good evening. we begin with breaking news tonight out of hartford county. a barricade situation reported along eerie street. police are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. they say they responded to a call about a fight but could not find the scene and began knocking on doors. that's when they found a man barricade inside a house. negotiations went on for two to three hours before the suspect was found dead. police are trying to determine if it was a self-inflighted wound or if it was police involved. our other big story tonight, shutdown showdown. senate democrats and house republicans appear deadlocked in the latest budget battle. and if there is no deal, the

government about partially shut down on tuesday. tara mergener has the latest from capitol hill. >> reporter: house republicans are working into the night and singing a familiar tune. >> what is and what should never be. >> reporter: the gop appears closed to approving funding to keep the government running. but they are also adding changes to the affordable care act, including a one-year delay for the mandate requiring all americans to buy health insurance. >> obamacare is not ready and the delay is clearly essential. >> we are going to give obama and his administration a little bit more time to get it right. >> reporter: this would be the second time the house approved a spending bill that targets healthcare. last time senate democrats rejected it and vowed to do it again. the white house says the president will veto it. if the two sides can't agree on healthcare the bill won't go through and the government will start a partial shutdown on

tuesday. house democrat israel doesn't believe congress will reach a deal in time. >> this government is hurdling towards a shutdown and the american people deserve better. >> reporter: if there is a shutdown national parks and passport offices will close. applications for government insured mortgages would be put on hold. but most government functions will continue, including delivery of the mail and social security checks. airport screeners and the military would stay on the job, and so would members of congress. in washington tara mergener, wjz eyewitness news. >> if the government shuts down some 800,000 federal workers could be told to stay home next week. the state department reissues a warning for americans traveling to kenya due to the fear of another attack. this attack in my roby was, quote, the premiere of act one. dozens held a candlelight vigil

today remembering the 67 people killed a week ago. eight people are held in connection to the attack. meanwhile, in syria more chemical weapons may have been found one day after the united nations approved a resolution to destroy the country's arsenal. a u.n. chemical team was seen leaving a hotel room today. they are investigating seven cases of alleged chemical and biological weapons use including three incidents around damascus around the august 21 attack. closer to home a carol county man has been laid rest. he was one of 12 people shot and killed at the washington navy yard last week. wjz is live. christie ileto has the final good-bye. >> reporter: lin, richardsonard ridgell was protecting 2,000 workers when he was gunned down. tonight his family and friends are remembering a hero.

bagpipes play while officers carry richard ridgell's coffin out saturday. a husband, father, and friend to many, ridgell, who went by mike, is one of 12. gunned down at the washington navy yard earlier this month. >> there is no sense or reason or why. >> reporter: the 52-year-old's family spoke with us days following the shooting. officials say ridgell died trying to keep aaron alexis from leaving the building and taking more lives. vice admiral william lardis set up the services. he says for that sacrifice we, his navy family, honor him and we will never forget him. >> i know for a fact he would have done his best. >> reporter: before ridgell worked at the navy yard he spent 17 years as maryland state trooper and served three years in iraq as a contract security worker. >> he was proud of a lot in his life. but i think he told us his proudest thing was being a good dad. of being supportive. >> reporter: those on the

softball team he coached plan to remember his positive outlook on life. >> he always made me smile and i loved being around him. >> reporter: and while the country lays to rest a fallen hero his wife and three daughters say good bye to a man who they simply called dad. you can head to our website at cbsbaltimore.com for more information. >> thank you, christie. and a service was held for another victim of the navy yard shooting today. sylvia frazier from waldorf was 53 years old. a pakistani teen shot last year is now a harvard university honoree. she was presented a humanitarian award for her bravery and powerful message. she spoke to the crowd about what this honor means to her. >> people consider themselves powerful just because of having guns this their hands, but i

think i am powerful if i am empower myself with education and with knowledge. >> now, she originally wanted to be a doctor, but now she is leaning towards politics. she wants to continue her message of education and peace. here at home baltimore county police identified three women charged with robbing a bank in essex. sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene yesterday afternoon. it happened at the baltimore county savings bank on eastern boulevard. the woman handed the teller a note implying they had a bomb, then drove off with the money. but they were stopped a short distance away. the women are being held on $350,000 bail. a purple parade. a 2,000 walkers march the inner harbor to end lupus. our own chris gillette owe was there it had. the lupus foundation of america helps 35,000 paints in the maryland-virginia area. and walkers today raised money to support free services for

lupus patients. proceeds also went to the largest patient education program in the country at johns hopkins university. it's a great weekend for baltimore. every hotel booked, thousands of visitors in town and stores seeing a big boost. as gigi barnett explains conventions, sporting events and street fairs are raking in the cash. >> reporter: this weekend the baltimore convention center is packed as the national product expo east, one of the city's largest trade shows, is in town. it draws thousands of visitors from across the country every year. >> i have met a couple of people that registered late and couldn't get a hotel room. >> reporter: almost all of the city's 9500 rooms were snapped up fast. >> good-bye! >> reporter: with the red sox in town tickets at camden yards will sell quickly, too. the baseball match-up between baltimore and boston pulls in the big crowd. >> we come down every year. we like walking near the harbor. good time down it here.

>> reporter: for downtown businesses that signals one thing, and that is the start of the fall tourism season is off to a pretty good start. >> it's hard to put a dollar figure on it. any time you are selling out the hotel community it is big dollars. i mean, millions of dollars obviously. >> reporter: tom newnan runs visit baltimore. he says adding the baltimore book festival and a mummy exhibit at the science center and this weekend's entertainment lineup will rake in even more dollars to the city. if businesses think it's good now, newnan says wait until next year. >> we have the lacrosse final four going o ohio state navy over labor day and army-navy football game. >> and with so many visitors and events in town there are several road closures planned. the city says the best way to get around is by taking public transportation. coming up on wjz's eyewitness news, snowy weather

it is partly cloudy and 60 trees in central maryland right now. the complete forecast is coming up. a rare sight for september. early season snow met trouble for drivers in denver. the wintery weather caused multiple crashes and closed parts of interstate 70. traffic was backed up for miles. this early snow though did not set any records. on september 3rd, 1961, more than 4 inches of snow fell in denver. results released. it has been three months since a deadly wildfire in arizona. 19 elite firefighters were killed. now the state has released new information. it was the deadliest day for firefighters in the serious ins 9/11. the report found there was poor

communication between the hotshot firefighters and support staff. officials say the radios were programmed improperly and there was a 30-minute communication blackout just before the flames engulfed the men. in oklahoma a man is on the run right now accused of trying to run over three police officers. oklahoma city police were serving a warrant for drug complaints when they say james morgan hopped in his car, then tried to run over the officers. after a short police chase morgan crashed his car and got away on foot. authorities are still searching for him. police say he'll now face a slew of felony charges in addition to those drug complaints. a terrifying walk in the park for a mom and her baby in new york city. mary jane jarmon and her 8-month-old son were on their daily walk through henry hudson park when a strange man approached them yelling and screaming. he was also carrying a broken glass bottle. imagine how scary this. the young mom quickly grabbed a

bike pump she carried in her stroller and started swinging. >> he got me in a bear hug at one point and down on the ground. you kept hitting him and he took off. >> the mom and baby were shaken up after the attack but they are just thankful they are not hurt. new york city police also applaud the young mom for her quick actions. they are still searching for that suspect. a family dog comes to the rescue. one family says in florida their pitbull saved them from a house fire. ciara calls had her 9-month-old pitbull onyx a hero. a fire broke out early in the morning. onyx barked loud enough to wake up the family of four and thanks to him they all made it out safely. you just saw some video. onyx was burned trying to save his family, but the vets say he will make a full recovery. what great dog. it affects children and adults alike. today nearly 26 million americans fight diabetes. that's outpacing cancer, aids,

and heart disease. the but next weekend thousands in baltimore will help to find a cure. >> reporter: it is called step out the walk to stop diabetes. thousands will come to rash field at the inner harbor to raise money to find a cure. 10-year-old ashley gerber will be there with her parents. she has type 1 diabetes and is proud to be this year's youth ambassador, i like getting the word out to people and it's just fun speaking at different events. >> we are so proud of her. she is taking it on head strong and showing people that even though she has diabetes you can do whatever you want. >> reporter: ashley was diagnosed three years ago and there have been ups and downs, but she remains really active and has adjusted well to her diagnosis. she uses a small insulin pump called on omni pod to regulate her condition. it's break-throughs like this that inspire so many people to walk and raise money. others are doing it to raise awareness about the other type of diabetes, type two.

if current trends condition one in three children born in maryland will develop diabetes in their lifetime. >> over 400,000 marylanders are impacted. it's an epidemic. so we're bringing awareness it to the community. we are also raising money for research programs and advocacy. >> to learn more head to our website cbsbaltimore.com. there is a link with all the information. just look under local news. the magic of grease is in baltimore county this weekend for the 40th annual saint demetrius greek festival. the festival has something for everyone whether it's delicious greek food or folk dancing. there is also plenty of shopping and exploring to do on the church grounds.

the final day of the greek festival is tomorrow. you can celebrate from noon until eight. we were just talking about greek food during the commercial break. >> yes. i was going to say they have great weather. is there ever bad weather for baklava,grros? >> so good. >> there is never a bad time for that. >> never. another great day tomorrow. so that is a good thing. >> sounds good. >> yeah, you know, we had a pretty decent day today. could hardly get rid of some of these clouds. they lingered until late in the afternoon. but the temperatures go up nicely. we haven't had any rain. so that's the tradeoff. >> that's good. no rain. >> so we are seeing a day coming down from a high of 72 degrees. 55 was the overnight low last night into this night. 73 and 53 are the normal highs and lows. we are pretty much right on target. nowhere near the records of 91 and 40. currently 60 degrees at bmi. 53 is your dewpoint. relative humidity is at 77%.

winds are calm. barometer high at 32.25. high pressure has been dominating the forecast. so if you like what we have had had over the last few days you will like what we have this coming week heading into october, believe it or not. 46 right now in oakland. 59 in elkin. 65 on the shore. 68 at bwi marshall. 55 in westminster and 58 in bel air. 60 in columbia. 59 the number in rock hall. what you are seeing here is a bit of a north and northeasterly flow still around high pressure that's up around new england. flow bringing in that clockwise air mass right around that high, and that high is going to continue to bring that in as we move into the next few days. that's why we have not been able to break the clouds. we have another low pressure system, a pretty strong coastal low that's down around the carolinas. it's also bringing in that easterly flow and that's all contributing to the moisture

that's creating the cloud deck, the cloud cover that we have had over the last several days. what we're going to have is a front moving in from the west. the low from canada drags this front front. it breaks apart as it starts to move on in. what we'll see is a chance, a very slight chance of a shower. but mostly attributed to the low off the coast. that will be into monday. sunday night into monday. but really we are not going to see much by way of this front. temperature will take a slight bit of a hit. we will go up into the mid 70s tomorrow. a bit of a hit as the front goes through on monday but then we go back up because the high really stays in place and as the high stays in place we are going to allow for warmer air to move on in. we will be from the 70s up into the easy in the first week of october. 6:52 sunset time tomorrow with sunrise officially at 7:01. no advisories on the bay with winds from the east at 5-10 knots. tonight 53 degrees. mainly clear. we are starting to lose the

three straight. sports director mark viviano looks at the match-up. >> it's easy to see how they are favored to beat the buffalo bills. the ravens are clearly a better team but there is nothing easy about winning games on the road in the nfl. there is the noise and the hostile stadium. and in the case of the buffalo bills there is a challenge of a rookie quarterback who runs a read option offense, which can be tough to defend and difficult to contain. that being said buffalo quarterback e.j. manual is a rookie and he is going up against an improving ravens defense that has not allowed a touchdown in two straight games. barring an upset the ravens plan to bring home their first road victory of the season. back to you. >> thank you, mark. and remember you can watch the ravens and bills right here on wjz. our live coverage starts tomorrow afternoon at one. and stay with wjz for our special post-game show. mark will be joined by marty, mary, and jessica. plus former raven wally williams. it's a full day of football

right here on wjz. in college football this afternoon unbeaten navy on the road taking on western kentucky. navy quarterback keenan reynolds left the game in the 2nd quarter after a hard hit. navy led 7-3 at that point but they got shut out the rest of the way. western kentucky running back antonio andrews scored two touchdowns in the second half as the hilltoppers beat and a half i have 19-7. the midshipmen will host air force next saturday. meanwhile, 13th ranked johns hopkins at home against conference foe newanberg. the blue jays trail 3-0 in the 2nd quarter but then the first of three touchdowns on the day. johns hopkins rolls 45-13 and they are now 4-0 on the year. and another local game. third ranked towson comes from behind to win at stony brook 35-21.

elsewhere, morgan state dropped their home opener to norfolk state. the next to the last game of the regular season to the orioles as they host the champion red sox tonight at camden yards. they did have a nice comeback tonight. bottom of the 8th, down by a run, steve pearce will line one just fair down the left field line. nateen mclockout comes around to score the tying run and danny valencia slides home just ahead of the throw giving the orioles the lead. jim johnson closed it out in the ninth as the orioles defeat the red sox 6-5. the final game of the regular season is tomorrow afternoon at camden yards. still to come on eyewitness news at 11, we have a story to help you wake up in the morning. how you can grab a free cup of ,
