>> and here's what people are talking about today. a morning storm wreaks havoc in several maryland counties, tornado warnings. a live look outside. things look much calmer, cooler with some clouds. are all the storms over. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. marty is in mount washington with the mobile weather lab. meteorologist chelsea ingram is in the first warning weather center. we'll start with chelsea. hello everyone. we're quiet for now. things have calmed down a bit. take a look at live first warning doppler weather radar. we had a few showers and thunderstorms push over on the eastern shore, some residual from what went on this morning. we have a few spotty showers in the lower eastern shore, honestly not a lot going on. we had so much activity move through earlier today all out ahead of a cold front passing through this afternoon. here it is, we brought you back in time. you can see these strong thunderstorms developing where you see the pink and purple and black, that's where we have indicators of hail and

potentially even the location of some potential tornadoes that the national weather service will be serving later today, and we looked at harford county and cecil county. those were the two main spots where we had the strongest weather move through where we had tornado warnings, flash flood warnings and of course we could see a little more strong to severe weather as we head into the afternoon. we had some storm reports, and we've got marty live at the wjz mobile weather lab with more on that this morning. >> thank you very much. good afternoon everybody. the mobile weather lab is here in mount washington near the jones falls for a reason. currently what i'm noticing is quite a change from six hours ago. our realtime weather data in the mobile weather lab is showing winds barely moving at all. but having said that, we have a graphic for you showing that between 6 and 6:17 actually we really had a tremendous amount of action in harford county and in western cecil county.

we had a funnel cloud reported at 6 a.m. at 6:04 we may have a confirmed tornado located near perryman. at 6:17 a funnel cloud was reported near aberdeen, and it's interesting because if you looked at chelsea's radar, the real intense purples and blacks were later in the time line in cecil county as opposed to the areas we just discussed which shows you you don't necessarily need the strongest returns to get that rotation. it's important to watch the storm in tomorrow. we're here in mount washington looking at jones falls for a reason. we had a good amount of rain and we had near baltimore county flood warnings in effects. the flow of the jones falls is not that much less than normal and it also appears the jones falls hasn't risen that much here in mount washington but that could change later as more

rain is moving our way. meteorologist chelsea ingram is going to talk about how much is coming towards your neighborhood coming up shortly in our first warning weather segment. thank you very much. everyone though the stormy weather didn't last long it left some damage behind. our coverage continues, wjz and mike schuh are live in a hard hit neighborhood in harford county. >> good afternoon don. good afternoon everyone. for a while there it looked like harford county was going to get clobbered. at 6 a.m. in fact a group of band campers from towson at a camp there were awakened and told to take cover. mercifully most of it missed here. >> between the baltimore county line, hess road is closed. this damage part of the storm that had the county on edge. >> we were notified by the national weather service at 6:00 this morning that we were under a tornado warning. >> it was a fast moving line

with big radar returns. >> wow, has it been some kind of morning so far. >> some roads flooded. a morning to keep a watch on the sky. >> it was this really dark spot and at first i thought it was going to come across because it started going this way, but we had a cloud coming this way and one coming this way. you could see little bit of a swirl to it. i'm terrified of tornadoes. >> in the end those clouds just twisted away past harford county. >> we had a report of a tornado that touched down in the aberdeen area up around 40, but i checked with aberdeen police and we can't see any significant damage in the area. >> reporter: cecil county did get hit. there are trees down in that area. and also the harford community college is closed for the day due to a power outage, though we cannot confirm that that was weather related. i'm mike schuh reporting live from harford county back to you. >> remember to stay with wjz and first warning weather whenever it gets stormy. for your own live look at

doppler weather radar and updated forecasts and alerts go to cbsbaltimore.com. new this noon, baltimore county police are on the scene of a murder in hillandale. it happened in the 1300 block of dalton road. police say the victim is a woman. she had been shot to death. witnesses say the suspect may still be armed. he fled in a pickup truck. detectives are going door to door searching for witnesses. anyone with information is urged to contact police. we'll have much more on this story coming up this afternoon at 4. a dundalk man who teaches in montgomery county is behind bars charged with more than a dozen counts of child sex abuse. lawrence wesley joynes teaches music in silver spring. the alleged abuse started in 2005. detectives have identified 15 female victims, 14 of them were students of his. the victims were in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade. joynes is being held at the baltimore county detention

center. in atlanta the medical examiner is identifying the baseball fan who fell to his death at turner field during a braves game. ron matz is in the newsroom with more on this. good afternoon ron. >> good afternoon don, an autopsy is being done on the body of ronald homer to determine how he died. he fell during a rain delay at last night's game between the atlanta braves and the philadelphia phillies. he was on the platform 65 feet up. he landed in a parking lot. atlanta police say the fall appears to be an accident. heavy rains led to a nearly 2- hour delay of the game. police are investigating whether those wet conditions may have contributed to the fall. don back to you. >> it's also not known at this point if alcohol was a factor in that fall. no time to spare, a security guard is being called a hero today for helping everyone inside a florida report get to safety as a giant sinkhole swallowed the building. the massive crater may be

stablizing. >> . >> t appears the sinkhole that swallowed part of this building is no longer growing. executives at the summer bay resort near orlando say tests are being done to make sure nearby structures are safe. before the building ripped apart, guest inside could hear the walls creeing. >> the third floor was starting to shift and windows were popping out. they're kind of thinking possible sinkhole but they don't know. >> richard shanley saw the ceiling sink and immediately started banging on doors. >> they opened the door they're like what's going on, are we being stricted, i said no you have to get out of the building. it's coming apart. i said please don't worry about your property. just get out. >> he helped all 105 guests get out safely. many are calling him a hero. >> i'm just an average run-of- the-mill person. i did what i had to do. >> surrounding buildings were also evacuated as a precaution.

the resort is allowing guests to go back in and collect their belongings, but the collapsed building remains off limits. >> they're basically telling families what you left there is going to stay there and no one is going in. >> the resort says there were no signs a sinkhole was developing before sunday. tests done 15 years ago showed the ground was stable. >> other buildings near the resort are being inspected to determine if they've been damaged by the 100-foot sinkhole. a group in new jersey who now call themselves the ocean 16 are claiming 1/3 of the $448 million power ball jackpot. the nine women and seven men pooled their money and they have one of three winning tickets. together they won $86 million, but after taxes each will be getting about 3.8 million. at least six of them have good use for the money. they were hard hit by superstorm sandy. the owner of the other ticket in new jersey has not stepped forward. a man in minnesota did so last

it is mostly cloudy and 76 degrees in central maryland right now. your complete first warning weather forecast is still coming up. a medical technician charged with infecting dozens of patients with hepatitis c by reusing syringes he'd used first has accepted a plea deal. he worked in hospitals in several states including four in maryland with seven of his patients testing positive for hepatitis c afterwards. the plea bargain will send him to prison for at least 30 years. a fuel pipeline in western

illinois explodes sending flames 300 feet into the air. people in eerie illinois say they heard a blast last night just after 11. the towering flames can be seen for miles, about 80 families living within a mile radius were evacuated. it was carrying a mixture of ethane and propane. fortunately no one was injured. we know the identity of the mysterious priest who suddenly appeared at a crash scene in missouri. reverend patrick dowling is covering forward to say he parade. lents was trapped in her car. the priest told them to be calm and their tools would work. shortly after lentz was rescued and doweling had disappeared. she is expected to survive her injuries. another sticky gray day, but is the stormy stuff over, meteorologist chelsea ingram is updating your first warning

80s. that's where the most unstable air is right now and dew points sitting in the mid-70s for the lower eastern shore. i think as we head into the evening hours those are the spots that are more likely to see more rainfall and the chance for a strong thunderstorm as we head into the 6:00 to around 10:00 p.m. time period. current winds are out of the west, all thanks to a cold front beginning to push through the region. that's going to bring us some really nice dry air, and that's where all of this dry clear air is going to be pushing in. we had quite a bit of showers, quite a bit of thunderstorms roll through earlier this morning. the good news is heading into the afternoon it's not going to be as widespread as it was this morning. as i mentioned again, most likely the sea showers and thunderstorms in southern maryland and on the eastern shore heading into the evening hours. today through thursday, though, that high pressure system's going to work its way in. we'll be very breezy tomorrow as the cold front exits the region. less humid, very comfortable. that's going to take us through the weekend as well.
