. nearly a dozen vehicles in a chain-reaction crash. what led to the accident. hello again. i'm linh bui. commuters along interstate 83 north hope for an easier ride home later this afternoon after a massive ten-car pileup backed up traffic for miles and left several people injured. mike schuh has the latest. >> reporter: good afternoon, everyone. the problem with the roadway like 38 is north of hunt valley, there are very -- 83 is owe -- roadway 83 is north of hunt valley, there are very few exits. it's about eight miles into pennsylvania. >> i had people yelling into the truck at me whether i was all right. >> reporter: jordan calabrese was driving the flat bed seen here on its side when he was

hit from behind. >> all of a sudden i felt a hard bang and was being pushed forward and the truck flipped over. >> reporter: he was briefly trapped inside his truck. he managed to crawl out a window. what he saw he says looked like a war zone. it took emergency workers hours to clear the scene shutting down 83 north. >> thank goodness i live around the corner so we can just scooch around the back way. >> we were scrierving back -- driving back. crowded, an absolute mess. >> reporter: others tried to avoid the mess. others waited it out. >> try to take the bypass. >> reporter: jordan is thankful he's able to walk away if a serious accident. >> everybody said i had an angel on my shoulder. >> reporter: several people were injured. police say they'll all survive. back to you. >> hazmat teams were also called in to clean up a fuel spill at the crash scene. in prince george's county, eight rotc students recover from injuries after a car struck them in their high school parking lot.

the students were practicing military marching last night at northwestern high school. police say the sun may have gotten in the eyes of the 19- year-old driver charged with negligent driving. all eight students are expected to be okay. the democratic-led senate is ready to approve legislation averting a government shutdown tuesday. the house republican leaders are unwilling to accept the bill. tara mergener has the latest for wjz from capitol hill. >> reporter: the senate started its day with a prayer as the chaplain asked for divine intervention to help avoid a government shutdown. >> deliver us from governing by crisis. >> reporter: senators are expected to pass legislation today that would keep the government running. the funding bill then goes to the republican controlled house, but speaker john boehner says the g.o.p. will not approve the measure as is. >> i do not see that happening. >> reporter: the reason is health care. house republicans may attach changes that would cut off some funding for the president's

affordable health care act. they also want a one-year delay for the mandate requiring all americans to buy health insurance. if congress cannot reach a deal, the government will partially shut down after midnight monday and some 800,000 federal workers could be told to stay home next week. president obama put out annual e-mail this morning -- an e- mail this morning blaming far right republicans of pushing us closer to the brink. senator john mccain says compromise is in the country's best interest. >> the american people by 80 to 20 do not want the government shut down. >> reporter: the budget battle looks far from over with another right around the corner. next month congress has to decide whether or not to raise the debt ceiling. in washington, tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> the shutdown would furlough one-third of federal worker, including those at national parks and museums and the nation's capital. services considered critical to

the security of the nation's health would go on. inspections should begin by tuesday and a group of u.n. inspectors already on the ground are probing seven sites of suspected attacks, including the damascus suburb where hundreds were killed last month. last night the u.s. security council agreed on a resolution to chemically disarm syria removing the threat of a possible u.s. air strike. opponents of maryland's new gun law take one last shot at blocking legislation. ron matz is in the newsroom with details on the actions they're taking. >> reporter: hi, linh. the new maryland gun control measure gives the state some of of the tightest gun laws in the country. a lawsuit seeks to stop the law taking effect as planned on october 1 and ultimately you have a court permanently bar maryland from implementing the law. the law adds 45 guns to a list

of banned assault wep bones and limits -- weapons and limits handgun magazines to ten rounds. it also requires people to submit fingerprints in order to buy a handgun. back to you. >> thank you, ron. a number of people filed a lawsuit, including two retired veterans who are maryland residents as well as gun stores and the maryland state rifle and pistol association. in the wake of the washington navy yard shooting, thousands of employees got help coping with the massacre. counselors at the washington navy yard have helped more than 6,000 employees. eight been ten days since the gunman killed 12 people. a former reservist with mental health issues was killed by a police officer during the shooting. it's a little bit chilly this afternoon. here's a live look outside. gray skies, a little bit of sunshine. what's in store for the weekend, though. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. good afternoon, tim. good afternoon. clouds have blocked out the sun just a little bit so that

chilly feel that linh is talking about is because we don't have blazing sun shining down on us. but it is still a comfortable afternoon of course. we're looking at visible satellite showing there are some clouds out there. just some very thin ones. you can still see right on through them. as the clouds start to break up, we'll start to see the temperatures go up. we'll start to see spikes through the afternoon. 66 degrees right now at bwi marshal. 71 in ocean city. 67 in elkton and 63 in oakton. high pressure will again dominate our forecast as the jet stream lifts far enough up to the north that it stuarts to -- that it starts to push some of the cooler air up. it keeps rain away both to the west and some down off the coast and down to the south. so we'll look for another nice weekend. how warm will it get and how nice will the conditions get for us for this last weekend of september? we'll have the complete first warning forecast coming up in just a few moments. >> thanks, tim. one of baltimore's iconic landmarks reopens its doors. the home of edgar alan poe will once again welcome visitors on

partly cloudy and 66 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a massive rescue effort is happening right now in india after a five-story building collapsed. rescuers are digging through the debris searching for survivors. officials still don't know why the residential building in mumbai collapsed. so far they pulled about 20 people from the rubble including a young boy. at least eight people were killed. dozens were injured and more than 100 are feared trapped. some nervous moments for travelers on a seattle-bound united airlines flight. the airline says the flight made an emergency landing in boise, idaho last night after the unidentified pilot had a heart attack. passengers say several people

on board were quick to help out. >> some people helped give him cpr all the way down. and then they got the emts on there and got him off. >> boise airport officials say the pilot was still alive when he arrived at the hospital but was later pronounced dead. the flight made it safely to its final destination. the bankrupt city of detroit gets some help from the federal government. the obama administration is working with city leaders and local partners and they've announced roughly $300 million in aid. the money will go toward demolishing abandoned buildings, improving public safety and fixing transportation. the city's long-term debt is believed to be about $18 billion. happy birthday, goggle. the search engine turns 15 today. and the cosell greats with a makeover. changes include a better search formula with richer answers. there are also new results for song and music searches.

frisbee or something. fetch. we're looking at temperatures a little on the cool side this afternoon. because of the cloud cover. so we're blocking out the sun just a little bit. the east flow from off the ocean and the bay depending how far in you are is bringing in some of the moisture that's contributing to the cloud cover. so what we're dealing with right now are temperatures around the region in the 60s. we're still going to go up through the afternoon. 17 ocean city. we're 69 in elkton. 66bwi marshal. 63 in oakland. around the immediate metro area 68 in bel air. 68 in rock hall. 66 the number on kent island and in annapolis. winds coming in from the east just around 5 miles per hour across central maryland. the easterly flow is pretty persistent from ocean city toward easton to the patuxent river and up toward washington, d.c. what we're seeing is the flow bringing in the moisture from off the water but we're going to have high pressure still dominating our forecast overall. we're still under this dome of high pressure. so the dry and pleasant conditions stay with us. we're not looking for any rain

associated with these clouds. they're just kind of shielding the sun just for right now. this is the notch we have carved out here with this high pressure. this is the next rain maker that could be moving into the region sunday into monday. that is going to bring with it a chance of showers. as you see this disturbance off the coast is pushing away. that's going to take the cloud cover with it. this is really your forecast for the next five days or so the weekend is gorgeous for us and the ravens up around buffalo. they're going to be under just a little bit cooler conditions than we are. the rain will move in. much will fall apart as the front gets closer. it will move into this drier air. a lot is going to dissipate but we could see again the chance for sprinkles sunday into monday. then our temperatures continue to go right on up. we'll be in the 80-degree range heading into the next five days. 6:54 your sunset time. no advisories on the bay. a northeast wind 5 to 10 knots. 105 is the next high tide at fort mchenry. clouds breaking through the sun. that will be the pattern through the afternoon.

in today's wjz health watch, more kids than ever were vaccinated against the flu last year but health officials say there's room for improvement. according to the centers for disease control nearly 50% of children got the flu shot or nasal spray in 2012, a big boost from previous years but rates are lagging in pregnant women and nursing home employees. the cdc recommends the flu vaccine for nearly everyone six months old and older. some manic depress sanities may help some patients with a dangerous form of lung cancer. they search for approved drugs that might treat small cell long cancer. surprisingly the program picked an older class of antidepress sanities and in lab test it is was able to kill cancer cells.
