being controlled or influenced by electromagnetic waves." this alarming video of alexis was just released, as you said, this afternoon. alexis killed 12 people, wounded several others. the fbi says he did act alone. and there was no evidence he was targeting particular people. >> reporter: there are indicaters that alexis was prepared to die during the attack, and that he accepted death as the inevitable consequence of his actions. >> now, the fbi also says phrases were etched into alexis's shotgun, reading, and i quote, end to torment, not what y'all say, and better off this way. >> alexis also wrote "my elf weapon" which is believed to refer to electromagnetic waves. we'll have more tonight at 5:00 and 6:00. the deadly mall siege in

kenya is finally over. now, militants are launching allegations online, blaming government troops for many of the deaths. alfonsoalphonso van marsh reports for wjz, kenyan officials say it is a bunch of lies. >> reporter: kenyan authorities are denying terrorist claims they used chemical weapons to end the attack at a shopping mall that killed more than 70 people. in a twitter message, the group accuses kenyan forces of using gas and demolishing part of the mall, burying more than 100 hostages. a government spokesman blamed militants for setting the fires that cause the floors to collapse. new images from the siege show a policeman, coaxing a mother and child from hiding, just after the attack started. there are also reports reports that as a helicopter hovered overhead, militants started executing hostages and tossing their bodies off the roof. some survivors say the gunmen let muslims lead. saim said he begged the

attackers for his life. >> i just told them to leave me alone. i had been injured. so they let me go. >> shrapnel in your shoulder. >> reporter: kenya says it has 10 suspects in custody. five died in the assault. kenyan officials say it is too soon to confirm the attackers' nationalities, hinting some may still be buried inside. >> american forensic teams are helping kenyan investigators search through the burned-out rubble for evidence. an intense manhunt under way in new york after a deadly workplace shooting. police say 64-year-old sang ho kim opened fire at a save energy business in garden city, long island, then ran away. one person died at the scene. another was taken to the hospital. the roosevelt field mall and area schools were put on lockdown as police search for kim. police say his motive appears to be business-related. an investigation is under

way into a triple fatal crash in the city. police identify the two men and the woman killed, while one person continues to fight for his life at shock trauma. derek valcourt has the latest. >> reporter: the real question for a lot of people here is, was this an actual police chase? a pursuit with officers using their lights and sirens. so far, police have refused to say. [ sirens ] >> reporter: this video, obtained by wjz, shows the two cars engulfed in flames, with rescue crews trying frantically but unsuccessfully to save the lives of two men trapped inside a honda accord and one woman in the intersection of a jeep. neighbors heard the crash. >> a cop car was already sitting out here. and when we came outside, helicopters were already circling. and that's when the whole scene unfolded. everything was on fire. there was a car, the jeep, everything was on fire. >> reporter: police now admit, plain clothed officers in an unmarked car, saw the honda accord, engaged in what appears to be some sort of criminal

activity. >> they attempted to stop the vehicle. the vehicle did not yield to the officers. the officers followed the vehicle for sometime. which got them to the intersection of northern parkway and york. >> that's where the accord, apparently speeding, slammed into the white jeep. in all, three people dead, only the driver of the jeep survived, though badly injured. >> the extent of the damage, certainly with the lives lost. it is a tragedy that we are investigating very seriously. >> reporter: mayor rawlings- blake said she is looking to see if there are any lessons police can learn from it. >> when we take a look at the eviction, we're taking a look with that lens to say, are there any bigger, broader issues here? >> reporter: police have identified the two men in the honda they were following who died. they are 26-year-old davel

johns and 26-year-old devon brown. the woman killed in the crash is 46-year-old angel chuwango. an investigation is under way after a school bus crash in charles county -- charles county. it sends 35 students to the hospital. police say a cadillac escalade hit the bus around 3:00 in waldorf. five students were taken by ambulance to the hospital. the rest went to the hospital as a precaution. the drivers of the suv and the bus were also hospitalized. all students attend north point high school. no word on a cause. shutdown showdown. the democratic-led senate, is trying to shoot down the latest republican effort to derail president obama's new healthcare law. tara mergener reports for wjz. before the senate could move forward, one senator had to wrap up a marathon speech. >> reporter: high noon brought an end to a surreal 21-hour show in the senate.

after delivering an all-night, railing speech against obama's healthcare law. >> obama care isn't working. >> reporter: and sometimes making pop references. >> i want to point out just a few words of wisdom from duck dynasty. >> reporter: texas republican tea party member, ted cruz, finally surrendered the stage. >> for lack of better way to define this, this was all a big waste of time. >> this was all about elevating the debate in the public and giving the american people a chance to speak. >> reporter: after cruz wrapped up his speech, the senate voted unanimously to begin debate on a republican bill that cuts off funding for the president's affordable care act, known as obama care. democrats plan to remove that provision to a budget bill sent to the senate last weefnlgt. >> reporter: both side his just days to agree on a new spending plan to avoid a partial government shutdown that looms after october 1st. >> that's the same day a major part of the president's healthcare law kicks in.

there are a few high clouds around the region. it's 76 degrees right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. crews in texas are investigating the cause of a train collision. three trains collided early this morning, east of amarillo. an eastbound train was reportedly on the track, but it was rear-ended by another eastbound train. a few seconds later, a westbound train hit the wreckage. four people were taken to the hospital. at last check, two are in critical condition. a bizarre beating case in california. police say a veteran los angeles firefighter and his mother are facing charges for attacking a woman who was feeding stray cats in their neighborhood. britney hover has the story. >> reporter: neighbors outraged over a man they say they looked up to, but now questions who he really is. >> he is a fireman.

the beating happened, yulyanne and his mother took the victim back to their house and told her that she had tripped and fell. but the beating was all caught on camera. >> the los angeles fire department says the accused firefighter is od on administrative leave while the investigation is under way. >> a down day on wall street. [ [ stock bells ringing ] it seems concern about a government shutdown is affecting the markets. dow was down 61. s&p down 5. nasdaq off 7. let's go to new york, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. american's household wealth rose this spring by about 2% to nearly $75 trillion. a jump in home values and the stock market led the rise. but not everyone is feeling the gain. home ownership has declined since the recession. and the wealthiest 10% of

households own about 80% of stocks. first class stamps could be going up by 3 cents. the financially-strapped postal service is asking an independent commission to approve the emergency rate hike. without it, the postal service says it will quickly run out of cash. it currently costs 46 cents to mail a letter. the postal service gets about half of its revenue from stamps. but fewer people are using them since they are turning to the internet. plunging more than 14% in july. amazon is turning up the heat in tablet wars. it unveiled two new twices-- devices, called kindle fire hdx. the company says they are faster and lighter than previous models. amazon also increased its previous kindle fire. for the latest, be sure to

dramatic video from the navy yard shooting in washington, d.c. it shows the shooter, moving around the building with his weapon. vinita nair has the latest for wjz. surveillance video shows aaron alexis pulling up to the navy yard in washington, d.c. and then prowling, the third and fourth floors with the sawed-off shotgun. you even see him run towards the group of people at the end of a hallway. the newly-released images don't answer why he gunned down 12 people last week. but the fbi says it now knows his mindset when he entered. >> there are indicators that alexis was prepared to die during the attack. and that he accepted death as the inevitable consequence of his actions upon. >> reporter: the shotgun he used, sawed off on both ends had three messages etched into it. not what y' all say, on one. one side read, better off this way, my e.l.f. weapon. >> alexis held a delusional belief that he was being

controlled or influenced by extremely low frequency -- or e.l.f., electromagnetic waves. >> reporter: investigators say the 34-year-old navy reservist and i.t. contractor had a well- documented history of meptdal health issues. they -- mental health issues. they say there was no indication that alexis was targeting anyone specific when he opened fire. in new york, vinita nair, wjz eyewitness news. >> two were laid to rest. one was the father of two. the other was a father of five. asiana airlines response to this summer's deadly crash. kai has more on what they're reviewing. >> reporter: in the first investigation of its kind, federal transportation officials are reviewing whether asiana airlines failed to meet certain legal obligations to the families of passengers. three people died and dozens were hurt, when flight 214 clipped a sea wall while

landing at the airport in july. under u.s. law. asiano was required to provide a range of services to family members, including a toll-free number, transportation, as well as lodging. and associated press found the press review was a little more than three hours after the crash. and the airline's family assistance plan hadn't been updated since 2004. >> asiana declined to discuss the airline's airline's family assistant plan, other than to say it publicized toll-free numbers in the u.s. and china. a pennsylvania construction worker remains hospitalized, after being rescued from a collapsed trench in frederick county. now, the unidentified 49-year- old man was up to has neck in water, mud and construction debris, in the lake linganore subdistrict or division in new market. this happened after a water pipe broke. after three hours, he was freed and flown to shock trauma. and the extent of his injuries and current condition, unknown.

the search is on in harford county, for two men accused of robbing a bank at gunpoint. sheriff's detectives say these men robbed the store. they displayed handguns. the tellers gave them an undisclosed amount of cash and they fled. no one was injured. anyone with information is asked to call the harford county sheriff's office. eat -- cigarettes that explode in your face. concern is pushing attorneys general from 40 states to call on the fda to regulate them. pamela brown has more. >> he was screaming and saying, mom,mom, get me. >> reporter: it's an image her 3-year-old son would never forget. >> seeing your child on fire. and them scream "help me" is definitely pretty terrifying ." >> the culprit, according to barlow, britney's cigarette. she said she was charging it in her car, when suddenly --

>> on fire! >> big bang. and there's a flash and smoke everywhere. and i heard connor screaming in the back seat. >> reporter: connor suffered first- and second-degree burns but is expected to make a full recovery. still, safety experts say the incident is troubling. >> catastrophic failure in the device. fortunately, only minor burns. but painful burns. >> reporter: go it's not the first of its kind. this woman said her e-cigarette exploded inside her home while it was still charging. >> it shook the house up. i screamed. >> reporter: they obtained three different safety complaints since 2009, related to e-cigarette explosions. >> you look at the preponderance and percentage, with electronic evidence, with 3 and almost a billion charge fist you go a year, year and a half, i don't think the numbers begat the worry at all. >> e-cigarette sales are poised to rake in $1.7 billion from an

and older for an average of six years. they found no relationship between the level of omega 3 fatty acids in their blood and cognitive ability as they got older. but the researchers said it was limited because it only measures omega 3 blood levels in the study. >> you cannot conclude from this study that having omega 3s in your diet is important for your help. >> they say nuts and fish are still good for you. >> they're important for practically all aspects of body health. particularly heart. but they may affect are the things like risks for cancers. >> reporter: julia says she and all her friends eat fish and take omega 3 supplements. >> i'm still going to continue taking it. because i think it's good for you. >> reporter: experts say tish and nuts are a healthy alternative to red meat and full fat dairy products, which are high in saturated fats. in new york, adriana diaz, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, the women in the study were part of the women's health

afternoon. yes, chelsea shooting a promo over carroll county. not sure how high they are up there, but they gotta be several hundred feet up there in a hot air balloon. looking to the west. seeing the blue ridge mountains. that's why i'm here and she's not. let's take a look at temps and upgrade. she's there. sphirks now. 60 in oakland. 70 in ocean city. and over in d.c., also 76. currently, low to mid-70s. 69 annapolis, kent island. out across central maryland. 73, close to chelsea. up in westminster. light, very light breeze. that's good for the ballooning now. out of the west/northwest. winds are not a major factor. south of us, still a lot of rain. st. petersburg, had almost 3 inches of rain today in florida. south that was area, it's cleared up a little bit. but also, a little light precip over kentucky, west virginia, and western sections of southwest virginia. that's moving off to the east. will not impact us. a few clouds coming through right now as we see outside.

if you look southeast, you see some of these clouds. but it's so dry here, this rain is never going to make it. and it's light rain anyway, for the most part, extreme southern virginia and western north carolina. once that passed you, get into another area of pleasant high pressure over the area. it's going to dominate here for the next several days, as this moves off to the east/southeast. more dry air, funneling in through the region. so just really nice, sunny, dry weather into the weekend. no real weather issues on the table. east winds, 5 knot it's the bay. sunrise, now 6:58. sets at 6:57. yes, the days and nights are identical. 12 hours each for the most part. bay temp at 73. so overnight tonight, a few high clouds here and there. otherwise, going to be patchy fog. to clear us out. 54. some upper 40s in some of the cooler neighborhoods. tomorrow, a couple of degrees warmer than today, with sunshine after morning fog. i don't think the fog will be extensive. but it will be patchy. 78 degrees tomorrow.
