for a meeting with seven other leaders of the world's top economic powers, but while the event is aimed at discussing world trade and what to do about the ailing economy, the two-year war in syria is expected to dominate. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. security is tight at the lakeside golf resort where this summit is being held. along with syria, another topic that might come up is some top-level eavesdropping among foreign diplomats. president obama is in northern ireland to meet with world leaders at the g-8 summit. syria is not normally on the docket but is expected to dominate the talks following president obama's move to ship weapons to rebels fighters. >> there are very big differences between the analysis of what happened in syria and who is to blame.

>> russia is noun to have given weapons. president vladimir putin says the rebels in syria are terrorists and barbarians who have even practiced cannibalism. >> are these the ones you want to support? are these the ones you want to supply with weapons? >> president obama and pr putin are expected to hold private conversation this afternoon. the conversation comes after a new report reveals the u.s. and uk spied on russia and others at another summit. the "guardian" newspaper says it has evidence that they spired on the london summit of 2009 hacking into smartphones and reading e-mails. the source? edward snowden. the normal nsa contractor who leaked see correct surveillance programs to the press. >> how much damage did he do? the fact is that time will tell. >> on cbs's "face the nation," chief of staff dennis mcdonough says snowden's leaks have hurt america. >> in effect give the playbook to those who would like to understood -- get around our techniques and practices.

>> a british foreign service spokesman declined to comment on the spying allegations. and we're awaiting comments from the president from northern ireland in about half an hour. anne-marie? >> susan mcginnis in washington. >> thank you, susan. there was a huge explosion in damascus yesterday. the syrian government blamed the attack on rebels. there are unconfirmed reports of casualties. also on sunday, amateur video appears to show amateurs appear to be attacking forces. there were no reports of casualties. and we're learning more about the massive intelligence programs leaked by contractor edward snowden. as chip reid reports, the scope of the program appeared to be limited. >> reporter: the national security agency collects phone records on tens of millions of americans but a document sent by top intelligence officials to congress this weekend says fewer

than 500 people were identified last year and all of them were expected of having ties to foreign terrorist organizations ooz. releasing that information is part of the effort by the obama to alleviate fears about the nsa's surveillance programs. white house chief of staff's dennis mcdonough appeared on cbs's "face the nation." >> does the president feel he has violated the privacy of any american? >> he does not. >> reporter: mcdonagh was asked about assertions by edward snowden, a former nsa contractor who insists he leaked information. >> he claimed, for example, he could listen in on any conversation. >> that's incorrect. >> including president. >> incorrect. >> if he had the phone number. did he overstate some of these things? >> it's truly my feeling he did. >> reporter: michigan republican mike rogers is chairman of the house intelligence committee.

>> it's legal. i think it comports with the constitution. i believe. and i think it does protect and save american lives. >> reporter: intelligence officials now claim that the surveillance programs have helped tlard dozens of potential terrorist attacks, but privacy advocates say they're scheming up far more information than they need to do the job. chip reid, cbs news, the white house. the officials from obama and the former george w. bush administration say the program that has been exposed by edward snowden have been essential in thwarts plots. on sunday dick cheney described snowden as a traitor. he said the one question that needs to be answered is the former nsa contractor could maybe be a spy for china. >> i'm deeply suspicious because he went to china. that's not place where you ordinarily want to go if you're interested in freedom and liberty and so forth. so it raises questions whether or not he had that kind of

connection before he did this. >> snowden is still believed to be in hong kong. well, two major labor unions in turkey are calling for nationwide strikes today following three weeks of anti-government protests there. last night police used tear gas and water cannons against protesters near the u.s. embassy in ankara, the capital. only sunday the prime minister addressed supporters after a crackdown on demonstrators saturday. and the u.s. is hoping the election of a moderate cleric and reformist as iran's new president will help resolve the dispute over iran's nuclear ambitions. hasan rowhani's victory came as a surprise. still, even as the new president, he is accountable to the hardliners in the iranian government. in north korea it says it's ready for high-level talks with the u.s. the obama administration says any talks must include north korea taking steps to scrap its nuclear weapons program. north korea says the meeting

should not include preconditions. in colorado, the black forest fire is now 65% contained. it's already burned 22 square miles, though, and killed two people. officials say someone started the fire, but they don't know whether it was an accident or arson. thousands of homeowners are finally returning, and bigad shaban caught up with two of them. >> reporter: those on the front line of the black forest fire hope to have it fully contained by thursday. it's destroyed close to 500 homes, including daryl fortner's home. what do you do now? >> we start over and rebuild our lives. >> reporter: fortner took this video. his chimney is all that's lefting. the fire also destroyed his tree trimming business. the fire destroyed all of his vehicles and equipment >> i couldn't believe it. i didn't want to believe it. >> reporter: fortner was out of town with when the fire started. by the time he returned the authorities wouldn't let him get

any belongings. >> i want to thank them from the boom of my heart for not letting me get in because if i could would have got to my house, i would have stayed there. >> reporter: crews are going lot by lot putting out hot spots but they're urging residents to be patient. >> i don't want to create a false hope that everybody's going to return home because that's not going to happen. those thousands were allowed to return including bruce lockwood who is spending his 48th birthday and father's day at home. >> reporter: what was your fear? >> that we wouldn't have had a home. >> reporter: on saturday residents gathered to thank firefighters. >> we have to give him a real big father's day kiss real quick. she bad

added more than 1%. investors will be keeping a close eye on ben bernanke this week. he'll make a statement about the economy on wednesday. last month the fed said bernanke may start slowing down his stimulus program, and that sent the market scrambling. last week the dow drop 105 points to finnive just over 15,000 while the nasdaq dropped 21 points. some of the markets are still bullish on the economy. that's not discouraging a number of economists. they're predicting a healthier economy and lasting growth. gm is recalling an additional 200,000 mid-size suvs in august. they recalled almost 250,000, but it was limited to those sold in the 20 snowbelt states. this time the recall is nationwide and for the same problem. the power door and window module in the driver's door can catch fire even when it's not being

used. the recall is for the 2006 and 2007 chevy trailblazer, gmgmc envoy, buick rainier, saab 9-7x, and isuzu ascender. a high-ranking irs official says she was involved in targeting tea batter groups. holly paz said she reviewed hundreds of transcripts. paz has been placed administrative leave. and "superman" brought in $125 million this weekend. that is a new record for highest opening ever in june. the comedy "this in the end" came in second place with just over $20 million, and a thriller
