friday, october 11. happy friday. i'm betty nguyen. it is day 11 of the government shutdown and the american public is beyond frustrated. new polling says a majority of voters would fire every member of congress. chuck todd has more on the numbers. >> reporter: in our "wall street journal"al poll 65% believe the government shutdown is doing quite a bit of harm on the economy. politicly republicans are the losers by a 53-31 margin more groups claim republicans than the president. 70% believe they are putting their own political agenda ahead of what is good for the country. the political damage to the gop brand doesn't end there.

53% have a negative view in the survey. and that's giving democrats a boost. they lead the gop by eight points on the question of which party should control congress. >> that was chuck todd reporting. while poll numbers continue to plummet they don't seem to be helping congress and the president broker a deal. the government shutdown is approaching the third week. there was cautious optimism by lawmakers after weeks of icy receptions relations are starting to fall. it looks like the two sides could be reaching an agreement. for 90 minutes last night the meeting was to help america from defaulting on the loans. the meeting didn't produce an immediate deal but did start the ball rolling on the upcoming deadline to raise the nation's

debt ceiling. >> it has gone on too long. we hope the president will choose negotiation over crisis, leadership over inaction. >> what we want to do is offer the president today the ability to move, a temporary increase in the debt ceiling in agreement to go to conference for the budget for his willingness to discuss with us. >> both sides seem open to at least a six week extension to how much money the government can borrow. there is no firm language in place or a timeframe of when a vote in congress would take place. the gop wants to raise the debt limit. democrats say no deal until the government is back open to business. many fear the damage to the republican party could be permanent unless something is done soonerer rather than later. in state houses across the

nation governors are taking action. some want permission to reopen national parks. the obama administration has green lighted the idea but says those four states, colorado, south dakota, utah and wyoming must use their own money. state officials say the closings are costing them hundreds of thousands of dollars a day. this morning the senate famed ohio clock has ticked its last talk. workers in charge of winding the 200-year-old time piece were furloughed. two rabbis are being held without bail in a plot to kidnap and torture two men. the rabbis and eight others were charged with kidnapping in a scheme which they bragged about using cattle prods and plastic bags. the group was allegedly involved

in over 20 kidnappings with wives who couldn't get divorces. the prosecutors said they beat them up, tied them up, shocked them with tasers and stun guns until they got what they want. he said the defendants were motivated by money, not faith. u.s. soldiers in real-life iron man suits may be here sooner than you think. the suit shoots missiles and can fly. the army's suit of armor doesn't fly but it has better ballistic protection. researchers at mit and the u.s. army are creating an ex oskeleton suit. it gives soldiers a 360 degree view of the battlefield and expect to have a prototype ready next year. an entire province stopped

in its tracks because of dense fog. forced people to pull over. surprisingly with the lack of visibility that didn't seem to deter those driving on scooters. here is bill karins. that is really fascinating. you think the folks on the scooters would be more prone to want to stop because if you fall you don't have anything to protect you. >> limited site. i would rather drive in snow i think. it is scary not knowing if the guy ahead of you is stopped. this morning in mississippi and louisiana you have dense fog. two storms on the weather map, the one on the east coast and then the storm that kicked through california is racing through the northern plains. a lot of high wind gusts with that storm. the storm on the east coast still lingering. looks like new york city northward you have dung okay

with this storm. it is cloudy. the philadelphia area back to lancaster, redding, back through central pennsylvania is where the moisture has been converging. new york city is dry but philadelphia southward down to about baltimore is where the rain is concentrated. look at the middle of the country mpt we are still looking at very warm conditions. that is going to be about it. as the cold front goes through we will see strong storms. you will see gusty winds with it and possibly kansas city and nebraska and much of kansas. the southeast looks like they have probably the best friday of anyone, 79 and sunny in atlanta. sounds great for lunch outdoors. here is a look at the weather outside your window. the rain in philadelphia we were targeting one city on the east coast that would see the gloomiest forecast it was

disturbing new information regarding the death of cleveland kidnapper ariel castro. a report says castro may have not committed suicide but rather died from auto erotic asphyxiation which is a sexual act involving people choking themselves. the report states prison guards falsified logs on how many times they checked on him. scott carpenter died at the

age of 88. astronaut scott carpenter was the backup to john glen. carpenter loved exploring down below on the ocean floor. a new report cites a surge in pilot activity off the coast of west africa. pilots are estimated to have stolen $100 million in products. a navy veteran is getting a new support system in the form of two happy pups. guardians of rescue provided her with dogs to help her deal with post traumatic stress disorder. >> guardians of rescue pretty much gave me two best friends today. two companions. i don't have that somebody to be there for me when i am sad to get me through rough times. now i have two of them. >> speaking of rough times, one year after malala yousafzai was shot in the head by taliban gun men she may become the youngest person to win a nobel peace prize. the 16 year old is considered a

favorite for the award with the winner being announced this morning. a lot of people calling her the bravest girl in the world. does the dow's 323 point rise signal the worst is over in washington. we shall see today. today asian stocks rally to highs based on believes the house will get it in order. the latest "wall street journal" poll shows americans are fed up. only 14% say the country is headed in the right direction. that's about half what the number was a month ago. and 78% say the country is on the wrong track. $2 trillion gone. that is what a study by the american society of pension professionals and actuaries says will be lost in retirement money if the u.s. defaults on our debt. after deliberating for five days a california jury found that toyota is not liable in the 2009 death of a woman who was killed when her camry apparently sped up and crashed when she was trying to stop.

google is saving a bundle on u.s. taxes. according to the financial times google funneled money to bermuda which reduced the international tax rate to about 5%. an indiana waitress got stiffed on a $44 check but the customer left a nasty note on on the receipt using the n word. she posted the receipt on facebook and someone from california saw it and started a campaign. called tips for toni. jenkins was just presented with almost $11,000. that is some tips and a nice payback. a hot night for verlander on the mound. richard lui is with us next. which u.s. president changed the celebration of the columbus day national holiday from
