about tonight. a dramatic rescue on the bay bridge. you watched it unfold on wjz. we now know about how it happened. wjz is live at the bridge right now. monique griego with more on the heartstopping rescue. >> reporter: while the bay bridge is nearly 200 feet above water. these guys are working in pretty dangerous conditions. and when an accident happens, it also takes a special team of firefighters to respond. >> terrifying moments for a contractor, performing maintenance under the westbound span of the bay bridge. nan arundel county fire says the 51-year-old was working on a suspension platform. the can knocked him off his drink. however, initial reports had said the worker had fallen nearly two stories. >> we arrived on location. we found that that was not the kay. the patient had actually incurred the injury on the platform. >> a special operations team from anne arundel county fire

raced to the scene. and they began a dangerous rope rescue to move the worker from the platform onto the roadway. >> technical road rescues, one of the areas of expertise that they have. and they practice on the bridge, on a regular basis. >> the accident shut down all westbound traffic on the bay bridge. drivers stuck in the backup. >> a lot of people waiting. and they're drinking water. and saying, oh, god, what's going on? >> reporter: for a day at sandy park, a day at the beach turned into a worker rescue. >> what did you think? >> it has to be very serious. for me, itic toes a very special person to be up there to do that work. >> reporter: the worker was air- lifted to shock trauma. his condition is listed as serious but nonlife- threatening. >> reporter: and firefighters say that worker mostly suffered

injuries to his head and neck. report being live, monique griego, wjz eyewitness news. >> monique, thank you. and wjz has just learned that the man worked for blastec enterprises, incorporated, of baltimore. a raid yields a massive amount of cash and drugs. and now a suspect with extensive records is in custody. mary has more on that raid. >> reporter: police say the suspect is well known to them, with murder and drug charges in his background. take a look at what police seized from the home in the 4900 block of st. george in north baltimore. more than $55,000 in cash and half a kilo of suspected heroin. and large amounts of drug- packaging material. 39-year-old anthony hall is now in custody. for some time, detectives have been monitoring suspected drug activity from the home. today, they got enough evidence to obtain a warrant and they were able to conduct that raid. back to you, denise. >> all right. thank you, mary. hall is being interrogated by

detectives and will soon be charged. destruction and chaos. one week ago in baltimore's rosedale county community, the blast heard and felt for miles. tonight, they are still looking into the disaster. investigator mike hellgren explains, the community still faces a long recovery. >> reporter: vic, there's still an extensive and extensive cleanup. and while doctors at shock trauma released the truck driver, federal and state for authorities have yet to release what they found in their comprehensive safety review of his company. >> reporter: one week after his truck collided with a train in rosedale, sparking a powerful explosion, john alban, jr., is out of the hospital. wjz was told to go away at his house in essex. alban's neighbors saw him upon his return. >> we were in the hospital. we had a neck brace on and stuff. i hope the best for his family. >> he's a good man. he serves the community. he volunteers at the fire department. he's been down at the fire department for a long time.

>> reporter: near alban's trucking business, a checkpoint remains. >> from the ground, you can see where the accident happened. there were no lights or gates at this private grade crossing. >> reporter: the ntsb is looking into the crossing but refused to release any updated information on the investigation. a spokesman said the federal agency would do so wednesday, including details on attempts to interview alban and a time line of events. >> but if you look at this hallway now, it's back to good old days. >> reporter: businesses that suffered severe damage, are making significant progress, getting back on track. >> reporter: it's hard to believe, same place. >> reporter: this was the plumbers and steam fitters apprentice training, one week ago. now, the shattered glass is gone. and spirits are higher. >> to be here, a week later. and i know everybody is okay. this building is coming back together. you know, it will come back. but it will be something i'll always remember. >> reporter: the national transportation safety board says part of its review

includes blood testing and the review of cell phone records for both the truck driver and the train operators. reporting live in rosedale, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> mike, thank you. crews have repaired $120,000 in damage to the tracks, which remained -- or rather reopened to trains late last week. environmental cleanup continues on the scene. howard county police are looking for the suspect who held a 7-eleven at gunpoint. the suspect walks in, holding the gun, demanding money. the clerk complies, handing over an unknown amount of cash. the suspect is male. about 5'7," wearing all black, including a black mask that covered his face. a violent assault at an orioles game. tonight, a man is fighting for his life. and doctors say his condition has taken a turn for the worst. wjz is live. rochelle ritchie explains how a

victim and the local community are trying to help. it's a story of bad sportsmanship. the two men accused of hitting the 25-year-old are now facing charges. the victim is listed in critical condition. and his medical bills are piling up. >> reporter: cell phone video captures the frightening moments after 25-year-old matthew fortes's sucker punch at camden yards as they took on the nationals. >> reporter: witnesses tell police, these orioles fans, 21- year-old michael bell, and 22- year-old gregory fleishman, were taunting fortes throughout the game, some say because of his yankees apparel. >> we had a group of men, threw that beer. when they threw that beer, it ended up hitting another individual. >> reporter: fortes falls over the concrete barrier, hitting his head. paramedics were called to the stand. the men accused of instigating the fight, placed under arrest. >> he was spitting on that guy laying on the ground. he was spitting on him, he was. >> reporter: fortes remains in

the hospital with a fractured skull. this has sparked another fan to help. >> these are flyers that will help. >> reporter: he owns jimmy john's and is holding a special fundraiser to help fortese. >> on wednesday, june 26th, we're going to hold a fundraiser night for matt and his family. from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., we'll donate 25% of all of our rodes -- provides to help matt and his family. >> it could have been anybody at the game. >> reporter: the two suspects are charged with assault. both were held on a $50,000 bond. and the men are also facing charges of disorderly conduct. i'm rochelle ritchie, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you, rochelle. now, the orioles spokesperson has not commented on the altercation. an suv smashes into a post office in gwen oak. sky eye chopper 13 was over the

scene just after 4:00, as a tow truck pulled the suv from the building. you can see the heavy damage at the front. the county fire department reports injuries to two people. no word how serious or the cause of the accident. new twists in the scandal rocking the irs. conservative groups say they have been the target of the tax agency for years. danielle nottingham reports with the latest testimony to lawmakers. >> reporter: these six leaders of conservative groups say the irs unfairly singled them out for their beliefs. >> this was not an accident. this is a willful act of intimidation. >> reporter: becky garrettson, testified the irs ignored her application for tax-exempt status for more than ray year upon then asked for a couple of all speeches, e-mails and donor lists. >> i'm a born-free, american woman, wife, mother and citizen. and i'm telling my government

2010 conference in anaheim was the focus of one report. one official stayed five nights in a room that regularly goes for $3500 a night. turning to the weather this week just gets better and better every day. a live look outside right now. bright blue skies. comfortable temperatures. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist chelsea ingram and bob turk are updating the conditions. bob? >> i bet if you turn the camera west, you can see the blue ridge mountains today. take a look at temps now. just extremely comfortable now. 75 here. oakland up there in the allegheny at 64. hageerstown in the valley. at 73. ocean city at 65. now, remember yesterday at this time, we had a heavy rain shower move through the region. so temperatures right now, about 4 degrees cooler than everywhere yesterday. 6 degrees cool at easton. ocean city only at 3 degrees cooler. couple of places west of us, actually 2 to 3 degrees warmer than it was yesterday. radar, absolutely clear from

here up to new england. and down into the carolinas. now, that may change by the end of the week. in fact, chelsea now has a look at the tropics. our first look this year. chelsea? >> you're exactly right, bob. we've got a disturbance that is forming right now in the gulf of mexico. now, it has a 40% chance of becoming a named tropical system in the next 48 hours. most likely a time period for this forecast would be wednesday into thursday. that's when the wind shear is forecast to die down a little bit. take a look at -- look at this forecast. we're expecting this area of low pressure to creep up the atlantic seaboard and eventually interact with an area of low pressure headed our way from the west. now, the timing of this low- pressure system, there's still some uncertainty. on when it's going to make it up the atlantic seaboard and how far inland it's going to be making it towards us. and that could mean the difference from perhaps a shower on saturday to a complete washout on both friday and saturday. and bob will have more, coming up in your complete first

it is sunny and 75 degrees in central maryland now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. as a sexual assault case, involving football players, unfolds at the u.s. naval academy, congress is step up the pressure to stop this crisis inside the military. mary joins us live with more. >> the pentagon's top officers are on capitol hill, to face tough questions about the huge amount of sexual assaults in the military, including one activity case at the naval academy. >> reporter: as the u.s. naval academy in annapolis deals with an investigation of three of its football players for sexual assault, senators in washington say the military system for handling sexual assault is not working and it is time for a change.

>> discipline is the heart of the military culture. and trust is its soul. the plague of sexual assault erodes both the heart and the soul. >> reporter: lawmakers are proposing legislation to strip commanders of some of their authorities to discipline the forces. that idea faces opposition from the pentagon's top brass. >> the role of the commander should remain central. our goal should be to hold commanders more accountable. not render them less able to help us correct chrys. >> reporter: the pentagon estimates as many as 26,000 incidents last year. the military chief told lawmakers it is a serious problem. >> these crimes violate everything our army stands for. and they simply cannot [ inaudible ] [ no audio, please stand by ] >> by committing a crime, they threaten the trust and discipline that makes our military strong. >> reporter: just a few days

later, news broke that three members of the naval academy football team are accused of gang-raping a drunken female midshipman. >> she woke up the next morning, still at the football house, with her back all bruised. >> reporter: wurk said when the neighbor -- burke said when the neighbor reported it, she was reprimanded for drinking, while the players went unpunished and were allowed to play football. >> reporter: and the names of the players have not been made public. the investigation into the sexual assault has been ongoing for more than a year. denise? >> reporter: all right. thank you very much, mary. the defense department reports a 35% jump in cases of unwanted sexual contact. ranging from rape to groping since 2010. a child is injured after being hit by a van in howard county. she was flown to shock trauma. no word on her condition. police believe the teen stepped in front of the van.

and the driver did not see her in time. more buzz tonight about the maryland gubernatorial race. former lieutenant governor michael steele used a platform it talk about entering the race for governor. pat warren has more on the 2014 primary. >> reporter: the current luden -- lieutenant governor, anthony brown is in. >> great to be here. >> former lieutenant governor, michael steele is considering his own bid. >> i love the idea of service. i think we can move the state in a different direction. >> reporter: michael steele talked about the governor's race yesterday on msnbc rundown. the same day david craig announced his candidacy for governor. and today, ron george, seen here with newt gingrich in annapolis last year, told wjz, he's entering the race. there's a theme here. >> we have people that are hurting, people who need jobs. >> we've lost 37,000 employers over the last eight years.

here's a live look outside now. feels like san diego out there, doesn't it? >> a lot of days like this in southern california. beautiful. temperatures in the mid-70s pretty normal out there. for us, our normal high of the day is 79. we didn't quite get there. looks like tomorrow, we may get there, and add a degree. beautiful out there. 75. 77, d.c., cumberland, 64 out in oakland. they were in the low 40s this morning. 65 in ocean city. and locally, temperatures in the low to mid-70s. just very, very comfortable. as soon as the sun goes down, tonight, 8:30, 9:00, temperatures will drop like a rock, quickly into the 50s. and by tomorrow morning, some areas north and west of town will be 46, 47, and 48 degrees, believe it or not. west winds right now, very light winds. had a little breeze today. kept it very, very comfortable. elkton has a 12-mile, northwest

breeze. first of all, for florida, going to get a lot of rain. some areas could see 4, 5, 6, 7 inches of rain over the next four days. this tropical moisture moving to the north and northeast. some of it will stay offshore. but we think we'll get some of that moisture in our region. in addition, a cold front out to the west will be pressing to the east. these two combined looks like a pretty good shot here of rain. at least most of friday. may linger into saturday. all depends how fast that moves and how much of this moisture actually gets inland. we'll look for a pretty wet end to the week. and probably a start to the weekend. and then it will dry out somewhat, we think, on sunday. look for a pretty wet friday right now, based on our current models. tomorrow, beautiful, sunny day again. with high pressure in control. cool night, sunny afternoon. a little warmer. the front approaching from the west, yes. and our moisture from the south. for the time being, thursday, probably staying dry. but friday, all of that stuff comes together to give us rain. southeast winds. 5 to 10 knots.

marlie hall reports for wjz from boston. >> reporter: james whitey bulger's attorney arrived in court tuesday, and started the day, introducing bulger to a group of 225 possible jurors. bulger said, "good morning." two years after the mobster's life on the run came to an end, lawyers began narrowing down a jury pool of 675 people. the judge expects opening statements will start monday. >> still cry sometimes about it, you know? >> reporter: steve davis plans to attend every day of the trial. davis's sister, deborah, was one of 19 people, bulger is accused of murdering. davis is planning to testify against bulger. >> look at us. the families. look at the pain and the suffering that we're going through all these years, over 30 years. >> reporter: in addition to 19 murders, bulger is accused of a long list of other crimes, including extortion and corrupting law enforcement. he could face life in prison, if convicted. >> reporter: bulger, now 83 years old, was an fbi informant, who gret secretly --

who secretly snitched to lawmakers. that was until 1995, when an agent tipped him off that he was going to be indicted. bulger and his girlfriend were found living in a modest california apartment, stocked with weapons and cash. lawyers for both sides, each planned to call about 80 witnesses, from crimefightersers to convicted criminals. the trial is expected to last all summer. in boston, marlie hall, wjz eyewitness news. >> the judge has ruled that bulger's fbi informant file can be admitted as evidence during the trial. a major decision by a judge in the case of the man accused of a mass murder inside a crowded movie theater. mare sein the newsroom with the -- mary is in the newsroom with the latest on this high-profile case. >> the judge accepted james holam m else -- holm' plea -- holmes'

plea for mental insanity. he opened fire inside an aurora, colorado movie theater last summer. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. mental health evaluators must review over 40,000 pages in documents in the case before they do their review. >> if jurors find holmes not guilty by reason of insanity, he would be committed indefinitely to the state mental hospital. 22-year-old brandon mcelwain is one of two men accused of forcing their way into eye home -- a home. mcelwain punched her, knocking her down a flight of steps. police tracked him down near the scene. hundreds of truck drivers made an unexpected stop at fedex field. normally, the home of the washington redskins. how alex demetrick reports, today, it was 2013 that was being played out. >> trucks of all shapes and

sizes were directed to the parking lot. waiting for them were state inspectors, looking for mechanical defects. >> make sure they're qualified. their licenses are good. they're not wanted on warrants. then we'll go to the vehicle and do a comp hencive -- comprehensive, nuts and bolts, front to back. >> step on your brakes. >> reporter: brakes are the most common failing. >> industry has been doing a good job. we just want to try to get to the ones that don't want to do a good job. >> reporter: this inspection site is just one of hundreds across the nation. >> to make sure that they are not only complying with the law but that they operate safely on our roads. >> they stage this annual event, called road check 2013.

over the past 26 years, it has screened many trucks. >> they did a good job. >> it's holding me up a little bit. but it's something the state police and -- they do it around the country as well. it's not just here. but it's to help us stay safe. >> reporter: and if there are fixes needed, trucks don't leave until they're done. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> road check 2013 will span the next two days in other states because it takes a lot of people to pull it off. it concluded in maryland this afternoon. desire well, it may not have been as deadly or destructive as the tornado that hit moore, oklahoma. but the storm that hit elreno, oklahoma last week, is one for the record books. according to the national weather service, the tornado had a record width. overall, last friday's storm system is blamed for 18 deaths. first warning weather coverage continues with meteorologist chelsea ingram. now with a closer look at that storm. chelsea? >> thanks, denise.

this twister actually received the maximum rating allotted. an ef5. another ef5 in the state of loc loc. -- oklahoma. it's the widest tornado ever recorded on earth. two miles. that's more than half the size of the chesapeake bay bridge. its winds were knocked at around 296 miles per hour from a mobile doppler radar while it carves a 1600-mile pass. all in a period of about 40 minutes. so yes, another weather record broken. back to you guys. >> thank you very much, chelsea. time now for a quick look at some of the stories you'll find in the baltimore sun. a report from washington, where more allegations from the irs come out of a day of hearings about the agency's practices. a look at maryland's compicated relationship with the softshell crab. and houston opens in a series against the asrows --

an explosion at a new york college injures seven people and one woman out of a second- story window. it happened earlier today at nayac college. the force of the blast destroyed winds windows, pulled a door off its hinges and left several people buried in rubble. the people were taken to the hospital. their injuries are not life- threatening. it is still under investigation. a woman was gang-raped. she was hitch hiking to her guest house.

she was picked up by three men who reportedly pulled her to a secluded spot and raped her. this comes after they say a brittish tourist jumped out of the window, saying the hotel owner tried to force himself into her room. olympic track star, oscar pistorius made a brief return to court today, where the judge postponed his murder trial. the double-amputee is charged with the shooting death of his girlfriend in his south africa an home. >> reporter: oscar pistorius looked calm as he faced a barrage of photographers at his first court appearance in months. the hearing was brief. the judge postponed the 26-year- old's murder trial, until august 19th, to give the prosecution more time to prepare its case. >> reporter: the athlete known as the blade runner for his prosthetic running legs, is charged with killing his girlfriend at his home in south africa on valentine's day. prosecutors say pistorius shot reeva steenkamp, after an argument, firing four shots

see the game on masn 2. sacking the quarterback is the ultimate sign of domination by defense. certainly appreciated here in baltimore, where the ravens have long been known for defense. today, the nfl mourns the death of the man who was credited with coining the phrase, quarterback sack. deacon jones passed away, late last night of natural causes at the age of 74. jones was a fierce pass rusher from the l.a. rams from 1961 to 71. he terrorized opposing qbs. deacon jones ended his career with the washington redskins, in 1974. he was elected to the pro football hall of fame in 1980. finally, the action can get rough on the court. and tempers got hot between the miami heat and pacers. harsh words exchanged between players and fans. and in this case, the manager for rapper flo rida, was ejected from the arena. that's flo rida. he was allowed to stay in his
