still for quite sometime. the crash sent one person to shock trauma. late tonight, police say a secondary accident has shut down lanes again, and they expect backups to continue for another half hour. a california 16-year-old is finally home safe with her family after her kidnapping sparked an international manhunt. hannah anderson was rescued where police shot and killed her abductor. fbi agents told hannah that did i imagine geo killed her -- dimaggio killed her mother andyounger brother before he kidnapped her and fled. he had an unusual infatuation with hannah. she's now back home with her father and grandfather in san diego. a massive sinkhole sends there vacationers running from their hotel. it swallowed part of a resort near disney world. the stunning images tonight for wjz. >> reporter: crews are watching a giant sink hole in florida to see if it gets any bigger.

the sink hole already swallowed part after three-story hotel about three miles from disney world. >> we heard some shaking and running up and down the hall and glass breaking. next thing i know people are yelling get out of the building. >> reporter: it happened overnight at the summer bay resort. half the building was destroyed when a 50-foot wide hole suddenly opened. two nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution. one vacationer caught a big part of the collapse on his cell phone. the building housed about 100 visitors. security guard richard chandley saved lives by knocking on doors as the building started to crumble. >> people were like is it really happening? i was like you've got to leave the building, because it is collapsing beneath us. >> everyone got out safely, but some guests made it out with very little time to spare. >> one woman was sitting in the tub and the tub just leave stated and that's when she just grabbed a pair of shorts and

came out with nothing. >> reporter: florida is prone to sinkholes because the ground is made up of limestone, which easily diswill solves in water -- dissolves in water. but most are small. the developer says there were no signs of any problems at the resort before sunday night. wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the developer says testing was done before the resort was built about 15 years ago and it showed the ground was stable. a man flying out of bwi marshal airport is caught with a loaded gun and extra ammunition in his carry on. tsa officials spotted this 383caliber handgun along with a magazine carrying extra rounds. he was arrested and later released. little italy fights back. one of baltimore's top dining destinations says resent crime is driving business away, so community leaders are taking neighborhood safety into their own hands. wjz is live in little italy right now. kai jackson has the efforts to

keep criminals out and welcome visitors back in. kai? >> reporter: that's right, denise. residents and business owners in little i takely are stepping -- italy are stepping up in a big way to protect their safety and neighborhood. a restaurant employee is brutally beaten leaving his jaw broken. >> it seemed like they beat him up for kicks. i don't know how you can describe it but for hate. >> reporter: four teenagers have been arrested and are now facing attempted murder charges. the attack stunned residents of the historic neighborhood and now it's prompting action. >> wall the walk look like? wall you be doing? >> well, we will be together. should be about 10 to 15 in each group. >> reporter: she owns calf day gia on high -- cafe gia on high street. she says they've performed a citizens on patrol. they plan to use electronic surveillance and old-fashioned foot patrols to make sure

residents and patrons are safe. >> we are the safest community in baltimore and we plan on staying that way. >> reporter: baltimore police say community intell led them to suspects in this crime. and they say if citizens stay involved it could stop other crimes from occurring. >> it was really the community's help and the great work by our detectives in the southeast that was able to bring this case to a close. >> reporter: the citizens on patrol walks are scheduled to start a week from tomorrow, august 20th in the evening. the baltimore city police department is expected to assist business owners and residents. back to you. >> all right, thank you, kai. little italy business owners say they also plan to hire an outside security company to patrol the streets for a period of time. well, a step forward for the city's controversy harbor point development deal. tonight city council gave preliminary approval to $100 million in public financing for the project which will be built at the waterfront between south point and harbor east. protesters tried to stop the city from giving public money to the development, but the

mayor argues in the long-term it will bring $20 million a year in taxes to the city. a budget crisis has one maryland school system going to extreme measures to save money. parents and students are furious to learn they'll have to pay for school sports. that has families in other parts of maryland wondering could it happen there? wjz is live. rochelle richie has details of the changes this school year. >> reporter: one of the changes harbor county public schools have implemented is cutting several bus routes for magnet students, all of this to make up for a $20 million deficit. with just 2 1/2 weeks before the first day of school, hartford county parents are hit with a double whammy. they'll not only have to pay for their kids to participate in clubs and sports but getting to school could be a challenge for magnet students with several because routes now cut. >> it will be a daily chore to get rides, because my mom works late. >> reporter: the school board decided it's the only way to

combat adds 20 million deficit digging deep into the pockets of parents. >> the idea that this is in the best interest of the students, i don't agree. >> reporter: neither do county officials. >> they have more than $13 million in a budget surplus for the school system. >> reporter: but the budgeting committee says no, they don't. they blame the deficit on a $6 million cut in state funding and a $15 million increase in expenditure. >> changes of any kind are always difficult for everyone involved and we are committed to working with parents in the community and families. to make this transition as easy as possible. >> reporter: teachers worry the pay to play policy may leave some kids out. >> not all students have the same financial ability, not all parents do. that's going to be hard on them there. >> reporter: parents will have to dish out $50 for their kids to play sports. >> i'm on two sports teams right now and i'm trying out for a third and that's $150 right there. >> reporter: students will also

maryland. your complete first warning forecast is coming up. a powerful typhoon is triggering flooding and landslides throughout the philippines. one person is dead and several missing. it's packing wind and torrential rains. this is the 12th tropical cyclone to hit the philippines this year. it is expected to affect southern china tomorrow. frightening scene in downtown seattle. a suspected gunman is shot on a metro bus. he opened fire hitting the driver multiple times. the suspect fled and got on to another bus and that's when they shot him. he later died at the hospital. the bus driver is listed in satisfactory condition. he spent 16 years on the run, but now boston mob boss whitey bulger is facing life in prison after being convicted in a string of killings. the jury found bulger guilty of racketeering and having a hand in 11 murders. the charges date back to the 1970's and '80s when he was the

leader of the winter hill gang. he became a fugitive after being tipped off about the indictment. the tune vicion brought tears of relief to the relatives of bulger's victims. many were in the courtroom. the 83-year-old is scheduled for sentencing. paula dean, a judge throws out the race discrimination claims. she was dropped after multiple business partners after acknowledging she used racial slurs in the past. it will still allow the former restaurant manager to go forward with claims of sexual harassment. a ruling by a tennessee judge regarding a baby's first name is causing strong reactions. louie baloo changed the child's first name from messiah to martin. she said messiah is a title and not a name for a been.

that little area west of d.c. one, two, quick little thundershowers popped up near romney. overnight tonight more of this activity will develop and move across the region. by morning, decent rain in the morning, showers and thunderstorm activity expected. generally a southerly wind bringing in moisture from the gulf of mexico. one little area of low pressure kind of sitting over kentucky area spreading rain into the virginia, west virginia area this afternoon. some of that has dissipated. another big area here of ohio. that's actually frontal system just clearing in chicago, much cooler air, trier air behind that. this whole mess will cross our region overnight. may take a little while but we'll see rain tonight into tomorrow and during the afternoon, maybe a slight break. if we get any sun at all, we could see another line of showers and thunderstorms developing again in the afternoon. but for the most part i think the bulk of this rain is going to be coming tomorrow morning.
