bay bridge rescue. frightening moments for a worker dangling hundreds of feet above the chesapeake a bay. >> how he got there and the delicate way to get him. here's what people are talking about tonight. >> a freak accident on the bay bridge. firefighters lowered down to a blat form high in the air -- platform high in the air to save an injured worker. we're hearing the newly released emergency calls. meghan mccorkell is live with more. >> reporter: that worker was flown here to shock trauma with head and neck injuries after firefighters went to great lengths to rescue him. high in the air, nearly 200 feet

above the chesapeake bay, a daring rescue for firefighters. >> i have a rescue on the bay bridge. >> reporter: a worker on a platform beneath the bridge injured after a paint can fell and hit him in the head. >> the worker is 25 foot down from the super structure. >> reporter: the anne arundel special operations team called in to help. >> technical rope rescue is one of the areas of expertise that they have and they practice on the bridge on a regular basis. >> reporter: rescue workers were lowered down to the platform. they stabilized the patient then lifted him on a backboard back on to the road way. beach goers got a front row seat to the daring rescue. >> the helicopter came and circled and i assumed something was really wrong. >> reporter: the man was rushed by ambulance to the park where a medivac flew him to the hospital. wjz has learned the 51-year-old victim is an employee at lass

tech enterprises here in baltimore. it specializes in bridge restoration. this shut the bridge down for two hours leaving drivers with nowhere to go. >> we were parking waiting for the normal traffic for, i think for maybe an hour and a half. >> reporter: the worker is expected to survive. and both anne arundel and queen anne firefighters departments were involved in the rescue. maryland transportation authority police are now investigating the accident. violent at an orioles game. a marylander is lying in the hospital a week after fans attacked him for wearing a yankees hat. tonight his condition is deteriorating. how the community is stepping up to help. >> reporter: cell phone video captures the frightening moments after matthew fortese is sucker punched by two oriole fans at

camden yard as they took on the nationals. these two men, gregory and fleischmann, were taunting fortese throughout the game. >> they threw a beer and when they threw the beer it hit another individual. >> reporter: fortese confronts the men and he is hit and falls over the barrier. cell phone video captured the incident. two people were arrested. >> he was spitting on him. >> reporter: he remains in hospital with a fractured skull. >> these are our community night flyers we are handing out. >> reporter: he owns jimmy john's and shares a common love for the yankees. he's holding a special fundraiser that will help fortese. >> 25% of our proceeds will go to matt and his family to cover medical bills. >> it could be my kids as grow

out of the hospital. wjz was told to go away at his house in essex. >> he had a neck brace and stuff on. he's a good man. he serves the community. he volunteers at the fire department. he's been down to the fire department for a long time. >> reporter: near alban's trucking business a checkpoint remains. you can see where the accident happened. there were no lights or gates at this private train crossing. the ntsb is looking into the crossing but refused to release any updated information on the investigation. a spokesman said the federal agency would do so wednesday, including details on attempts to interview alban and a time line of events. >> if you look at this hallway now it's back to good old days. >> reporter: businesses have suffered severe damage and are making significant progress getting back on track. >> hard to believe it is the same place. >> reporter: this is the

business one week ago. now the shattered glass is gone and spirits are higher. >> to be here a week later and i know everybody is okay, this building is coming back together. it will come back. but it will be something i'll always remember. >> reporter: the ntsb says part of its review includes blood testing and a check of cell phone records for both the truck driver and the train operators. mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. . >> crews have repaired $120,000 in damage to the tracks. environmental cleanup continues on the scene. hundreds of trucks were outside dc's fedex field playing a game called road check 2013. they were directed into the parking lots of the prince george's county stadium. they were inspected for truck maintenance and driver qualifications.

the most common problems compromised brake systems. heart breaking moments for a prominent man stabbed in his home. now she speaks for the first time about the night police say hess teenage daughter tried to kill him and kill her, too. we have the emotional words from a memorial tonight. >> reporter: loved ones remember a man who was passionate about his life. the 58-year-old businessman was stabbed to death inside his home. it happened the morning of may 10th. howard county police charged 19-year-old jason ballmer with stabbing him to death but his own daughter, 14 years old, plotted the murder. she told her boyfriend to stab her father ten times in the throat. there was a memorial service for him.

it's fitting that the memorial service for dennis lane was held at the pavilion because lane was instrumental for preserving it. michael steel may be adding his name to the list candidates in the gubernatorial race. the former republican national committee chairman says he loves the idea of returning to public service. but with election day more than a year away steel says he's not in a rush to decide. the super bowl champion baltimore ravens are about to receive the presidential seal of approval. they'll travel to washington tomorrow to meet president obama. they will be commemorated with a special ceremony at the white house. ed reed and ray lewis are expected to attend. and wjz will be at the white house for the super celebration. kai jackson will lead our complete coverage. coming up, record breakers, startling new information about the destructive power of the latest tornado to hit oklahoma as the death toll grows higher.

. it is mainly clear, 61 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete forecast is coming up. a trailer accident on a florida interstate gave first responders a unique challenge. inside the trailer were four alpacas. one of the animals had a heg injury and had to -- leg injury and had to be placed on a stretcher. the driver towing the trailer was taken hospital and is in stable condition. an explosion rocked a campus at nyak college. seven people were injured including one person who was thrown from a second story window. all the injuries are nonlife threatening. a natural gas leak is the suspected cause but the investigation is ongoing. the growing scandal

surrounding the irs now includes that scathing treasury department report about overspending by the agency. it reveals that over $4 million was spent on a training conference in 2010. the irs was also under congressional scrutiny today for targeting conservative groups. the leaders of six organizations testified how they spent years trying to gain tax exempt status only to be blocked by irs agents. three top irs officials have left the agency since the scandal broke. the tornado that hit el reno, oklahoma, on friday is more powerful than experts thought. the national weather service says the tornado spanned 2.6 miles wide, making it the widest on record. they also upgraded it to an ef-5 with wind speeds of 295 miles an hour. the death toll went up to 19

today. there will be no government intervention to get a dying 10-year-old pennsylvania girl a lung transplant. health secretary kathleen sebelius says the federal profession should make those decisions. there are about 20 preadolescent lung transplants each year. the naval academy deals with aun folding sex assault case, pressure is coming from congress to stop sexual assaults in all branchs of the military. they faced tough questions on capitol hill today. >> reporter: as the u.s. naval academy deals with an investigation of three football players for sexual assault, the military system for handling sexual assault is not working and it is time for a change. >> not every single commander

later news broke that three members of the naval academy football team attacked a woman, the players went unpunished and were allowed to play football. the names of the players involved have not been released. . >> the defense department reports a 35% jump in unwanted sexual contact. in rural england they are are holding the coxwald olimpkics. kick your opponent in the shins until he or she gives up. most of the competitors have hay in their pants to deaden the blows.

higher. big batch of moisture across south florida between cuba and florida right now. heavy showers expected to move in to central florida the next 24 to 48 hours. this disturbance could become a tropical depression but it doesn't look like it will happen. but that moisture will slowly be moving up to the north and northeast. most of it off-shore. these two will combine to give a good shot rain here friday and probably even into saturday the way it looks right now. once it passes, sunday looks good. but for friday into saturday a good chance to see rain. some areas may see heavy rain. it all depends on how much of that tropical moisture can move into the region. one of the models says off-shore and we miss it. so we'll have to wait another day or so before we get that better track on what we see that tropical moisture evolving. in the mean time, pleasant temperatures, nice day tomorrow. eventually some of that moisture moving in our direction.
