now it's complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. capitol hill locked down. a chase and gunfire shaking rattled nerves in washington dc. i'm mary bubala. kai is off today. we're following breaking news from washington dc. a chase and gunfire outside the u.s. capitol. wjz is live with complete coverage. danielle nottingham is on capitol hill, linh bui is in washington and vic carter has witness reaction. let's go to danielle nottingham with the latest. >> reporter: capitol police say this appears to be an isolated incident. there are still several scenes and police are still collecting evidence. >> sources tell cbs news a woman tried to ram her car through a white house gate today. police chased the woman approximately a mile to capitol hill where security service

agents shot the woman. a capitol police officer is injured following the chase. >> we were just told that the president has been briefed on this incident, which apparently began here when the driver of the automobile tried to crash the gate on the other side of the north lawn here at the northeast entrance. >> once of our officers was struck. he appears to be conscious and breathing. >> no officers shot? >> as far as we know no officers shot. >> there was a massive police response. capitol hill was locked down. >> i dropped down to my knees. i was like where do we go. >> house and senate member s in the middle of debating about the government shutdown were told to shelter in place and stay away from windows. that warning was later lifted. police have not said why the woman struck the white house barrier. they also have not released her identity or condition. >> reporter: and cbs news has just confirmed that the woman in

the car is dead. live on capitol hill, danielle nottingham. back to you. >> thank you. come plete coverage continues with linh bui on the scene in washington with more on the chaotic situation there. linh. >> reporter: good afternoon. we are live near 3rd and constitution which is pretty much as close to the action as we can get. as you can imagine, the many of the roads surrounding the capitol building still blocked off. officers directing traffic. they've set up crime scene tape. you cannot cross. we're out here with just a ton of media as well as just near by residents doing their daily activities, riding their bikes and walking their dogs trying to see what's happening out there. as you said, it's still under investigation. police officer collecting evidence and going through what happened. out here a lot calmer, totally different than it was an hour ago when the capitol was on lock down after the shots were fired. much, much calmer. less dramatic, dress urgency.

it feels like things are more under control as they piece together the details of what happened. we will stay live and bring you the latest. linh bui, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you. witnesses describe that chaotict the capitol. complete coverage continues with jessica in the news room with more reaction. >> reporter: mary witnesses describe ducking for cover after hearing the gunshots. it took moments for a lock down order to be issued for building on capitol hill. they were ordered to lock their doors and windows and to stay away. here's what one witness described just moments ago. >> there was a black car that came from the direction of pennsylvania avenue. there was about six police cars chasing it. it came up on to the sidewalk. they cornered it. it backed up. it look ed like it had either run into a another

serious charges, including trying to hire a hitman to kill an undercover agent here in maryland. the alleged master mind went by the nickname dread pirate roberts. john blackstone has the latest on how the feds busted him. >> fbi agents entered the science fiction section of the san francisco library on tuesday and arrested this man, 29-year-old ross ulbrick. the self-proclaimed ent prez near is the master mind behind a billion dollar underground online drug market known as silk road. >> so the silk road was set up to be completely anonymous. hidden from law enforcement efforts. >> the silk road was shut down by the fbi on wednesday. those who attempted to visit instead saw this message. before it went dark the site functioned as an online marketplace, complete with shopping carts and product

description. it includes illegal drugs from heroin to cocaine and guns, fake licenses and hacking services. >> this is a website through which it's estimated $1.2 billion passed. >> it was a sophisticated operation. >> they were able to ill filtrate the site. they made purchases themselves using undercover identities. >> according to the fbi he not only went onto become the largest digital drug lord but in a twist that seems straight from tv they allege he tried to put a hit on a silk road user blackmailing him. the fbi caught him because he failed to follow his own security rules. while seeking tech help for his site he used his personal e-mail and gave his real name. >> that was kind of a flaw. it was ridiculous that you would put your real name out there but

that's what he did. >> he faces life in prison if convicted of all charges. now wjz's complete coverage of the capitol shooting continues. here is dutch ruppersberger. congressman, thank you for joining us. please tell me where you were on the capitol today and what you experienced. >> i was coming out of the capitol. i was leaving to go over to my office. i did not hear shots. 2 minutes after i left the parking lot is when the incident occurred. i came back to my office and people are saying it's a lock down, get in your office. the capitol police have trained our staff and let us know that when there are situations like this you're supposed to lock your doors, turn your lights out and listen for communication. that's exactly what occurred. we had some constituents from aberdeen

here when this occurred and they were locked down with us also. i'm sure that was a different experience for them. we were not allowed to leave our offices. as it turned out, the capitol police apprehended the person involved. a capitol police officer was injured. we take them for granite. pray for the well being of this officer who was medivaced to a hospital. >> congressman, we know there's a lot of tension on capitol hill, not just with the shut down but the recent navy yard shooting, which is just 2 miles away. are you confident that this was an isolated incident? >> clearly. i think we communicated with the capitol police and they feel that at this point it was isolated. in fact, the woman supposedly had a

child in the car. you know, because of the fact that we are in a shoutdown and there's non-stop media i think the whole country is upset and concerned as they should be. it's very frustrated. we hope that we can sway a few people to allow us to vote on a bill that will allow us to open the government and then do our business, negotiate, communicate, whatever we need to do. we need to open the government. this is simply what we're about. the united states is the best country in the world. we sure are not acting like it right now. >> i know that everything was suspended for a time. is it back to business? >> the problem i'm having in my office now is we did furlough more than half of our staff. that are doesn't mean that the work doesn't continue. we all in congress represent over 700,000 people. we are going to have to bring back our personnel who does some security.

arrest a suspect in smash and grab robberies. 54-year-old david allen is behind the crimes. he was caught. he was stopped by a police offir in deal just after one of the robberies. burglary tools and other items were found in his car according to police. we're going to talk about the weather a little bit today. fall is off to a great start in maryland as we all know. it's a good time to head out on the water, try out sailing as people did today. it is really an ideal day to eat lunch outside like this man did in annapolis along with a statute. any activity outside, a great idea today. now a live look outside. how much longer can this i want incredible weather last? meteorologist tim williams is tracking a storm in the gulf of mexico that could effect us.

i think i just answered my own question, tim. here's bob updating the pleasant conditions. >> we have clouds this afternoon. it kept temperatures down. 82 bwi, 77 ocean city, 80 elkton. we had winds coming off the ocean so only 74 in annapolis and kent island and 77 in rock hall. now, tomorrow it looks like we get back into that warm flow again. the winds coming back out of the south. we could be a couple degrees warmer than we were today. with additional humidity we might see a shower or pop up thunderstorm. today i've seen the high between 82 and 83. hasn't come in officially. the normal is only 71. the record quite a way from that, 92 way back along a time ago. tim is in the out back. he's going to check what's going on in the gulf of mexico. could bring rain. >> reporter: it certainly could. one thing we have not had is rain.

we do need it. it's going to come by way of a tropical system. we will get all the benefits without any problems. this is karen, named as of around 9:00 this morning, a tropical storm down in the mouth of the gulf. it is just around 430 miles to the south of the mouth of the mississippi river. it is moving to the north, northwest and it's at 63 miles per hour, expected to strengthen to potentially a category 1 storm. that will be sometime late in the weekend, possibly into early next week. now, all the models are in agreement that it is going to come this way. it will lose most of its punch. it will be a depression by the time it gets here. we will still have rain in tact. that could bring much needed shower activity monday into tuesday. bob will talk talk about that part of it. more from first warning weather coming up. >> thank you. from karen to christy.

it is partly cloudy, 82 degrees in central maryland. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. a shooting right outside the u.s. capitol. police and witnesses say the gunfire began when a woman in a black lexus tried to ram through a white house barricade with her car. she led police on a chase that ended outside the capitol. the woman is now dead. a young child who was with her in the

car was taken to a hospital. a police officer was injured when the car crashed outside capitol but the injuries are not life threatening. the entire capitol complex was locked down for just about an hour today. witnesses say at least 20 police cars were involved in chasing that car towards capitol hill. wjz is live in washington. we will have a full update new at 4:30. well, it is touted as the safest car in america. so why did it burst into flames? this is the scene in seattle where a $70,000 model s electric car burns. the driver managed to get out safely. tessel said a large metal object hit one of the battery packs causing this fire. after the video hit the internet wednesday shares slipped 6% because of concerns about those battery packs. speaking of stocks, not a great day on wall street.

>> [bells ringing] >> [clapping] >> the shutdown and the shooting incident at the capitol drove the markets down. the dow is down 137, the s&p down 15. let's go to new york. >> wall street is worried that the budget fight in washington could turn into something worse, failure to raise the borrowing limit. if that happens u.s. would not be able to pay its bills. stocks extended their losses after a new report showed the u.s. sector service slowed in september. that's bad for the economy since 90% of americans are employed in the service sector, which includes restaurant, construction and health care. 1,000 more people applied for unemployment

a little bit cooler today. right now 82 degrees. dew point still pleasant at 59. a humidity 45%. southwest winds just turned again. the barometer currently 30.05. 74 in ocean city, dc getting more southwest flow, they're at 85. once again tomorrow we'll start seeing more of a southwest breeze just beginning to kick in. temperatures tomorrow two or three degrees warmer than today. we may get up to 85 or even 86 degrees tomorrow. just like summer, we might see a pop up shower or thunderstorm tomorrow. see that blob down there? that's tropical storm karen. we will talk about that in a second. snow in the southern rockies. big contrast. we will suck up that gulf moisture into the southeast.

we will probably see some rain here monday, maybe into tuesday. could see moderate showers if some of that tropical moisture gets into our region. it's hard to tell if it's going to get this far north. in the meantime you can see scattered storms out to the west. even some to the north right now, a few across virginia. we stay in this warm flow. sunday that front will approach us. a quick look at karen this afternoon. it's in the gulf there approaching -- it looks like it's going to come in as a tropical storm. once it passes mississippi and florida it heads up in the mountains and will die out. it will become a low and still effect us in some way with some rain which we desperately need right now. you see the models at least. for the time being heading west of

linh bui is live with more from the scene. we begin with mary. >> reporter: the incident start started today when a woman tried to ram through a barricade at the white house with her car. she led police on a chase that ended with gunfire outside the capitol. right now authorities still aren't saying who fired the shots or if anyone was hit. the congressional complex was locked down for about an hour until police determined it was safe. >> this appears to be an isolated incident with just one vehicle involved. there's been coordination between all the agencies, including the fbi, so both scenes are under control. >> reporter: police say the driver was a woman and she was killed in that gunfire. a child inside the car was unharmed. back to you, denise. >> thank you. the scene on cal toll hill -- on capitol hill has investigators trying to figure out what happened.

wjz's coverage continues with linh bui. she's in washington. >> reporter: a quiet er er but still active scene. we're two blocks away from the action near 3rd and constitution. this is as close as we can get to the capitol building. they are directing traffic arnold. they don't want people getting theory the scene. it's calmer now, quieter now that investigators know what happened. we did talk to a man who lives right by the capitol building. he actually heard the gunshots from his basement. he rushed out to see what happened. that's when a police officer rushed him back into his house, told him to stay inside and stay safe. he had to monitor the news. the mood extremely calm compared to how it was an hour ago when we had that massive police presence after the first shots were fired. back to you. >> thank you. now wjz has the latest on the capitol hill shooting. a woman rammed her car into a white house barricade and led police on a chase that

angeles jury finds michael jackson's concert promoter was not responsible for his death. >> after a 5-month trial a los angeles jury found that aeg live was not responsible for the death of michael jackson at the hands of the doctor it hired to prepare him for concerts. meaning, it's a victory for the defense. >> ultimately that tragedy wasn't of aeg's lives making. i'm happy with the results. >> michael jackson's mother, catherine, and his three kids sued aeg live seeking up to $2 billion in damages for the singer's death. the jackson's said the promoters of the singer's 2009 come back concerts negligently hired and supervised dr. conrad murray who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. >> we are not happy. we will be exploring all option s legally. >> jurors said they carefully

was just released. the young woman said he's a hero. police in philadelphia do arrest a man who say they beat an elderly man. >> frustration and utter disgust from those who have seen this disturbing video. a 75-year-old man is robbed and beaten inside a food store at 2401 broad street. he's blind sided. >> it could have been his dad, your dad. >> the suspect now identified as 31-year-old joseph smith continues to pummel the elderly victim, kicking and punching him as he lies on the floor. the suspect ran off stealing the victim's lottery ticket and $40.

>> it's hurting. it touches your heart. >> soon after police released this video of the september 18th attack a detective recognized the suspect. smith was already in custody on another robbery that happened an hour after the attack on the elderly man. just 4 blocks away smith punched an 18-year-old woman and stole her purse. he didn't get away. a witness heard her screams, che chased smith down and held him until police arrived. >> the suspect faces robbery, theft, assault and reckless engagement charges. a chicago animal shelter looks for help after a school bus plowed into its building. 5,000 animals are saved a year there. there were two passengers on the bus, including the driver when the incident occurred. no animals or people were hurt in the crash. police are investigating the cause of the accident. a new website is revealing the last wishes of thousands of british soldiers killed in the first world war. hundreds of thousands of wills had been
