super bowl celebration part 2. the ravens in a special ceremony with the president. watch as the champion team reunites at the white house. good afternoon. here's what people will be talking about today, the super bowl champion ravens are taking part in a big honor in washington dc this noon. wjz is live with them at the white house. kai jackson is watching things about to get started at this point. good afternoon, kai. >> reporter: good afternoon, don. how are you? you're looking at a live picture of the south lawn of the white house. we're out here today as the president obama gets ready to congratulate the baltimore ravens on their bowl xlvii victory. it was quite an exciting time. this is a live picture of the south lawn. now, the ceremony takes place out here today on a glorious day in washington dc. very pretty. they beat the 49ers on february 3rd. it's a game that will be

remembered for the lights going out as it will for the final score. san francisco got energized after that happen but the ravens hung onto win. it's being noted for the people that aren't here as much as the people that are. the ravens are concerned with the team having the chance to meet the president and being congratulated by him. we know that ray lewis will be here today. also ed reid is here. today the president will be meeting and shaking hands with the ravens. tomorrow it's back to work for the baltimore ravens. they are ota or organized team activities tomorrow in owings mills. they have a big event coming up this friday. that's the ring ceremony. their rings are finally in. members of the team will get their super bowl rings. this is the second visit for the baltimore ravens to the white house. they were here in 2001

after they meet the new york giants. this team, 17-year franchise history, two super bowl victories. not bad. i'm kai jackson reporting looif. ing live. at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00 we have a secret for you. >> interesting. looking at the small crowd i thought there would be more purple. stay with wjz now and at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00 for the ravens visit. for the latest pictures you can go to cbsbaltimore.com. now the baseball fan attacked at an orioles game remains in critical condition this noon. they say matthew fortese was targeted because he was wearing yankees gear. two men are charged with first and second degree assault. the orioles have not commented on the altercation in any fashion. we're learning more about the contractor who had to be rescued off a cat walk just under the bay bridge road surface. mike schuh is live in the news room with the latest.

>> reporter: the 51-year-old is an employee at blastech in baltimore. the company specializes in bridge restoration. he was taken to shock trauma with serious injuries after a paint can fell and hit him on the head while working on the bay bridge. it was a tough rescue for crews who had to get him off the cat walk 200 feet above the chesapeake bay. they used a rope rescue. that shut down the bay bridge for hours. >> the anne arundel and queen anne's county fire departments were involved in that rescue. they continue to investigate the incident. funeral services are underway for frank lauthenberg. services for the long-time senator are in new york city. his body will be taken to dc where he will lie this repose in the senate chamber before he's buried at arlington national

cemetery on friday. they will name a replacement this week and then a special election will be held in october. in dc the president is shaking up his inner circle. as danielle nottingham reports for wjz, he's about to announce a new security advisor later this afternoon. >> president obama will name susan rice his next national security advisor today. she replaces tom donalin. it's likely to create waives with republicans. she's been at the center over the controversy over the terrorist attack in libya. rice described the violence in interviews as a protest over an antiislam video. she was relying on talking points from the intelligence community. >> we learned from those e-mails that the white house has put forward that rice wasn't in

the middle of those talking points that became such a big deal. that doesn't mean her being named won't kick up a lot of political reaction. >> president obama considered nominating rice to replace hilary clinton as secretary of state. rice with drew her name once republicans made clear she would not be confirmed. >> rice did not need senate approval for this next appointment. the president will also name former white house advisor samantha power to take rice's u.n. post. donalin will be national security advisor until early july and will play a key role in the president's trip to africa and europe and the senate in california with the president of china. >> rice first started working for the president during his 2008 campaign. we're going back to the white house right now. the ravens are coming down the steps of the trueman porch behind the white house getting ready for a big ceremony. we're taking a break and coming right back.

the ceremony will be with the president. first everybody will be put into place. the white house staff and the rest of the media will be put in place. i'm trying to look through the faces there. i have a different aspect to try to pick out the players. we know ray rice is going to be there. he tweeted so this morning. we zoom back in to the picture and go live to kai on the phone.

show off the trophy. during the year they lost player after player to injury, dropped the last 4 out of 5 regular season games. in the playoffs they trailed denver by a touchdown with 70 yards and less than a minute to go. i still don't know how -- well. >> [laughter] >> then in the super bowl just when it looked like they had the momentum the lights went out for a half hour. these ravens always pulled through. in that playoff game against the broncos, jacoby jones -- >> [cheers] >> -- those are all fans of dancing with the stars. he flip slipped behind the defense to catch a joe flacco hail mary to force over time.

i'm trying to figure out whether he was doing the two-step or foxtrot. somehow he got open and joe got him the ball. in the super bowl after the lights came back and the 49ers came storming back this team's defense, the pride and joy of baltimore, stopped a fierce offense four straight times inside the 10 yard line on the most dramatic goal line stance in super bowl history. joe was named the game's mvp. >> [cheers] >> where's joe? there he is. >> [cheers] >> e asy, joe. >> good timing with that contract up. >> [laughter] >> that was some good timing. capped off one of the great est post seasons ever by a quarterback. more than 1,100 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, no

interceptions. i don't know about you joe, but i'd say that qualifies as elite. >> [cheers] >> if you keep cheering like that you're going to challenge biden for the post popular person for delaware. after the win joe said we're a blue collar city and i know we had to keep grinding it out. you see that same attitude, great pride but humility in coach harbaugh. he's a guy who responds to all the attention he got for coaching against his brother in the super bowl by saying this isn't exactly churchill and roosevelt, just a couple of football coaches coming together. you see that grit in team advisor, o.j., he has

fought against als and is an inspiration to all americans across the country. you see that resilience in players like torrey smith who lost his younger brother in a motorcycle accident but he wanted to play and he responded with 127 yards and two scores. we're so proud of torrey. then of course you can't think about baltimore without thinking of ray lewis and ed reid, two of the greatest defenders who ever played the game. these two won't be wearing purple next year. everybody is going to have to get used to that. it's welcome news for quarterbacks. ray retired on top, coming back from a trisep injury, which i believe was caused by that dance he does. >> [laughter] >> no, i'm not doing that dance. >> dance. >> caused him to miss most of

the regular season. ed sprained ligaments in the super bowl. before he left houston, where he will play next year, he took out an ad telling the fans, i have such deep love for all of you. that's class a. >> [cheers] >> i will point out that ed is getting gray hair though, i'm not the only one. you're like an old man. >> you know that. >> i'm telling you. that makes me feel better. i thought i was the only guy. >> oh, no. >> no. all right . but that's the spirit of the entire team. last year this team donated more than $1 million to charitable causes. they helped young people get active through the play 60 campaign. over thanksgiving they skyped with the maryland national a guard

unit stationed in afghanistan. later this month coach harbaugh will host a youth football clinic. today i'm proud to announce that the ravens will be donated brand new uniforms for varsity football and girl's basketball teams for all the schools across baltimore. that's 42 teams. we're happy to have some athletes here to celebrate with us here today. this year baltimore won't be just seeing the ravens on sunday or monday night or thursday night, you'll see their impact in high school under friday night lights. that's a testimony to the connection they feel to this city. you'll see players spending their tuesdays, normally their only day off in the season, visiting hospitals and schools and senior centers and day after day you will see a team that loves baltimore as much as baltimore loves the ravens. i want to thank all of you for the good work that you're doing.
