monique? >> reporter: well, mary, you gotta think about this. the bay bridge is nearly 200 feet above the water. so these guys are working in pretty dangerous conditions. so when an accident happened, it also takes a special team of firefighters to respond. >> terrifying moments for a contractor, performing maintenance under the westbound span of the bay bridge. anne arundel county fire says the 51-year-old was working on a suspension platform, 15 feet below the roadway, when he was hit by a paint can being lowered to him. the can knocked him offer his feet and onto the platform. however, initial reports had said, the worker had fallen nearly two stories. >> when we arrived on location, we found that that was not the case. the patient had actually incurred the injury on the platform. >> reporter: a special operations team from anne arundel county fire raced to the scene. and they began a dangerous rope rescue, to move the worker from the platform onto the roadway. >> technical rope rescues, one of the areas of expertise that

they have. and they practice on the bridge, on a regular basis. >> reporter: the accident shut down all westbound traffic, on the bay bridge. drivers stuck in the pickup sat in their cars for nearly two hours. >> a lot of people, they're walking around, waiting. drinking some water. or they say, oh, my god, what's going on? >> reporter: for people -- people at sandy point park, a day at the beach turned into a rescue. >> it's got to be serious. for me, it takes a very special person to get up there to do all of that work. >> reporter: after being taken by ambulance to sandy point, the worker was air-lifted to shock trauma. his condition is listed as serious but nonlife threatening. >> reporter: and firefighters say the worker suffered injuries to his head and neck. reporting live, monique griego. wjz eyewitness news. >> the anne arundel county fire department conducted the rescue to help from the queen anne's

county fire department. wjz is updating the breaking news from baltimore county we first told you about today at 4:00. an suv slams into a post office on liberty road in gwen oak. sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene earlier this afternoon. baltimore county fire officials say two people were hurt in all of this. the extent of their injuries are unknown. searching for a robber. tonight, howard county police want to help catch a crook. vic is in the newsroom with new video police have just released. >> well, kai. howard county police are offering a reward for information on an armed robbery. this is surveillance video of the robbery which took place in the 7500 block of columbia road in colombia, around 2:30 in the morning. a man wearing a black, hooded sweatshirt, with a black mask, covering his face, ordered the employee to empty the registers. the employee complied. the robber got away with an undisclosed amount of money. howard county police are asking anyone with information to call

410-313-stop. >> again, you can get a $500 reward for information about this robbery. a major drug bust in north baltimore. baltimore police raided a home this morning in the 4900 block of st. george's avenue. they found more than $55,000 in cash, and lots of drugs ready to be sold. anthony hall was arrested. police say he has an extensive criminal history, including murder and drug-related charges. one week later, businesses are still trying to clean up after that huge explosion, following a train collision with a truck in baltimore county. wjz is live in rosedale. investigator mike hellgren has the latest on the condition and the investigation into the truck driver. good evening, mike? >> good evening, kai. doctors released that truck driver from shock trauma over the weekend. but he's still got a long road to recovery. what federal and state investigators have yet to release is their comprehensive safety review into his company. >> reporter: one week after his

truck collided with his train in rosedale, sparking a powerful explosion, john alban, jr., is out of the hospital. wjz was told to go away at his house in essex. alban's neighbors saw him upon his return. >> it is possible he had a neck brace on. >> he's a good man. he serves the community. he volunteers at the fire department. he's been down at the fire department for a long time. >> reporter: near alban's trucking business, a checkpoint remains, as csx crews continue working at the site. >> reporter: from the ground, you can see where the accident happened. there were no lights or gatessa the this private grade crossing. the ntsb is looking into the crossing but refuse to look for any updated information on the investigation. a spokesman said the federal agency would do so wednesday, including details on attempts to interview alban and a time line of events. >> if you look at this hallway now, it's back to good old days. >> reporter: businesses that suffered severe damage, are making significant progress, getting back on track.

the victims community, coming together to help. rochelle? >> reporter: hi, mary. it's a story of bad sportsmanship. the two men accused of hitting the victims are both facing charges. the victim is now in critical condition. and his medical bills are piling up. >> reporter: cell phone video captures frightening moments after 25-year-old matthew fortis's sucker punch by two fans. >> witnesses tell police, these oriole fans, michael bell and gregory fleishman were taunting fortis throughout the game, some say because of his yankees apparel. >> he had a group of young men threw a beer. when they threw that beer, it ended up hitting another individual. >> reporter: fortis falls over the concrete barrier, hitting his head. cell phone video captures the commotion. the men accused of instigating the fight are placed under arrest. >> he was spitting on him.

good evening, even. thank you for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. as a sexual assault case unfolds at the u.s. naval academy, congress is stepping up pressure to stop assaults on all branches of the military. the top officers were on capitol hill today to face tough questions. >> as the u.s. naval academy deals with an investigation of three of its football players for sexual assault, senators in washington say the military system for handling sexual assault is not working and it is time for a change. >> discipline is the heart of the military culture. and trust is it's its soul. the plague of sexual assault erodes both the heart and the soul. >> reporter: lawmakers are proposing to strip commanders of some of their authority to discipline forces. that faces opposition from the pentagon's top brass. >> the role of the commander should remain central. our goal should be to hold them

reports a 35% jump in cases of unwanted sexual contact, ranging from rape to groping since tent 10. denise is in the newsroom with more on this high-profile trial. >> bradley manning is accused of sending thousands of classified documents to the website wikileaks. they say the leaks put those documents into the hands of the enemy. today, a one-time computer hacker testified that manning never expressed desire to aid the enemy. he said he had several online chats to manning. he said manning notified him. face a possible life sentence if convicted. >> this is the second day of testimony. the trial is expected to last three months.

a man seeking to have clients freed while he awaits trial. they stay steven mcdaniel is not a threat to the community and his bond is too high. he was arrested for the murder of lauren giddings. the 27-year-old was living in georgia after graduating mercer university law school. deadly at any time that struck near oklahoma city on friday is now a record setter. they have surveyed the damage done by the twister that hit elreno and have upgraded its ranking. the national weather service says the damage and death toll would have been far greater if it hit a more populated area. meteorologist chelsea ingram is breaking down the new record- setting numbers associated with this specific system. >> this tornado was an ef5. that is the largest ef rating by the national weather

service. let's take a look at this graphic. so i can explain a little more to you. it's the widest tornado ever recorded on earth, with a width of 2.6 miles. keep in mind, that's more than half the size of the bay bridge. and winds were clocked around 296 miles per hour, from a mobile doppler radar. while it carves more than a 16- mile path over a period of 40 minutes. certainly a significant storm. and yes, a record-setter. now, back inside to you guys. >> chelsea, thank you. hundreds of truck drivers make an unexpected stop at fedex field. normally, the home of the washington redskins. alex demetrick reports, today it was road check 2013 that was being played out. >> trucks of all shapes and sizes were directed off the capitol beltway, into parking lots of fedex field in prince george's county. waiting for the inspectors and state police, looking for more than mechanical defects that could violate safety laws.

argued against that he was mentally ill. if he fails to, he will lose expert witnesses who could testify about his sanity or lack thereof. a 17-year-old boy dies, saving his sister. the teen jumped into the niagara river, off squaw island in new york. after his 7-year-old sister slipped off rocks and fell into the water. he was able to save his sister. but he was then swept away by a swift current. another sister jumped in to help her brother. and at that point, a bystander jumped in to save her. >> grab the sister, started bringing her in. this is account -- the second sister. and i couldn't grab the young man. >> a dive team pulled the 17- year-old from the water and rescue crews began attempts to revive him. he was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. the sisters are said to be okay. firefighters are making major progress against a big

wind-whipped foot wildfire in southern california. but there's more work to go for more than 2,000 firefighters currently on the job. the wildfire has burned more than 32,000 acres in the palmdale area, north of los angeles. an official with the angeles national forest says the fire has destroyed a half dozen homes and threatened about a thousand others. three people have been hurt. helped by higher humidity, firefighters gained a lot of ground going into today's battle, increasing containment from 40 to 60%. a if federal judge has granted a request by jesse jackson, jr., to seal portions of his sentencing memorandum. the documents contained sensitive details about his personal information. the medical condition of one of his family members is also included. in february, jackson pled guilty to charges of using campaign funds for personal use. he'll be sentenced next mont. britain is celebrating the 60th anniversary of queen

elizabeth's coronation. kate, the duchess of cambridge, was among the guests. lucy macdonald reports for wjz, from london. >> reporter: queen elizabeth walked into westminster ashy, to the sound of the same trumpets that played at her coronation 60 years ago. ♪ [ music ] the same crown she wore in 1953, sat on the altar. the jewel-encrusted st. edwards crown has been locked inside the tower of london until now. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: a few thousand guests helped queen elizabeth celebrate the anniversary, including her husband, prince phillip, who days earlier, canceled the engagement because he was sick. prince william and kate were back for the first time since they got married in 2011. it could be their last public appearance before the baby. >> she looked beautiful. >> reporter: most well wishers had their eyes on the queen.

>> she has served the country tremendously well. >> reporter: it's beautiful and sunny in london today. much better weather than on the queen's coronation day, 60 years ago, when 3 million people waited in heavy rain to catch a glimpse of the new queen. elizabeth was just 27 years old when she was crowned monarch. the coronation took place 16 months after the death of her father, king george vi. fan brown was a child. but remembers. >> in the next door neighbor's house with a television because we didn't have one. >> reporter: at 87, queen elizabeth is not yet britain's longest serving monarch. queen victoria served for 63 years. >> and the queen's coronation crown weighs almost 5 pounds. it is the heaviest crown in the royal collection of crown jewels. it has 444 gems, including diamonds, rubies, and sapphires. and maybe that's why she wasn't
