sternoid suspension. major league baseball gets ready to crack down on more than a dozen players, tied to a performance-enhancing drug ring. >> hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. it is expected to be an unprecedented wave of players, including yankees star alex rodriguez. the athletes are allegedly linked to a clinic at the center of a performance- enhancing drugs scandal. >> reporter: cbs news has learned that 25 major league baseball players are now being investigated for performance- enhancing drugs. some who have not been involved in past drug scandals. they're suspected of buying drugs from a sports clinic in miami. tony bosh, founder of

biogenesis, will take an oath before telling investigators everything he knows. bosh reportedly said he would speak after they said they would drop the lawsuit against him. >> i assume i know why everybody is here. >> braun refused to talk about the allegations wednesday night. and wednesday morning, yankees manager said he had not talked to rodriguez since the story broke. rodriguez is recovering from hip surgery am. >> my focus is not on what nfl is investigating and all of that. and i don't want to get caught up in all of that. >> reporter: the latest doping allegations were a hot topic before the game here at yankees stadium. >> i'm just happy to see baseball really taking a hard position against it. and i hope for once, it's really cleaned up and all of that garbage is out of the sport. >> i'm a little disappointed. because they're pretty much the role models for kids like me. >> reporter: evidence against the players will be hard to

come by. sources say that they did not always have direct contact with the athlet'ses he sold to. in new york, marlie hall, wjz eyewitness news. >> and the head of the players commission said the mlb commissioner is assuring no disciplinary action will will be taken until the investigation is complete. a trip to the white house. wjz continues to bring you complete coverage of the ravens visit with president obama. kai jackson has more on today's celebration. what a day out there, kai. >> o, mary. it was a phenomenal day. it was a wonderful 79 degrees here in the capital. president obama congratulates the baltimore ravens on winning super super bowl xlvii. people were all smiles from baltimore and maryland.

i want you to know we have plans to be back next year. >> reporter: dozens of baltimoreans and marylanders attended. including a number of elected leaders who say the win was much bigger than one game. >> just having the ravens here at the white house, i think, just makes all of us on the baltimore region very excited. and it puts our city back on the map once again. >> yeah, there was a great deal of excitement out here today. and i'll tell you what, i was really impressed with the number of marylanders and baltimoreans here today. as you saw in that video, john harbaugh, and general manager ozzie newsome presented the president with his own jersey. it said mr. president on the back, number 44. because he saturday 44th president of the united states. the president excited and of course, off to other business, immediately after that ceremony. back to you. >> put that bears jersey away and wear the ravens. >> he talked about the bears. >> i know. we heard him.

thanks, kai. we'll see you in a bit. new at 4:30, we'll hear president obama praise the ravens for what they have accomplished off the field. that is coming up more with kai. turning to other news today, at least one person is dead in philadelphia, after a four-story building collapses. 12 people are hurt. and workers are working to rescue others. >> crews worked frantically to rescue people in philadelphia. at least one person is dead. 13 others rescue. it took firefighters hours to reach some of the victims. >> the biggest challenge is getting people with tons of rubble on top of folks. getting them disentangle and extreicated. >> late wednesday morning, it collapsed onto an ajacent salvation army thrift store, trapping people inside. witnesses instantly became

rescuers. >> we went over to the building. we said, can you hear us? can you hear us? and we tried to find the people. personally, i tried to pull out, too. >> reporter: he said he could feel the building coming down. >> you felt it shake. there was people that actually fell over. >> reporter: firefighters conducted a hands-only search for the first hour after the building collapsed. they used buckets to move bricks and search dogs to locate people who were trapped. ambulances rushed victims to area hospitals for treatment. city officials say crews are digging through the debris, to make sure no one is still trapped. >> we did not know and we do not know how many people were actually in that store when the wall collapsed on the building. >> reporter: crews are working to stabilize what is left of the salvation army store so they can get to the basement and finish their search. vinita nair, wjz eyewitness news. >> and firefighters say the injured people are being

treated for minor injuries. president obama is shaking up his security team. susan rice, the current u.s. ambassador to the united nations is taking over as national security adviser in july, when tom donaldson steps down. republicans have accused rice of being part of the cover-up of the ben ghazi attacks in libya. it is another dry, sunny, gorgeous spring day. here's a live look at the blue skies, with very few clouds out there. it is mild and comfortable. and the water looks blue and inviting. wjz has weather and traffic together. we'll talk to kristy in a second. but tim williams is up first with the weather forecast. >> good afternoon, everyone. it is a gorgeous day, as mary mentioned. we've had these days just a little below the average, which is now normal, 80 degrees. light winds and a lot of sunshine. it's just been a delightful stretch. and it's going to be coming coming to an end here very soon. we're at 70 degrees now at bwi

marshall. 67 with the influence of the water on the shore. 77 in elkton. 70 in oakland. and a dew point of 45, keeping the air pretty dry, as we move into this afternoon. we do have that pit of a marine influence. more humidity. but the cooler air coming in off the water. that's what is keeping that temperature down off the shore, at 67. but what you see ought to the west, well, that is a front moving in our general direction. while we have clear skies right now, look at what is down to our south. that is going to start pulling in some of this rain and moisture. it's going to start pulling it off the coastline. help to facilitate showers as we move on through the afternoon and through thursday. parts of central maryland may not see much. but part of the shore could see a whole lot. we'll talk about just how much we may see in the terms of rainfall, coming up in your complete first warning forecast. out to our roads now. here's kristy breslin at wjz traffic control. well, what we're seeing on the roads out there is definitely slowing along northbound 95. the first delay there from the 895 split, over to whitemarsh

alex demetrick reports, it's a step on the road to statehood for mother mary lang. >> the sisters of providence, welcome the remains of mother mary lang. a woman of african descent, who started the first black order in baltimore in 1989. not an easy task in what was then a slave state. >> she had many, many obstacles. among them, racial, prejudice, and hatred. and her love overcame that in her life. and the archdiocese believes that love may elevate her to st. mary lang. the next step is moving her remains from a baltimore cemetery to a place where pilgrims and visit and pray. >> oh, blessed god [ inaudible

the s&p is down 21. and nasdaq is down 42. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> stocks fell sharply after new reports pointed to a sluggish economy. the payroll company, adp, says u.s. businesses added just 135,000 jobs in may. it's the second straight month of weak gains. and orders to u.s. factories were also weaker than expected. the federal reserve's latest assessment of the economy shows moderate growth through much of the country. april try mid-may. and some reported moderate to modest growth. while dallas said they had strong growth. rising mortgage rates have homeowners thinking twice about refinancing. for the first time in a year, rates have climbed above 4%. that led to a drop last week in applications to refinance. and the long-awaited blackberry, with physical

keyboard, is finally available in the u.s. the rollout comes months after the touch-screen version went on sale. t-mobile began selling the blackberry q10 today. the touch-only z10 went on sale earlier this year. but many long-time blackberry users prefer a physical keyboard. that's your money watch. for more, head to cbsmoneywatch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. sometimes a stiff neck is more than just a pain in the neck. sometimes, it is a condition called degenerative disc disease of the cervical spine. denise is live in studio b, as we ask the experts about this important topic. good afternoon, denise. >> hi, mary. how are you doing? i'm here with mr. dan jarems, who is here with the university of maryland and st. joseph's medical center. we are talking about degenerative disc disease and back and neck pain. when should we seek treatment? when is it something really serious? >> well, we all -- everyone at

some point in their lives, will get a bad episode of neck or lower back pain. it usually goes away in a couple of days on its own. ice, heat, rest. but if it doesn't, after about a week, you probably ought to seek attention. the other major concern is if it turns into pain going down the arm, numbness and tingling going down the fingers. numbness or tingling in the foot. then we think it's a pinched disc or lumbar nerve. we thinka it is putting pressure on the nerve. >> so the rule is after about a week, it may be something more complicated? what is degenerative disc disease? that sounds like more than just wearing it out. >> yes. that is often passed down in families. but also as we get older, the discs, the shock absorbers, wear out. and they can bulge and put pressure on nerves. that can be addressed by

surgery, taking pressure directly off the nerve. that can be successful. in fact, most of the people who get surgery with leg or arm pain, wake up in the recovery room with no more leg or arm pain. but most of my patients, i go help get better without surgery. >> how? >> physical therapy is one of the things we do. very effective. hot packs, massage, electrical stimulation. if the pain is severe and continues, we can send people for epidural steroid injections. like getting a cortisone shot in the knee. can help calm do you think the symptoms in the legs. >> terrific. you can see the phones ringing behind us. a lot of people have back pain and neck pain. the experts will be here all afternoon. back to you, mary. >> denise, thank you. we're going to give that phone number 1 more time, if you suffer from back pain, arthritis, back, knee, her hip pain. standing by to answer all your

team. ravens being acknowledged by the president today. they had a wonderful day to be able to do that. out on, i think the south lawn. am i correct, mary? south lawn. and it's a nice day shaping up. we are all under the same skies. we're looking at a nice, clear afternoon shaping up. 78 degrees here. 80 degrees in d.c. 45, the dew point, with dry air in place. and east/southeasterly wind at 9 miles per hour. 30.11. barometer is in place. pretty high right now issue as high pressure is still dominating our forecast, at least through tonight. 78 degrees right now is just a little bit off of our normal high. the normal is 80 for our area for this date. 68 out in oakland. 67 down in ocean city. out in oakland, we're seeing the influence of the front that is moving in. the shore is seeing the influence of the cooler air being pushed in off of the atlantic. a bit of a marine influence there. so two different reasons for why the temperatures are in the 60s at both ends the of the

state. 78 in bel air. 75 in annapolis and kent island. and those winds coming in from the east/southeast, across much of the area. and then a 13-mile-per-hour wind in oakland, is one of the higher winds. we'll expect the winds to likely increase tomorrow, ahead of the front that is moving in our general direction. this is what we're watching. several different things. one, an area of low pressure down around florida. this is a disturbance that we're expecting that could take some tropical -- or start to form in a tropical characteristics, develop. some tropical characteristics over the next few days or so. and that is likely to be pulled up by the front moving in from the west. and that one is going to start to bring some rain. the combination of those two, the front moving on in. pulling in that moisture from the gulf, could likely bring us some very heavy rainfall, tomorrow night, into friday. and then lingering through about saturday afternoon. the combination of all of that moisture. and then this front could bring some drenching downpours and very heavy rain. thunderstorms lingering through. tomorrow could bring, again some of that heavy rain.

the winds will likely pick up as well. we'll keep an eye on that as it starts to get closer. but just know that tomorrow into friday, and friday into saturday afternoon, that is the optimum time for heavy rain. and again, thunderstorms and thundershowers could be mixed in with that system. 8:29 is your sunset time. winds are from the east at 5 to 10 knots. there are no advisories in effect. what we're going to be watching over the next few days, well, temperatures are going to be in the range of about 77 degrees tomorrow. midseptszs, we'll call it. but look for a bit of a change and definitely wet weather, heading into the early part of the weekend. >> too bad. it's been so nice, the last couple of days. we get spoiled. >> yes. >> all right, tim. thank you. don't miss tonight's cbs primetime lineup. it's the original csi, followed by eyewitness news at 11:00. and there is lots more ahead on wjz at 4:30. the world champion ravens reunite today for a celebration at the white house.

i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. >> the super bowl champion ravens get a big congratulations at the white house today. wjz is live there. kai jackson has more there on the ceremony. hello, kai. >> hi, denise. how are you? it was a wonderful ceremony out here today in washington, d.c. that ceremony was held on the south lawn of the white house. there were a number of poignant moments out here today, regarding the ups and downs of the ravens, a season that really was emotional. and president obama made reference to those moments, not the least of which, of course, was the team's record. didn't have the best record in the nfl. they went 10-6 in the regular season. while they didn't have the best record, it was clear they were

fighters. that resilience came through in torrey smith. one of the ravens' star wide receivers. his younger brother, kevin, was killed the day before new the ravens played the patriots. >> last year, this team donated more than $1 million to charitable causes. they helped people get active through the play 60 campaign. over thanksgiving, they skyped with the maryland national guard unit, stationed in afghanistan. later this month, coach harbaugh will host a youth football clinic that emphasizes player safety and proper tackling technique. and today, i'm proud to announce that the ravens will be donating brand new uniforms for varsity football teams at high schools across the area, 42 teams. >> president obama made reference to the

uniforms they will donate. this team get its. in fact, if you'll remember, after the ravens won the super bowl in new orleans, they donated motorcycles to the new orleans police department. so this team certainly understands community involvement. that means obviously that community involvement in baltimore. but they gave back in new orleans, a city obviously still dealting with a lot of pain in the aftermath of hurricane katrina, some years later. >> thank you very much, kai. we invite you to stay with wjz at 5:00 and 6:00. for complete coverage of the ravens visit to the white house. for the latest pictures, go to cbsbaltimore.com. 40,000 people gather in houston, texas, to say goodbye to four fallen firefighters. the first responders died, answer their last call at a motel and restaurant fire last week. colleagues say they ran into the burning building to save people they thought were trapped. it's now the deadliest fire, the houston fire department's 118-year history. the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. a daring rescue on the bay bridge. after a contractor is seriously injured on the job.

monique griego got a hands-on look at how anne arundel county fire's technical rescue team got the man to safety. these types of rescues take a loot of training and are extremely technical. so the crew showed us exactly how they get it done. >> reporter: when a contractor was injured, 200 feet above the chesapeake bay, while working on the bridge, getting him to safety wasn't easy. it took a group of firefighters from anne arundel county, with a special set of skills. they're known as technical rescue. >> this is what we would call high-angle rope rescue. >> captain chen, who did similar rescues in the past, had his team show us just how intricate and dangerous these types of calls can be. it takes a lot of training and equipment to get the job done. >> we're simulating. this is the bridge deck that we're standing on. and the bridge railing there. >> i got the blue one here. >> reporter: technical rescue handles everything outside the normal fire and medical calls. that includes

>> that's it. >> confined spaces. hazardous materials, and high- angle re -- rescues. >> yesterday, a different set of team members secured the worker beneath the bridge and brought him to the road level. today, i got to be the victim, as firefighters lifted me to safety, as part of their ongoing training. >> any day could be the day that we go to a call like this. so we have to be ready all the time. >> reporter: after being rescued, an ambulance took the injured worker to a waiting helicopter. >> that's what we train for and what we hope for. to protect lives and help people in their time of need. >> you know, it's good feeling that everybody worked together and got it done. >> reporter: monique griego, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the rescued contractor worker suffered injuries to his head and his neck. some residents of missouri are scrambling to get to higher ground. the levee, where the rivers come together is breached as the pounding rains fall across the midwest. 40 homes near west alton are in jeopardy. residents are putting in

sandbags and doing what they can to keep the rising waters out. many remain under water, making travel difficult in the area. it was another picture perfect day right here. a live look outside right now. we have mostly sunny skies with the low humidity. making for another pleasant afternoon. wjz has weather and traffic together. meteorologist chelsea ingram is here now with the updated numbers from first warning weather. chelsea? >> we are sitting around normal. maybe 2 degrees below now. 77, elkton. 80 in washington. that humidity is very low. dew points only at around 45 degrees right now. and thursday, whether is -- weather is going to start to change this. is going to be our transitional period. we'll start bringing more humidity into the region. and slight chance of rainfall, especially in areas western maryland. it's all going to change, though, as we head into your friday. we're watching an area of low pressure, down near the caribbean, gulf, and florida. and that's expected to right on up the coast. and i can tell you right now, the potential for the heaviest

rainfall for us and any flash flooding potential is going to be friday and friday night. but wherever that access of heavy rainfall sets up, that's all going to depend on the track of this area of low pressure and its interaction with the trough headed our way, out from the west. and we'll talk more coming up, in your complete first warning weather forecast. back to you. >> thank you, chelsea. let's check on the roads with kristy breslin at traffic control. hi, denise. hi, everyone. very busy afternoon out there. starting with the top side inner loop. delays stretching there from the jones falls expressway to harford road. west side inner loop, just bumper to bumper, from 95 past 70. speaking of 70, problems on 70, in both direction. westbound from 29 to bethany lane. and eastbound towards the beltway. as far as 95 goes, that continues to be a struggle, from 32 over to 100. and then again, that delay has expanded. it's now from 395 past the beltway on the northeast corner. as far as accidents go, evans chapel at 40 west. park heights at glen guile.

baby contest. and this picture resulted in tamari winning the overall prize. >> i knew it was to help children with cancer. we had a lot of cancer in the family. it was a personal, as well as let her have fun. >> reporter: this mom also had fun with her boy, micah. he won a different category. the photo shoot costs $35. and it's 35 cents a vote. the public helps determine the winners. >> it's always good. you know where the money is going. >> reporter: last year, $13,000 was raised for the hopkins children's cancer center. 5-year-old courtney redding won with these categories. >> i like the aspect that although your children raised something in the end, you raised a lot of money for a great cause. and you hope your child needs to go to the hospital. but if it is, you want it to be a hospital that has everything they need. >> reporter: this year's photo shoot is thursday through sunday at the marley station mall. >> it strikes me in this case,

was shot by two men when he really accidentally shot himself. she is expected to be sentenced for two years. one-time family member of the charles manson family, leslie houton. today in court, she gave unprecedented testimony about committing the crimes alongside manson. she was the youngest member of the clan and was convicted of murder and conspiracy in the 1969 killings of leonard and rosemary labianca in their home in california. a judge has not yet rendered a decision about her parole. for the first time, we are hearing the voice of the surviving boston bombing suspect. as bob or reports, dzokhar's mother said she recorded a conversation with him last week. >> reporter: it is the first time since the twin explosions on boylston street, the world has heard from 19-year-old suspect, dzokhar tsarnaev. in a brief conversation, taped on his mother's cell phone, the accused bomber tried to calm his family, and urged them not

to discuss his case. everything is good, he said, please don't say anything. she says her son spoke to her last week, from a prison hospital in massachusetts. he's there recuperating from multiple gunshot wounds. received in a shootout with police in watertown. she asked dzokhar if he was in pain. [ speaking in foreign language ] >> reporter: no, of course, not, dzokhar says. i'm already eating and have been for a long time. they're giving me rice and chicken now. everything is fine. >> reporter: for zabedda, her son's calm came as a surprise. >> i thought he would scream, what's going on, you know? he would ask the world, what's going on. but mama -- instead, he was just calming me down. you know what i mean? >> reporter: tsarnaev has been granted one call per month to his parents in dagat stan.

tsarnaev has stopped cooperating with fbi and federal prosecutors. but sources say before being read his rights, he did confess to the bombings. dzokhar said he and his brother tamerlan wanted to avenge the killing of muslims by u.s. troops overseas. a similar claim had been found written on the boat dzokhar had used as a hiding place before he was captured. >> he has already been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction. and more charges are coming. they may push for the death penalty. photos of the sandy hook massacre may be prevented from being released. >> reporter: lawmakers are worried the crime scene photos and videos will wind up on the internet if they're released. they're working on a law that would apply to all homicides, not just the sandy hook massacre. the bill creates a new exemption, under the state's freedom of information act.

a sense because he had on a purple tie today. because he still favors the chicago bears, which, of course, is where he's from. back to you. >> thanks, kai. it was a beautiful day there. beautiful day here. so far, temperatures still on the climb. we're sitting in the upper 70s right now across the region. 78 in baltimore. 80 degrees in washington. and 78 also in bel air. and mid-70s in rock hall and kent island, 75 degrees right now. winds anywhere from around 5 to 10 miles -- 10 miles per hour across the region. 9 there in baltimore. 9 also in washington. we'll expect these winds to pick up. but not until we head into tomorrow afternoon. here's the big picture of what's going on in satellite and radar. we're watching two things right now. area down near florida and gulf. also a wave of energy. area of low pressure. and out to the west. these are going to come together, but not until next couple of days. i'll tell you what you can expect, so far, are the wettest timed time periods with these two systems to be your friday

and friday night, as well as potential for saturday morning. now, how much rain are we going to get? that's all going to be determined based off of the track of that area of low pressure coming up from the gulf. but right now, high pressure is still holding on to control. but it's going to be slipping off the coast here as we head into the overnight hours. we'll see clouds on the increase. today through your friday, we'll increase those chances for rainfall as we head into, especially thursday afternoon. and those chances will increase, from western maryland, all the way to the eastern shore, throughout the daytime. then that area of low pressure from the west will push into the region on friday. that's going to give us our first chance of rainfall. then more chances will come, depending on where that area of low pressure tracks as it comes up the east coast. 71 degrees on the bay right now. winds out of the east at 5 to 10 knots. here's what you can expect for tonight. temperatures around 59 degrees. partly cloudy. and that's right around normal for this time of year. we'll continue to increase those clouds as we head into tomorrow. actually, temperatures are going to be just a few degrees
