fiery and fran frantic frantic. a car evading police crashes and killings three people. >> why the police department's under scrutiny tonight. hello, everyone. >> here is what people are talking about tonight. >> a horrific car crash in northeast baltimore. three people are dead and a four is in critical condition. many are asking if a police chase may have led to the crash. >> reporter: police admit the officers were following one car that slammed into another car that happened to be passing through this busy intersection.

[ sirens ]. >> reporter: we obtained this video which shows fire erupting if both of the cars involved in the crash. rescue crews rushed to save one woman trapped inside the white jeep and two men trapped inside a burning honda accord. >> i was up in my room and i heard this big boom and tires screech. >> reporter: angela reeves and her husband raced out their door and started taking these dramatic pictures seconds aft crash. >> a cop car was already here. helicopters were circling. >> reporter: plain clothed officers had been following the honda accord from harper road and east 25th street where the offices witnessed some type of criminal activity. >> the vehicle did not yield to the officers. >> reporter: as the accord fled from police it broad sided another car. it happened in this intersection and the force of the impact was so strong is sent these vehicles

down the slope where this came to rest. >> reporter: we spoke with paul black as rescuers were pulling a woman out of a car. she died. >> he was dazed. he didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: police now trying to determine if their undercover officers were chasing a suspect in violation of the department's restrictive pursuit policy. >> we have more questions than answers. >> reporter: we're told the driver of the jeep is in critical condition. the police investigation continues. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. tonight police are identifying the two people who died in the pursuit vehicle as 26-year-old devell johns and 28-year-old terrell young. no word yet on the third victim's identity. racing the clock. rescuers were frederick county worked frantically to save a man trapped in a trench as the water

rises around him. meghan mccorkell has the operation that took 65 emergency responders. >> reporter: that man was working on a municipal water main when a pipe burst and water started surrounding him. water and mud rise around a construction worker trapped in a trench. >> it was a pretty dangerous situation. he was up to here. >> reporter: rescue officials say the 49-year-old man was working on a municipal water main near eagle head drive in new market when a pipe burst after 3:00. >> that caused some of the debris around the sides and water start to cave in on him. >> reporter: water was cut off to the area, as heavy equipment was brought in to shore up the trench, a tedious process, then firefighters could work to free the man's legs. teams from howard and montgomery counties were called out to help in the rescue.

>> there were people from howard and montgomery and frederick and they kept coming and coming. >> reporter: wjz was there more than three hours later as emergency crews finally free the man. the fire chief says he was exhausted but remained stable as he was loaded into an ambulance. we've learned the injured worker is from pennsylvania. he's being treated here at shock trauma tonight. meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you, meghan. the fire chief credits the responders who first arrived on the scene for their quick thinking in saving that man's life. the navy wants changes to the way background checks are done in the wake of the navy yard shooting. aaron alexis lied by a previous arrest for a gun related incident. they are asking the pentagon to get all police records for potential employees and contractors. the massacre in kenya is

over. that is according to the kenyan president as he declares victory over terrorist who is took control of an upscale shopping mall and killed more than 60 people inside. 11 suspects are under arrest and tonight we're learning more about their murderous mission. kenya's president says his forces have defeated the terrorists who attacked nairobi's largest shopping mall killing more than 60 people. >> they wanted to destroy the essential character of our society. they failed. >> 11 militants are in custody. this grainy photos show two of the gunman. six soldiers died on the fourth day of the siege. al-shabab militants are claiming responsibility calling it revenge for kenyan attacks on their group in neighboring somalia. >> we don't see europeans and americans because we're not

weak. >> now, three floors of the mall have now collapsed and some bodies are still believed to be trapped in the rubble. and tonight we learned one of those things was as johns hopkins graduate, eight months pregnant. she is mourned by former classmates and former presidents. >> reporter: gunfire echoed sending hundreds of people running for their lives. in the mall, 33-year-old elif yavuz and her partner ross langdon. they would both be shot dead. yavuz was 8 months pregnant. she dedicated her live to improving the lives of others. president clinton acknowledged her work she did with the clinton foundation looking for ways to fight malaria in africa. >> i hope they can be a metaphor for what we're all about.

i ask you to remember them and their families. >> reporter: after finishing her european studies at johns hopkins she earned a doctorate in public health from harvard. >> it was shocking. that was the word in a lot of e-mails being echanged. >> reporter: her husband designed an hiv hospital pro bono in east africa. friends are still stunned about the violence erupted and who is of life so close to home. yavuz was expected to deliver in two weeks. . >> now, westgate mall is popular with foreigners living in kenya. it has stores such as nike and adidas. maryland's attorney general is running for governor. >> i would like to introduce to all of you my father and the next governor, gansler.

>> he kicked off his campaign today. he is a former montgomery county states attorney and is serving a second term as attorney general: anne arundel county pays out more than $100,000 to settle a harassment lawsuit against its former executive john leopold. he was a key assistant to leopold. we have the victory for karla hamner tonight. >> reporter: that's right. anne arundel county decided to settle its case with karla hamner; however, the disgraced former county executive is only digging in his heels. the woman who claimed she was constantly harassed by then county executive john leopold settles her case against him and anne arundel county. karla hamner will receive $110,000 plus attorneys fees. >> it's been very difficult and

emotional. >> reporter: it's vindication for hamner who was leopold's assistant. she said he made unwanted sexual advances, screamed at her because of her hair style and fired her after she complained. >> it's been a long, hard battle. >> reporter: leopold was convicted of personal misconduct in january of this year. prosecutors say he forced employees to carry out his personal tasks like handling campaign signs and emptying his catheter bag. leopold resigned from office and served 30 days in jail. we contacted leopold's attorney who told us they're appealing his criminal conviction. >> there's no amount of money that you can attach to what i've been through to make everything okay. >> reporter: and anne arundel county executive laura knewman is pleased the case has been resolved. she called it a sordid chapter in the county's history. a federal lawsuit by another

. it is clear and 53 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. in california, firefighters are gaining ground on a

wildfire. some evacuations have been ordered but so far there's no property damage. the fire started last night and has scorched nearly 200 acres. the cause has not yet been determined. well, a family has to be rescued after a chain reaction crash sends their car into a canal in st. petersburg. police say a bystander pulled out a man and his two young sons from their vehicle. a speeding suv started the accident which involved three vehicles including a bus. several people were hospitalized but their injuries are nonlife threatening. eight prisoners escaped from a transport van in oklahoma. all of them have been recaptured. the van stopped to take an ill prisoner to the hospital. that's when one of the prisoners kicked out a partition and got behind the wheel. the keys were in the van and it may have been running. the oklahoma patrol says the van

was found a mile down the road. a private company was responsible for the transportation. a toddler in california is mauled by a pack of dogs. samuel samudyo was found bloody and naked in thing about yard. they believe he crawled out of a window was was attacked by dogs. the grandmother was arrested because she owned the animals and an uncle is also in custody. a fishing trip nearly kills two brothers in new jersey. they desperately call for help moments before their boat sinks. this is the dramatic rescue by the coast guard. >> mayday, mayday. >> how many people on board. >> i'm at [ inaudible ]. >> just after that frantic call

two brothers' boat capsized in the ocean. >> two people went into the water. they were unable to get rescue equipment on themselves so the rescue equipment was floating in the water. >> cory reninger and another received the call at their light station. listen again as the fishermen desperate for help yelled out their coordinates letting the rescuers know their position. >> [ inaudible ]. >> and then after that the radio went silent. >> reporter: that call along with a distress beacon moved likely saves the brothers' lives. rescuers were able to go to the brothers' exact location. a good samaritan a board a nearby boat confirmed two people were in the water.

>> the other was too weak to climb on board of boat. so we threw him a line and we were able to pull him on board our boat. >> reporter: the fishermen were eight miles out to sea when they capsized. >> the two men expressed their gratitude and asked to borrow a phone to tell their families they were okay. more than a tasty entrie. this afternoon at the interer harbor in baltimore, baltimore bill scuttled his way toward a long-range forecast. he had to choose between a warm fall and an early winter. he chose the plank labelled warm fall. he went right into the water so you can say he's committed to his forecast and has not been seen since by the way. >> run for your life, bill! >> he's committed to a steam pot and you know it.

ground. this can be a huge difference from here down to the ground, believe it or not. cold air sinks, that's where it sits at ground level. south of us, quite a bit of rain. still over central florida, continues down there. and a batch of rain here over northern louisiana, west tennessee, mississippi, that's moving to the southeast. south of our region, across the southeast. we have high pressure in control. nice weather will continue. looks like pretty much for the rest of the week. no big changes heading our way as a few clouds out of the south and west of us may be in our skies tomorrow, but all in all it continues to be very pleasant, nice temperatures, pleasant cool nights, lots of sunshine, not really anything in the way of rain at this point. north winds in the bay 5 to 10 knots. nights and days now are 12 hours long, pretty much that's why we have fall is in even days and

rest and rehab they believe he should be ready for spring training in march. machado was in the dugout for tonight's series opener with the toronto blue jays. he's out for the rest of this season missing his first game since his big league debut last august. with or without machado the os offense has slumped for a month. brian roberts would do his best to pick them up in the 3rd inning with this home run, solo shot. mccloud homered after that and got a strong start from pitcher chris tillman. nine strikeouts. he allowed one run in seven innings. toronto battled back, and in the tenth inning they went ahead, cleveland won, and the os are

now out of it. his former team lacked leadership now that he and ed reed left the ravens. lewis said the jones incident could have been prevented with better leadership. there's no doubt about how well the ravens are playing on defense without lewis and reed. players i talked to say they are finding their way after the greats have moved on. >> the time that these guys have spent, ed reed, ray lewis, in terms of their leadership and play, guys have to step up. younger guys are looking around who is that going to be. >> the show goes on. new year, new team, and we have a great guys, ozzie newsom and the rest of the organization
