back in custody after days on the run, two men who escaped a florida prison are behind bars. how it happened and the rising questions for the port authority. good evening, i'm linh bui and that's what people are talking about tonight. hours ago the manhunt for two convicted killers came to answered. they were arrested in a panama city hotel room after their families begged them to turn themselves in. we have the latest. >> reporter: police found joseph jenkins and charles walker at hotel in panama city, florida, just 100 miles from the prison they escaped from. authorities say no one was injured during the arrest that came hours after family members

urged the men to turn themselves in. >> we want you to surrender yourself to someone who you trust, who will bring you back in safely. >> reporter: they were serving life sentences for separate murders but both were allowed to leave the prison outside of tallahassee after officials received forged court papers for their release. >> we took them to his grandmother's house. we then took him to his mother's house. >> reporter: amazingly earlier this month both men followed florida law and returned to a florida jail to register as felons. they were fingerprinted and had their mug shots taken and then walked out the door. state officials realized the miss take and there was a massive manhunt. there is now an investigation to

see if other inmates were released on forged documents. >> florida has changed its release system. now the sentencing judge has to verify he ordered the inmates to be released early. we have new video of the mall attack in kenya. it appears to show soldiers removing items from a supermarket during the four-day siege. soldiers are seen leaving with plastic shopping bags or other items in their hands. others look like they're going through items at the counter. an army spokesperson denied soldiers stole anything saying store owners want compensation from insurance firms. the official death toll remains at 61 civilians, 6 soldiers and five attackers. closer to home, the search is on for three masked men accused of robbing and beating an elderly couple in anne arundel county. we spoke with the couple and have their account of what

happened. >> reporter: oliver daff is 87, his girlfriend is 73. they're the victims of a terrifying attack that's the talk of glen burnie and tonight they're telling their story to wjz. >> they started beating me up. as you can see from my face. >> reporter: 87-year-old oliver daff can't believe what happened. he says three intruders broke into the rear of his glen burnie home and brutally beat him and his girlfriend. >> they said, don't open your mouth, shut your mouth, they told me -- they held me down and he hit me again. >> reporter: anne arundel county police are hunting for the assailants. the crime scene is just off dorsey road. the attack has left oliver and his 73-year-old girlfriend shaken. >> and i said please don't hurt him. i kept begging them not to be hurting him, you know. and so, i mean, it was just terrifying. just terrifying. >> reporter: the three suspects

fled in an unknown direction and oliver daff was able to make it across the street to a neighbor who called 911. >> i hope they catch them. i hope -- we don't need people like that around this world. we don't need it. we go to church and everything and live for the lord get the love the god in their hearts and they wouldn't do this. >> reporter: he needed 8 stitches to close the wound in his forehead. the assailants made out with a big screen tv and a shot gun. the incident does not appear to be a random attack and it's believed the victims were targeted, say police. that's the latest, now back to you. >> thank you. and we have learned a member of the community has come forward to donate a new tv to the victim. that will be donated tomorrow morning and anne arundel county police will install it. we now know the name of the man shot to death on orlean

street. it happened just after 6 in the 2,000 block. an unknown suspect fired several shots hitting carter multiple times. he was 22 years old. several people are in the hospital after a crash in howard county. it happened this morning along route 175 eastbound at route 108. police say the crash involved five cars. seven people were taken to the hospital, two with life threatening injuries. no word on what caused the change reaction crash. -- chain reaction crash. a big loss for baltimore. a popular restaurant owner well known in the community passed away. blueberry pancakes, chicken and waffles, delicious staples at miss shirley's, a successful restaurant chain. he died at sinai hospital after a battle with leukemia. he was 61 years old. the mayor released a statement

saying my heart aches at hearing the news of eddie dopkin's passing. miss shirley's cafe is a baltimore landmark. two years ago wjz talked to dopkin about competing, to be on the food network. >> this is one more cue to put our name across the country. >> his name was well known around baltimore. roleland park bagel company was another company he owned. his legacy lives on through the food he loved to make. >> funeral services are set for monday afternoon in pikesville. a second vendor files a lawsuit against highland town grocery santony's. one week after they announced they're closing.

a food and vegetable vendor say they deliver produce to san tony's and all of it remains unpaid. san tony's were also sued by another company for unpaid bills. san tony's has not commented on the suit. a day of remembrance, the fire department honors firefighters who died in action. gigi barnett's reports this ceremony recognizes firefighters who showed extreme bravery in the face of danger. >> reporter: a single flag hoisted high hanging in memory of city firefighters lost over the last year. >> the lord give and the lord taketh away. >> reporter: this ceremony marked the occasion. >> he lived and breathed talking about the fire didn't. >> reporter: ellestine grant's husband silas died last year. before retiring, he was a trail blazer in the department engine

13. >> he was one of the first classes of african american in baltimore in 1956 when he came on and when i was a young kid i would watch him at the station and things of that nature and it made an impact upon me. >> reporter: 52 firefighters were honored this weekend at the memorial service. nine died while on duty in the last year. the city has not lost any firefighters while battling blazes. that is a badge of honor here. >> when we have a firefighter killed, we look at it and say why. everybody must get home safe. >> reporter: for the first time ever, members of the anne arundel fire department were honored as well for help they gave during a fierce fire earlier this year. i'm gigi barnett, wjz eyewitness news. >> shortly after the memorial service there was a medals day to recognize the top firefighters in the department. celebrations today at one of

baltimore's historic sites. [ band playing ]. . >> the historic clifton mansion is the home of the nonprofit civic work. they celebrated its 20th birthday with music and reenactors. visitors got a rare tour of the property which was built in the 1800s. the original owner was a captain in the war of 1812. coming up on wjz's eyewitness news, an accident hits too close to home in buenos airs. two teens arrested for the death of a classmate. and now one mother is behind bars. what a couple spent the day doing in preparation for the days ahead. . sunshine returns then a big cooldown in the mix.

upholds the state judge's ruling on same-sex marriage. the court's decision means same-sex couples can legally tie the knot as soon as monday. cities and towns across the state added extra office hours today to accept those marriage licenses. one woman is relieved that she can finally say "till death do us part." >> i think everybody deserves to have the equal rights just as, you know, normal husband and wife. i live the same life-style as a man and a woman, and that's good for me. >> gay rights groups have been helping couples file marriage licenses. a desperate search in new york for a missing teen with autism. police say the 14-year-old was last seen october 4th. a surveillance camera caught him walking out of his long island city school. more than 100 police officers are on the case and volunteers are searching around the clock. the reward for finding that teen

is now more than $77,000. we are tracking some new developments tonight in the case of a 12-year-old florida girl who took her own life after being bullied on line. prosecutors charged two girls this week for cyber bullying. but now the step mother of one of the accused girls is also under arrest. adrianana diaz reports for wjz. >> reporter: a florida judge read the charges against vivian fazberg including child abuse after this recently discovered video. authorities say fazberg viciously beat two young boys when she caught them fighting in her home. other children can be heard laughing and swearing in the background. after the ordeal, one boy remained motionless on the ground. >> and after we showed her the video about how she at least hit this one kid 10 times in the back and in the head with her

fist, she admitted, well, i did go too far that day. >> reporter: miss found the video on line while investigating the suicide of rebecca sedwick. last month she jumped off a tower at this cement factory after being cyber bullied for a year. two students were charged in the case and one was the stepdaughter from fazberg. >> the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. >> reporter: fazberg doesn't allow her children to bully, she said and monitors their social media but police found this video on one of her kids' facebook page. . >> the video is hard to watch much the sheriff says the children beaten in the video are okay. they're under the supervision of florida's department of children and families. switching gears now, mothers and daughters join together for a great event. it's the annual blink pink event in baltimore. it's a special day of pampering

for women diagnosed with breast cancer and their daughters. the pink door spa provided manicures, pedicures, yoga sessions and other fun activities. it's also a day of fundraising while also raising breast cancer awareness. so great moms and daughters getting spoiled together. good event. >> it is breast cancer awareness month. so a lot of events this month. >> that's right: this day not ideal. we had a decent amount of sunshine in the harbor in the afternoon. good news, clouds will be decreasing as we head into the overnight hours. current temperatures across the region, we're seeing a lot of 50s from baltimore north, and then 60s in southern maryland and over on the lower herein shore. 36 degrees in oakland. that's freezing almost. and locally we're seeing temperatures anywhere from the mid-50s to right around the

lower 60s. 61 in rockhall. 58 in annapolis. winds have shifted quite a bit now coming out of the west. that's thanks to a cold front moving through the area and it will continue to push through as we head into the overnight hours and they've brought the winds up to speed a little bit at herringerstown around 22 -- hagerstown around 22 miles an hour. we had a squall come through, not a lot of rainfall, but some sprinkles out there in height to moderate rainfall. didn't last long. behind that, very dry air that's are working its way in. cold front spanning from the gulf of mexico all the way out toward north eastern canada. behind it, look at this clear, dry air. that's the air mass as we head into sunday. that means we'll see a lot of sunshine in the forecast for us. here is the big picture for your sunday. that area of low pressure will

depart up into the canadian maritimes. high pressure will dominate the forecast for sunday and monday. through monday, high pressure stays in control. then keeping a close eye on a cold front approaching from manitoba, saskatchewan, canada. that will bring us chilly, chilly air and unseasonably cool air. it won't get here until about wednesday and thursday morning. you will certainly notice the difference. a little bit of rainfall is associated with it tuesday night into wednesday but a lot of disagreement with the models as far as that goes so we'll have to fine tune the forecast over the next couple of days. bay temperature 66 degrees. small craft advisory in effect through sunday morning. here is what you can expect for tonight. low temperatures around 45 degrees, that's average for this time of year. decreasing cloud cover, 64 tomorrow, mostly sunny. going to and very seasonable day, enjoy it because things will change. 68 on monday, 67 tuesday, 58 on
