us tonight, thank you. the referendum, if approved, would help in 2014. parents at sandy look

elementary school continue their fight to ban the sale of high magazine rounds. >> heeders are taking a stand to make this state safer from gun violence. in newtown we learned the brutal truth that high capacity magazines can cause. the person who killed my son carried high capacity magazines into the school. >> parents banned together to support the bill. it would ban the magazines that would hold more than 10 rounds if passed. the tracks along with other evidence is being transferred to a dc area facility for analysis. the commuter train derailed and then collided with an on coming training. 70 people were hurt, nine are still in hospital tonight. the commute in connecticut will be messy monday. the tracks are going to remain closed while crews rebuild and repair the accident site.

officials say that could take a couple of days until the work is complete. now to the midwest where tornados are sweeping across a number of states. tonight numerous twisters touched down in four states. one was so strong it nearly sucked all of the water out of a lake. we have the latest from kansas city, missouri. >> reporter: a reported tornado ripped through a mobile home park. >> totally devastation here. >> reporter: rescue workers weaved through homes looking for anyone who may be trapped and crews carried the injured to safety. the powerful storm picked up trucks and tossed them like toys. in edmond, oklahoma, debris swirled in the air as a tornado went across a usually busy road way. >> look at the debris in the air! >> reporter: the storm damaged roofs and took down fences. in viola, kansas, a tornado

snaked across the sky. there are reports of tornados touching down in parts of oklahoma, kansas, and iowa. a home owner in mitchell county, iowa, looked shock as she surveyed storm damage in her neighborhood. it ripped apart barns and threw a piece of metal into power lines much the middle section of the country will be in for another round of severe weather monday. . now they are predicting the storm system will die down before hitting the east coast but it could bring us weaker storms. we have more on that coming up in the first morning weather forecast. an elderly couple is in the hospital tonight after being hit by a car. police are investigating the crash that occurred in parkville on saturday night. the elderly man and woman were crossing near putty hill avenue when they were hit. that man is 80 years old, has serious injuries, and the woman suffered minor injuries. the driver in the accident did stay at the scene. the investigation continues tonight into a stabbing this weekend at the university of

maryland baltimore county. it happened as students were preparing to go home for the summer. tonight tim williams has more on the incident and how students there are reacting. >> reporter: it's not the sendoff students leaving for the summer were expecting. >> i got the message on my phone and it was surprising but at the same time it was so random and i've never seen anything like this before. >> reporter: nick springer and his dad are packing up his dorm room at the university of maryland, baltimore county. nick is among those alerted by text message about a stabbing on campus occurring in his building here at ericsson hall. the crime is considered unusual. >> i don't have concerns. i think yesterday's incident was an isolated event. >> reporter: the security here, especially in the newer dorms, is really intense so i'm sure the person was a student here as well. >> reporter: one student was found stabbed and taken to hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. police took into custody a

student who had withdrawn from school. students identified the potential problems with a campus that lies in the middle of a major metropolitan area but never have felt unsafe on this compass. >> we've had -- on this campus. >> we get e-mails and text messages about things going on in the area so it's never a surprise, but it makes me nervous walking tomorrow sometimes. >> reporter: no names have been released. . we have checked in and so far no further information is available on the condition of the victim. the president of the associated press is putting pressure on the government after phone records were secretly recorded. he says two months of reporters' phone records were taken and he calls the act unconstitutional. the ap has not ruled out legal action. they do say that sources are now less willing to talk to ap reporters. the ap president is calling on

president obama to rein in the investigation calling it out of control. a huge honor for a man here in baltimore city. his hard work pays off when he gets a surprise from president obama. >> the president of the united states. >> reporter: everyone attending the graduation ceremony at morehouse college new that president obama was going to be the keynote speaker but this man had no idea his story was going to be told. >> he was taken away from his mom and put in the care of his grandparents. he was in the foster care system by age 14, and he has graduated on his way to harvard law school! >> reporter: shelton tells wbz he was shocked. >> i started crying and my family.

>> reporter: he graduated from city college in 2009 and is a member of a national foster care advisory group helping other foster kids. >> baltimore as a city is a great teacher, because of a kid like me can do what i've done, i know there are many other kids in baltimore who can do the same thing. >> reporter: the young man got a scholarship from black professional men inc. from baltimore. >> for the president of the united states to make a statement of that magnitude. it was a state of shock. we're all in state of shock right now. >> very promising future for this young man. leland told wbz says he wants to hold elected office some day to help children here in baltimore. someone in florida is a whole lot richer tonight. the only winning power ball ticket was sold 30 miles northeast of tampa continue $30 miles northeast of tampa continue it

into a tail spin. fortunately emergency crews reached him quickly and they expect him to make a full recovery from his injuries. police in hempstead, new york, are speaking out after a veteran police officer accidentally kills a student. she was in a house on friday when a masked man barged in and started asking for money. everyone was able to escape except for rebello. the police came face to face with the suspect who was holding a gun to the student's head. >> the police officer fired several rounds. the officer fired eight rounds in total. seven of those rounds struck our subject. one of them struck the victim. >> rebello was 21 years old. students honored her by wearing white ribbons during their graduation ceremony.

in boston an injured police officer talks about his recovery after a shootout in massachusetts. >> i see folks here with bad injuries and they're here with a smile and working hard throwing the ball around and moving their legs. it's inspiration to me. >> officer richard donna hue was seriously injured in the foot in the shootout with the tsarnaev brothers. . boeing's troubled dreamliners are getting back in the sky. united airlines will resume flights of the 787 passenger jets. the company is the only american airline that has dreamliners in its fleets. the planes were grounded after

safety incidents regarding lithium ion batteries. out of control drivers at a popular car show in glenbernie are in the cross hairs of police. dozens of drivers were caught doing burnouts and crossing lanes. we have more on the search for the drivers. >> reporter: this is dramatic youtube video of cars peeling out, speeding, and driving eratly in glenbernie. miss say it happened last week at a popular car show. an anonymous tipster alerted us to the video and we turned it over to police. now a search for the drivers is underway. >> it's unacceptable, quite frankly. >> reporter: you can hear spectators cheering and egging the drivers on and a police vehicle sitting idle as drivers exit on to this highway. we showed the video to mall

shoppers. >> it's scary. it's scary to think that people are peeling out like that. you know, it could hit somebody. >> you look at the accidents that happen at race tracks and then all of a sudden you see something like this where there's no barriers, that's sort of crazy. >> reporter: police made five traffic stops during the incidents while others got away putting drivers in danger. >> our officers will follow up in an attempt to identify who the drivers were. >> reporter: we repeatedly contacted the mall about the car show and this video. a spokesperson for the mall never returned our calls. . >> police did tell us that that car show was a sanctioned event. same sex couples from all across the couple could flock to baltimore for a historic event.

mayor stephanie rawlings blake will preside over a wedding. maryland has same sex marriage approved in a referendum. if it is this weekend it would be very wet outside getting married because it was a rainy, grey weekend. not the kind of nice sun shiny weekend we want heading into memorial weekend. >> yesterday's great weather if you are a duck. >> you're right. >> unfortunately not great weather for us but the temperatures i'm okay with that. >> yeah, mild. >> we're working on it, we're working on t 67 right now in baltimore, 65 in elton, everybody sitting in the upper 60s and it is after 11:00 at night. very comfortable temperatures out this. winds out of the east in baltimore around eight miles per hour so winds are light for the

most part. still that easterly component is filtering in more and more cloud cover for us. here is the satellite and radar for this state. we have a few showers that have pushed through. drizzle mainly in the metro area and then north. and a lot of areas still saying dry. we'll continue to see chances for a couple more showers as we head into the overnight. here is the bigger picture of what is going on on satellite and radar. we're dealing with this system that has a stationary front that is going to lift as a warm front as wie heed into -- we head into the overnight hours. we'll have a couple more showers for monday. but that system out towards the midwest. that is not going to head our way until we get into thursday night and friday. so keep that in mind. we won't be dealing with nasty weather just unsettled weather. we're looking at a mild and humid air mass that's going to give us a chance for a few rain showers over the next couple of days and even a thunderstorm or two will be possible. and that's going to stay in the

forecast, we'll be soaring into the mid-and upper 80s before you know it. winds at 5 to 10 knots tomorrow with patchy fog that will affect the visibility tomorrow. that overnight low temperature is 64 degrees, mild, mostly cloudy with passing shower or two. 80 degrees for tomorrow and variable clouds with a thundershower possible, much, much warmer. that is the story. we'll be warmer throughout the week as we move into 87 degrees on wednesday, 82 on thursday. i know this next five days doesn't look amazing but it won't be a washout. we could get heavy downpours during thunderstorms. but we have chances for rain and thunderstorms and chance for warmer temperatures. >> thanks so much. stan will be back with stan will be back with sports,, turkey sausage. turkey what?
