murder mystery. the body of a popular teacher, found near her school. >> now, a 14-year-old student is charged in her death, but there are still questions. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. >> i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> a student at a high school in northeastern massachusetts is being held without bail in connection with the death of one of the school's math teachers. now, investigators are trying to figure out why she was murdered. vinita nair has the latest for wjz. >> reporter: 14-year-old phillip chisholm stood before a judge wednesday. he was arraigned in connection with the death of a popular math teacher. the boy didn't return home from danvers high school. >> we didn't know if he was kidnapped or something. so we went around looking for him. because we cared about him. he was on the team. we liked him. >> reporter: another call came tuesday night, about a female

teacher who was also missing. >> danvers police initiated a search for the teacher and discovered blood at the second floor bathroom near the high school. >> police found the body of colleen ritzer in the woods behind the school. her relatives say she had a passion for teaching -- teaching and that she lived at home with her close-knit family. she had taught at the high school for two years. >> she was one of the nicest teachers at danvers. always went out of her way to say hi to you. always nice. it's a real tragedy. >> reporter: earlier other police found the 14-year-old boy walking on a nearby road. police would not say how they tied the boy to ritzer's death, or how she was killed. students who know the boy describe the suspect as pleasant and outgoing. he scored high. >> i met him at lunch a few weeks ago and he seemed like a normal kid, not a troubled

quid. >> reporter: students plan to hold a vigil tonight. >> chisholm is being held without bail. he is due back in court november 22nd. one of the boston marathon bombing suspects is accused of another horrific crime. denise has details on this. >> reporter: tamar lan sarnaceph was killed in a gun battle several days after the bombings. prosecutors now say a witness named him as a participant in a triple murder two years ago in massachusetts. in that case, three men were found with their necks cut and bodies covered in marijuana. one of the victims was a boxer and friend of tsarnaev. the witness who implicated tsarnaev was shot to death by the fbi, while being questioned in connection with the maryland bombings. >> tsarnaev's brother dzokhar is fighting to get access to records he says will help his defense. online retailer amazon is providing a big boost to the

country's economy. the company is building a new facility in baltimore, and that means 1,000 more jobs. >> reporter: good afternoon. amazon has announced it wants to start doing same-day deliveries. and to do that, it has to locate its products closer to its customers. so is this warehouse is going to serve the entire baltimore and washington area. >> reporter: online giant amazon will soon be one of baltimore's biggest employers. the fortune 500 company just announced it has picked charm city as a location for one of its new distribution centers. it's been in the works for a long time. the deal, music to a mayor's ears as much as now that it's reality, and it's 1,000 jobs, 1,000 good-paying jobs with benefits, it's a great day for baltimore. and i'm very please -- pleased at the work that was done to make that happen. >> of course, we always talk about jobs, jobs, jobs. it's a great thing for the city, great for south baltimore. >> reporter: -- the a 1 million- square-foot facility going up in a spot formerly taken up by

the gm assembly plant. those who work here will pick, pack and ship retail goods to consumers. this is one of eight new ware houses they plan nationwide. amazon is building the centers in cities it believes has a large consumer base, making it easy why -- easier to get products to people faster. city leaders believe it is the beginning of more business. >> it shows that we are once again a world class city and open for business. >> reporter: now, there's no timetable on when hiring will continue. amazon is eligible for about a dozen tax credits and incentives. i'm mike schuh reporting. back to you on tv hill. >> mike, thank you. maryland residents who purchase items on amazon.com,ville to pay sales tax, when the distribution center opens next year. one of baltimore's oldest supermarkets closes its doors for good. santony's in highland town, opened in baltimore in the 1930s. the owner said the city's

bottle tax opened for business. the mayor disputes the claim that the tax is the sole reason for closing. several national and retail chains have reportedly expressed interest in taking over the site. >> johns hopkins university wins a $70 million federal grant to help shape the future of medicine. the money will go to researchers trying to put their work to practical use. the grant was awarded through the nih. the university of maryland baltimore lost its bid for a similar grant. we're seeing significantly cooler temperatures in maryland today. and a freeze watch will go into effect later in the week. parts of western maryland even got a little snowfall. take a look. this is what it looked like on route 50 and garrett county, the western most part of the state. and a look outside in baltimore. it's not quite that cold in central maryland. wjz has weather and traffic together. bob turk is updating our first warning forecast. >> that was the picture you saw in garrett county, was 3,000 feet up. that's almost the highest point

in maryland. which is 3300 feet up. it's one of the highest places out there. and they did have temperatures in the low 30s that's exactly where it is now. up in oakland, now, it's 32 degrees. we're at 56 here. 56 in d.c., and pax river. 46 in cumberland. and 49 in hagerstown. and the duplicate is very dry, once again. 32. we've had a couple of sprinkles, north and west of us. and we've had rain this morning, east of us. but we've missed all the rain here. tomorrow, another chilly day. more like november than mid- october. and by tomorrow night, there's a good chance areas north of the city, as you can see, from baltimore county, harford county, up through western maryland, they have a freeze watch and frost advisory for all of those areas. temperatures probably getting down to around 31 or 32. so if you've got tender plants outside, tomatoes, whatnot, bring them in. take off the tomatoes. they'll ripen inside. any tender plants that are annuals, it will probably get killed by tomorrow night. so cover them up or bring them

science center. you can get your tickets at maryland science center.org. back to you. >> okay, kristy. thank you. a growing black bear population means more bears are being hunted this morning. wjz went to the western part of maryland, where that you want was centered. >> like the bears, the hunt is spreading. >> reporter: as deep creek lake opens, the check-in station, carrying dead, black bears. there is no restriction on size or age, during the annual hunt. but there is a promise. >> what we promised all along is that we would never wipe out the bear population with this well-regulated hunt. >> today, it's estimated at 1,000. so the harvest quota sup. >> 30 bears were taken the first year of the hunt in 2004. this year, between 95 and 130 will be taken. as their ranges spread from garrett and allegheny counties, east into washington and frederick counties. >> we're averaging about three

cubs per cell. >> the goal is to slow that growth. >> the hunt is achieving that, slowing the growth, but the bear population continues to grow. >> reporter: but groups opposed to the hunt see that argument as unnecessary. >> we have heard these arguments again and again. but we have to look at the land mass out there in western maryland. it's a luger land mass for these bears. >> reporter: only bears, seeking more room, are now being spotted in backyards. and farms have become hunting grounds. >> he made a hard right. and i was about 80 yards away and took a shot. >> the bear this this gentleman took was a prior nuisance bear that we captured. this is a hunt that directly targets some of the problem bears. >> reporter: alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> hunters aren't the only ones taking black bears. according to dnr, 50 bears have been hit and killed by cars. that's about half the number being hunted. if you look at the sky this week, you might catch a glimpse

it is partly sunny. 56 degrees in central maryland right now. the complete first warning weather forecast is coming up. some dramatic video shows the efforts to rescue dozens of immigrants floating in the mediterranean sea. about 250 were on board the boat when it capsized, 60 miles from an island near italy. the video is from a military aircraft, brought in to rescue those survivors. dozens of people drowned, though, even before help arrived. the italian media is reporting that the boat was stranded and capsized with panicked passengers, waved for help. a california cab driver deliberately crashes into a parked car to save his life,

after a passenger suddenly attacks. the video shows the woman pulling a knife and swinging a hammer at the driver's head. he said she became violent when it was time to pay the $6 fare. the driver said he felt lucky, that he only needed 13 stitches in the hand. police are only looking for the attacker. authorities in new york say they may soon scale back the search for a missing autistic child, who walked out of his school three weeks ago and dispark peered. families with autistic children say it's too common for them to wander away without warning. vinita nair reports for wjz, parents have to be on guard at all times am. >> he has never said, mommy. >> johanna berg's 10-year-old son aidan was diagnosed with severe autism when he was 2 years old. >> he has no fear of running into the street, no concept cars coming at him. >> this surveillance video

[ stock bells ringing ] >> all the markets end down today. dow was down 50 points, s&p down 8, and nasdaq off 22 points. let's go to new york now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> reporter: the stock market snapped its recent winning streak, following a batch of mixed earnings reports. heavy equipment maker, caterpillar, said profits plunged 44% last quarter. but boeing said strong demand for commercial airplanes helped that company report better than expected earnings. wal-mart has kicked off an ipad trade-in program. shoppers can get up to $300 for their current tablet, depending on the model. the credit can then be used toward the purchase of a new ipad. wal-mart also cut the price of the ipad air by $20 and will start selling the new tablet,

temperatures below normal. there are just a few sprinkles west of the city. we could see a sprinkle or two an hour. that's about it. most of the rain was well east of our region. delaware, the eastern shore, picked up a tenth, quarter of an inch somewhere. we didn't see a drop of rain. but next hour, it may be a little sprinkle activity. temperatures, 56 now. dew points very low. very dry air. 32. humidity only 40%. kind of tough to get even rain showers, to reach the ground when it's this dry aloft. the barometer has dropped but it's going to stay steady for a while. 29.96 inches. currently, freezing in oakland. and yes, there was snow in garrett county. mainly about 2500 feet, where they saw about a half inch to an inch. 50, ocean city. and in the mid- to upper 50s around central maryland. elkton, for some reason, jumped top 60? and 57 down by the bay. westminster at 52. we've got a west/northwest wind

that brought the chilly air in. finally, the winds pick up. if you're heading out this evening, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s, it's going to feel about 5 or 7 degrees cooler than the actual temperature. because of debris. so dress for a chilly evening tonight. now, as far as the rain is concerned, the bulk of it well offshore as you can see. a little snow fell this afternoon and this morning over eastern portions of indiana. western ohio, temperatures about 35, 36. a little more down in the portions of the dacoatas. portions of illinois, actually got about an inch, inch and a half for of new snow for them. the rain, out to the west. this is basically lake-effect snow. warm water. cold air coming across great lakes. and a lot of instability in the atmosphere. you can see it primarily in the mountain areas to the west. and that will continue at least for a little while longer. one or two more of these sprinkles may make it across the mountains. cool weather here but dry the

dubbed bishop bling to leave his diocese in germany. this comes as the vatican investigates the $42 million price tag for the bishom's new -- bishop's new residence complex. >> this woman says, i cannot possibly imagine where the money went. i presume he has a golden water tap. >> reporter: bishop tevon vanles apologizes for any judgment, but claims the astronomical bill was for 10 different projects. the scandal comes as pope francis made an example of living humbly, choosing to live in a guest house, rather than a luxurious papal apartment. many have called for resignation. but pope francis is only making the bishop leave for an unspecified period of time, pending the outcome of the investigation. tina kraus, wjz eyewitness news.

>> lindbergh's vicker general will run the diocese during the bishop's absence. it's judgment day for an ohio man who went on you tube and confessed to a deadly drunk driving accident. >> matthew cordell was sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison for the wrong-way fatal crash. >> on june 22, 2013, i hit and killed vincent canzani. >> he is 22. posted a video on the internet, admitting to what he had done. along with prison term, he will lose his driver's license for life. he killed vincent canzani in june, after a night of drinking at bars, near downtown columbus. he must also pay court costs and $1,000 fine. >> his confession was viewed online, more than 2.3 million times. it is a -- rite of the season for playing in leaves. but for a little girl in oregon, it led to death.

she and her stepstory were playing in the leaves. the leaves extended over the curb by their house. they were run over by a car, and the driver may not have even known he hit them. anna died at the scene. her sister is in critical condition. four people are charged in a fight at metlife stadium. the video of a fan punching a woman gained national attention. that man is now charged with assault and disorderly conduct. the woman he hit and two others were also charged. it's unclear what sparked the violence. the new york jets say the team has a zero tolerance for this behavior and is banning everyone involved from attending any events at the stadium. the scramble continues to fix the problems with the government website americans are trying to use to sign up for health insurance. technology experts are now lending a hand. as tara mergener reports for wjz, congress is demanding answers. >> reporter: obama administration officials briefed congressional democrats this morning on what is being done to improve the health insurance website. >> i don't believe that the

president is going to allow days and weeks to go by without marked improvement in the website's capabilities. >> disappointing. >> reporter: republicans were not invited to the session. >> clearly, there's problems with the website. but i would argue that the problems go much further than that. >> reporter: healthcare.gov is set up to allow americans to shop for health insurance. but it is plagued with problems. house republicans have included video with actual excerpt. >> clicking save and continue does not allow me to move forward. >> don't lose your sanity over this website. try it. if it doesn't work, walk away. try it tomorrow. >> reporter: some gop lawmakers, including congressman paul ryan are calling for health and human services jettary kathleen sebelius to resign. but in an interview, she put the focus on the website.

of older adults who did not have diabetes. german researchers found those with high blood sugar levels have lower scores on memory tests. >> people that had the elevated blood sugars had worse memory, worse retention of words that they gave them over a 30-minute period. >> reporter: people in the study with higher blood sugar levels also had less volume in the area of the brain that is important for memory. >> reporter: some studies show type 2 diabetes include the risk of dementia, including alzheimer's disease. researchers suggest the finding could be a way to prevent memory problems, each in people with normal levels. dr. jana says a healthy lifestyle is key for keeping blood sugar down. >> exercise is absolutely fundamental. in conjunction with that, to eat a good diet. >> reporter: nicole carrington's blood sugar levels are normal. but with a family history of diabetes, she's taking her

in utah, a man takes an unusual trip to the state capital, by driving right up to the front door. surveillance video captured the bizarre scene, as the truck climbed three flights of steps. the suspect made it to a secure area on the third floor, where state trooper the caught up to him. of course he was on foot by then. then he started kicking the doors. when a taser didn't take him down, the suspect troopers had to tackle him. the man's motive is still under investigation. >> well, the crisis is but the fight is not over for

firefighters, battling dozens of wildfires in australia. mary is in the newsroom with more on this. >> reporter: new fires are breaking out. and the wind is picking up. at least 60 fires are still burning across new south wales with more than 2,000 firefighters, struggling to contain them. more than 200 homes are now ashes. and one man died of a heart attack, while he was trying to save his house. the heat has eased up. but the fire commissioner says the situation could get worse once again. the flames had scorched more than 300,000 acres so far. back to you. >> thank you, mary. a state of emergency has been declared in new south wales, giving the government increased resources to handle the disaster. hundreds in maryville, missouri, are demanding justice for daisy coleman, the girl who said she was raped by a high school senior at age 14. a special prosecutor is take a special look at the case. >> reporter: the national media, descending on maryville.

colemans say that is a lie. they believe the real reason charges were dropped, one of the accused, matt barnett, his grandfather, is a former state representative. >> special prosecutor announced, what's your reaction to that? >> i think it's great. i think this actually may be the one thing that finally gets the truth out. >> reporter: after it does, this missouri town of 12,000 will begin the tough job of asking itself the tough questions. >> after this process is come to a conclusion, need to back down, [ inaudible ] to increase awareness in the community. >> neither coleman nor her mother attended that rally. a washington state couple are in critical condition today, after the van they were in exploded. the thurston county sheriff's office in yelm, washington, said the man altered the van's fuel system and a 55-gallon drum of gas exploded. when firefighters arrived, they found the vehicles fully engulfed in flames.

it's unclear how much gas was in that drum. the fda is appealing to dog and cat owners for information as it struggles to solve the outbreak of a mysterious illness. thousands of pets have gotten sick. hundreds have died. the only common denominator is a jerky treat the animals ate. the fda has received nearly 4,000 reports of illness in cats and dogs, dating back to 2007. it's estimated that 580 of those pets died. >> these animals are presenting kind of -- vague sympt symptoms of vomiting, diarrhea. they are lethargic. >> reporter: dr. geezer is at the school of veterinary medicine. he's been studying this illness, known as fanconei, at his lab. >> turkish treats have been associated with this fanconi syndrome. we're not sure if everything comes from there.

but arm all -- certainly all of the indications are that it is from there. >> reporter: they have been unable to pinpoint the problems. for pet owners like robin pierre, waiting for answers has been a source for frustration. >> you can't have so many healthy pups die. and the one common denomerator is the chicken and jerky imported from china. >> reporter: in 2002, her 2- year-old pug bella ate wagon turkey dog tenders, a product made in china and distributed by purina. purina voluntarily pulled the products in january, insisting their action was not linked to the fda investigation and that the treats don't pose a health or safety risk. in tuesday's warning, the fda said our beloved four-legged companions deserve our best effort. they also asked that they provide samples from affected animals. and continue to report on jerky- related illnesses. they also ask that vets inform

owners of jerky risks. >> if you have any of these treats, you should throw them away. we have breaking news out of howard county, where police are on the scene of an officer- involved shooting. we'll go live to captain jeff long; more from sky eye chopper 13. we're being told that a howard county police officer was shot after responding to the 9500 block of washington boulevard in laurel. right now, the suspect is still on the large -- or still at large. and you can see that there is a pretty big presence of police officers from howard county, from laurel state police, and a police helicopter flying overhead, while they deal with this situation. and currently, washington boulevard, through laurel, completely shut down, for this tactical situation. the police officer that was shot was transported via the maryland state police helicopter to shock trauma. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13. captain jeff long. back to you. >> thank you, jeff. and we'll bring you any more
