hi, everybody. i'm mary bubala. kai is off today. here's what people are talking about. strong storms sweep through maryland prompting tornado watches for most of the day. a live look outside right now. still pret -- is pretty dreary. we start the bob turk. >> let's take a look at delaware on the eastern shore. that's where the rain is going on. still is moderate to heavy shower activity along the lower eastern shore and maryland/delaware border. really just some moderate to heavy shower activity. it's moving off to the east and northeast rather quickly. it will eventually get to ocean city and the shore in the next 45 minutes. west of the bay it's all cleared out. maybe a sprinkle in the next hour or two. there's been sunshine just

captured al-qaeda leader today. wendy gillette has the latest for wjz. >> al-liby is being questioned for his alleged role in the 1998 bombing of american embassies in africa. more than 220 people died in the blast. he was on the most-wanted list and there was a $5 million bounty for his arrest. >> officials in libya called it an abduction. traveling over seas secretary of state john kerry defundamentaled fend defended the operation. >> the united states is going to do everything that's legal and property to enforce security. >> al-liby is expected to be transferred to new york to put on trial. during a separate raid on saturday they stormed a

compound trying to capture the master mind in the massacre in the kenya mall last month. they say the suspect was not killed or captured. the seals got into a fire fight and had to with draw. in new york, wendy gillette, wjz eyewitness news. >> al-liby's family members said he had been living openly in libya for several years and did not have ties to terror groups the government shutdown is now in its second week. there are positive developments at the naval academy today. denise is in the news room with more. >> reporter: all civilian faculty returned to campus. they had to cancel 20% of its classes over the weekend due to furloughs. the pentagon announced it would order civil employees back to work. 950 faculty and staff worked at the campus. hundreds of thousands of federal employees are forever

still out of work today due to the shutdown. at this point republicans and democrats are not negotiating. congress is running out of time to reach a deal to raise the debt ceiling. other wise the u.s. could default on its debt for the first time in u.s. history. a maryland state trooper remains in critical condition after she was hit on the side of the road. trooper jacqueline kline helped another trooper pull over a suspected drunk driver on route 100. he was hit by a car driven by 21 enrique guzman. charges with spending against guzman. police say alcohol was not a factor. a horrible wreck at an indycar race in texas sends debris flying into the grand stand. a popular driver rushed to the hospital and more than a dozen fans injured.

whose name has not been released, took to light rail to the airport, made it past the screeners and boarded a plane. >> i could not figure out how this young man was able to do this. >> here's what officials say happened, he scouted the airport on wednesday, taking a bag off the carousel and sitting down to eat at a rest restaurant. he told the waitress he had to use the restroom and left the luggage and the bill. >> the next day he said he was going to vegas and did it. >> he made it through airport security and got on a delta flight to vegas. >> it wasn't the fact that he could have had a weapon on him. he was screened. the real question is how do you board an airport without the appropriate identification and validation. >> it doesn't until mid flight

people were forced to evacuate their homes after a tie boom ripped through china. it caused major power outages. at least two deaths are reported. a mechanical failure causing a crane to dangle from a residential building in new york city today. a tower crane hoisting a 13,000 pound load got stuck 44 stories up in the air. this is the same building where a crane snapped and dangled during super storm sandy last year. now residents are allowed back into their homes. no injuries reported from that. in today's wjz health watch the american heart association wants doctors to start tackling tough conversations with patients about their unhealthy lifestyles.

all right. this is what sky eye chopper 13 is showing us. wow. >> thank you. >> the sun. >> we can see a little bit of sunshine. there's some from hagerstown out into western maryland, mary. we're still dealing with a lot of clouds in central maryland. take a look at first warning doppler weather radar. we still do have some rainfall located over on the eastern shore. that's going to be pushing out of there by about 6:00, 7:00. we'll only be left with a few places of spotty

drizzle. light to moderate rainfall down there south cambridge. nothing going on in ocean city. we will be dealing with a couple more hours of rainfall. 60 degrees right now at bwi. the high today was 75 degrees. that was what the thermometer hit just before the rain started pouring at the airport. 61 degrees in dc, 65 in hagerstown. everybody across the board has really cooled off. ocean city eventually once they get that rainfall will be cooling off too. dew points at 56 degrees. locally we're seeing temperatures anywhere from the upper 50s to low 60s. 68 in rock hall, 67 kent island. those numbers will be dropping in the next one to two hours. winds have made their shift out of the west and north all behind that cool front that pushed through. it was that that brought us that potent rainfall today. it sparked a few watches

shot and killed after a chase from the white house reacts to reports about her mental state. mary is in the news room with more. >> reporter: mariam kerry's centers sisters said people are confused. kerry was shot to death after dc officials said she tried to ram her car through a white house barricade. one of the sisters said she was struggling with postpartum depression. they said the shooting was unjustified and they believe law enforcement could have handled things differently. >> thank you. an investigation is underway toe if the police force was justified. well, a stormy day has turned into a calm start to the evening. a live look outside. we still haven't seen the sun today. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist chelsea ingram and bob turk have the latest on today's threat of severe weather. let's go first to bob. >> the severe weather is over

for our region. still a chance for some stronger thunderstorms. perhaps on the low eastern shore of delaware. all the activity has moved well east of the area. we still have some pretty good rain going on on the low eastern shore not far from salisbury, cambridge, around elliot. west of the bay it's all quiet. we've got some lingering clouds, a sprinkle or two in the next hour or two. brightening later on tonight. until 5:00 we have officially a tornado watch for central and southern delaware. that will be canceled very, very shortly. as temperatures go, down to 60. 55 in oakland, 75 still in ocean city. you will get your rain shortly and it will probably be finished there around 7:00 tonight. things will eventually clear out for you as well. we've got cooler weather and sunshine on tap for tomorrow. chelsea as a look ahead. >> reporter: that's right. it's actually going to be somewhat of a normal and

search teams took advantage of a break in bad weather to retrieve 17 bodies from the wreck submerged in 130 feet of water. that brings the death toll to 300. the area is a popular entry point for migrants from africa into southern europe. thousands have died attempting that crossing. a fourth motorcyclist is in police custody in the chase and beating of an suv driver. the person who smashed the window is being held on bail. >> police say the person seen pulling the range rover's door open is this man, 35-year-old robert simms of brooklyn. they say the man who later slammed his helmet against the driver's side window is reginald chance, 37, also from brooklyn. chance's lawyers said his client over reacted and broke the window but denied taking part in the beating. >> if you look at the video you

it, guys, let it go. let it go. >> at least three off -duty new york city police officers now admit to being in last week's motorcycle rally. one a detective that worked undercover, even saw the attack. apparently fearful of revealing his identity did not intervene. >> now, the motorcyclist who took the video is cooperating with police and is not considered a suspect. firefighters gained some ground on a wild fire at camp pendleton in southern california. so far it's burned nearly 4 square miles of brush. a few hundred residents are being allowed to return to their houses under near lake oneal. the fire is 40% contained. so far no injuries have been reported from this wild fire. extensive damage in nebraska after twisters tear through the town of wayne. the governor could not believe what he saw. an airport was completely

destroyed. the incredible winds tossed airplanes around like toys. power lines are down. people are beginning to pick up the pieces however. no one was killed in the storm. well, let's check on the roads right now on the rainy monday with christy breslin at wjz traffic control. hi, christy. >> hi, everybody. you said it, the rain is making this commute a difficult one. a couple of accidents up in the harford county region. watch for them 924 at emerton road, the two right turn lanes are blocked off. also southbound 24 at mcfail and rock spring at route 24. southbound falls road at the beltway, 32 eastbound at washington boulevard. that one involving an overturned vehicle. we're looking at heavy traffic on the topside of the inner loop from the jfx over to harford road. along 95 in the northbound direction approaching 32 over to 895 then it will slow

car explosion in brazil. they pushed a car into a fire at a south palo roadblock causing the vehicle to explode in a ball of fire. the blast sent debris hundreds of a feet into the air. people were protesting against rent prices. the incident follows a summer of rise in brazil of poor health care, underfunded schools and public transportation prices. new surveillance video shows two men believed to be behind the kenya mall attack. they were caught on tape entering a bank to make a car payment. the kenyan government said that car was used in the assault. that assault killed at least 67 people. it's still unclear how many suspects were involved in the attack. kenya maintains that as many as 15 militants took part and five were killed. nine are in custody. investigators release new details about the cause of a monster truck crash in mexico that killed eight people. mary has more on this. mary. >> reporter: state officials

say the driver performed an unauthorized maneuver that led him to run over spectators. police say the driver followed protocol, crushing cars during the ride. then he unexpectedly turned around and jumped the cars again in the opposite direction. the driver reportedly hit his head and lost consciousness during the stunt causing him to barrel through the crowd. authorities say the driver had a few sips of beer before the event. back to you. >> thank you, mary. motor sports experts believe organizers are to blame. they say spectators should not have been allowed in the pit area where the accident took place. james holmes, the man charged in the colorado movie theater shooting is set to return to court today. his attorneys are trying to prevent prosecutors from sharing evidence from two dating websites holmes joined by the massacre. prosecutors said he wrote a quote, will you visit me

in prison, end quote showing he knew it was wrong. he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to killing a dozen people and injuring 70 others. a zoo worker is recovering after being mauled to death by a tiger. she put her hand inside the cage and got her jacket stuck in the wire. the tiger bit her arm off. doctors were able to save her arm but they say she has a long road to recovery. a three alarm fire breaks out at a colorado apartment complex displacing two dozen people. the fire started on the third floor of one of the apartment buildings. residents were evacuated while crews battled the flames. working smoke detectors helped all families get out without any injuries. the cause is still under investigation. a man is being hailed a hero

from saving a woman from a fiery accident in california. melanie woodrow has the story. >> bob, amy and soe michaels couldn't wait to visit family in california. there's some adventures that can't be planned. talked the whole trip. >> they were drive ing ing behind this big rig carrying paper towels. it veered off the highway down this embankment and set cars on fire. >> i knew i had to stop and do something. >> bob jumped the guardrail and fence and rescued the truck's female driver. >> i saw him leaning in the driver's side trying to get her to come out. as he was doing that i could see the flames starting to come up in the back of the cab. that's when i kind of freaked out and started screaming. >> amy shot this video on her cell phone and in this video posted on you tube you can see the bright red flames and thick black smoke. >> it's crazy.

well, cloudy skies in the baltimore region. maybe a couple sprinkles. all the rain moved off to the east. the low eastern shore and delaware and jersey getting quite a bit of rain. take a look at temperatures. it's cooled down. 61 now. dew point 57 . that aught to be coming down much lower tonight and tomorrow. humidity still at 86%. the winds just turned around at the west at 3 miles per hour. the barometer will be rising to 29.91. 57 oakland, 65 hagerstown. they got brightening in the sky there. 63 in cumberland. still warm in ocean city. it will be raining there very shortly and probably will continue until about 7:30,

8:00. 68 easton, 72 that's the warm spot. temperatures ranging from the 50s to low to mid 60s. warmer down in annapolis and kent island. west winds here up to 12 to 16. we have stronger breezes that will dry things out quickly. the temperatures will drop. the dew point is going to get back into the 30s. in oakland the is 39 degrees. all the shower activity from fil philadelphia down through delaware, the low eastern shore. that's moving off rather quickly. just started the rain in ocean city. just ending in cambridge and easton. a couple sprinkles in harford county. from the city on west brightening in the sky. we will see some clearing tonight and much, much cooler temperatures on tap. here's that front. all the way from on tar tario down into georgia. this moisture here is what's left of karen never got involved in our front. it did cause some pretty good shower

activity over central and southern florida. you can see those squall lines on that front up in new york. gusty winds. now all the rain is off to the east, clearing sky to the west. that will be us over the next several days. however, this front is going to stall out a little bit. perhaps low pressure could develop off the carolina coast. if it does happen it could bring us more rain late wednesday, could continue thursday, friday and maybe into saturday. it could. we'll have to look at it . tonight clearing skies. down around 50 tonight. tomorrow lots of sunshine, a few passing clouds. much drier with a high around 65 to 70 degrees. exactly where it should be. >> fall-like weather. we're ready. thank you, bob . still to come on witness news. >> house republicans call for negotiations while the president calls for a vote on a spending
