for don and jessica. that's what people are talking about today. no deal on capitol hill. we are live with tara mergener with more. >> >>reporter: the federal government is coming to a slow down with many workers off the job and congress at a stalemate. thousands of federal workers had just a few hours in the office this morning before they were told to go home. the budget stalemate in congress has partially shut down the federal government for the first time in 17 years. a sign that the lincoln memorial is turning away visitors. lawmakers are still going at it this morning. >> the government is closed because of the issue ration ality of what is going on on the other side of the capital. >> reporter: the senate quickly rejected the latest temporary spending bill passed in the house because it includes an amendment that weakens the

health care law. republicans insist it's their constituents that want to defund the affordable care act. >> the house legislation is perfectly reasonable. it didn't have everything republicans wanted. it didn't have everything democrats wanted. but it represented a compromise. >> reporter: senate democrats and house republicans have been playing political ping-pong for days with what is normally a routine bill that funds the government for just a few months. president obama blames tea party conservatives for the impasse. >> you don't get to extract a ransom for doing your job, for doing what you are supposed to be doing anyway. >> reporter: until a deal is reached, national parks will be closed and veteran disability claims will be put on hold. congress did agree to pay the u.s. military. as the battle continues, another show down looms this month over the nation's debt limit. on capitol hill, i'm tara

mergener, back to you. thousands of federal workers will stay at home every day until the government reopens. the impasse will hit maryland especially hard. from maryland workers to federal contractors. >> we are living on the edge here. >> reporter: a government shut down has far reaching consequences statewide. dawn miner is one of hundreds that will face an indefinite furlough. >> it could be a couple of weeks. that will put me in a bind. >> reporter: if it drags on, the workers won't be the only ones feeling the pressure. >> there is risk to the business. we have to be careful. there is no guarantee if you tell employees they won't get paid for a couple of weeks they may get other jobs. >> it makes me cry. >> reporter: they own city view bar and grill. 80% of the business comes from social security workers that will stay at home until the shut down ends. they pray the government opens

everyone in the car to be -- requiring everyone in the car to be strapped in. that was a primary offense as well. maryland's tough gun laws hit the books that ban 40 different types of assault weapons and handing over fingerprints before a final sale on guns. the state is facing off about new gun laws today. gun rights advocates will be in court to block the firearm restrictions. opponents object to the addition of the 40 gun types added to the list of banned weapons. we are enjoying warmer -- warmer than usual temperatures today. here is a live look outside from skyeye chopper 13. it's mostly sunny. i would love to be on that boat right now. >> so would i. >> the mercury is about 10 degrees higher than normal. wjz is live with firntion

coverage -- first warning weather coverage. >> one day we will take a boat ride like that. >> promise. >> i promise. we are in the upper 70s. take a look at the currents across the region. 79 in d.c. still 62 in oakland but take a look at the temperature difference. the past 24 hours we are seven warmer in baltimore and 13 degrees warmer in cumberland. we will see numbers continue to climb zoo even into -- even into our wednesday. mainly high clouds, partly sunny skies. wednesday cooler air located to the north but we will be stuck in a warm air mass. so, temperatures climb into the mid-80s into wednesday afternoon. that's what we will talk about in your exclusive fir warning forecast. gigi, back to you. >> thanks. madness on motorcycles. a group of bikers go after a driver in new york city and it's caught on tape. you can see the bikers boxing in the s.u.v. as it rides down the road.

one of the motorcyclists say that they were chasing a driver because he clipped one of their riders. the angry riders kept up the dangerous play until the s.u.v. stopped. then several bikers broke through the vehicle's window with their helmets, pulled the driver out and began assaulting him. no arrests have been made. anne arundel county police need your help tracking down a woman that robbed the same bank twice in the last few weeks. these are surveillance pictures of the woman. police say she robbed the bank of glen burnie saturday morning and september 13th. if you have any information about the crimes, ann arundel county police want to speak to you. torrey smith and his new wife post a surprise picture on instagram telling the world that they are going to be parents. >> the couple posted this photo announcing we are prego using a spaghetti sauce jar as a prop. smith wrote he couldn't believe his wife got him to take the

attacked a malice month killing 67 people p. al shabab said the tack was in retaliation for sending troops to somalia. the second phase of the bp gulf spill trial continues this afternoon. the trial shifted from the causes of the deadly disaster to the company's struggle to plug the blown out well while millions of gallons of crude stretched into the gulf in the summer of 2010. bp could have capped the well sooner if they didn't ignore suggestions earlier. five hikers are dead after a massive rock slide. the hikers were on an easy trail in san isabel national forest when the rocks shifted and slid. the only survivor is a 13-year- old girl airlifted to a hospital in denver with a broken leg.

the bodies of the other hikers are still trapped underneath the rubble. >> due to the danger of the slope and the condition of the rock in there, we won't do any recovery until mid-morning tomorrow when the frost thaws out of the ground and we can hopefully kind of insure that there won't be any more rocks rolling. >> the hiking trail leads to a scenic waterfall. significant recent rains made it difficult to hike that trail although the exact cause of this slide is not yet known. four bodies are pulled from the wreckage of a small plane at an airport in santa monica. investigators finally reached the wreckage this morning after crews removed the hangar that collapsed on top of the private jet. the plane corrineed into a row of hangars after it landed sunday night. federal investigators say is the pilot did not report problems before landing. a senate panel approves the nomination of carolyn kennedy to serve as u.s. ambassador to

it's a beautiful october day but it doesn't feel like october out there. temperatures are well above normal already. in fact we are at 78 in baltimore. 79 in d.c. the normal for this time of year around 72 degrees. we will only continue to climb as we head into the afternoon and into tomorrow. this whole first week is not going to feel like october. temperatures locally from the low to mid-70s. then a few upper 70s in columbia and baltimore there. 78 degrees. winds made the shift coming out of the west in some spots. out of the north in some spots. we nonetheless are starting to filter in some of the warmer air located to our south and our west. we are going to be filtering in tropical moisture as we head

into the next couple of days. here is the big picture on satellite and radar. high pressure is controlling the weather. that will hang on pretty tight as we head into friday. things will start to change as we move into the weekend. here is how things will play out through the weekend. high pressure is in control. cooler air is located up to the north. we will be in the hot sector of the mid-atlantic then things will change into the weekend. our next rainmaker making its way into the region in your sunday afternoon and evening. tropical storm jerry, winds 45 miles per hour churning in the atlantic. spaghetti models take it back out into the atlantic. bay temperature 70. winds out of the southwest approximately 5 knots. as we head into this afternoon, expect high temperatures to be around 82 degrees. a mix of sun and clouds. tonight mainly clear 56 and then as we move into tomorrow, that will be a warm one. 86 degrees. mostly sunny skies. >> a good day for a boat ride.

in wjz health watch, doctors say pertussis is a danger for babies and it's on the rise. outbreaks are being seen in ten states. the cdc says it's because parents are refusing to vaccinate their children against the infection. the cdc says the vaccine prevents the disease in seven of ten children that get it. the fda approved a drug for breast cancer in the early stages. it is used to fight breast cancer after the disease has spread to other parts of the body but a new study shows that it can be used soon after diagnosis and works at shrinking due morse making it easier to remove them through surgery. more parents are taking infants to bed with them. the number jumped to about 13%
