troubled rollout of the government's health care insurance website. website developers tell the "associated press" they saw red flags for months and complained to each other about unrealistic deadlines. well, now congress is looking into the issue. a cbs news poll found that 51% of americans disapprove of the health care law and only 12% of americans think the signup for health insurance changes is going well. tara mergener is in washington. tara, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. as major problems persist with this website, the white house has hired a former budget official and trusted adviser to lead the project. on capitol hill the administration faces tough questions about what happened. high-ranking health and human services officials will brief congress this morning on the problems with healthcare.gov. the website was supposed to make it easy to shop for health insurance, but it has been slow and unresponsive. >> we need to get to the bottom

of it. >> congressman mike rogers says he and his colleagues have tough questions for obama administration officials when they begin hearing of the troubled website tomorrow. >> what happened? why did you spend almost billion dollars on a system that does not work? >> president obama is bringing in long-time economic adviser jeffrey zients to manage the restructuring of the website. >> he's an expert in the field of effective management and hhs will be tapping his experience and expertise as they address the challenges that have come up with the administration of the website. >> hhs secretary kathleen sebelius tells cnn there's still time to get things fixed. >> i am confident that millions of americans at the end of the enrollment period, march 31st, will have coverage for the first time in their lives.

>> tuesday they introduced janice baker the first to successfully enroll through the website but she tells cbs news it took seven hours over several days. >> the good news is she'll now have coverage on day one. >> baker said she was turned down for coverage in the past because of a pre-existing condition, something that is now illegal under the affordable care act. and for those unable to sign unby the march deadline, the white house says there is flexibflext flexth. an many re? >> tara mergener in washington. thank you, tara. well, congress has raised the debt ceiling through february 7th, but the threat of the default haunts markets worldwide. cbs anchor charlie rose asked legendary and influential investor warren buffett for his thoughts on the potential default. >> i did not think the 135 million people were willing to do that to the other 335 million people in the country. we built up a reputation in the united states to become the reserve currency and people all over the world that would trust

be heard on emergency calls made during monday's shooting. >> 911 emergency. >> a student from sparks middle school -- can you please send police out here. there's a kid with a gun. >> reporter: officers were on the scene in three minutes. >> we're inside the cafeteria where the students have been huddled. so they're safe here. we're looking for the shooter now. >> reporter: about 700 students were beginning their school day when a 12-year-old classmate opened fire. teachers scrambled to get kids inside. >> and we have some kids outside that had a gun pointed at them, so we're locked down in the building. >> okay. so you're locked down? >> reporter: police say as many as 30 children witnessed the violence. >> i've got a kid down that's been shot. teacher down. >> teacher down. >> reporter: the boy shot and injured two fellow students and killed a popular eighth grade math teacher michael landsberry

and then fatally shot himself in the head. >> we've got a guy down with a gunshot to the head. >> reporter: he made a chilling remark. >> he pointed it at us and said you ruined my life and i'm going the ruin yours. >> reporter: police say the boy got the gun from his home. teresa garcia, cbs news. in the words of one australian fire official, today could be absolutely devastating. 71 fires are burning in new south wales, australia's most populated state. a state of emergency has been declared, and thousands have been urged to evacuate and more than 200 homes have already been destroyed. melinda nucifora of australia reports. >> reporter: just as it seems the worst had been avoided, the conditions feared this afternoon arrived. the ignition of a fresh fire front. this blaze jumped a road at redhead, threatening properties south of new castle. >> it's a very fluid situation, it's a very dynamic situation.

>> reporter: another fire front in nearby mid by. water fighters moved in and public schools were immediately evacuated. the m-1, the main freeway closed in both directions. >> the strong winds are proving to be very difficult for firefighters, for aircraft. >> reporter: in the anticipated hot spots of blue mountains, parts turned red. we captured this fox fire taking hold before a water bomber also moved in. hundreds of residents in the danger zone are taking no chances, moving families and whatever they can fit in their cars. >> i'm pretty scared of fire in general, so there's no choice for me. we're going. >> reporter: the lynch family breeds cats. 15 have already been loaded. they're not taking a chance either. >> we've got our animals in the back of the trailer and we're taking photos. >> reporter: others are choosing

alphonso van marsh is in london. alfonso, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. today's christening will be the first time in 400 years that four generations of royals will be photographed together. the duke and duchess of cambridge will have baby george christened today, three months after they brought him home from a london hospital. britain's future king will be baptized inside for a private ceremony inside of st. james. >> i will mark prince george with the sign of the cross on his forehead. >> reporter: prince william and kate have kept the guest list so small some of the most senior members of the royal family were not invited. and while many monarchs including prince william were baptized at buckingham palace, william and kate broke tradition. kate was confirmed here.

here's a look at today's here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. new york, cloudy today, 53 the high. miami, a chance of thunderstorms, cloudy in chicago, but sunshine in dallas today with a high of 78. and los angeles, sunshine as well. time now for a check of the national forecast. it is the coolest weather of the season from the midwest to the east coast. there are frost and freeze warnings from the great lakes to the northeast and there will be occasional showers in much of the northeast. but the south will be mostly dry today except for some showers in southern florida. it will be warm and dry in the west with temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above normal. on the "cbs moneywatch" now, the pace of job growth slows and the latest entries in the tablet war. gigi stone is at the new york stock exchange with that and

more. good morning, gigi. >> good morning, anne-marie. asian markets were mostly lower after the dollar weakened against the yen. tokyo's nikkei lost nearly 2%. hong kong's hang seng fell more than 1%. the prospect of more economic stimulus from the fed pushed u.s. stocks higher. the dow climbed 75 points. the nasdaq added 9.5 points. the september jobs report came in lower than expected, indicating a slowing economy. last month employers added just 148,000 jobs, a steep drop from the 193,000 in august. and the white house says october is likely to be worse, but the unemployment rate did drop to 7.2%. more fallout from the government shutdown. the irs says it's delaying the start of next year's filing season by up to two weeks. the delay will mainly affect early filers. the irs says it needs more time to update the computer programs used to process returns, but the april 15th deadline for filing

tax returns will not change. some good news for drivers. gas prices are near a nine-month low. aaa says the average price of an unleaded gallon is $3.34. that's 32 cents lower than a year ago. analyst expect the lower prices to prevail well into next year. and the tablet wars are heating up. apple introduced its new ipad lineup yesterday but microsoft and norfolk owe also introduced their new and updated products. it's thinner, faster running, and weighs just one pound. manufacturers are expected to ship 184 million tablet this year, 53% more than last year. and by 2015 for the first time, it is expected there will be more tablets sold than pcs. they certainly are lighter, anne-marie. >> i think it's time for me to get an upgrade. i have the first ipad and now it seems like such a relic with all this new stuff. >> me too. it's definitely more than one point. >> yeah. gigi stone at the new york stock exchange.

thank you so much, gigi. well, four football fans who fought outsiede sunday's jets "patri /patriots game have been charged with assault and disorderly conduct. they were all banned from all events at metlife stadium. video shows the new england fans fighting with pesky who then punches one of the women in the face. pesky's attorney says the evidence will vindicate his client. the jets fan spent nearly three years in prison for stabbing a man to death in 1992. now, a texas high school football coach is being investigated for bullying after his team ran up a lopsided score over another school on friday. alito defeated western hills, 91-0. well, after the game a western hills parent submitted a formal complaint that the bloiout amounted to bullying, however, alee to coach when buchanan benched his stars after 21 plays
