investigation involving jones. early this morning he was hit in a whole different way with a giant champane bottle. course to sources that spoke to wjla jones was on board a party bus around 3:00 in morning in washington, d.c. he was out celebrating offensive tackle bryant mckinney's birthday with multiple team members. a fight reportedly broke out on that bus an sources say an exotic dancer hit jones over the head with a giant champane bottle like this one. jones was bleeding from the head but refused treatment. during his press conference today, coach john harbaugh said he was disappointed about the report and said he would speak to jones. >> it's something i don't want

to be known for. i would hope it's not something those guys would want to be known for. it's nothing to be proud of. >> reporter: jones has been sidelined since the first game of the season. ravens fishes tell wjz both jones and mckinney were at the under armour training center today. coach harbaugh told reporters he had spoken to the team regarding what happened early this morning telling them nothing good happens after midnight. denise. >> thank you, megan. jones is expected to be out for about a month because of his knee injury. no charges against the father who was arrested for raising questions but what was caught on camera is raising eyebrows. >> reporter: the blow up was over a new standardized curriculum. and it has some parents downright frustrated. parent adam small decided to speak up rather than write down his questions at a town hall style meeting with baltimore

county school officials. that's when a security officer stepped in flashing his police badge. >> you're sitting here like cows, you have questions. they don't want to do it in public. >> reporter: smalls was literally pushed and pulled out of the meeting. handcuffed and charged with assaulting an officer. >> i was outraged when i saw the video of what happened to this father. >> reporter: stephanie morgan joined small in raising concerned about what's called the common core case standards. new curriculum implemented this year in math and english all designed to make sure graduating seniors meet minimum skills. maryland was one of 12 states that signed up for the program. >> what will be different, there's going to be a focus on critical thinking. on applying what they learn to

real life situations. >> reporter: what's wrong with that? >> what's wrong with that? it doesn't meet the individual learning skill of the child. if you leave the decision to standards, curriculum, teaching methods if you leave that to teachers and parents and principals. >> so as for that outspoken dad late today the baltimore county's state's attorney said that while the dad did disrupt if meeting and while the police officer did act appropriately, the state's attorney said further prosecution would not affect anything. a not guilty plea in the sex and corruption scheme inside a baltimore jail.

marry bubala has the story. >> reporter: rice pleads guilty of smuggling drugs into jail. on behalf of white, the gang's ring leader in jail. earlier this year a federal grand jury indicted 25 people including 13 officers. two other officers have already pleaded guilty in the scheme. both of those women had children by white while he was an inmate. back to you. >> white has always pleaded guilty to his role in the schemes. a five month old baby girl is dead and charges are expected in the case. police say the little girl died of asphyxiation. rochelle richie spoke with residents of the home where the little girl lived. >> reporter: hi vic, one woman we spoke with says it's a death that never should have happened. in fact, she says alcohol may have been involved. baltimore police not commenting on this investigation although they say charges are expected to be filed.

on the second floor of this home on north broadway is where 5 -month-old morrisson stopped breathing. >> she was like my baby is dead. and i was like, what? did you call 911. and when she brought her downstairs she was limp. >> reporter: very little details are being released about the baby's death. but baltimore police say they were called to the home for an unresponsive child. little riya died at the hospital. the roommate say it is mother told her she had been drinking. >> that's what she said she accidentally rolled over on the baby. she was drunk and she rolled over on the baby. >> reporter: the woman says the daughter and her mother lived in the upstairs bedroom. the little girl sleeping in the same bed as mom. neighbors with children of their own still in disbelief. >> babies need to be in a crib or in a basinet. he sleeps by himself. he can't sleep with me. he has to sleep in his bed, or he cannot sleep in me. i just not going to do it. i don't want anything to happen

to my kids. >> reporter: rochelle richie. >> of course police are not saying exactly who they plan to charge as well. we have more breaking news for you right now. an accident snarling traffic in northwest baltimore. sky chopper 13 is over the scene. captain jeff long with more, jeff. >> reporter: good evening baltimore city police and fire departments still on the scene here. this is on west northern parkway at green spring avenue. the entire eastbound intersection shut down. they're going to move at least one of these cars right away here. we did see at least one person being transported by ambulance. seemed to have minor injuries they did walk to the stretcher by themselves. you can see eastbound traffic on the left side of your screen is being forced to make a right on to green spring. and then they are having to get back on to northern parkway. heading westbound. and then eastbound or heading eastbound correction. and then westbound traffic has only one lane getting by on the

right hand side. reporting live from sky chopper 13, i'm captain jeff long, back to you. >> jeff, thank you. at least 62 people are dead in the terrorist siege of a mall in kenyan's capital city. tara mergener reports from the state department. >> reporter: loud explosions erupted. kenyan officials say government forces took control of the mall. they say two militants have been killed. 10 have been arrested and more hostages have been killed. plumes of black smoke billowed out of the skylight. at the united nations general assembly in new york, president obama talked with kenyan's president by phone. >> to the kenyan people.

we stand with them, against this terrible -- that occurred. >> reporter: the state department says they have no confirmation americans were involved with the terrorist group but do say five u.s. citizens were injured. elane escaped the massacre. the california native moved to nairobi two years ago. two of her friends were killed. >> i've had two surgeries. i'm okay, i'm lucky to be alive. >> reporter: at the state department, tara mergener. tonight president obama says the united states is providing law enforcement assistance and all the help it can to deal with the tragedy. a student at the university of maryland eastern shore is shot and wounded in an off campus incident. the victim was shot in the leg while trying to break up a

fight. the spokesperson for the university says the student was treated and released. no word if there was an arrest. an alert was sent to the school community as a precaution. political reporter pat warren reports opponent of the new gun laws rallied in annapolis today. >> reporter: the general assembly passed the laws now a committee had to approve a complicated package of regulations in order to implement those new laws. that rekindled the firearmed protests. >> licensing, fingerprinting, griping. >> it was against the wishes of the people. the people came out here in masses and still they refused to listen to us. >> reporter: craig lester was one of the thousands of protesters in rallies against gun control this yore -- year and he is back today to reregister their complaint. >> they've run amuck. they're not listening to us anymore. >> reporter: not more than the general assembly listened to each other. >> they didn't know what they were doing.

it's obvious that this bill is going to be extremely difficult to implement. >> reporter: none of the supporters expect it to be easy but that won't stop the process. >> i'm not against guns. i personally, i have a process in place that makes sense. >> reporter: opponents of the law protesting on lawyers mall this morning say none of it makes sense to them. >> so they can talk to five other firearms dealers and we'll all have a different response to one particular regulation. so if we can't understand it, how is the common you know citizen going to understand it. >> reporter: it looks like they'll just have to do their home work. the regulations were approved by the committee by a vote of 9- 6 clearing the way for the new laws to take effect next week. i'm pat warren, now back to you on tv hill. pat, thank you. the new law takes effect october 1st. one week from tomorrow. for the first time in quite a while. we will not break 70 degrees today. a live look outside right now it's officially fall and certainly it's starting to feel

like it. chelsea ingram and bob turk are updating the forecast. first here's bob. >> soon the frost will be on the pumpkin. it already was north of us. we don't see that happening soon for us. we take a look at temperatures and it's so pleasant. 64 ocean city and dc now at 67. the dewpoints 42, so many places by morning will get down to about 42. but now this morning we've got down to 51. and 50 in ocean city. tomorrow high pressure once again over the area means a beautiful sunny dry day. and that trend looks like it's going to continue for the next six or seven days the way it looks like right now. chelsea is in the outback with a wrap in what happened this summer 2013. >> reporter: that's right bob. now that the astronomical summer is over.

let's look at what happened. many of us thought it was a cool summer. but believe it or not. temperatures were pretty typical of what you would expect. this is the average temperature just about 85 degrees for the summer. highest temperature was 96 degrees. that was on july 18th. we didn't have one day in the triple digits temperature wise. we have another garagic for you. this is rain -- another garagic for you. this is rainfall. the most rain we received in the summer on a one day period was actually the last day of summer, saturday. bob will have the details coming up in your exclusive forewarning forecast. now let's go back inside. chelsea and bob thank you. we have more breaking news to tell you about right now. a serious injury to an orioles all star. sports director mark viviano with more on manny machado.

mark. we're used to dealing with violent injuries but the orioles playing this afternoon in st. petersburg florida against the tampa bay rays. we have video of a terrible injury suffered by manny ma machado in the top of the 7th inning. he was hit at the end of the game. but when running toward second base he hit the bag awkwardly and his knee would bend awkwardly. machado was down on the ground screaming in pain. he was tended to by the trainers. he was put on a stretcher and carted off the field. the extent of the injury we do not know yet. but it appears to be a serious knee injury for manny machado who made his major league debut last august and has played every game since. 287 consecutive games games. the orioles have seven regular season games to go.

a lot of players have gone on to twitter to offer their prayers for what seemed to be a very serious injury for machado. and now let's turn to football. even though flacco and the ravens offense have not played to their potential yet. they're finding other ways to win as they did yesterday against the texans. fitting that ray lewis was honored on the day the ravens defense dominated. zero touchdowns allowed. defense and doss. doss deliver add big touchdown with a punt run for a touchdown in the third quarter. doss was cut by the ravens before the season started and is taking a full advantage while filling in for jacobi jones as the return man. >> i have confident with what i can do. it's been a rocky, you know.

beautiful looking evening out there. sunny, 68 degrees in maryland. the complete warning forecast is coming up. turning off all your electronic devices may soon be a thing of the past. the faa council is looking to relax flying conditions. >> reporter: until now, passengers have been having to turn off their electronic devices and that frustrates many a lot. >> reporter: my i pad, my laptop and of course my iphone. i've seen guys with ipods the whole nine yards. >> reporter: generally passengers have to turn off all devices during landing and take off. but because so many people are so technically dependent the faa is looking into relaxing

some of its inflight electronics restrictions. the advisory councils recommendations are expected this week. >> i think you're going to see a liberalization of the uses of these electronic devices. >> reporter: according to a report from the new york times, there will be a relaxation of procedures. pilots have reported hundreds of incidents where they believe a device may have interfered with the plane's instruments. but so far there's no hard evidence to support that. >> there's actually been a good deal of study done. it's neither confirmed or denied the fact that electromagnetic interference can affect the plane's performance. >> i think people would be happier with it. but if it affects safety, then

fall arrives and it feels exactly like october. it's not even the end of the september. temperatures running six, seven, 8 degrees cooler than they should be on this date. right now we're 66 here. 48 out in oakland. it's going to be down in the 30s out there tonight. they have a few clouds out there. 63 over the hill, down the hill there in cumberland. 60, the big difference there in just 50 miles or so. 64 in ocean city. and a 67 over in washington. locally low to mid-60s just

very pleasant fall conditions. yes, when you go out tonight take a jacket or a sweatshirt. you'll need it. light southwest winds. again slowly calm down overnight. still 12 in dc and hagersfield. big area of high pressure. huge dome of fair weather over the eastern united states. south of us where the dividing line between summer basically and fall. showers and thunderstorms across north central florida. and something causing some rain there in the keys. we'll keep watching that. could be some tropical development in the gulf of mexico the last few days. but right now things are very quiet. shower activity to the west. unfortunately, they've seen more rain today in portions of the colorado. they may see some snow in the higher elevations of the rockies in the next few days. for us, eventually our winds begin to turn more to the south- southwest. temperatures will go up a few degrees. but nothing extreme.

it is just after 6:30, 66 degrees with the sun setting. good evening thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the seize continues at that upscale shopping mall in kenya. thousands of people are dead, some americans are injured. there are reports some of the terrorists are also americans. tory dunan has the story. >> do we have the helmet? where's the helmet. >> reporter: days later and gunfire can still be heard. the billowing smoke can still be seen. the siege started when the terrorists stormed into the shopping mall. five americans are injured. most of those who lost their lives are kenyan. >> a lot of casualties being

rushed in. they were hurt. different parts of the body. we are just trying to get them in and treat them as fast as we could. a lot of bodies are being transported there as well. >> reporter: the terrorist group al-shabab is claiming responsibility. >> we've seen three or perhaps four american citizens conduct suicide operations. >> reporter: more than 10 kenyan defense force soldiers are reported injured. those who escaped the mall describe the horrific scene inside. >> bullets were running over my head. >> it shattered my head but luckily it hit the wall ahead of me. >> reporter: president obama promises to help out kenya in

whatever way possible. the latest in the surge of violence is rocking chicago. >> two men are in custody in connection of a mass shooting. the men both 22 years old are not charged yet. but police believe they are the ones who opened fire. last thursday night, 13 people were struck by bullets while watching a basketball game at a south side park. one of the victims was a 3-year- old boy who was shot in the face. the child is expected to fully he cover but he will need plastic surgery. no word yet on the motive for the shooting. vic, back to you. >> all of the other victims are expected to recover as well. amanda knox is defending her decision not to return to italy to face a retrial in the murder of her roommate six years ago. she spoke to a british television station about the case. van marsh reports from london. >> reporter: amanda knox told british tv anchor she is to scared to go back to italy to be tried again for murder. >> i would do anything to prove

my innocence. >> reporter: knox spent four years in an italian prison for the murder of her roommate curcher. her and her italian boyfriend were acquitted in september, now the court wants them back. >> people might say why don't you go back if you're innocent and you have nothing to fear or nothing to hide. why would you not go back? >> nothing to fear. i have plenty to fear. because i was already imprisoned wrongfully. i was already convicted wrongfully. >> reporter: knox spoke from seattle. now she says she can't afford to return to italy for the entire trial. her lawyers will represent her instead. the 26-year-old was asked if she would take a lie detector test. >> a lie detector test would be just, i would be fine with that. >> reporter: the only person behind bars for curcher's murder was rudy luede.

he is serving a 16 year sentence. alfonso van marsh. >> the italian supreme court has ordered a retrial because it said there was inconsistencies in the court's decision to set knox free. police were called to a home in rosedale early sunday morning where they found wutog dead inside. the shots were fire from inside the home. tsa officers at bwi catch a woman trying to sneak a stun gun through security. an inspector spotted this stun gun in the woman's bag. it's the second stun gun found in just three days. the woman was sited. the latest on the uproar that has put a parent in the

one of two opening this week. thanks to $10 million from the wineburg foundation. >> we expect our children to succeed. and expectations do in fact, become behavior. >> reporter: an additional $3 million from the state goes toward creating these green spaces for outdoor reading. >> we are not doing enough for our children. we have to do better. and we have to do better together. >> reporter: in addition to the beautiful indoor space, there's plenty to read with books and e readers ready for students. >> i think it'll be great to use especially during projects for school. great to just read books. >> in addition to the library, the wineburg foundation has also partner with the maryland food bank. they're providing food pantries to public school children.

a powerful storm pummels

now there's something else that's not so good. >> not at all. mark is live at the training complex. with news about manny machado. >> out here with the ravens where there's good news with two wins in a row. but for the baseball birds, some bad news with an injury to manny machado. it happened this morning. in the top of the 7th inning. manny machado and we should mention the orioles play off hopes have faded. the orioles have lost four straight. machado's second hit of the game. as he reaches the base he falling awkwardly. the orioles young third baseman one of the young players in all of the major leagues has played in 207 consecutive games since

he made his debut last year. there has not been a report as to the severity of the injury to machado. chris davis has hit a home run for the orioles. now to the ravens where there are also injury concerns when it comes to football. the ravens play in buffalo next. cody likely to be with a knee injury. but there's good news about running back ray rice. the ravens did use a strong effort by their defense to pull off an impressive win over the visiting houston texans linebacker daryl smith made that game changing play in the second quarter with the interception to be carried into the end zone for a touchdown. they never trailed after that interception. daryl smith making an impact in
