suspicious substance. the alarming discovery outside congressman elijah cummings' baltimore office. >> now the fbi is handling the investigation. >> i'm mary bubala. >> and i'm kai jackson. a mass -- unknown substance is found outside of congressman elijah cummings' office. monique griego is live with the latest. >> reporter: that substance was found outside the front door to his office. and cummings told us, whoever put it there wanted it to look like a bomb. the office of congressman elijah cummings, at the center of an intense investigation, after a suspicious material is found at the building. according to cummings with

military experience, arrived and noticed a putty-like material around the door. >> she noticed that there was something that gave the appearance of plastic explosive devices in 10 various places around the door. >> reporter: no one was allowed inside the building as baltimore fire and the fbi tested the material and scoured the area for any other crucial evidence. >> determined that it was not an explosive device. but it was made to appear that way, and that there were apparently some type of wiring connected to it. >> reporter: the fbi confirmed, the color was not hazardous. but they are continuing to test it. several sticky notes were also found on glass next to the black puty. but cummings said they did not contain any specific threat. >> reporter: and cummings also told us, sadly, he gets about a threat every week. and they have to take it seriously. >> cummings says the office has about 10 employees on staff

daily. testimony continues today. the trial of the woman accused of ordering a man to kill her husband at a towson gas station. vic is in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: carla porter says there was no other way for her to escape the relationship with her abusive husband. she said her husband had become verbally and physically abusive and controlling. but prosecutors say sporter -- porter still ordered a hit on her husband. and tried to deceive police by saying someone shot him and fled the scene. ray porter died at the gas station he owned on joppa road. >> police eventually charged five people, include karla porter, who is the last to go on trial. she faces november in -- life in prison for first-degree murder. more coming up live from towson, at 5:00 and 6:00. crews tear down the

cleveland house, where three women were held captive and raped for a decade. the victims and community are hoping the demolition will start to bring closure. >> reporter: survivor michelle knight released balloons into the air as the house where she was tied up, raped and tortured for more than a decade, came crumbling down. >> there is hope for everyone. >> reporter: the other victims, amanda berry and gina dejesus were not there. but gina's aunt delivered the first blow on their behalf. >> it just felt great. i mean, knowing that it's coming down. you know. now there will be closure for the whole family. >> reporter: said house was demolished as part of the deal that spared their abductor. ariel castro cried when he signed over the deed to the house, mentioning he had many happy memories there with the women. the victims are happy they won't have to see the house of

horrors anymore. >> i feel very liberated that people think of me as a hero and a role model. and i would love to continue being that. >> reporter: authorities are making sure the rubble does not end up in the wrong hands and sold as memorabilia. >> reporter: castro was sentenced last week to life in prison, plus 1,000 years. an investigation is under way into a two-alarm fire in baltimore county, broke out just after 9:00 this morning. at phil blithe's towing company. at one point, all firefighter his to get out of the building because of a large crack in the wall. no one was hurt. there is no word yet on a cause. a potential snub is raising tensions between russia and the united states. president obama changes a plan to meet with president putin. >> reporter: the white house says when president obama goes to russia next month, he will

not sit down with vladimir putin. president obama had planned to stop in moscow for a one-on-one meeting with the president. a white house statement said, we believe it would be more constructive to postpone the summit until we have more results from our shared agenda. russia's decision to grant edward snowden temporary asylum was part of the decision. >> there have been times where they put us back into cold war thinking and cold war mentality. and what i consistently say to them and what i say to president putin is, that's the past. >> reporter: during an appearance on nbc's the tonight show, with jay leno, the president also emphasized that tension would not keep him from the larger g20 summit in st. petersburg. >> it's not something unique to russia. they're hosting it this year. but it's important for us, as the leading economy in the

world to host it there. >> reporter: the white house says the lines of communication are still open. and secretary of state john kerry will meet with his russian counterpart leader this week in washington. bigad shaban, wjz eyewitness news. >> some members of congress being including new york senator chuck schumer had been outspoken, urging the president to cancel his meeting with putin. schumer says the president is acting like a bully. taking a live look outside. looks like the sun is trying to break through the clouds, though. meteorologist chelsea ingram is updating our first warning weather forecast. >> good afternoon, everyone. temperatures are warmer than they were this time yesterday. take a look at our current temperatures across the region. 81 in baltimore. 85 in d.c. a little warmer down south. cooler on the eastern shore. and locally, we are sitting in the low 80s for most places. 80 in annapolis and 80 degrees in kent island. some sunshine peeked through earlier this afternoon.

and that helped heat us up a bit. the clouds have thinned out. but we are expecting rain on the way. take a look at live first warning doppler radar. no rain in the immediate vicinity of metro area yet. but we have rain located out in northern virginia. it has sparked a severe thunderstorm warning out there. and its main direction is towards the northeast. we'll expect to see some of this rainfall move into western maryland over the next hour or two. and we could see even a little better rainfall in the next hours. we'll talk about more in your coming forecast. let's check with traffic and kristy breslin at traffic control. let's start off with the accidents out there. quite a few. washington boulevard at hands down. two in baltimore city. north milton at east federal. greenmount at east 39th. and also, anne arundel county, east ordinance at route 10. as far as your delays go, the top side inner loop, kind of creeping along there from charles street to harford road.

wjz. 38-year-old nathan louis campbell didn't say a word,a he walked into a los angeles courtroom with handcuffs. he's charged with murder, 16 counts of assault with a deadly weapon. and 17 counts of hit-and-run. campbell's attorney said he doesn't believe his client intentionally injured anyone. >> he is very saddened that an individual has lost their life. he does not believe that he is a homicidal person. he does not set out in life to injure or harm people. >> reporter: the hearing lasted just a couple of minutes. but the judge agreed to raise campbell's bail to more than $1.5 billion. >> police say campbell owned the car seen in this video. 32-year-old eliche grupone was on her honeymoon and was killed. she and her husband went to forest lawn memorial park to see her one last time before her body is flown back to italy.

profits at ralph lauren, and zillow fell short of expectations. freddie mac brought in some but it could be phased out with fannie mae. congress is considering dramatically scaling back on the government's role in guaranteeing mortgages. analyst says likely if that happens, rates will go up. recall involves certain 2004 to 2011 access cab models. the company says screws in the front seat belts can become loose. toyota says there are no reports of any injuries from the problem. and a new report finds most american students also work. the survey from citigroup found four out of five high school and college students had a job. the average student works 19 hours a week during the school year. nearly half of college kids say they need the money to pay for books and other school

for the next couple of days. temperatures, though, are warming up. if you have been really wanting those warmer temperatures, you'll want to get the next couple of days now. 85 in d.c. dew point at 70 degrees. that dew point has already started to rise. a lot of 70s. 71 in baltimore, 70-degree dew points are when things start feeling really humid and uncomfortable. we have the southerly flow that's helping to filter in those higher dew points, as well as warmer temperatures. so for the next couple of days, you'll notice we'll go through a warming trend. we may even see a few 90s by the time it's all said and done as we head into the weekend. and we've got some showers on the way. some will be moving through later on this afternoon and evening. particularly for western maryland. then we've got a cold front that will be pushing through as we head into thursday, out in front of that cold front, we could see a few strong thunderstorms start to fire up,

particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. that's going to be the case on friday. and then on saturday, another trailing cold front will make its way towards us. and again, another chance for showers. around 77 77 degrees on the bay. winds with gusts of 20 this afternoon. we have a small craft advisory in effect. and that's going to stay in effect, even as we head into your thursday. tonight, you can expect lows around 70 degrees. a thunderstorm early. mostly cloudy and humid. but i think a lot of spots will stay dry tonight. tomorrow, when we look at showers and a heavier thunderstorm, we're going to be mainly cloudy. temperatures will actually be closer to normal for this time of year, with highs around 86 degrees. then we'll continue to warm up as we head into the end of the workweek and even into the weekend. >> okay. >> i just can't promise a dry day any day this week. >> i know. no promises, chelsea. thank you. baltimore is still mourning the loss of beloved local legend art donovan. the former baltimore colt died

81 degrees, mostly cloudy in central maryland. here's what people are talking about. an intense man hunt is under way for a 40-year-old california man, suspected of killing her son and kill her 16- year-old daughter. as police search for suspected kidnapper james dimag joe, the -- dimaggio, the alleged suspect's father sends her a message. >> hannah, we love you very much. if you have a chance, take it. you run. >> reporter: authorities believe the suspect snatched 16- year-old hannah anderson, after he killed her mother and set his own house on fire. the remains of a child were found in a house, and they say it could be her brother, ethan. dimaggio was a 20-friend of the family. investigators don't know why he would turn on them.

the airport, where u.s. flight landed moments ago. police and airport officials say they don't have any specifics about the reported threat or details about where it might have originated. the father of the lan convicted of the largest leak in army history. >> bradley manning says he thinks his son is innocent. the former intelligence analyst was convicted last month of seeking and leaking documents. >> we're worried about that. but then i still did the math in my head and said, well, if he was sentenced to all the other crimes, it would still be -- you know, he'd be 90 to 100

years old, before he ever saw the light of day. >> bradley manning was found guilty of violating the espionage act. he fays up to 90 years in prison. >> a military judge consolidated some of his charges. tensions remain high in yemen after another drone strike. it comes after as more well the country on a state department terror warning. security forces in yemen have their guard up, after another suspected u.s. drone strike killed seven al qaeda fighters. it is believed to be the fifth in yemen in less than two weeks. they are backing the military's campaign to crush terrorist threats. this spokesman says they foil an al qaeda plot to take over oil ports in the country. he says militants plan to

disguise themselves as yemeni troops. yemen is the base for al qaeda in the arabian peninsula. it is one of the most active can dangerous branches of the network osama bin laden founded. u.s. state department ordered americans out of the country tuesday, after u.s. intelligence officials intercepted communications between aqab and al qaeda chief ayman al-zawahri. he urged his followers in yemen to launch a major attack before the end of ramadan. the muslim holy week ends later this week. the recent terror alert also triggered a warning for americans overseas. hundreds of protestors are expected to gather outside city hall tonight, as the hearing resumes near the inner harbor. the city is requesting $107

this happen on a recent flight. >> she was greetly nursing her son. the flight attendant came over, made her feel really ashamed, unwelcomed. asked her to cover up. the woman complained. her friends, not satisfied with how they hamed it. >> they don't see it as a problem with their policy. we see it as a problem with their policy. >> now american is clarifying its possession -- position. we apologize for the nursing mother who was offered a blanket. the intent was to make everyone on board comfortable. since they're talking about breast-feeding, the moms made a point to breast-feed. and this passerby didn't mind. >> i'm fine with it. it's a natural process. babies get hungry. >> reporter: i asked a media representative with american airlines if such protests and the fact this showed up on social media will affect policy. and she said they are in discussions now, and that social media changes the game.
