i'm jessica kartalija. here's what people are talking about today. we have breaking news out of charles county. a school bus with students on board is hit head on. several students are injured. a cadillac collided with the bus. 40 students were on board from north point high. five were taken by ambulance from the scene. the other 35 students were taken to the hospital as a precaution. the driver of the cadillac, a 47-year-old woman, was hurt and flown to the hospital. the cause of the crash is under investigation. we'll have the latest on this breaking story coming up tonight at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. two men killed and the suspect vehicle are identified while one person continues to fight for life at shock trauma. wjz is live at city police head quarters. derek valcourt has the latest. good afternoon, derek. >> reporter: good afternoon. the real question a lot of people are asking today, is was

this crash the result of a police chase. an actual pursuit with lights and sirens. so far police haven't said. >> this video obtained by wjz shows the two cars in flames with rescue crews trying but unsuccessfully to save the lives of two men trapped inside the honda accord and one woman in a white jeep. it happened at northern parkway and york road. >> a cop car was sitting out here when we came outside. helicopters were circling. that's when the whole scene unfolded. everything was like on fire. there was a car, the jeep, everything was on fire. >> police now admit plain clothed officers in an unmarked car saw the honda accord engaged in some sort of criminal activity. >> they attempted to stop the vehicle. the vehicle did not yield to the officers. the officers followed the vehicle for some time, which got them to the intersection of northern

parkway and york. >> that's where the accord apparently speeding slammed into the white jeep which just happened to be crossing through the intersection at that exact moment. three people dead. only the driver of the jeep survived d though badly injured. . >> the extent of the damage and the lives lost, it's a tragedy that we're investigating seriously. >> mayor blake said she will be looking at lessons police can learn from it. >> when we take at the look of the investigation we're taking a look at it with that lens, to say are there bigger, broader issues here. >> reporter: police have released the identity of the two men who were in the honda accord. they were davel jones, 26 years old and 30-year-old tavon brown. police have not released the identity of the

woman who died in the jeep. >> thank you. the driver of the jeep remains in critical condition. it was a race against time. a man trapped in a mud filled trench in frederick county. mary is live with the latest in the news room. >> reporter: the dramatic scene unfolded when a water pipe broke. when rescuers arrived the construction worker, a 49-year-old pennsylvania man, was up to his neck in water, mud and construction debris. rescue crews focused on keeping the man's airway open. then they shut off their water that was filling the trench. the man was then wrapped in a thermal blanket while rescuers spent hours shoring up the hole to get him out. he was pulled just after 6:00 and flown to shock trauma. >> thank you. the man's condition and name are not being released. with the deadly mall siege finally over in kenya militants are now launching allegations online blaming government troops

for many of the deaths. kenyan authorities say it's a bunch of lies. the report for wjz. >> authorities are de nying claims they used chemical weapons to end the attack at a shopping mall. in a twitter message from militants they accuse kenyan forces of using gas and demolishing part of the mall, burying more than 100 hostages. the government blamed the militants were setting the fire. new images from the siege show a policeman coaxing her mother and child from hiding. there are reports that as a helicopter hovered over head mill substantiates started executing hostages. some say they let muslim leave. >> i just told them to leave me alone. they let me go.

>> a grenade blue blew off part of this man's foot. kenya said it has 10 suspects in custody, five died in the assault. a kenyan official said it's too soon to confirm the attackers nationalities, hinting some may still be buried inside. >> american forensic teams are helping kenyan investigators search through the burned out rubble for more evidence. new details about the navy yard masker will be revealed today. the fbi is holding a briefing to say what they're learning. aaron alexis, a 34-year-old navy reservist was killed the attack. the fbi is working closely with a number of law enforcement agencies, including dc police. we'll have more on that briefing coming up new today at 4:00, 5:00 and 6:00. budget battle. this afternoon the senate is expected to reject a house bill that funds the government but also cuts money to pay for obamacare.
