assault. >> now the alleged victim talks for the first time about what happened. >> hello, i'm denise koch. >> i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about tonight. the alleged victim in a sexual assault investigation at the u.s. naval academy in annapolis is speaking publicly for the first time and we have learned her suspected attackers could be charged any time. wjz is live with complete coverage. mike hellgren has reaction to the interview but first mary bubala has the woman's emotional story. >> several football players will soon face charges in connection with to the alleged rape. it comes as the victim and her mother are taking their story public hoping to pressure the military to make changes, and they ask that their faces be concealed. >> reporter: in an exclusive interview with cbs news the 20- year-old navy midshipman says she was attacked at an off- campus party last april. >> i was drinking.

i had drank a lot from. that pint on i really don't remember what happened. i woke up the next morning with bruises and i knew something wasn't right. >> reporter: the midshipman says she found out what happened on social media. >> they're telling me that i had sexual interactions with people that i was completely unaware of. >> reporter: she says she knows the three naval academy students, all football players who stand accused of raping her. >> i have outside witnesses. the attackers bragged about it. they told me to my face what they did. >> she went to see a doctor at the naval academy and was offered a rape kit but refused. she says she was in denial. and she didn't report the incident for months and delayed telling her mom. after the international ballroom i had been right, and i just -- i mean, what do you say? i just told her i'm so sorry. >> reporter: the student says

she is being made to believe it was her fault. the turning point she says came during one of the academy's routine sexual assault briefings where she felt all eyes on her. >> i went to the bathroom, sat in a stall and cried, and it just so happened that there was another girl sitting right next to me, and she was crying, too. unfortunately we shared that same experience. there is a much bigger problem. >> reporter: the mother and daughter are now speaking out because the academy is not taking the situation seriously and they worry about retaliation. >> i received a lot of hostility, not even from the attackers but from their teammates. >> the student says she does not want this horrible incident to define her. back to you, vic. >> mary, thank you. wjz live complete coverage continues with investigator mike hellgren live in annapolis with reaction to the interview. mike. >> reporter: vic this bombshell interview is certainly making waves her at the naval academy with top maryland lawmakers calling for a fair and a full

investigation. >> i'm not going to let this assault define me. >> allegations of a gang rape at the naval academy are just part of a string of recent sex crimes playing the military. maryland representative who serves on the naval academy's board of visitors is demanding action. >> clearly what's happening now is not working. we have to deal with it. it makes us weaker. we cannot afford in that our military. >> reporter: and an infuriated senator barbara mikulski wrote a letter questioning the leadership to prevent sex assault saying i have been work on this issue more than 25 years and keep hearing that the military has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to sexual assault. the message stays the same but the problem keeps getting worse. the number of sexual assaults rose 6% between last year and the year before. but many gown reported. the pentagon estimates a staggering 19,300 service men

and women experience unwanted sexual contact in 2010, rising to 26,000 last year. >> the number veep sods are unbelievably night. senator ben cardin watched the exclusive cbs interview with the alleged victim. >> this type of conduct will not be tolerated in our military. it won't be tolerated anywhere in our society. >> the president also called for action while addressing graduates in annapolis last month. >> we have to be determined to stop these crimes. >> some in congress want sex crimes taken out of the chain of command to ease fears of retaliation, and stop this growing problem. >> these are obviously some serious situations that need to be addressed but i haven't lost hope. >> reporter: and senator mikulski says if we are going to end sexual assault in the military we need to start by ending it at the institutions that train our future leaders. reporting live at the naval academy, in annapolis, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> mike, thank you. the naval academy also said in

a statement that sexual assault is a crime that has noplace at the u.s. naval academy just as hat noplace in the rest of the military. a developing story at this hour. a man taken from the united states airlines jet is now hospitalized in new jersey. passengers say the man stood up in the cabin of the international flight and yelled that everyone on board was being poisoned. a flight attendant and other passengers helped subdue and handcuff the man. the pilot of the flight 116 from hong kong decided not to divert the plane. it arrived in newark liberty at 2:00 this afternoon. there is no indication anyone was actually poisoned. the scope of george huguely's appeal of his murder conviction is expanding. >> reporter: vic, the appeals court will take a broader look at huguely's conviction. he was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend, yeardley love. the court ruled that three additional issues can be argued during the appeal.

the court had already agreed to hear arguments on two trial errors but it was asked to broaden the basis to include other issues raised after his conviction. love was found dead in her bedroom in may of 2010. vic. >> kai, thank you. huguely's attorneys wrote in an e-mail today they were pleased that the court agreed to expand the appeal j. a date at camden yards turns tragic when some hecklers beat a man almost to death. now his family is speaking out for the first time. wjz is live at oriole park. jessica kartalija has more. >> reporter: denise, tonight the 25-year-old struggles to recover while two suspects sit behind bars charged with assault. cell phone video captured moments after 25-year-old matt fortese is brutal alley attacked at a nationals-orioles game, heckled for wearing a yankees cap, mychal bell and gregory fleishman are now charged with throwing a punch

that sent fortese falling several feet, cracking his skull, leaving him unconscious. now fortese's family is speaking out for the first time. >> when matt had to go into emergency brain surgery on may 31st, due to complications from his injuries, more than 30 people drove down from hagerstown to be in the waiting room and wait with my family throughout the surgery. >> reporter: after two weeks in critical condition, fortese in a photo from his graduation has been moved to a facility to learn how to talk again. >> he's out of that acute phase, and now he's into the rehabilitation phase. >> reporter: fortese was on his second date with taylor queen when the fight broke out. an off-duty trooper came to his aid witnesses say the suspect, who had been heckling fans throughout the game, continued to yell and spit at them. >> he was able to clear the airway right away and provide life saving medical care that was not otherwise immediately provided. >> reporter: he was also able to hold suspects until city

two different women. anyone with information should call howard county police. heart break tonight in cecil county as friends and family say their final good- byes toe a murdered 10-year-old girl. derek valcourt reports from northeast on the funeral for the girl found dead just one week ago. >> reporter: it is a day the family of kami ring never imagined as they lay to rest their murdered little angel. in the town of northeast, cecil county, dozens of mourners came to comfort each other and pay tribute to the little girl who touched so many lives. >> she loved life. she loved singing, she loved school. she was a blessing in everyone's heart. we were blessed to have her for the short period of time we did. we got robbed of that. >> reporter: kami ring disappeared last sunday night while staying is at the home of a couple who had become like grandparents to her. police point the blame for her death at that couple's adult son, richard madden, now accused of raping and murdering

the little girl, then leaving her body in a field feet from the home. news that has shocked this small community. >> it's horrific. if anybody's got a heart, it touches them. >> reporter: in fact, it's touched this area so much, local businesses, including flower shops and the funeral home, all donated their services. the boys and girls club of cecil county helped coordinate tester. senate's just deaf stating to see a young child like this who was so ambitious so bright, talented. >> reporter: friends and family now calling for justice as they grieve for little kami. >> we're all devastated. the kids are devastated, the elementary school kids, the teachers, everyone poured out their heart to the family of cam mirks and i just wanted to tell everyone thank you very much. >> reporter: kami ring's accused killer remains locked up in jail on charges of murder and rape. he faces the possibility of life in prison without parole. in cecil county, derek

it is partly sunny, 85 degrees. the complete first warning forecast is coming up. firefighters are called to a group home in parkville twice. the second time they order everyone out. mike schuh has more on why they were evacuated and hospitalized. >> reporter: a total of eight people were taken to the hospital. four are patients, four are staff. the assistant executive director of the agency that runs these homes says right now they all are feeling much better. the windows are open but the

front door warns of danger. here at midnight a person is found unconscious. >> came in, patient transported. >> reporter: the fire department left but then an hour later, another call. this is a group home for those with mental disabilities. all four patients and four staff members were transported to hossmentsz six were found to be in need of the hyperbaric chambers. >> actually i went to the hospital and saw everybody. everybody seems to be doing really well. >> reporter: i understand they have some intellectual disabilities. >> yes. >> reporter: did they understand what happened? >> probably not. >> reporter: the number two of the agency which runs the home praises her staff, firefighters, and er nurses who saw to the that those worse off went to shock trauma. >> i have nothing but absolute accolades for the staff at the hospital. they were absolutely awesome. >> reporter: the fire department called in the department of environment. air samples initially showed high carbon monoxide levels but

since's not heating season they're looking for other causes. >> sometimes you can mix two household chemicals and create dangerous environments. >> reporter: that explanation, though, stumps the vp from the agency as she says due to the mental capabilities from the patient they keep very few chemicals of any kind at this home, a home that is now closed as air samples are being analyzed. upon recovery, those patients will be taken to other group homes owned by the same agency. two different state agencies are now investigating. i'm mike schuh in parkville. back to you on tv hill. >> we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. we have some breaking news right now in harr ford county. there's been an accident along i-95. we are going to go to skyeye chopper 13 and captain jeff long. captain jeff. >> reporter: good evening. multiple car accident here on 95 southbound through joppa. this is at the exit for south mount road.

so far a quiet afternoon except around the elkton area. take a look at temperatures right now. pretty normal afternoon. normal high today is 84. currently we're at 85. it did get a couple degrees warmer. 76 in ocean city. a very pleasant 72 in oakland. 84 in d.c. the dew . is up a little bit to 66 degrees. it's moderate humidity, we'll call it. if the dew point were 70, it would be really sticky out there. 82 rock hall, and by the bay 99 degrees. there's one shower now moving

into northern delaware. westchester had some, let's say penny sized hail, then we got a report of quarter-sized hail in new calf county, delaware. so there was some hail with that cell but it's moving off toward the delaware bay, into northern delaware. one other cell just southeast of d.c., in central pg county, moving to the southeast may affect you folks in extreme southern anne arundel county, and northern calvert county if the continues as we lose the sun it loses the energy so it shouldn't last a whole lot longer, but tomorrow a better chance of these storms developing. right now most areas seeing southwest wind here. to the west of us, a bit of a northwest flow. there is a frontal boundary to the north of us, although it is kind of diffuse looking. some shower and thunderstorm activity behind it with some dryer and cooler air. it will kick up a pretty good chance of thunderstorm activity. could see some heavy downpours and brief gusty winds.

it is 6:30. 85 degrees and partly sunny in central maryland. thanks for stwaig wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. homicide detectives are on the scene of colorado's worst wildfire ever. fire investigators say weather is being ruled out as the cause of the deadly fire. some evacuees now return home. >> reporter: crews are searching for hot spots to make sure the most destructive wildfire in colorado's history doesn't roar back to life. >> walking the properties, putting out stumps, brushfires. >> rain has helped firefighters get the upper hand on the massive blaze that killed two people and burned nearly 500 homes. darrell fortner returned to his house to find out he lost

everything. >> i couldn't believe it. i didn't want to believe it. >> reporter: fire officials have ruled out weather as possible cause. they're investigating whether an arsonist may have set the fire. >> this is a crime scene until proven otherwise. >> reporter: and as crews returned from the fire lines, residents crowded the streets to show their appreciation. a wildfire may have destroyed hundreds of homes, but thousands of others were saved. wjz eyewitness news. now, downed power lines are preventing some people from returning home. prosecutors and george zimmerman's defense attorneys are back in court for a second week of jury selection in zimmerman's second-degree murder trial. mary has the latest. >> reporter: today attorneys resumed the first round of questioning of potential jurors about their media exposure to the case. so far they have interviewed 41

potential jurors. one prospect said he had heard nothing about the case but added he did not feel he could presume guilt or innocence for religious reasons. another pros experts, an older woman, said protests about to case made her uncomfortable. prosecutors and defense attorneys are seeking a pool of 40 potential jurors with no media influence. >> mary, thank you. when they find those 40, then the second round of question willing begin. the killing sparked outrage and protests, and now one year after the death of 17-year-old christopher brown, a baltimore county police officer goes on trial. alex demetrick reports the charge is manslaughter. >> reporter: after a rock hit his dorks off-duty police officer james la board chased down one of the teens outside his home. 17-year-old christopher brown died of asphyxiation while laboard restrained him. today jury selection began in the manslaughter trial of laboard, a veteran police officer. >> we're not looking for life

for life. i'll say that over and over again. we pray for laboard's family. we pray for him. but when you have done something wrong, people need to own responsibility. >> reporter: but responsibility was something the victim's family felt laboard was escaping when his arrest took days and the charge was manslaughter, not the second- degree murder charge protesters were calling for. there was also anger that laboard was freed without having to post bail. brown's mother and others sought as unfair preferential treatment night. eve assured her a complete, fair, and thorough investigation, which has been conducted. >> the fact that laboard was an off-duty police officer had no berg on the time it took to evaluate the evidence and to move this case forward. >> reporter: christopher brown died june 13th last year. did he not throw the rock that eventually led to his death. in court, 100 prospective jurors were called. 12 of them will judge james laboard. this trial is not expected to

be long one. both the defense and prosecution anticipate a verdict by this friday. alex demetrick, wjz, eyewitness news. >> if convicted on the manslaughter charges, james laboard could be sentenced up to to 10 years in prison. the fbi is digging up a field in michigan in hopes of discovering the remains of former teamsters leader jimmy hoffa. investigators say they got information from a mobster who told authorities hoffa's body was buried 20 miles from the restaurant where he was last zion july 1975. he says hoffa was buried in a shallow grave. nsa leaker edward snowden is defending his disclosure. snowden who grew up here in maryland spoke with the guardian website on line. he says the government won't silence him by jailing or, in his words, murdering him. snowden says did he not reveal any u.s. operations against what he called legitimate

military targets. u.s. officials say the data gathering programs were legal and operated under court supervision. snowden is in hiding in hong kong. two people are in police custody after attempting to burglarize a hess station in anne arundel county. it happened saturday around 3:30 in the morning. police say line nell eades tried to hide inside the gas stay, then fled. he was captured and tased. property from the gas station was found on him at that time. a short time later a woman was found. police believe she was the look- out for eades. time now for a quick look at some of the stories will you find in tomorrow morning's edition of the baltimore sun. the local company known for making a cologne for the x-men, spider-man, and more. and towson's new arena should boost the school's

calls after a deck collapses at a popular sports bar in miami, sending dozens of people into the water. >> miami-dade county police and fire. where's your emergency? >> a deck just totally collapsed. there are at least 100. few hundreds of people were at the sports bar watching the nba finals. 33 people were injured two, seriously. investigators believe a structural problem may be the cause. a disturbing weekend of blood shed in chicago. 46 people were shot and seven killed between friday and sunday. reports say chicago police were involved in three of the shootings. this latest rash of violence comes even as chicago has experienced a decline overall homicides and shootings this year. two former mobsters face off in a boston courtroom. a 72-year-old former hit man testifies against whitey bull gear. >> reporter: former hit man

john morteramo and former mobster whitey bulger glanced at each other but didn't make eye contact. bulger was arrested in 2011 after 16 years on the fbi's most wanted list and is now on trial for 19 murders and other crimes including extortion and rack tearing. the man said he decided to become an inform apartment after learning bulger was on the list. in a 2008 interview he said bulger violated their code of loyalty when he started ratting out other gang members. >> i never informed or ratted on nobody, and if i could have killed him, i would have killed him, but he wasn't there. and that's what i think he did he concerns. >> even as he testifies against bull goes, he doesn't see himself as an informant. >> how can i be ratting on a guy who is the rat for 30

years? i'm trying to stop him from ratting any more. >> reporter: his attorneys are trying to raise doubts about his testimony. they say he framed bulger for murders he didn't commit in exchange for a lighter sentence. wjz, eyewitness news. >> in court today, marterano said he took a $20,000 lump sum payment from the government rather than go into the witness protection program. he said he sold his life story toe a movie studio for $250,000 but the movie has not wet been made. the duke of eden burg walked out of a london figure this morning. buckingham palace says he will continue to recuperate at windsor castle. the 92-year-old was dhitd to the hospital on june 6th. he has had a number of health problems including treatment for a blocked artery and bladder infection. just days after a courtroom slap, football player chad johnson is being released from a florida jail.

johnson made an apology to broward county judge kathleen mccue. the judge saw is it and did not accept the play but sent johnson to jail for 30 days. a surprising controversy in arkansas. a resident's displeasure with a property developer leadstown wanted signs. toilets in trees. the resident owns the property adjacent to where the new developer is building, and he is not pleased about his new neighbor sew took matters into his own hands putting toilets in the trees and hanging signs that say a trailer park is coming. so far it has affected sales. according to police, hanging signs and toilets on his land is not illegal. >> might be a little nasty, though, a little mean. scott pelley has a preview of the cbs evening news. >> can voters be asked for proof of citizenship at the polls? the supreme court has decided the question and with we'll
