tornado victims are being laid to rest today as pounding rain hit the area, stalling the recovery process. edward lawrence reports for wjz from the heart of the destruction in moore, oklahoma. >> heavy rain and flooding added to the misery in moore, oklahoma today as the first of 24 tornado victims was laid to rest. family and friends gather for the funeral of 9-year-old antonio cateralla. she was one of 7 children killed. more than 6 inches of rain flooded streets today. >> our roof fell in last night because of the rain. >> the tornados spared diane meyers house, wiping out the rest of her block. she thought she was lucky until this morning. >> it's extremely hard. extremely hard. we've live d here 20 years. i've raised my kids here. >> after the rain stopped volunteers helped residents search through piles of rubble for their belongings. >> where do you start on this? >> on the top and just work

your way down. anything we can do to help. >> the governor of oklahoma announced a memorial service for tornado victims sunday night. president obama will visit the area the same day. >> they'll be a time for us to come together in prayer, for thankfulness and prayer for those who have lost loved ones . it will be a time for healing. >> today will be the last day of school in moore. teachers, students and administrators said their end of year good-byes and gave out backpacks and toys. >> the tornado damage this moore is estimated at $2 billion. to help victims go to redcross.org or call 800-red-cross. the red cross is on the ground in moore working around the clock. any donation will go to the survivors. as moore, oklahoma begins to recover and rebuild from the

tornados stay with wjz and cbs for the latest on the storms, the damage and people getting involved. more arrests today in the meat cleaver murder of a british soldier. police say the attackers have been on their radar in previous terrorists investigations. >> a british soldier stands guard outside the military barracks just down the street from where a fellow serviceman was murdered. prime minister david cameron killed military chiefs and called the killing hateful and horrific. >> the people who did this were trying to divide us. they should know something like this will only bring us together and make us stronger. >> teams of forensic experts scoured the streets for evidence the day after two men crashed their car into a british soldier before knifing him to death. one of the men talked to cameras holding knives with bloody hands. >> an eye for an eye, a tooth

for a tooth. >> he called the killing revenge for the death of muslims. police shot him and another man. they're now hospitalized under armed guard. officers raided homes in london on thursday trying to determine if the murder suspects are part of a wider plot to terrorize britain. >> residents are shocked at what happened. the prime minister is urging them to carry on as usual. >> authorities are crediting a scout leader with saving lives. she confronted the suspects minutes after the attack. >> i could see a butcher's knife. >> she tried to reason with the attackers. >> he said i killed him. i said why. he said he's a british soldiers. >> protestors clashed with police claiming the government is not doing enough to stop extremists from spreading across the country. >> british lawmakers held an emergency session this morning

to discuss the attack and security is stepped up at army barracks across london. a friend of the boston marathon bombers is shot in florida. gigi is in the news room with more on the possible criminal connection. gigi. >> reporter: the fbi says ibgragim todashev confessed that he and tamerlan were part of a brutal triple murder back in 2011. fbi agents say they were questioning todashev when he flame violent and made a threatening move towards the investigators. that's when he was shot and killed. the government said todashev and tamerlan tsarnaev trained together at a gym in boston. the fbi became interested in todashev when phone records show that he made several calls to tamerlan tsarnaev. back to you. >> thank you. the fbi says so far it's found any evidence to

link todashev to the boston bombings. the army psychiatrist in the deadly fort hood shooting he wants to fire his attorney. the military judge is consider request. she delayed jury selection until june 4th. he could face the death penalty in the attack that killed 13 people. the boy scouts of america is voting today to allow openly gay boys into their organization. that decision is expected to have a major impact. 1,400 people cast ballots. that decision is not expected until 7:00. a long standing ban on gay adult leaders stays in place. a rescue off the coast of ocean city but it wasn't a swimmer. a greek oil tanker was 60 miles out when it radioed a crew member on board had a serious head injury. they medivaced the man around 7:00

this morning. the patient was taken to a new jersey hospital. for some the long memorial day weekend is already underway. outside right now it is partly sunny, warm and actually pretty nice. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk has look at live doppler radar. >> we're about 8 or 9 degrees cooler than yesterday but there's plenty of moisture out. we have activity mainly across portions of virginia, the mountain areas. we're going to have to watch this activity as it moves off. right now nothing close by. maybe one little up here in southern pennsylvania. as you can see, it's moving just through delta. we'll keep watching the radar. we probably will see some activity later on this evening. could see some heavy downpours. tomorrow one thing is for sure, once this

children are recovering after a school bus slams into three other buses. it injured at least 50 kids actually grassy strip along the interstate became a triage area for first e responders. most of the children had minor injuries. the driver of the bus was air lift today a hospital. police are investigating the cause of that crash. a 33 year old father of three is kill in a freak accident on a california highway. a pipe crashed through the windshield of his car. nick smith has the story. >> it struck him in the jaw area. >> sky 7 hd was over the scene minute offense a man driving west on i-508 was killed after a pipe went through his windshield and tore through his jaw. >> the way the pipe came through the vehicle it came bouncing off a vehicle. >> the victim is 33-year-old

michael cox. he leaves behind a wife and three children. his volvo cashed here. he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> i don't think a driver driving down the highway would know that pipe may have bounced out. >> investigators believe the metal pipe is one like this, commonly used as a leveraging tool to tie down materials. larry has more than 35 years of trucking under his belt and a safety record to match. >> sometimes stuff falls off. you have to be very careful about securing everything. >> the traffic back upstretched for miles. >> another routine, make sure everything is where it's supposed to be. >> to -- does that come from experience? >> of course and common sense. >> they don't think they will be able to find the vehicle unless a witness comes forward.

it was an uneven day on wall street. >> [bells ringing] >> the markets were up for most of the day. the dow was down 13, the s and p is off, the nasdaq is down 4. let's go to new york with alexis has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> stocks bounced back after an initial sell off. the dow plunged more than 100 points after a surprisingly weak report on chinese manufacturing. that sparked a global stock market sell off. good news on the u.s. economy helped the market rebound. sales of new home rose in april to the second highest level since the summer of 2008. the unemployment lines got shorter as 23,000 fewer americans applied for jobless benefits. >> ford will stop making cars in australia because of sore

all right. a live look outside. the aquarium today. i'm sure those dragon boat s are out there. >> it will be busy this weekend. >> yes, lots of people coming. >> maybe they will have some special deals. i'm not sure, but it's possible. later on we're going to talk about ocean city and the beach forecast. it's not going to be very warm down there. right now let's take a look at temperatures. cooler than yesterday by about 6 degrees right now. we're at 80. the dew point is 5 or 6 degrees lower than yesterday. it's not nearly as humid. the humidity is at 60%. barometer falling at 29.79. 74 oakland, 65 ocean city, only 65 degrees and it will probably be about the same temperature the next few days. 82 in dc. there are some thunderstorms the developed over portions of

piedmont and the mountains in virginia. 77 rock hall, kent island, annapolis and 81 in bel air. south winds in the region bring in rather moist and warm conditions. that's going to change radically by tomorrow and tomorrow afternoon. shower and thunderstorm activity, one of them just southwest of the frederick area. we'll watch that. that has that has a history of heavy downpours and gusty winds. a few more across southern virginia. southern maryland you will see some showers in maybe 2 hours or so. this batch southwest of martins berg is going to take a little why but may get to frederick and washington down. about 7:30 or 8:00 we will look at thunderstorm activity. we have a frontal system that has to go through the region. until that happens we will deal with showers and pop up thunderstorms. that front is going to move off the east

coast, take clouds with it. we expect an area of low pressure for a storm to develop around the jersey coast. that's going to keep a lot of clouds in tomorrow and drag down very chilly air. as that cool air continues to flow in it will get breezy, maybe a little rain on friday. saturday clouds and showers to our north and northeast, we'll be much cooler, partly cloud skies but breezy, only in the 60s for the most part for our highs. winds tomorrow picking up out of the northwest. the bay temperature about 66 degrees today. some showers and maybe a thunderstorm or two. 62 tonight. tomorrow a high of only 64 degrees with cloudy skies, some showers around. breezy and a lot cooler on your friday to start the holiday weekend. >> we can turn the ac off then. >> it can be snowing on friday but it's still friday. >> true. >> sweatshirt. >> all right. don't miss tonight's cbs prime time line up. at 10:00 it's elementary then stay tuned

lay out his strategy for dealing with terrorist threats. he defended the use of drone strikes to target terror suspects over seas. >> simply put, these strikes have saved lives. >> the president conceded the strikes have resulted in civilian causalities but said to do nothing would invite more. he argued congress is briefed on every strike, including the one that killed al-qaeda organizer alaki. >> they deauthorized the classification of this and the death of three other americans in drone strikes. >> the white house is promising to look at ideas for extending over sight of drone strikes. two senators have drafted legislation that will do just that. senator an gus king of maine is cosponsoring the bill with marco rubio. >> it's so the executive isn't judge, jury and prosecutor and executioner all in one.

for the twister to leave the couple homeless. >> by the time i shut the door i think it was like 20 or 30 seconds later we heard the roar of the tornado. >> the heywood's want to rebuild in moore but they say it would be too difficult to return to this neighborhood. >> it would just be kind of scary. you know, it's hard to sleep now just hearing the sounds. the sound comes back and you wake up wondering if you're in that closet. once the storm was coming janie headed to the closet, a place she's found comfort before. >> my kids are in the military. some are still. some have got out. when they went to the war and the fight i would always go in there and call on god. >> you would pray in that closet. >> right. many times. >> the heywood's are now picking up the pieces and hoping to rebuild out of harm's way. in moore, oklahoma, bigad

chilling home video of powell, telling how she wanted to protect her family from her husband. >> this is me, july 29th, 2008. >> it's as if suzanne powell is speaking from beyond the grave. >> covering all my basis making sure that if something happens to me or my family or all of us that our assets are documented. >> before she disappeared in december of 2009 she went all her home and documented all of her and her families belongings just in case. >> i had necklaces too. he got in a rage and broke this, as you can see. there's pearls in there. broke this and threw all my dvd's and made a mess because he was angry at me. this was about a year or two back. >> suzanne was so afraid of what her husband, josh powell, might do she wrote a secret will

and testament dated one month earlier and kept it in a safety deposit box with instructions that josh was not allowed to see it. inside she writes, for mine and my children's safety i feel the need to have a paper trail at work that's not accessible to my husband. she said i want it documented that there's extreme turmoil in their marriage. she said josh threatened her if they got a divorce there will be no lawyers, only a meet ya to. the boys will not grow up with a mom and a dad. >> when powell disappeared in 2009 her husband was considered the prime suspect. last year he killed his two sons and himself by setting their home on fire. a warning today from national weather forecasters. get ready for another busy hurricane system. last year was the third busiest season on record with 10 hurricanes, including sandy and caused $50 billion in damage. a normal year has 12 named storms, 6

hurricanes and three major storms with winds over 110 miles per hour. here's the breakdown for this year's forecast. experts expect 13 to 20 named storms. 7 to 11 are expected to strengthen into hurricanes. we saw peaks of sunshine here and there today. take a live look outside where the skies are over cast and some serious may may be heading our way. bob is here now with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> don't like that forecast. that's for sure. we're going to have other hurricane forecasts that will be coming out in the next week or so. let's take a look at radar. we have one or two showers close to the city. most of the action is south of the area in south maryland. across northern virginia, that's where we're seeing the bulk of the actively. one shower just popped up northeast of the city. right now around the perry hall, parkville and just west of joppa, right along harford road

discover new evidence. kaitlyn shepard was abducted along with another teenager while getting off a school bus. >> this newly released photo shows catherine shepard on the school bus, probably minutes before she was abducted. authorities released it wednesday so everyone can get a closer look at what she was wearing. >> until we know differently, we're going to assume that she's alive. >> wednesday's search efforts focused on the wooded area. authorities road atv's, used k-9s and led volunteer searchs through the thick brush. scomblsz it's a poor family out there losing their daughter rite now. we want to help them try to find her. >> late tuesday authorities found the girl's backpack and purse not far from here in a ditch along the side of the road in a town of frasier. these new clues provided major lead for authorities. >> we had to have thrown the

backpack away. >> the backpack and purse were found 10 miles south on the other side of the river where the 12-year-old girl was. law enforcement seemed to focus special attention on that wednesday saying they were doing another extensive search. we know also know that the suspected abductor, michael cleaneder worked at the fog confinement, the one where the 12-year-old escaped and he was found dead by suicide. authorities in her hometown say they're not giving up. >> we're still very hopeful. i think we have to be positive. i think we need that for the family and for the community. >> more than 120 law enforcement officers and 200 volunteers are helping with the effort. two homes in florida are demolished. mary bubala is in the news room with the latest. >> reporter: the two homes from

in ses ner, florida. that's where jeff bush died after a sink hope opened up under his bedroom taking his life. after crews demolished the home where he lived they con deemed the two homes on the other side of his. the people living there had a few days to the collect their things. the clean up following the demolition is expected to take 3 days. >> thank you. fences will be put up around the properties to keep people out. it appears some of the people who hired michael jackson had harsh words to say about the king of pop. a lawyer called jackson a quote, freak in an e-mail. a company employee responded to that e-mail, meeting jackson in person would be creepy. all this came out as evidence during the wrongful death lawsuit filed by michael jackson's mother against the concert promoter. it has been one of the

a little bit of spotty rain from a couple of places. not that much. the clouds put a cap on the temperatures. so far they've put a cap on the thunderstorms. there are some developing to the south and west of us. i'll show you those shortly. 80 degrees now. the dew point is is -- is about 6 or 7 degrees as it was yesterday. it's not quite as moist although it probably feeling that way. humidity at 60%. the barometer falling to 29.69. 65 ocean city, 82 cumberland, 82 dc with showers just west of washington now. 72 oakland. the dew point in the med

mid 6 ohs. any 60s. any showers tonight could have heavy downpours that. can cause water to accumulate on roadways. a little shower here east of la plata. one quick shower just moved through parkville. not much with that. a lighter one here just northeast of dc near lees berg. this is a strong thunderstorm that has possible hail with it. they've had some reports in central virginia of quarter sized hail with these showers and thunderstorms just as we saw yesterday across that region. we'll get into a northwest flow, much cooler air. we'll probably have lingering showers as well. still some thunderstorms developing. by the time the front gets to us it
