station. hi, i'm todd jackson and i'm mary. this is just the beginning of what's expected to be an extended heat wave where it's very steamy, and you can see that by this bike ride in towson. >> as you mentioned, today so far, the hottest day of the year. we were 93 a couple of weeks agaround now 94 at last report. the dew point is at 70 degrees, yes, it's sticky, you're uncomfortable, everybody is feeling the heat. 100 degrees is the way it feels on your skin.

105 in's in -- in easton. d.c. just jumped up to 101 as you can see. 24 hours ago we were around the upper 80s to around 90. 5 degrees warmer in d.c. and 3 degrees warmer in ocean city. everybody pretty much from midwest and the east coast, upper 80s to mid-90s. north texas and oklahoma were in the hundreds a couple of days ago, they have cooled down with showers and cloud activity. we're going to stay with these temperatures for at least four or five more days, chelsey? >> we're going to see this span the next several days. all all of this heat is being trapped

right into our neighborhood and it's not going anywhere for the next couple of dais. as we head into tomorrow, check it out, we have a heat advisory in effect for baltimore city as well as washington, d.c. for temperatures from around at least 95 degrees or higher and a heat index in the lower 100s, so it's going to be a very hot one as we head into the next couple of days. we'll have more coming up, back to you. >> chelsey, thank you. lynn is live with the wjz might be weather lab. lynn, how you doing out there? >> mary, i'm melting. it's 94.7 outside, that heat index, 103. unfortunately, this hot weather is sticking around. >> reporter: whether you're working outside, out for a run or trying to stay cool at the

pool, it's miserably and dangerously hot outside. these workers have hours of work ahead of them in scorching temps. make sure you take plenty of breaks in the shade and, of course, drink plenty of fluids, a sentiment echoes around the state, franklin metro scare is the busiest center around the state. >> if you are either very young or very old or if you have other medical conditions like high blood pressure, heart disease, stay inside, stay somewhere cool. >> there have been four heat related deaths so far this year, so it's important to call 911 immediately if you see science of heat stroke or exhaustion.

sanford, florida. >> reporter: george zimmerman's attorneys tell the cbs evening news they are not were rid about a possible criminal civil rights suit. >> the fbi looked at this case for over a year and they did not find any actions by george that would suggest a civil rights allegation. >> they also not worried that trayvon martin's family will file a civil suit. >> reporter: the justice department is looking at whether the government should file a civil rights case against zimmerman. eric holder spoke to an african-american group today. >> we are worried about violence toward young people to deal with

the underlying attitudes, mistaken beliefs and stereotypes that serve as the basis for these two common incidences. >> zimmerman has been in seclusion since the trial. his attorney said he will request to have the gun he used to shoot trayvon martin returned. >> reporter: on monday, hundreds of people attended a prayer service at a church several miles from where trayvon martin was killed. pastors here are promoting peace and trying to help the community heal in the aftermath of zimmerman's acquittal. a demonstration over the verdict is set to begin in about an hour downtown. we'll bring you the live coverage at 5:00. >> a fair well to a police officer killed killed in a car accident today.

shane volk died after a single car crash last week. he was with the police department since 2008. the preliminary report is out about the deadly plane crash, denise? >> the national transportation safety board said the plane appeared in tact as it hit the ocean and it was found together, but fractured from impact. the report also states that the left wing was lost during recovery. two off duty ocean city police officers died in the june 30th crash. a second report will be released when the investigation is complete and a final report when the cause is determined, mary? >> denise, thank you. the accident happened just after takeoff. edward snowdon is still in

limbo and still holding information. >> the nuts and bolts of how nsa traffics phone calls and an instruction manual of how to spy is one secret edward snowden doesn't want released. what's been published is considered damaging enough by the obama administration. >> make no mistake, this violation of our laws was a serious security breech. >> reporter: snowden is apparently sitting on that secret at a moscow airport. he says, quote, i have been made stateless and hounded for my act of political expression.

it's mostly sunny, 94 in central maryland right now, the complete forecast is coming up. a texas news team gets a scare on live television. oh, the studio had a little bit of a ruckus. >> the corpus christi was rocked bay house explosion two miles away. the blast was felt throughout the area. it flattened three homes, destroyed countless others and left two men in critical condition.

a 6-year-old boy was trapped under 14 feet of sand. doctors say it's a miracle he's alive. >> reporter: a 6-year-old boy buried under 11 feet of stand on an indiana beach is doing remarkably well. he has sand in his lungs and is sedated but he's doing well. >> he's improving every day. >> reporter: may -- nathan was walking down the beach when he disappeared. >> they started to dig to get him out and as they dug, he went deeper and deeper. >> friends called for help. >> 911. my friend's son got stuck in a sand do you know, and he's like under the sand do you know and he can't get out.

>> more than three hours later, they found nathan. >> i supported his head and i talked to him like i would talk to my own son. once i got him out, everybody started breaking down. >> reporter: rescuers think the boy survived in an air pocket. he's a typical boy who loves to be outside. >> we believe that god spared him for a reason and we're very confident that god will give us back nathan whole. >> reporter: doctors don't think nathan has any brain damage but he may have long term breathing problems. nathan's family hopes he will be back at school when the new year begins. can wall street start the week off right? the markets are up again today, the dow is up 20, the s&p is up

locations like westminster, 93, 934 934 crumb bee -- 94 in columbia. the winds are around 5 miles per hour out of the north in baltimore and 3 right now in d.c. as we head into the tomorrow, we're looking again at another hot day. we have for you our model of real feel temperatures. at 10:00 in the morning, we're going to feel like the upper 90s. the hottest period of the day is going to be around 3:00, that's when we'll feel like 05 outside even though the temperature will probably only read in the upper 90s. of course, we'll die down a little bit by the evening time and rise once again as we head into wednesday. it's all thanks to this area of dry air, also known as high pressure. it's just a deem of upper level

wjz is live. chelsea ingram and bob turk are updating the conditions. >> it's the hottest week to be here. 94, making it the hottest day of the year so far. we have two other days that were 93. 95 in d.c., 88, ocean city and only 79 in oakland. our heat index has come down a little bit, it was 100 last hour. 99 is the way it feels, 105 in easton. 81 up in the mountains right now, a lot cooler. temperatures this afternoon, you see 2-6 degrees warmer than yes. the weekend wasn't all that bad but the humidity is back with us. the eastern part of the country is

lightning at a beach. kai has more with their recovery. >> john benson and alex steele are awake from their comas. the doctors induced the comas to prevent brain damage. both came out of the comas on friday and they are okay. the young men will remain at the hospital for several more days. a woman whose husband swam five miles to save them is speaking out. >> he swam and they clunk to the 16-foot boat who had capsized in

chesapeake bay. >> reporter: it was about 7:00 p.m. and land was miles away. >> i now from the get go what kind of trouble we were in. >> john looked at me and said should i swim for it? i looked at him and said yeah. >> it was a life or death decision in rough seas. >> two or three foot seas, enough to keep you from getting your breath right, it was matching in your face while you were trying to swim, that was a problem. >> behind him, four members of his family, including his sister sister, her son and their nephew. >> it was really just about staying calm, being reassuring. >> we were thinking about when we could drink hot chocolate and

have a blanket around me. >> john finally reached land at 1:00 a.m., five hours after reaching a family behind. he made it to a woman's front door and they called 911. >> okay, are you on the boat right now? >> no, i have been swimming to get to shore. >> the next morning, 7.5 hours after their boat capsized, they were rescued. >> there's a part of it that doesn't seem real, like it was a dream or this is just a dream and i'm still out on that boat holding on. >> all of the family members are doing well. they're recovering from jellyfish stings along with bruises and scrapes. their boat cap sides when their storm came in and a huge wave crashes on top of that boat. >> police say life jackets played a key role in saving august of their lives. >> how is the rush how right

an investigation underway after a home explosion. the home belonged to the injure man's girlfriend who was reported missing last month. police think arson may be to blame. canadian authorities plan an autopsy today for 31-year-old actor cory montieth. >> ♪ >> reporter: ever since glee's

debut four years ago, ark montieth has played glenn hudson who was a football player who also loved to sing. >> it's rare to see an actor who can be credible as a football player and also have the chops to be credible as a musician. >> reporter: montieth was last seen entering his vancouver hotel room alone friday night. after he failed to check out on saturday, his body was found by hotel staff. on glee, his character faced a long list of problems, everything from relationship woes to a pregnancy scare. >> whatever i did, i'm sorry. >> i'm pregnant. >> reporter: but those issues

her father who left her in his car with her grandmother who suffers from dementia while he went grocery shopping. the toddler's father was briefly jailed on child endangerment charges but has not been named a suspect. >> nothing has turned up in the searches. a 12-year-old chicago boy is being called a hero after warning theys about a fire. the fire averaged several homes, but thanks to 12-year-old edwin perez, there were no juice. instead of panicking, he woke everyone up in his apartment and four other families. and indiana man rides roller coasters again and again in his backyard. the man ended up with

all right, stay in cool places the next several days. it's going to be hot and humid, particularly for folks who have compromised breathing, lung issues, any kind of health issues at all, please be careful, okay? let's look at temperatures right now, we're at 94. that's the high for today and that's the hottest temperature we have had all summer, all year. the good news is in the last hour the dew

point came down 2 degrees. the lower it gets, the more comfortable we're going to be. we have seen the 60s, it's not as horrible is if it's in the 70s. the humidity has come down to 42%. i'm not saying it's a piece of cake, by it's better than the low to mid 70s, for for sure. elton at 93. we're going to see more warm temperatures. we do have a look at the current winds, very light but generally out of the north. what that could mean in the next several days with a north wind, it tends to dry things out a little bit. a dew point could come down a little bit but the temperatures may go

up several degrees oh the next 7 days. we'll get up to 99 by 11:00 tomorrow morning, yes, 101 in places to the east and south of us and during the day, up to 105 by 4:00 depending on the temperature and dew point, of course. d.c. could be up to 108. by evening, we drop back to the up other -- upper 70s and low 80s. look at the east, dry, really no haze at all, a few popup showers well to our north w. don't really expect to see much in the way of shower activities all week long until our front gets here and that won't be until saturday. north winds in the day, hopefully that will lower this dew point a little bit. tonight, just another warm night, 73 overnight
