[cheering] [applause] >> ellen: have a seat, have a seat. that's an enormous amount of energy, and i give it all right back to you. thank you so much, everybody. how fun was it to wake up and make -- it felt like fall this morning, didn't it? it was chilly here in l.a. it was drizzling for a little while. it's 90 degrees now, but for a little while it was cool. it was nice. when it's cold in the morning, it's not easy to get out of bed and work out.

it's hard to stay motivated. there are new ways to get you to start working out. you have fitness bracelets? anybody have these nike fuel brand bracelets? you're wearing one right now. yeah. they count your steps and then they share how many exercise you're doing on facebook. [laughter] >> ellen: that's a fun facebook page, isn't it? not only do you know that they went to the dentist but you know how many steps it took for them to get there. that's a good friend. i tried one out for a week but i could never hit my daily steps goal because -- mainly, because my assistant carries me around the office. [laughter] >> ellen: it's working out for him because he has prize winning -- they have these scales now that they try to motivate you by posting your weight on facebook. why would anyone do that? i don't care how fit you are, ain't nobody got time for that.

[laughter] >> ellen: you know? [applause] >> ellen: i have 10 million facebook fans but why on earth would i want 10 million people to know that i weigh 104 pounds. [laughter] >> ellen: some people don't need to lose any weight. they have other problems that they need to be motivated for. here is something here. it's a mobile breathalyzer. have you heard of these mobile breathalyzer things? you blow into it and it tells you your blood alcohol level, and i guess there are other breathalizers that do that but this one shares the results on facebook. [laughter] >> ellen: it's supposed to give you some insights into your drinking habits. here is an insight. if you own a breathalyzer, you're drinking too much. [laughter] >> ellen: sign number one. they need to get these companies

together. what they should make is a breathalyzer that tells you how many calories you just ate and how far you have to run to work off that bahama mama. right now i hope i'm all the motivation you need to dance. ♪ ♪ [cheering] [applause]

[cheering] >> ellen: pumpkin m&m's. really? i don't know. i'm skeptical. then look at -- the m&m doesn't even seem happy about it. i don't know. not sure. but you say you like that?

bowden college in maine. thank you very much. a doctor of humanities is what it is. >> ellen: good for you. >> bowden college, i used to have a house outside of there and shepherd is a graduate from there. >> ellen: that's really cool. i think you went back approximate got your high school diploma the week before you got your doctorate, right? >> i graduated high school friday and got the doctorate on saturday. >> ellen: that's crazy. not many people can say that. >> it was a remarkable weekend. i was very busy. i was studying a lot. >> ellen: was it hard to go back and get your g.e.d.? >> they found out i was getting a doctorate. i dropped out of high school in my senior year to run away with the circus, basically. >> ellen: you really did. >> i really did. >> ellen: you went -- >> no, it's true, i never got my high school diploma. st. dom's which was the school i went to in maine figured i got my doctorate, shiprobably have

my high school diploma so i got my high school diploma from st. doma's and my doctorate the next day. >> ellen: amazing. >> thank goodness for the circus. >> ellen: how are the kids and how old are they? >> the boys are six and my daughter is 11. >> ellen: wow. >> it's going by really fast. >> ellen: it seems like i ask you that and they jump years like dog years every time you're here, they're somehow much older than they should be. >> they keep getting bigger and bigger, i can't get over how quick they're growing. if i'm gone for two days they stretch out. they love cycling, which is great. >> ellen: that's great that they're very outdoorsy. you had a farm and you sold that. did you move the animals here? >> we have a farm here. >> ellen: they used to be in maine. >> they're always here. >> ellen: how many and what do you have? >> we have four mini-donkeys. a lot of these are rescues. a tortoise that was a rescue. those are the donkeys. easton and weston, a pig named

hank. there he is. he doesn't do much. but he's well fed, you can see. >> ellen: they're smart. >> incredibly smart. they're like dogs. >> ellen: they're smarter than dogs, i've heard. >> they follow you around. they know when they're getting food. >> ellen: you have chickens. you have a cool looking chicken. >> that's q-tip. [laughter] >> ellen: my daughter named him that. they're wild. that's a rooster. amazing. >> nice shot. hair care. >> ellen: who is taking those pictures? >> probably not me. >> ellen: now there is another picture that i want to ask you about. is this a regular thing that you do? you crash weddings whenever you see a wedding, you will just walk up? >> if i'm there, i go in. it's fun. and i go up to the bride. [laughter] >> ellen: where was this? >> this was deer valley at christmas time. it was, like, new year's eve, i

think it was, and this couple was getting married. the groom wasn't too happy i showed up. [laughter] >> but we had fun. it was good. >> ellen: you wander up. >> i go like, "hi, can am come in?" crash the party. "champagne? where is the cake?" here is my camera. >> ellen: i have walked in and danced with the groom and then just left and they're like what happened? [laughter] >> ellen: you crashed a motorcycle which should teach you not to ride motorcycles but you're probably still riding motorcycles? >> no, no, no, no, i don't ride motorcycles after this any more. >> ellen: because you seemed like you're just taking it like it's a hilarious thing. >> i was doing a photo shoot. usually i'm in a car. i prefer racing cars. but they're like, yeah, you can ride a motorcycle. of course i can. i used to have a motorcycle. kido it. i end up pushing the front brake which made it -- i used to have

[laughter] >> ellen: a good place to crash. >> exactly. >> ellen: let's talk about this is the fifth year in a row you're doing this bike ride. >> dempsey challenge in maine. >> ellen: you're riding how many miles? >> you can choose. you can do 10 miles, 50 miles, 100 miles, it's a run-walk as well to raise money for the dempsey center for cancer, hope and healing which is a wellness center. >> ellen: i love that you do that. >> it's a great event and we'll be riding this weekend. it's our fifth year and we have raised over a million dollars each year and all the proceeds go to the center and all the services are free for anybody coming there. >> ellen: you're doing 50 miles this year? >> 50. i would like to do 100 but i don't have the time. how long will it take to ride 50 miles? >> we kind of cruise along. it will take a couple hours.

>> ellen: a week? >> it's a 48-hour ride. no. it takes a few hours. but we stop along the way and we ride along with people. the real idea behind it was to get people active. >> ellen: i thought you would go faster because you shave your legs and that less resistance -- isn't that true? are they shaved now? >> not yet. i had this debate about shaving my legs. my nickname is hairy legs. most of the cyclists shave their legs. that's what you do so there is a big thing about shaving one's legs. it's a rite of passage. >> ellen: how much time does it shave off -- how hairy must your legs be that you are resisting the wind? >> i think it's more about if you crash and you scab up then it helps the healing process fuhave no hair on the leg. that's the theory i have been told. i don't know whether that's true or not. >> ellen: no, that doesn't make sense at all. >> i think it's an aesthetic

>> ellen: "grey's anatomy." the episode that airs tonight is the 200th episode. isn't that crazy? >> amazing journey. very, very, very lucky. >> ellen: yeah. it is so rare in television to be able to say that. >> yes, it is. it's hard to believe it's been 10 years. >> ellen: when you started, did you think, "oh, this feels like a hit"? or did you worry -- that's a lot of dialogue for a doctor. >> i didn't think anyone would believe me being a neurosurgeon. but now i'm a real doctor, so it worked out, evidently but that was a big concern. will anybody believe us? and will the show get picked up? we didn't know. >> ellen: it did. >> it did, it was doing really well and it's still doing well. >> ellen: when you look back and see pictures of yourself 10 years ago, what do you think when you see that? >> it's hard to look at oneself,

i think. the passage of time isn't kind all the time. >> ellen: especially the 1990's and the 1980's, the hair styles. >> the clothing choices sometimes you don't want to look back at. >> ellen: you have kids on the episode. you have a toddler and you have a baby. >> yes. >> ellen: and how is that working with -- because they say never work with animals or children. >> no, because they do whatever they want and they don't care about the script or the timing or blocking or anything like that. when they're this age it's great because you can control them and hold them and they're wonderful. when they get to be two or three they don't want to do anything. then you have on have twins so there are four sets of everybody running around and some like you better than the other one. you're like which one is this? who is this one? is this my good one? no, this is the other one. it's challenging. >> ellen: i didn't think about that, of course you're going to bond more with one of the kids than the other so they're going to look for that. which one is that? >> they're all great children.

>> ellen: he was your son on the show. >> he was my stepson on the show and he was a terrific, terrific actor and sadly, he died this summer and i think that the writers, ryan murphy and brad folczech and ian brennan have taken this incredible task which is to write a story about a character who passed away and yet honor the actor and really show the audience the love that the cast and the crew but also that the audience had for him, and he was really remarkable. it's an episode, i think it's one of the most beautiful episodes they've ever written on that show and i think they've written a beautiful one. >> ellen: it must have been so hard to film that. everybody must have just been breaking down, right? >> i think that -- in certain -- my section, i think that everyone in the section is dealing with it in their own way, and i don't want to profess

that i was as close to him as some of the younger people on the show because they were an incredibly close unit, i was on the periphery, on the outside of this cast, i loved it but what they went through was such a massive experience of fame and exposure and success. and i really think they handled it quite well. what was interesting about shooting the episode is that you're tasked with doing your job which is the story of telling the story and it's the story that's important to tell because i think that the audience -- he was an important character to them. but yet everyone in the audience and you realize when you're doing this episode is about someone who is gone, and i think that was the very hard thing, is that you wanted to honor him. you wanted to honor his life. yet he was very important to an audience, and i think that -- you know, we both grew up and people are always experiencing the death of artists, musicians

and writers that they care about, and when you connect with somebody in that way, they carry a story for you and then suddenly they're gone, i think it's really emotional for an audience whether you knew him personally or not. >> ellen: no, it is. it's going to be interesting to see how it was dealt with. how it was written. on your new show you play a dad as well. the new show is? >> the new show is "welcome to the family," and what's great about playing burt hummel on "glee" i get to be this great dad who says all the right things. on this new show "welcome to the family" i don't want my kid in the house, i want her gone and out to college, people are like oh, my gosh, i'm in my incorporate nest, i am going to miss my kid, i want to be facebook friends, i say go, you're arizona state's problem now, and i'm excited because i'm excited to have this new part of my life where i get to do all the things like i say to my wife

is like, "once she's gone to college we're going to start working out, you're going to get in shape, you're in great shape, i'm going to get in shape, you're going to go to yoga, come home, tell me about it and i say to my friend this is so great, my daughter is off to college and i have had sex with my wife at a pace of twice in two days." a lot of people married out there. with three kids. but it's been really, really fun because what's fun about doing a comedy is that you're able sometimes to say things on a show that you wouldn't say in real life, and i think that this is a show for anybody who is in a family, that's really who should watch it, called "welcome to the family" because if you have in-laws that you really don't want to spend time with, i get to say the things on this show that you wish you could say. >> ellen: everyone is going to watch that. that's a good pick. it's called "welcome to the family."
