had fallen and hit her head last year and after wards her behavior change. relatives and friends suggest she was battling depression. danielle nottingham, wjz eyewitness news. >> a secret service member and a capitol police officer were injured during the chase. they are both expected to be okay. we are now four days into the government shutdown. neither side is showing any sign of giving in. there is some good news for furloughed federal workers. vic is in the room with the latest. >> reporter: today the obama administration gave way to vote for the bill to pay 800,000 workers for the time they missed. republicans and democrats are still refusing to budge on the big issues. the president is demanding to reopen the government with no strings attached. the republicans say they will call a vote.

>> president obama has canceled a planned trip to asia over the weekend to stay here and focus on the shutdown. police are investigating a deadly accident in anderson county. sky eye chopper 13 was over the seen. an suv and sedan collided just before 1:00. a 73-year-old woman was killed. police say it does not appear to believe drugs or alcohol was a factor. a bus over turns on the way to school. half a dozen people are injured, five of them students at pikesville middle school. mike schuh has the latest. >> this is a single vehicle accident. something happened within the course of about three football fields that the bus ended up fish trailing, traveling backwards as it hit a bridge and flew into a small creek. >> when you look at a school bus facing the wrong way on its

side in a stream you fear the worse. >> not the way we want to start any school day. it appears we have been lucky. >> we had 11 patients with no significant injuries. >> this is what it looks like inside. ten pikesville middle schoolers were thrown about. the main door points skyward. they scramble out the back and through this roof hatch. >> they determine that all the occupants of the bus self-evacuated. >> five are rushed to the hospital, a couple of them went to school. this is narrow lane cutting downhill through estates and farms. it is a moist, dewy morning. >> police were paying a lot of attention to the markings on the grass and roadway. there's a lip on this road. it appears that all of the wheels on the right side of the bus dropped

off this lip and then the skid begins here and ends at the accident scene. >> this bus is four years ago years old. the driver will be drug and alcohol tested. those on the scene breathed a sigh of relief. >> as a parent and baltimore county public school employee was fright. i can't imagine the fear of the parents when the parents came to pick up their kids from the accident. >> reporting from brooklynville, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. back to you. >> thank you. two children were taken to the hospital but they have now been released. the bus has cameras on board which should help with the investigation. baltimore city police are cracking down on drivers using cell phones behind the wheel. a new law went into effect earlier this week allowing police to pull you over just for talking on the phone. today the baltimore police department is setting up check points to make sure drivers are complying. it is a $75 fee for the first

offense and that increases with each ticket. tropical storm karen is fast approaching the u.s. it will be the first named storm to make land fall during the atlantic hurricane season. as marly hall reports for wjz, the government shutdown could prevent help from getting to the hardest hit areas. >> the surf is whipping up along the northern gulf coast, the first sign of what's on the way. karen is moving fast and is expected to make land fall saturday. >> forecasters predict karen could bring as much as 10 inches of rain to some areas. >> it's going to be a big rain event. there will be flooding. >> the wind is pick ing up in pensacola beach but the sky is mostly clear. a hurricane watch is in effect. >> some emergency officials have expressed concern they could face problems getting help to stricken areas because of the partial government shutdown.

hundreds of thousands of federal workers are on furlough. the white house said some of those employed have been called back to help prepare for karen. local fire departments are getting ready. >> some people don't heed the warning. they will stay, decide to stay. >> the governors of louisiana, mississippi and florida have all declared states of emergency in advance of the storm. >> marly hall, wjz eyewitness news. >> the big question is could we feel some of the effects of karen here in maryland? wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. bob turk is tracking the storm's path. >> the storm this afternoon has weakened. yesterday the winds were up to 65. now they're down to 50 miles per hour. the pressure has risen. it's about 230 miles south of the mouth of the mississippi moving off to the north, northwest at about 9 miles per hour. it looks like it's going to make land fall

somewhere east of mobile, alabama. it's going to weaken before quickly into a remnant low there over portions maybe east of atlanta, athens, georgia. some of the tropical moisture will probably work its way north ward. we do expect so see some rain. however, there's that cold front to the west. we still do expect to see decent rain here on monday. most of the tracks have the main entity, actually what's left of it, going west of us now. we do expect to see rain here on monday and we need it. speaking of temperatures, which we weren't, a warm day this afternoon. we got up to 87 degrees believe it or not. the normal is only 71. the record 92 degrees. looks like more heat this weekend and then the much needed rain coming here on monday. >> thank you. now over to christy breslin at wjz traffic control for our first look at the roads today.

it is partly sunny, 84 degrees in central maryland. new details about a tragic ship wreck in italy. officials say survivors clung to empty water bottles to keep themselves from drowning. there are also reports that fishing boats and other vessels near the wreck ignored calls for help. the fiery ship wreck killed more than 100 african migrants, raising further questions about the european union's immigration policy. in california a two alarm fire forces an interstate in stockton to shut down.

ocean city and 86 in easton. it's a hot day in october. 82 annapolis and kent island, rock hall. considering how pleasant it's been with temperatures generally in the upper 60s and 70s this is extremely unusual for october. we have a light northwest breeze bringing in that warm air that's all over the east coast. it's dominating our weather picture. there's not much in the way of precip. this cold front to the west is going to change our weather. shower activity along it. the track from karen kind of ending up somewhere southeast of atlanta by monday. it's going to be a long way off but some of that moisture may stream up towards our region. the front kind of squeezes this rain together. we do expect to see rain here monday and maybe lingering into tuesday and

driver appears in court today. >> law enforcement officials tell cbs news that reginald chance is the biker who used his helmet to smash the window of an suv. >> it began when a mob of motorcycles swarmed the suv sunday. the driver took off and ran over a biker. >> his family has hired gloria alred to pursue justice. >> the suv comes and hits him while his back is turned. >> he remains here at saint luke's roosevelt hospital. both legs are broken. his family said he may be paralyzed for life. >> it tears me up that anyone could think that he deserves what happened to him. >> police say he was operating the motorcycle without a license and hasn't had one since 1999. it's believed he was part of a stunt ride with more than 1,000

several trailers were thrown around. at least one home was completely destroyed. two others were badly damaged. power lines and trees were knocked down in the area. preparations are underway for tropical storm karen. crews are laying tarps on the pensacola beach in florida. the mayor is asking residents to do the same. bob is in the first warning weather center. he's tracking karen's path for us. bob. >> that that area they -- in that area they could see a one, two, three up to five foot storm surge. it's not particularly strong. take a look at the satellite track of it. it's about 230 miles south of the mouth of the mississippi river. it's expected to come on shore just around the mobile, alabama area. probably around near pensacola also. that weakens into a remnant low over eastern georgia by monday.

swarms of hornets are responsible for several deadly attacks in china. hornet stings killed 42 people and left more than 1,600 others injured. 37 people are in critical condition from those stings. crews are spraying and setting fire to nests trying to destroy them. dry weather may be to blame. the conditions make it easier for hornets to breed. police in florida say a man ransacked his boss's $35 million mansion. mary is in the news room with more information. >> reporter: denise, the boss's wife who was alone inside the home dialled 911 after she was robbed at gunpoint. >> there's somebody inside your house right now? >> i don't know. they took the car. >> they just took your car? >> about 5 minutes ago. i'm tied up with my feet . >> reporter: the male suspect worked for the homeowners medical billing company.

his wife was involved in the robbery. she drove the husband to the estate. the couple is accused of stealing $4,000 in cash, $400,000 worth of jewelry and a ashton martin car. police found the car after it was abandoned in miami. denise, back to you. >> thank you. police did not recover the skrul jewelry. a traffic stop turns dead ly in oregon. a man gets out of his car and begins firing at officers. >> [beep] >> police say they pulled over the 34-year-old for speeding and he shot at a state trooper. he was hit before he pled fled the scene. he was found dead a half a mile down the road. he was on a road trip with three children. the children were not harmed. the state trooper was not seriously injured. a california high school student is punished for wearing a t-shirt from the national

all right. very, very warm october day. we got up to 87 degrees this afternoon. the record 92, just 5 degrees short of that. temperatures still very warm at 84 at last report. northwest winds at 5. humidity at 47%. the dew point came up from yesterday a couple of degrees to 62, which makes 84 feel like the real feel of 85 degrees. it's a little hotter today than yesterday. the winds out of the northwest believe it or not normally would bring us cooler air but there's a lot of warm air west of us. 30.01 the barometer holding steady. 86 cumberland, 77 ocean city, 75 oakland. 89 in dc. i'm sure they probably got to 90 in the last few hours. very hot afternoon. some areas probably got close to records. i'm sure we will see some of those. 82 annapolis, kent island and rock hall, bel air close to the water

and westminster also at 82 degrees. northwest winds haven't been all that strong today. we did get a slight breeze out of this system. west of us is a significant cold front. it's a very slow mover. some scattered storm activity an ohio, very widely scattered showers along the front. along the gulf coast not a whole lot of rain showing up yet even though the storm track will take karen, what's left of it, over eastern georgia by sometime monday. now, after that what's left of the storm would just be an area of rain that will spread out. could reach us maybe as the front approaches from the west sometime on monday. we expect to see some rain from it. out to the west, that's where the action is. a winter storm with heavy snow in wyoming, colorado, some areas may pick up two feet. this thing is a real winter storm. you can see that thing springing around. karen really disorganized. no increase in
