. debt ceiling. congress can't agree on ending the government shutdown. and there's a bigger problem looming. the ongoing feud in washington and how it's impacting families of fallen soldiers. hello, everyone. >> here's what people are talking about tonight. >> the federal budget standoff is in its eighth day but there's a bigger fight to come over raising the debt ceiling. if congress missing this deadline the impact on americans could be worse. we're in washington where tensions are high. >> reporter: president obama and

house speaker john boehner appeared before the media on tuesday. >> we shouldn't have to fight this hard to keep our government hope. >> what the president said today was if there's unconditional surrender by republicans he'll sit down and talk to us. >> reporter: neither offered much progress. they want to pass a spending bill and a debt limit increase without amendments. >> we may have our differences democrats and republicans but we should not hold the full faith and credit of this great country hostage while we solve them. >> reporter: republicans want concessions on the health care law and negotiations on the debt ceiling. >> we need to stop living beyond our means. >> reporter: the government shutdown means family of fallen soldiers are being denied death

benefits, including $100,000 in compensation. >> i'm embarrassed. all of us should be. >> reporter: defense secretary has been asked to restore the benefits. . there's a new development at the federal reserve. president obama will nominate vice chair janet yellen to succeed bernanke. this would begin in january. a water main break shoots gallons of water into the air in baltimore county. this is the scene late this afternoon at putty hill avenue and perreaulttt park way. it did not impact customers in the area but it should down the road through rush hour. sex trafficking arrests in howard county. three people are accused of kidnapping young women and forcing them to become sex

slaves. experts say it's an emerging problem here in maryland. we have the details of this latest cases. >> reporter: the arrests were made in two separate cases in howard county that were reported just a day apart. okeido anderson is behind bars after a complaint. the woman who been beaten went to a carroll county fire station for help just the day before another woman called howard county police with a similar story. she claimed 29-year-old maddox and amina phillip forced her to have sex for money in various states over three days. the couple was arrested in elkridge. in both cases they were advertizing on backpage.com to try to solicit customers.

>> it is a coincidence that in each of these individual and separate situation that is website was used in both cases. >> reporter: victim's advocates say sex trafficking is a growing problem here in maryland. last year the governor held a conference on it to train local agencies to prosecute the cases. sex trafficking has been reported in nearly every maryland county. and in howard county officers are trained. one officer is assigned solely to sex trafficking. >> police say when they arrested anderson they found an assault weapon in his car. all three are being held in the detention center. miss say four cars were

involved in a crash and the officers were in a patrol car. they suffered nonlife threatening injuries. no word on what caused that crash. maryland state police make an arrest in the hit and run crash that leaves a carroll county teen fighting for his life. tania brown from west virginia faces numerous charges. she is accused of hitting michael hatfield in an intersection last month. hatfield is in a medically induced coma. police say a woman was texting while driving. she crashed into a motorcyclist on route 3 in gambrills. derek valcourt has more on the understand precedented charges against her. >> reporter: 30-year-old jonathan wesley roberts was a father and son who loved riding

his motorcycle. he was riding here in gambrills when then 19-year-old elizabeth halley myers drove her car into his path. roberts died in the resulting accident. the anne arundel county state's attorney says they can prove myers was texting while driving. >> we have an eyewitness who was walking in the area. he saw her driving with one hand on the wheel and the other hand looking down and texting. we also have cell phone records that confirm she was texting at the time. >> reporter: myers faces several charges including negligent man schauter. she's getting little sympathy. >> she deserves it. she killed a guy. >> texting. come on your hands and your mind and eyesight is being used at the same time. you can't drive a vehicle doing that. >> reporter: the distracted driving law is in effect making it illegal to tax while driving

and to talk on a handheld phone as well. criminal charges against myers should serve as a warning. >> this is a big wake-up call to everyone to knock it off. put the phone down and drive your car. >> reporter: if she is convicted, elizabeth myers faces a possibility that she could spend up to 10 years in prison and pay thousands in fines. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> we could not reach elizabeth myers for comment on the story. city shoppers have a new destination. the canton crossing shopping center is now open. stores including dsw shoe warehouse, old navy, 35 below, target. there's a red robin restaurant as well. tonight pressure is growing to change the name of the washington redskins. a native american tribe is in washington, d.c. this week fighting against the name it

calls racist but devoted fans say it represents 8 decades of redskins tradition. we have the developing controversy. >> reporter: baltimore leader, a native american leader in the city, believes this effort is a good start but he doubts the team will change its name. the washington redskins have a rich and storied history with three super bowl championships. >> it is a racial epithet. >> reporter: the team may be overshadowed by growing calls to change the name. many consider the name and mascot on the helmet offensive to the native americans. members of the oneida nation met in washington to talk about it. >> history is littered with people who said they were never going to change. >> reporter: nfl commissioner grew up as a fan of the team and never considered the name offensive. >> whenever you have a situation

they threw molotov cocktails which set police vehicles on fire. the militants say the proposal falls well short of their demands. a historic church in los angeles is gutted by a fire. the roof of the church collapsed. they say the pastor told them he turned on the gas heater and noticed smoke coming from the vent. it took 90 minutes to put out the names. it was built in 1895. a new york city undercover officer is arrested in the motorcycle road rage attack. investigators say new video evidence shows the detective punching the back window of the surrounded suv. he will face riot and mischief charges. the driver of the suv was beaten and needed stitches. a motorcycle rider was also run over in the incident and may be

paralyzed. the father of the 9-year-old who slipped through security and boarded a mane is speaking about his son's situation. the boy was screened without a ticket and ended up on a night to las vegas. the child's father says he wants to know how the airline let this happen. >> how can you let manuel slip past security, getting on the plane, without anyone stopping or questioning him or anything. >> the father said they thought the child was at a friend's house. he also admitted his son has behavioral problems and they have been seeking help. the boy is too young to be charged with a crime. oscar winning actor tom hanks made a surprise announcement on the hate show with dave hetterman. he has -- late show with dave letterman. >> you look wonderful.

as strong as a tornado. cold air coming aloft, interacts with a lot of warm air rising, gets them to spin to make it happen. we have cool damp conditions coming our way. not much after breeze yet. humidity 64%. the barometer is rising. 46 in oakland. clear skies out here. 64 ocean city and 61 in dc. right now locally mid-50s, low 50s already. as you get away from the city up towards pennsylvania, toward hanover, the skies are not nearly as cloudy as in the city. that may play in some of the forecast for the next several days, particularly frederick, who probably won't see nearly the rain as the eastern shores.
