father's day shooting. a man is shot in church by a member of his own family. parishioners scared for their lives. police search for answers tonight. good evening. that is what people are talking about tonight. heart break in a utah community after a father is killed at church. his son-in-law at the center of the violence. tonight police are still searching for clues. [ bells ]. >> no one is immune from evil. >> reporter: it all just happened so fast. >> he came in and shot one of my

parishioners. >> reporter: police say 35-year-old charles richard jennings walked up to man believed to be his father-in-law and shot him in the head. >> people were rattled. >> reporter: parishioners jumped into action despite their shock. some immediately went to the victim's aid while others took off after the suspect. >> we got a lot of military and prior military here in the parish stow i think the training shows. >> reporter: the priest is asking parishioners to pray for the victim but that's not all. >> and also the assailant and pray for the rest of us because it's kind of scary. >> no one else was injured in that shooting. closer to home, a cecil county family prepares to bury a 10-year-old girl who police say was raped and murdered by a family friend. now child abuse prevention advocates are hoping other families can learn from this horrible tragedy. we're live, derek valcourt has more on the case and the man accused with the crime.

>> reporter: experts say it's no surprise that kami ring knew her accused killer this. they say that's what happens in 90% of the child abuse cases. >> reporter: kami ring was the apple of her family's eye and their lives have been shattered. dna proves ring's rapist and killer was richard madden. >> kami called her grandparents, they were well intended but nobody knows who rich hard madden was. >> reporter: cases like this underscores the importance of asking tough questions before leaving children around anyone who isn't a family member. >> i doubt in a case like this someone goes from perfectly safe and sweet and naive to murdering a child. and that along the way, people are going to start wondering what else had happened here and how else this individual had acted along the way. >> reporter: many family friends

missing kayaker comes to a tragic end. a body was recovered. he had been kayaking with a friend when he fell into the water and didn't resurface. police have not released the man's name. under fire for two weeks now the national security agency is defending its datly collection program with a new document released to congress. chip reed has more. >> reporter: the national security agency collects phone records on tens of millions of americans but a document sent by top intelligence officials to congress this weekend says fewer than 300 people were identified through the program last year and all of them were suspected of having ties to foreign terrorist organizations. releasing that information is part of an effort by the obama administration to alleviate fears about the nsa surveillance

program. >> does the president feel that he is violated the privacy of any american? >> he does not. >> reporter: he was asked about assertions by edward snowden the former contractor who admits he leaked information on the programs to the media. >> he claimed, for example, he could listen in on anybody's conversation including the president's. >> incorrect. >> did he overstate his ability to do these things? >> it's surely my view he did. >> reporter: he said the nsa surveillance programs were supported by bipartisan majorities in congress. >> it's legal, i think it comports with the constitution and it does protect and save american lives. >> that was chip reed reporting. intelligence officials now claim the surveillance programs have disrupted dozens of potential terrorists attacks but privacy advocates says the government is collecting more information than necessary. more talk today about the

condition of former south african president nelson mandela. reports say he is currently in critical but stable condition suffering from a recurring lung infection. to turkey now where clashes between protesters and police continue to erupt in the capital city of ankara. . [ sirens ]. >> police in riot gear fired smoke canisters and pepper spray while water cannons were deployed. the violence heated up saturday after police stormed the park at the heart of two weeks of protests pushing more people out. we're learning about a commercial flight from cairo to new york that was diverted because of a threat on board. it was rerouted to scotland by fighter jets after a passenger discovered a letter in the

bathroom threatening to set the plane on fire. police say there have been no arrests. they're still trying to determine who wrote that note. the plane was carrying about 300 passengers to jfk airport. >> it was really scary. it was really scary to be sitting on the plane and the flight crew told us that there was a note that was found in the bathroom with a pen that was a bomb threat. to be sitting on the plane and thinking at any given time the plane could blow up. >> passengers were stuck on board for hours after the emergency landing. they were not allowed to continue to their destinations. interviews are still being conducted. police in northwest baltimore are investigating a fatal stabbing along north rosedale street. the victim, jamal digs, was found with several cuts to his body. he later died at a hospital. at this point police have no suspect or motive in this case. a huge fire in the city

heaves one firefighter injured tonight. this one happened in the 1600 block of calhoun street. investigators say the flames ripped through an apartment leaving several families displaced. one firefighter was treated for nonlife threatening injuries. the cause of the blaze is still under investigation. a new season is just months away and as the ravens gear up, fans will see tougher security at m & t bank stadium this fall. it is a new policy handed down from the nfl after the boston marathon bombings. >> reporter: the bombing taught valuable lessons to security teams around sporting events. one of them was ban the backpacks. this week the nfl announced it is getting rid of all backpacks in the stands and that goes for ravens fans. >> it's about public safety,

it's about the safety of the fans and it's about speed. >> reporter: coolers, brief cases and seat cushions are also out. raven spokesman chad field says only clear see-through bags and clutch purses are allowed now. the new rules will help the fans get into the stadium faster. >> we want to alleviateville people coming in with the wrong things. >> i'm ex-military and i feel that they're doing everything that they need to do to keep the country safe. >> i'm okay with the clear bag. i mean, i can buy a clear bag and that's all right. >> for three hours you can do without a lot of things to go so a game for the safety of everybody. >> reporter: the nfl and the ravens will team up to launch a campaign to educate fans.

. it's mostly cloudy and 76 degrees here in central maryland right now. your complete forecast is coming up. nonstop rain this weekend is taking a heavy toll on people in india, surging flood waters washed away entire homes as the monsoon rages across 2/3 of the country. although the rains were heavier than expected emergency officials say advanced warning helped many people evacuate hoe lying areas before the storm hit. people in colorado are anxious to return home as firefighters extinguish the black forest wildfire. workers spent today dealing with the remaining hot spots from the blaze that scorched 22 square miles over the hast week. nearly 500 homes have been burned, at least two people were killed. although some residents returned home today, firefighters say they won't lift all the evacuation orders until the area is safe. federal investigators are on scene of another deadly explosion at a chemical plant in

louisiana. part of the plant remains shut down tonight as crews examine the scene. investigators say a blast inside the nitrogen plant killed a worker saturday. it's the second blast at the louisiana chemical plant in the last four days. two workers were killed in a fire in gyzmar. no word on what caused either explosion. an illinois inmate begins a new lease on life years after she was sentenced to die. paula cooper was sent to death row after being convicted ever brutally murdering an elderly bible teacher. years later it was her victim's old family that lobbied to save her life. after 28 years in prison she will be released tomorrow. supporters say her victim would want her to have a second chance. >> i believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that my grandmother would have had love and compassion for this girl ton death row. i think every good thing she does will bring honor to my

grandmother. >> that man, bill pelletier. says he will be there to greet cooper when she is released tomorrow. baltimore city police are looking for a suspect in the shooting of a man on charles street early friday morning. few leads have turned up. now police have asking for your help. tim williams has more. >> reporter: the watchful eyes of believe are once again on charles village after a man is shot. >> four to five males exited the dark buick on charles street and they shot the victim one time in the chest. >> reporter: it happened outside the radio station wypr. >> it's disconcerting because we live up the street but expected in baltimore. >> reporter: at hast check the victim remains in critical condition. >> the shooter is described as

gunshot words. no word on what sparked the violence, no arrests have been made. on a lighter note, hundreds of fathers and other family members spent father's day putting their running shoes to good use. it was held in towson. the money generated goes right to the people who need it the most at the neonatal center. >> what great morning to be out this. >> yeah. wasn't too bad. actually turned out to be a pleasant day. but the clouds rolled in really fast especially as we head into the afternoon. temperatures are sitting on the comfortable side right now. a little humidity out there, though. we're at 76 right now in baltimore. we topped out at 85 today at bwi marshal and it's those areas in southern maryland and over on the eastern shore that have been hanging on to the warmer temperatures throughout the day today. but they saw a little bit more sunshine than the rest of us

thought the day. winds are out of the east of baltimore, 8 miles an hour, 3 miles an hour in the dc area. on satellite and radar, we're watching this area of clouds and precipitation. it's all associated with low pressure and it's going to continue to affect our weather in the next couple of days. along with low pressure up towards our north. but we'll start to dry out as we head into the overnight hours. a few scattered showers and thunderstorms moving through southern maryland and over in the ocean city area. again, like i said, those are the location that is saw more sunshine today so they have the energy to fuel those showers. but we had all dry out heading into the overnight hours. tonight through tuesday. here are things are going to play out. cold front move through as we head into tomorrow, and then by tuesday this is what we'll be looking at. cold front hoecated up towards our north and an area of hoe pressure down towards the south. these two features had provide us with a good chance of thunderstorm activity and shower activity, especially on tuesday

afternoon, but we'll be fine tuning the forecast and the possibility of strong thunderstorms for tuesday afternoon. bay temperatures around 74 degrees, winds out of the southwest tomorrow around 5 to 10 knots. and tonight, 67 degrees, mostly cloudy skies. most of us will be drying out. 89 tomorrow, a few degrees warmer. partly sunny and humid, you'll notice the humidity as we head into your monday. and we'll keep that thunderstorm again possible during the afternoon but it's going to be more likely as we head into your tuesday. here is what the next five days look like. 84 by tuesday with showers and thunderstorms more likely. wednesday sunshine had return once we get that area of hoe pressure out of here. 81 on wednesday. friday 86 degrees and we'll keep the sunshine in the forecast through the weekend as well. back to you. coming up next in sports,

. the orioles wrap up their four-game series with the boston red sox before a big father's day crowd at camden yard. actor richard gear threw out the first pitch. as for the game itself, in the 3rd inning the orioles are heeding 1-0 when rush davis does it again. he hit his major league leading 23rd home run of the year. it gives the orioles are 3-0 lead. it's the 100th home run of davis' career. ma chadda drives home markakis.

the orioles win 6-3 to move back to 1.5 games back of first mace. >> it's huge any time a division rival comes in and you get a chance to gain ground you want to take as many games you can. especially these guys are in first place so we wanted to do as much as we could. >> the 1-0 delivery. >> the orioles are back on the road for a series against the tigers tomorrow night. the u.s. open golf game, phil mickelson has the heed going into today. things started off good. second shot on the par 4 tenth hole. hands perfectly, rolls into the cup for an eagle. on the 13th hole, justin rose had this long putt for birdie and that gives him the lead.

mickelson had one last shot on 18. he needs in to go in to tie rose. it rolls by the cup. mickelson finishes second for the sixth time at the open. justin rose is the champion. to the nba finals now, with the spurs and the heat battled in game five in san antonio. it was back and forth all night but the spurs outside shooting proved to be the difference maker. a big night for danny green as he breaks the nba record for most 3-pointers in a final series. the team wins 114-104. the spurs take a 3-2 lead in the series. game six is tuesday back in south beach. still to come, shocking spotting. the massive mammal spotted off the coast, next. ,,,,,,
