taking the stand. karla porter, the woman charged with ordering a hit on her husband, testifies. >> why she says she had to do it. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. murder-for-hire trial. today, a whitemarsh woman takes the stand in her own defense. karla porter said she had to have her husband killed before he killed her. william ray porter was killed at the towson gas station he owned in 2010. wjz is live at the towson courthouse. derek valcourt was in court as karla porter testified. >> and at times, she broke down in tears, telling jurors that she endured years of beating. she lived in constant terror and just couldn't take it anymore. >> have you ever seen him before? >> no. >> reporter: during her

videotaped police interrogation, karla porter repeatedly lied about her involvement in the murder of her husband ray, at first, blaming a robber. but eventually, she confessed to planning his assassination. >> i just wanted somebody to hit him. i didn't want this to happen, i really didn't. >> what happened, karla? >> he was just being really mean. >> reporter: porter now admits she enlisted the help of several people, including members of her family, to hire hitman walter bishop to kill her husband in front of her, in 2010, at this hess gas station on joppa road. >> everybody said what a wonderful man. i didn't want you to know that he did hit me sometimes. >> reporter: karla porter took the stand thursday to detail years of physical and verbal abuse, she says she suffered at the hand of her husband. she said he kicked, threw things at her, slammed her head and held a gun to her head, threatening to kill her. porter said she lived in constant fear. "it was getting so bad, i knew

ray was going to kill me. i just wanted on to kill him first ." >> reporter: late tonight. ray and karla porter's daughter took the stand, saying she witnessed her father verbally abusing her mother. prosecutors suggesting that daughter is simply trying to help her mother out. they say the daughter and mother are very close. they also suggest that karla porter is making up these stories. [ inaudible ] derek valcourt being wjz eyewitness news. >> all right, derek, thank you. the other five defendants in the murder-for-hire scheme are already serving prison sentences. the u.s. coast guard identifies two men who died when a catamaran flips over in ocean city. >> reporter: the two men who died from that accident are from maryland. penal-year-old william gogle of baltimore. and freddie caristrio. it capsized northeast of ocean city. a helicopter crew in atlantic city, arrived and recovered the

bodies. another boat rescued two 55- year-old man who -- men wohave not been identified am -- who have not been identified. kai, back to you. >> vic, thank you. the coast guard is still investigating the cause. today, a federal grand jury indicts two friends of the surviving suspected boston marathon bomber, with obstruction of of the judge. the college friends are accused of removing a backpack, containing fireworks and a laptop, from dzokhar tsarnaev's room for trying to keep him from getting in trouble. if convicted issue they could face up to 20 years in prison. three people died in the april 15th bombing. and more than 260 others were hurt. less than a week after the russians granted asylum in maryland, nsa leaker edward snowden, president obama said he will not travel next month to sit down with russian president vladimir putin. the white house acknowledges that that relationship does have a lot of challenges.

several residents evacuated while they investigated. ultimatelies are no dangerous substance was found. it is a big day for the national aquarium. the world's largest reproduction of a pacific coral reef. jessica kartalija has more on the new 260,000-gallon indoor salt water tank. that's unbelievable, jess. >> it's in the that big, right? >> right. >> just a little tank. so i'm going to throw some numbers at you. it's the 32nd anniversary of the national aquarium here in baltimore. this is the first day that this is officially open, black tip reef. 700 different animals in here. 65 different species and one exciting afternoon. >> five, four, three, two, one.

[ cheering ] >> reporter: the mayor and aquarium ceo float into shark- infested water for the official ribbon cutting. >> it warms my heart. i'm excited to be here. >> black tip reef is really one of the first major enhancements to the aquarium in a number of years. and it just felt right to do it on our birthday, our 32nd anniversary. >> reporter: the grand opening today are black tip reef is full of light, color and movement, right in the heart of national aquarium. >> seeing it looking so beautiful is a nice edition. >> that's crush. >> that is crush, isn't it? >> reporter: the new exhibit is home to a 518-pound sea turtle, sharks, sting rays, and hundreds of brightly-colored fish, from awcht rail ralian and indonesian-- australian and indonesian water. >> it's exciting for us to be able to see this and see all of this -- oh, my goodness, anna! >> reporter: the indoor salt water tank is a coral-filled

exhibit. an exact replica of the indo- pacific reef. the staff spent 18 months constructing replicas of nearly 50 different species of coral. then painting them the same hue you might find in the great deep. >> reporter: okay, guys. 3,000 different pieces of coral. and it looks real. i mean, it's really incredible. i'll explain how they did all of this. that's going to come up in just a little bit. but it's kind of cleared out a little wit. getting later in the afternoon -- bit. getting later in the afternoon. absolutely jam-packed. as they did the ribbon-cutting ceremony. and it took the temperature here, way up. but not as hot as outside. for more on that, meteorologist tim williams is standing by live outside the aquarium. but first, we're going to go inside to bob turk, inside that nice and cool studio. >> how are you doing, jess. beautiful exhibit there. really beautiful exhibit. we have tropical weather. we have scattered showers and thundershowers that are popped

up in the afternoon. with all of this humidity and temperatures pretty much in the 80s. one or two showers just popping up close to the baltimore region. just over northeast baltimore. and one just to the west of timonium there, heading up toward cockeysville, further to the south and west. a lot more activity around the d.c. area. particularly around montgomery county, approaching the columbia area. pretty good showers. sykesville had over 3 inches of rain last night alone. they could see another inch or half inch in the next couple of hours as this system continues to develop. showersshowers andshowers and storms across the region. temperature-wise, got into the mid-80s. 84 now. 84 in easton. and 72, showers in the oakland area as well. now, tim is live there at the aquarium with the wjz mobile weather lab. with a look at what we expect to happen in the area tomorrow. could see some more with maybe downpours. tim? >> we certainly could see them. of course, here at the national

aquarium, we are right smack dab in the middle of downtown. we have seen the skies get dark. we haven't had any real rain here in the last hour or so. taking you to the wjz mobile weather lab. if you're planning on coming down, for any number of a series of events, 85 degrees now. almost 86. 85.9. the dew point is in that tropical range, just above 65. we also talk about it feeling more tropical. it's at 71.8, which gives us a heat index here on this asphalt, in the middle of downtown, of about 92. bob talked about what could be moving our way in the next 24 hours or so. many showers could be moving our way. and many of them are popping up. take a look at this graphic that we expect to play out tonight into tomorrow. we have a front moving through. that's allowing for a southwest flow of air. warm, moist humid air to move in. that along with temperatures going up. a few breaks of sun could heat things up. could cause pop-up

buccaneers. sports director mark viviano joins us with what to watch for in tonight's game. hey, mark. hey, mary. august is the month for nfl dress rehearsals. the schedule of preseason games don't count. but coaches will tell you, they do matter. in terms of preparing teams for the real games. >> reporter: with the nfl preaching a renewed emphasis on safety, there's very little contact during training camp. players look forward to playing a few preseason games so they can hit something other than a blocking sled. and play something that more closely resembles real football. >> the first preseason game especially is really just to get out there. you know, hopefully have a couple of good series and be very polished and all of that. and prove to yourself that the practice is paying off. >> reporter: training camp practices are a proving ground for many of the rookies and undrafted free agents, fighting to make the team. and the preseason games give them another chance to get noticed. >> it all goes in there. the games being the most

it's cloudy, humid and 84 degrees in central maryland. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. sentenced a howard county man gets the maximum 30-year prison sentence for killing his wife and burying her body under a shed. alex demetrick reports, it was a crime that went unsolved for two decades. >> reporter: bobby jarrett, jr., carried photos of his mom, himself and his young are brother to court. he was 10 years old when christine went missing. 21 years later, police found her body, buried under floor

boards in -- concrete. his father was convicted in second-degree murder, in what the jury viewed as an unplanned act of rage. his son said, when my father took my mother's life, he took what michael and i could have been. the 21 years has played a starring role in many night terrors, where i wake up screaming. >> it was very difficult to write that impact statement. because it's been 21 years and, you know, we had to really look back at our entire lives and just -- just realize the manipulation and the diseetd -- deceit through all of these years. >> reporter: jarrett's lawyer argued that he was a good father to the boys. but the judge didn't see it that way. saying, i think mr. jarrett's conduct was only to help one person. him. he is a monster, hiding in human skin. >> the defense believes the

cloudy. 80 to 85. something like that. very similar to the air outside. and it's tropical. we have shower activity popping up. here and there. and some areas getting decent shower activity. a bunch of it moving in. not too far from columbia, pretty good stuff. and we just had a light shower move through the towson area. moved now around perry hall to long green valley, just north of parkfield. south of the city now, we're getting a pretty good display of showers now. south of ellicott city, over columbia. south of the airport, yes, around laurel and fort meade. showers on the boyy, -- boyy -- bowie, crofton line. you can see a half inch of rain and brief, gusty winds with this activity as it moves generally to the north and northeast at around 20 miles an hour. temperature-wise, we did get pretty warm. 84 now. 81 in d.c. 84 in easton. 79, ocean city. and 81 in cumberland.

rain earlier. and 72 in oakland. locally, temps, either upper 70s where it's raining or low 80s everywhere else. we have a mixture of clouds and sun. keep this atmosphere with us, through about saturday afternoon. we think we'll have a frontal passage and get into somewhat dryer air. from baltimore south this weekend, they'll probably have additional showers and still kind of humid. but look to the west. still more shower activity, west virginia, ohio. and it's going to have to pass through the region. some of it will die down. but we have a chance tonight of more shower activity. on friday night, when the frontal boundary close to the region. more showers and storms for a while. could be downpours again. and then slightly dryer air come comes in to northern maryland to pennsylvania saturday. there's hope. if you head north, much dryer air. bay temp, around 77. tonight, showers and thundershower activity. yes. could be some downpours here and there. 72 tomorrow.

businesses. >> all right, linh, thank you. for a full list of which items are taxable and which items are exempt, go to cbsbaltimore.com. and click on news for this story. a military judge rules two attorneys, helping nidal hasan can't drop out of the case. >> reporter: well, kai, hassan's court-martial came to an abrupt halt when his stand by attorneys asked to be pulled from the case. the lawyers claim hassan is trying to get the death penalty. and say they will not help him be a martyr. hassan is representing himself in opening arguments admitted he was the gunman in the shooting. the judge ruled the defense attorneys are required to stay on the case. the lawyers are planning to appeal, claiming the judge is forcing them to violate professional rules of conduct. >> if convicted, hassan will

face the death penalty. stranded in kenya, a massive fire at the nairobi airport trapped nearly a dozen marylanders on a -- aide trips toaf rica. today, international flights resumed. but still could take days for some of tome get them. forcing the suspension of international flights and choking a travel gateway. several maryland aide workers were in all of that chaos. >> they let us out on the tarmac. and basically, with only one international terminal, which was completely in flames. >> reporter: katie price, an aide worker, had just arrived. she was one of hundreds of passengers watching the fire grow. >> we just waited for hours and watched the airport up in flames. it was pretty incredible. incredible sight. the pilot announced that they learned that the fuel line was underneath our plane, underneath the tarmac.

so that they needed to move us right away. >> reporter: 22-year-old jd schneider is stuck as well with habitat for humanity as well. jd's mom watched it all unfold back here in maryland. >> my first thought was, who blew this up. they're still not saying whether they know that it was somebody or not. so that's scary, too. >> reporter: all 10 maryland volunteers with habitat for humanity are now in limbo, hoping for a flight back home soon. >> at this point, they don't know when. but they're safe. they're happy. and they're just waiting. >> reporter: international flights are now back in the air but many could be delayed for days because of the backlog of departing flights. >> i'm still in nairobi. there were some flights that made it out today. mostly in europe. >> investigators say it is too early to know what started the fire. but they have ruled out

terrorism. part of the investigation now includes first responders. tonight, they're accused of looting electronics and atms, during and after that fire. anne arundel county police are looking for five teens armed with handguns who robbed a delivery driver. the 19-year-old driver for papa john's pizza was robbed while driving around maryland city around 10:30 last night. he was in the 3400 block of chesswell road, when the five males, two holding guns, stole cash. anyone with information is urged to call police. a new exhibit at the national aquarium here in baltimore comes to life. it is the world's largest reproduction of the pacific coral reef and features sharp- toothed friends. wjz is live. jessica joins us once again with more on the breathtaking black-tipped reef. >> hello, mary. hello, to everyone at home. earlier, i was asking you, which one you think isy is real. and which one you think is

faux. or we were saying faux real. any real guesses? this is the real one. and it very heavy. so i'm going to pass it off to my trusted assistant, sandy freeman. and this is faux but you'd never it. it's absolutely beautiful. i'll tell you how they made these. it's a resin. and they put it in the mold and peel it off. so take a look at this. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: as the crowd looks on, one by one, black-tipped sharks are welcomed to their new home in the national aquarium's black tipped reef. >> it's quite a process of getting the sharks in animal care facility. >> reporter: for the past several months, 20 black-tipped sharks have been living in an off-site facility, preparing to move to the new exhibit. >> we have to make sure that they are comfortable, that they acclimate well and are looking great and feeding great before we introduce them to the public. >> reporter: hundreds of

species of join the sharks. a lengthy process that requires a lot of planning and observation. >> when you have a tank that has little tiny fish and big sharks, you want those little fish to go in first and find a secure spot. then you put some bigger fish in, leading on up to the sharks. >> we put silicone rubber on this. and we make a mold. >> reporter: black-tipped reef is a complex ecosystem that looks just like the real indo pacific reefs. >> how similar is what we're going to see at the aquarium, to the natural habitat? >> i would say if you looked at a picture of the great barrier reef, you're degree to say it's -- going to say it's spot on. >> 3,000 different types, to be exact. [ applause ] ♪ [ music ] it took two days to get the black-tipped sharks into their new home.

>> a 13,000 square-foot tank. incredible view of the world down under. okay. so just to show you again how this works. this is that mold i was talking about. and when you peel it off, a beautiful faux coral in ravens purple. doesn't get any better than this, guys. and i think -- what's so cool about this is i got to learn all about this. mary bubala actually had to put on that tight scuba gear and get in here and swim with turtles. we'll have much more on that at 6:30. and mary, i commend you for that. and you looked good, by the way. for now, i'm going to send it out to meteorologist tim williams in the wjz mobile weather lab just outside. hello there. >> well, hello there, jessica. you know, the theme for everything. what jessica is doing inside. what we're doing outside. it just feels tropical. out here, the dew point is high, which always gives you that tropical feel when the humidity levels go up.

and because of that tropical feel, we've decided to update you on the national oceanic and atmospheric administration -- noaa's updated prediction on the tropics. things are expected to heat up here soon right smack in the middle of the season now. between the middle of august and middle of october is when it starts to heat up. noaa has updated their prediction. we are expecting now from noaa, that the season will be active. there is about a 70% chance of the season becoming above normal. which for us means there should be roughly 13 to 19 named storms. but of those, 6 to 9 of them will become hurricane. and 3 to 5 of them are expected to be major hurricanes, which is category 3, 4 or 5, with winds greater than 111 miles per hour. of course, we'll be able to keep you posted. our new wjz mobile weather lab will be able to take you on location in any place where we need to report from the scene and give you ideas on the current conditions. hopefully we're not talking damages. but certainly, we could be

daniel borowy. >> we have two school resource officers who have the capability if we need them to, to wand the student if we feel there is something on them. >> reporter: baltimore county spent $3.7 million to install new security measures like this monitoring system that will be in effect the first day of school. perry hall high school, as well as other schools across the county have a new buzzer system, and mandatory check-in procedure, in which visitors to the school have their ids scanned. >> by the first day of school, everything the be in process. >> reporter: they say gun safety starts at home. the gun used by gladden, taken from his father, was not in a safe. school administrators say paying attention to social media is also crucial. on the first day of school, gladden wrote, first day of school, last day of life. he has taken every precaution.

all right. some clouds building just to the west in the city. going to be raining pretty shortly. taking a lack at radar. we have a pretty good look of showers and storms. let's say the liberty road area down to the airport toward glen burnie. one extra shower headed toward bel air. but most of the activity now, just around the city. right around the southwest portion of the town. glen burnie to severna park. fort meade to columbia. that's moving up to the north towards owings mills.

this stuff from columbia to severna park. we expect to see these showers, moving into the region in the next 35 to 40 minutes. brief, heavy downpours. and gusty winds with these showers. tim is live with the mobile weather lab. going to rain there shortly, tim. with a lack at tomorrow's forecast. tim? >> well, definitely, as bob mentioned, those showers linger for a while. but hopefully they'll be there for a while. they could be in the area for a while. take a look at the forecast. starting off in the 70s tomorrow. about 70 degrees or so. we'll get into the mid-80s. again, the dew point will be high. another afternoon where storms could be firing up. and we'll taper off back into the low 80s to the 70s tomorrow. evening, heading into the overnight hours. back into 75 degrees. next five days, we send it in to bob. looks like a pretty good shot today. and again, we could see heavy downpours. we expect to see dryer air in on saturday. showers will stay south of the city. 88. same thing for sunday and

a new round of crash test finds many small cars don't perform well on front-end collisions. marlie hall reports for wjz, only one model received the top ranking of good from the insurance institute for highway safety. >> reporter: the honda civic earned the top safety rating in a new kind of crash test. for the first time, the insurance institute for highway safety conducted what it calls small, overlap crash tests. to see how the front corner of small cars holds up during a collision. that area isn't always designed to absorb a crash's impact. david zuby says this type of

collision causes 25% of serious injuries in frontal crashes. >> we still end up killing close to 9,000 people every year in frontal crashes. so this is one of the remaining problems. >> reporter: the dodge dart, ford focus, hyundai elant ra, and scion tc all received acceptable reatzings. -- ratings. but some popular models did not do well in the safety evaluation. chevrolet sonic, volkswagen beetle, chevrolet cruze, nissan sentra, kia soul and kia forte, all received marginal or poor ratings. but they say drivers of those cars should not be too concerned. >> all of the cars we tested today are very safe cars by virtue of the tests we have been running for a number of years. >> reporter: the agency said these tests will simply help car companies make safe cars that much safer. marlie hall, wjz eyewitness news. >> the toyota corolla was not tested because the new version is coming out in the fall.
