this is wjz tv, baltimore. >> from the city to the counties to your neighborhood, now it's complete coverage. it's wjz, maryland's news station. capitol hill chaos. a high-speed chase through washington, d.c. ends with a driver shot and killed by police. >> tonight the investigation into these dangerous moments caught on tape. tonight we're learning more about a shooting at the u.s. capitol. >> the woman who led police on a chase from the white house to the capitol is dead. the bizarre behavior injured two officers and it's still not

clear what was behind it all. we are live in washington with the latest from police. >> reporter: it's being called an isolated incident, but it still seems like a puzzle. a woman with a young child taking police on a high-speed chase bringing capitol hill to a standstill and proare police are still here on the scene collecting evidence. gunshots echoed across capitol hill as police tried to stop a car that struck a barricade outside the white house. mark cradick watched it all unfold. >> heard the initial what sounded like a string of fire crackers going off, maybe four or five. >> reporter: the chase started more than a mile away. a black infinity coupe hit a barricade near the white house just after 2:00 p.m. the car was driven by miriam carey of stanford, connecticut.

these pictures come from a facebook page believed to be careys. police almost had carey cornered against sidewalk barricades near the capitol building, but she backed up into a squad car and sped away. that's when the shots rang out. because of the chase and shooting, the entire capitol complex was locked down. tourers who were outside were ushered inside by capitol hill police. the chase ended when the car ran a curb. carey later died. a young child was also found in the car. >> the child is approximately a year old and in good condition and in protective custody. >> reporter: they're now searching through her home. investigators don't know why she ran into the barricade, but they say it does not appear to be an accident. >> reporter: a 23-year veteran of the capitol police and a secret service officer were

hurt during the pursuit. they are both doing well tonight. live on capitol hill, now back to you. >> thank you very much. and derek is just back from capitol hill himself where he's been talking to witnesses caught up in the panic including some lawmakers from maryland. >> reporter: certainly tense and scary moments for those folks over there. not just the folks inside the capitol, but the tourists, the visitors, and the residents who live in that area. the dramatic altercation may have been caught on camera, but many couldn't see it, they could only hear it. >> a loud bang, maybe a crash or something. >> it was like, was that a gun? >> reporter: some raced out of their homes to see what was going on. >> we were surprised it was so close to where we live. >> reporter: david was a block away from where the incident

ended. police order him and others back into their homes. >> i saw a police officer kind of hugging a small child, taking that child away from the scene. >> reporter: the incident put the entire capitol complex into lockdown mode affecting everyone inside, including members of maryland's congressional delegation. >> we are trained what to do in a lockdown. you lock the doors of your office, you turn the lights off, and you get away from the windows. >> reporter: among hundreds of lawmakers who heard the intercom warning. >> i join the majority leader in expressing our gratitude to the capitol police. >> reporter: maryland congressman led a standing ovation on the house floor crediting capitol police for their protection. >> we knew we were safe. it's not good for the country to have an event like this. for our own personal safety, we felt pretty safe. >> reporter: those lawmakers were locked down in the capitol building for about an hour and then many of them got right back to arguing about the

government shutdown. we're live, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you. we invite you to stay with wjz. for updates on the investigation and more images from the scene, go to cbsbaltimore.com. tropical storm is turning in the gulf of mexico. the gulf coast is bracing for karen, but we may feel some affects here in maryland as well. we're following the storm's ever move. >> it's about 340 miles south of the mouth of the mississippi moving off to the north, northwest at 10 miles an hour. it has sustained winds of 65 miles an hour. it won't take a whole lot to ramp up to a minimal hurricane and it may do that briefly for a while before it comes closer to shore. there's a lot of sheer which will weaken the storm by the time it gets up to virginia it will be a remnant low, but it will have some rain with it.

perhaps heavy rain here if the front to the west is a little slower. if the front is faster, the rain won't be lasting very long. all the models have it dying in the southeast. looks like this front and some of the moisture will be affecting at least our region sometime late weekend, early next week. >> thank you. an accused multi-millionaire drug lord now behind bars and a massive black market drug ring shut downment we are learning an undercover agent in maryland helped bring him down. we have details on this major bust. >> reporter: illegal drugs and services including heroin, cocaine, and guns. >> silk road was set up to be completely anonymous, hidden from law enforcement efforts. >> reporter: they shut down

silk road yesterday and he's the notorious drug lord. he did this youtube interview last year. >> i want to have a substantial positive impact on the future of humanity. >> reporter: agents arrested him in san francisco and he's charged with being the mastermind of silk road. and charged in maryland with the torture and murder of a man. $85,000 to an undercover agent after seeing staged photos of the fake torture. the investigation took two years because silk road used a cyber currency called bid coins. he allegedly designed his site outside the regular internet so his users could remain anonymous. the feds say he slipped. he used his personal e-mail and gave his real name. >> that was his fatal flaw. it was ridiculous you would put your real name out there, but that's what he did.

>> reporter: he now faces life in prison. not the future he had in mind. >> you gonna live forever? >> i think it's a possibility. >> he's due back in san francisco federal court tomorrow morning to discuss bail and his transfer to new york where the bulk of the charges have been filed. man who accidentally ran over his grandson at a 4th of july parade in annapolis will not face charges. he died after accidentally being run over. he was riding on a trailer when he fell and was hit. there was no way his grandfather could have known what happened. a three-alarm fire breaks out in the northeast shopping plaza center. it took two and a half hours to get the fire under control. investigators are trying to figure out how it started. president barack obama

cancels a planned trip to aisa. hundreds of thousands of workers will spend a fourth day home without pay. >> reporter: both democrats and republicans appear to be holding their ground and that means there is no end in sight for the shutdown. federal offices shut down, parks closed, workers at home, and the government shutdown doesn't appear to be ending any time soon. the president blamed the house speaker for refusing to allow a vote on a short-term spending bill. >> speaker john boehner won't even let the bill get a yes or no vote because he doesn't want to anger the extremists in his party. >> reporter: house republicans are trying to pass bills to find agencies one at a time. they won't reopen the government on a peace meal basis. >> no negotiations, no talking, my way or the highway, and we are here. >> reporter: so the stalemate

continues. hoyer is sponsoring legislation that would give furloughed workers the paychecks they're now missing out on. >> thank you. while hundreds of thousands are struggling financially in the shut down, for some it's a matter of life and death. they can't begin any new clinical trials. we spoke to a little girl who's counting on one of those trials to survive. >> reporter: 8-year-old maddie doesn't look sick at all, but this week her leukemia came back for the fourth time. her mother has reason to. the clinical trial she now needs cannot be approved by the fda because the fda has been shut down with the rest of the federal government. >> i am completely blown away by how callus and carelessly they've kind of used us as

their pawns to push their own agenda. >> reporter: she says maddie's cancer is curable in 90% of the cases. her daughter is in that 10% category. 6 months ago she went through a clinical trial that worked. because of her relapse, she's scheduled to have it again. now it's in the air. >> for her, this is truly life or death. this isn't a game. this isn't pushing one ideology over another. this is my babe's life. >> reporter: sick people hoping to join clinical trials are being turned away because three quarters of the employees are being furloughed. those already enrolled in clinical trials will still receive care. >> while they act like children, they should take a cue from my child and act like her because she is 8, but she's showing maturity way beyond any of them. >> love. i only answer to love. >> reporter: about 200 new

with patients suffering from the venomous stings. 41 people have died and another 1600 are being treated. in order to prevent more attacks, fire departments have destroyed hundreds of hives around the province. well, a horrible loss of life off an italian island. a ship wreck kills at least 114 migrants from africa. the italian coast guard rescued more than 150 people, but at least 200 others are missing. a fire started on a fishing boat causing a panic. those on board rushed to one side causing the vessel to capsize. it's believed the boat set sail from libya. seven of the eight people killed in a fiery bus crash in tennessee have been identified. the group was returning from a gospel festival. their bus popped a tire. the drivers of those two vehicles also died.

14 people were injured. two are in critical condition. the ntsb will not send investigators to the crash site. most of them have been furloughed. safety concerns and investor concerns are plaguing the electric car maker tesla. it stems from this fiery crash in seattle. a large metal object damaged the battery cell and caused that fire. it points out the need to strengthen the shield over the battery. a warning to marylanders. flu season has arrived. the first case of h1n1 has been reported in our state. what are doctors expecting this season? >> reporter: last year the flu outbreak was declared an epidemic here in maryland.

the first flu case of the year is now reported in maryland. health officials say a child living in the d.c. suburbs was briefly hospitalized with the h1n1 virus. it's the same strain of flu that killed this woman's son in 2009. >> i would never imagine something as simple as the flu would have taken my son away from me. >> reporter: 5600 laboratory confirmed cases and more than 3000 patients hospitalized. last year the emergency room was over run with flu cases. >> the amount of people we saw that had the flu, we weren't screening for the flu. >> reporter: he hopes the unseasonably warm weather helps keep people out of the e.r . this year. >> with the weather change and hopefully getting the vaccine

human next to that tail. we have another warm period of weather headed our way and maybe rain by next week. 71 now, a very warm night. the barometer has gone up a little bit and the humidity has come up too. the dew point is 64. humidity 78%. 68 in cumberland. 72 in d.c. tonight we'll get down in the low to mid-60s. downtown probably staying right around upper 60s, low 70s. currently upper 60s low 70s. with the dew point in the low 60s, it can't drop that much. right now winds are just a dead calm everywhere.

a lot of weather across the united states. first we had karen in the gulf. some snow, much of wyoming, idaho getting moderate to heavy snow. ahead of it the flow is bringing in some warm air. that's all going to head across the great lakes but it will trail a cold front that will move across the ohio valley sometime sunday and sunday night and monday it will be approaching our region with some showers. the same time, karen and some of that tropical moisture may be feeding into the southeast. it's possible we could see moderate rain in that area. monday as that system from the south joins the system coming from the west, it all depends on the timing. we certainly need the rain. it looks like it will be a 10- 12 hour period. we could see moderate rain in there. that would be monday ending tuesday. for the weekend, it stays warm

and the front comes in. things begin to cool off. quick look once again. it will come ashore sometime by late saturday night, sunday then weaken into a remnant low by the time it gets up to virginia. it does have some pretty good rain with it, particularly along the coast. the bay temperature around 70. tonight, look for partly cloudy skies. 59 degrees. the next five days 84 tomorrow, 86, 85. rain monday likely. still above average. coming up, many questions for the ravens heading into their next game. >> joe flacco has answers. we'll hear what he has to say coming ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
