communion if you will. it began with the donovan grandchildren presenting the gifts to the priest. that was the bread, wafers and wine through a process of prayer and a processed called substantion would become the blood and body of christ temporarily during this service. and what happens next usually is everyone who is catholic and involved in the service inside the cathedral can come forward and have communion. i don't know if that will happen today, but that's what usually happens in high mass in the catholic church. >> ♪ [ music ] ♪ >> ♪ [singing] ♪ >> ♪ lamb of god, you take away

delivering it with his cohf co-priests. once they have had bread and wine i think they will pass it into the crowd. i could take this moment, this could be a long process, to tell a personal story that i witnessed in times and i heard don rodrick talk about earlier in the week. art had a fantastic talent. he called me scott. he would say where are you from, being an ex-patriot of the bronx could know that. once you told him where you were from, in my case, o ohio, he would bring some obscure name and tell you this guy played such and such position on such and such team, how long they played and what they were doing after they got out of football. if you weren't

amazed enough at that point by what this man had just drawn up from his memory, he would say and his mother made a really good lasagna or any other food. he had obviously been to a lot of these, again, low ranking players, mostly that you never heard of, to their homes when he visited other cities and played football against the teams from those cities. but it was amazing talent to have that recall and to use it over and over again. still waiting here to see exactly what's going to take place. i believe we are going to offer communion to the people in the cathedral. yeah. it happens fast, but it's still a long process when you have that number of people involved. please join in singing our

we're live at the funeral for art donovan. what you're seeing now is people coming from the amounter of celebrating communion with the priest. i misspoke when i said take part of the bread and the wine after the priest done so, at the catholic church they on the take part in the body of christ or the bread. there's kind of a closing ceremony that follows this with the priest where he will clean all the utensils used in the communion. this is proof of how many people attended today's service. i thought this would be over rather quickly. the church has a way of moving people along, but it has been dragging out a little bit. again, it's a good thing. an example of how many people cared enough to spend time this morning with art donovan at the cathedral mary. when daughter deborah took part in the prayer she came back a second time and
12:16 pm
said she thought she was going to get in trouble with this and then thanked the crowd for coming and to tell them that art loved them and the family loved them for coming. i think the reason she thought she was going to get into trouble was that it -- it wasn't in the bulletin, in the program. she was going against what was expected of her. but it's something her father would have been very proud of and would have liked her to say, thanking those in attendance today, although the priest had done so. all right. those in the congregation who have wanted to take communion on this special day are now done. the priests are walking back up to the alter. again, we'll go through another ritual that ends communion. we're two hymns away from the conclusion of this funeral. if you haven't heard by now, the burial will be private. the family is not offering that to the general

public. before today's service there was also a viewing for the family only and some very special friends. it is something that often a public figure and a public figure's family shares with everybody. in this case they can taking this very personally. as you've heard over and over again today, that art was above all one heck of a family man. his extended family has participated in every stage of the service today even when they read the ulogy which was not so much joe but what family members had told him about their dad, grandfather, brother and husband. interesting take on that.
